[Bes-admins] locating a misplaced device

2012-04-18 Thread Art Alexion
this is a basic question, but not something I've had to do since moving to BES
5. I have the location service configured for the device, but can't figure out
how to view the data. Google and RIM only seem to want to tell me about how to
configure, but not how to use.

Re: [Bes-admins] Mobile Fusion

2012-04-04 Thread Art Alexion
It seems they all do. The problem is that every carrier and every
manufacturer customizes Android so much that it is near impossible to
address all of the idiosyncrasies. So they all seem to have standardized
on Touchdown. Of course, most allow you to skip Touchdown and just
configure the exchange account separate from the MDM account. We use
MaaS360 from Fiberlink. Not doing Touchdown though it would make
activations easier. Managing Android is a PITA. I've been doing it for
about a year, and am liking it less and less each day.

While I am not a huge fan of Apple as a company, their iOS products are
standard, stable and easily managed. No agent to install on the device
for management; it is all based on certificate based encryption.

+1 for Microsoft Licensing being confusing. Even most of their employees
don't understand it.

We have a hosted MDM solution now. I was intrigued by Mobile Fusion
until I did the numbers. With Mobile Fusion, cost includes BES + CALs +
Server associated costs, hardware, configuration and maintenance +
Support contract which is priced somewhat on the number of devices being
managed. Some of these costs are long term, like BES, one time, like
CALs, and others continuing, like the support contract.

With the hosted MDM, we pay per device. per month. No up front BES, no
CALs, no server hardware, no maintenance, and support is included.
Mobile Fusion may work for you, but when you factor in all of the costs,
maybe not.

Re: [Bes-admins] Blackberry Mobile Fusion

2012-03-29 Thread Art Alexion
I compared the pricing for SaaS based MDM and Fusion. It seems that a lot
depends on the number of users and how your BES support provider is charging
you. Fusion server is free and you pay for the CALs. However, you also pay
for a support contract from RIM or another provider. For the SaaS solution we
only pay a monthly, per-user fee. Support is included and the vendor owns and
maintains the server. If your support provider charges by the number of
users/devices, you have to compare that with what you are paying for SaaS MDM
in addition to the cost of the CALs.

The answer given today is no. Fusion consists of three products as I
understand it. BES/BAS, Blackberry Device Manager (Playbook and BB OS
10), and Universal Device Server (Android iOS) fused together with a
single management interface resembling BAS. Forgive me if I make minor
mistakes in the names, but that's basically what they are called. Each
has different, non-transferrable CALs. That is, they can be recycled as
currently, but not moved from one type to another.

Re: [Bes-admins] Playbook 2.0

2012-03-02 Thread Art Alexion
We had a big rollout of AD/Exchange accounts over the past 3 or 4 months.
With that a lot of phone activations with personally owned and branch
owned devices. Our BBs went from about 60 to about 75 or 80. Our
Android, iPhone and corresponding tablets went from 0 to about 220. In
fact, we had branch users who were using BESX and switched to Android just
to avoid paying the BES data plan. The CALs were coming out of our budget.

We are using hosted MDM, and paying per device per month. Buying CALs for
Fusion is looking like a very attractive alternative right now.

attention as of late to it, but it sounds like it's far enough along I
should start looking at it again.

That is, they can be recycled as
currently, but not moved from one type to another.

favorably with other MDM solutions. Server is free. Only pay for the
CALs, which work and are priced comparably with BES CALs.

The official Google Nexus/Motorola Xoom firmware/software does not use nor come
pre-installed with the software.

I could link to many more news postings or forums posting where this was
discussed in detail today. I believe VZW has stated that they do not use CIQ
either.

This software for all intents and purposes is only put on devices where the
carrier has modified the software or requested the manufacturer to modify it
for them.

This isn't to say that CarrierIQ didn't make an application for BlackBerry.

A quick and dirty look at it:
http://forums.crackberry.com/general-discussion-f2/carrier-iq-spyware-blackberrys-too-674331/index3.html#post6898345

So even if it is installed on a BlackBerry, it's really easy to see by going
into your Application Management on the device and looking for anything named
IQAgent or taking a look at the installed modules on a BES. But this seems
VERY carrier specific at the moment and was blown way out of proportion
especially considering this has been news for several weeks now in the
Android world.

Trevor Eckhart had said that it affects BlackBerry but never backed it up and
every single news site, blog, and media ran with it, self-referencing each
other to oblivion without actually doing any fact checking. I still haven't
heard of anyone actually finding this software installed on their device,
although I admit I haven't been keeping up with the news in the past few hours
as I did actually have to get work done in the afternoon once I realized this
doesn't affect me or our corporate BES Carrier.

It's also debated the application even transmits information unless the device
is put into debugging mode on either Android or iOS. Not to say that it
couldn't or hasn't.

The quote on both sites (Gizmodo just quotes the Computerworld site) is
limited to

T-Mobile does not use this diagnostic tool to obtain the content of
text, email or voice messages, or the specific destinations of a
customers' internet activity, nor is the tool used for marketing
purposes.

I looked at three T-Mobile devices, HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S 4G,
and HTC Flyer. All rooted. I did not find the files indicated to be
associated with the software that I found on the Sprint and ATT phones.
I also ran the Logging TrackerApp on the T-Mobile phones and it didn't
find CiQ either. That's the best evidence I can offer.

[Bes-admins] BES email limitation?

2011-09-01 Thread Art Alexion
Is there a limitation on email addresses imposed by BES 5.0.3?

We have a user with the address, firstname.last-n...@company.org Yes, that is
a hyphenated last name. BES can't find the account whether searching Display
name (full or just first), nor email address. Coming up fine in Exchange 2007.
Does BES choke on addresses like this? If so, and I create an exchange smtp
alias to overcome the limitation, will it work if it is not the primary smtp?

Thanks.

Subject: [Bes-admins] BES email limitation?

Is there a limitation on email addresses imposed by BES 5.0.3?

We have a user with the address,
firstname.last-n...@company.orgmailto:firstname.last-n...@company.org Yes,
that is a hyphenated last name. BES can't find the account whether searching
Display name (full or just first), nor email address. Coming up fine in
Exchange 2007. Does BES choke on addresses like this? If so, and I create an
exchange smtp alias to overcome the limitation, will it work if it is not the
primary smtp?

Thanks.

[Bes-admins] Blocking BIS access to our Exchange

2011-06-21 Thread Art Alexion
I have Googled this with minimal luck.

We have some users who are accessing their corporate mail via BIS. Though we
freely provide BES accounts, I suspect these are users with personal devices
who don't want to pay for an Enterprise Data Plan. Pretty ironic that we are
having this problem with BlackBerries, incidentally, because with the other
smartphones I can just boot them from EAS. My understanding is that BIS uses
OWA for Exchange access. Of course, we can't turn of OWA or Outlook Anywhere.
I also read that I can accomplish this by blocking the BIS IP range in our
firewall. Other posts say you have to do it on the IIS server for OWA. None
of the posts, however seem to want to give up the IP range to be blocked.

Anyone successful at this? How?

Ah, ok. Our intent is to block all direct access from Android devices. We
don't do Exchange ActiveSync. Our only allowed access is through Good for
Enterprise for androids/iOS and BES for Blackberries.

One thing to note - blocking the IP's will block RIM devices, but I believe
Android has similar features without an ip list to block.

That's why we ended up using the captcha - it block them all. (So far, at
least.)

Thanks for the good advice. It was actually easier than that (if you have
the user's domain/email password). Here are the steps in case anyone else
needs to do this:

 1. On a computer with the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, exit Outlook.
 2. Create a new profile using the Control Panel Mail applet.
 3. Attach that profile to the user's account. You will need the user's
password.
 4. Plug the BB into the computer's USB port.
 5. Start the BlackBerry Desktop Manager (BDM).
 6. The BDM should detect the BB plugged in and ask you how you want to
treat it.
 7. Do not connect it to an enterprise account.
 8. Check to sync organizer data. If prompted, enter the user's login
credentials.
 9. From the main BDM screen, Click Device, Sync by Type. Organizer.
10. Another wizard will pop up where you can choose which components to
sync. You only need to sync the contacts and calendar because Exchange
Active Sync only syncs those components and email. You should probably
choose a one-way sync from phone to Outlook because you are going to
delete the Outlook profile and wipe the old phone when you are done. Do
not check the boxes to replace the data because this could erase the data
already in exchange. Syncing from this point forward is the default for
the calendar, but I chose to sync all items so that the user will have a
historic view as well as future view.
11. Allow it to perform the sync. It will do a test sync first and ask
you to accept the changes.
12. There is no need to export to PST and import to exchange because you
had the profile connected to the Exchange account and the export/sync went
directly to Exchange and not a local file.
13. The EAS device (iPhone, Android or Win Phone or Palm) will pick up the
data from Exchange.

Hope this helps.

[Bes-admins] Duplicate deleted items

2011-05-24 Thread Art Alexion
I have a BB user who is experiencing symptoms in Outlook. Mail that he reads
and deletes in Outlook is showing up duplicated in his deleted items folder,
one read, one unread. Mail that he reads and deletes on his Blackberry only
appears once in the deleted items folder, read.

I have Googled this and the problem seems to be shared by others, but without a
useful solution.

The problem seems to coincide with moving this user over to BES 5.0.3 from 4.1.7

The problem does not seem to be affecting other users.

I really don't care so much about this individual user's problem, because it
only occurs in deleted items, but I am concerned that it may be a symptom of a
larger infrastructure problem.

Re: [Bes-admins] Migration

Sorry for not being more responsive to your questions. I am planning the same.
We have a support contract with RIM. I asked for a temporary SRP so that I
could do this. RIM responded by creating a new support ticket for sending me
the SRP and kit, and closing the original inquiry.

That was over 3 weeks ago. It is still showing pending. I would expect this is
pretty routine, so I don't know what is taking so long.

Is this a normal turn around, or do I need to contact RIM again?

Subject: [Bes-admins] Migration

Hello,

I want to upgrade my BES 4.1 on an old hardware to BES 5.0 ( on a new
hardware) by using knife-edge cutover.

I want to make sure that the users will not require re-activation, and i dont
want to use the bulk mode of the transporter tool.

Can you please guide me step by step to upgrade bes 4.1 to 5.0 with installing
on a new server and upgrading the existing configuration database?

I have checked one of the forums about some SQL changes but i don't want to
risk my environment , please have a look on these changes and tell me is it
valid :

Re: [Bes-admins] Fwd: Blackberry manager showing nothing inthe bottompane (SOLVED)

2010-09-15 Thread Art Alexion
We are running Windows Server 2003R2 Enterprise with MSDE.

IE8 has not caused any problems in our network when run in a native OS, like
Win7 or Server 2008R2, but we have seen a lot of mischief with IE dependent
apps when the IE is a backport to server 2003 or XP Pro. Lawson is another
SQL/IE dependent system where IE8 has caused problems.

Ultimately, just removing IE8 and rebooting fixed all of our problems with BES.
My guess (I don't really know) is that Blackberry Manager 4.1 uses the IE
engine to render the status pane and right click menus.

Re: [Bes-admins] Blackberry manager showing nothing in the bottom pane (SOLVED)

There was an unintended update to IE8 on our Win Server 2003 hosted BES.
Blocked the bottom pane from displaying and prevented right click menus. BES
4.1.7.

As soon as we removed IE8, everything started working again.

I don't know if this is an errant MS Update issue, or something related to a
misbehaving domain controller (being fixed), or just a BES problem.

Redirection is working fine. Users are visible. The bottom pane which
normally shows status data on that user and has some common command links is
blank. Right clicking a user produces nothing. In short, things are working,
but I can't manage.

What if you run it in compatibility mode? IE 8 breaks Virtual Server

example. How about with Firefox? Just curious.

[Bes-admins] Weird duplicate email problem

I have a user who is getting duplicate emails, anywhere from 6-20
minutes difference in time stamp. At first, I suspected a BIS account

Nope.

I have a meeting Tuesday afternoon with the execs who are pushing android. I am
working on a document geared to non-technical execs, this weekend to address
the issue.

I don't know how well it will translate for other organizations -- we tend to
be looser than most with security -- but I will be glad to share it with others
who ask off-list.

Thanks for all of the comments. I got a lot of ideas for my arguments from this

I think the BES admin needs support from the CIO. The policy needs to come from
that level. If the top IT execs do not understand, then it is your

However, I am not seeing a comprehensive maintenance solution. I plan
to remind one of the managers pushing for this about the time she was
1000 miles away on business and dropped her BB in the toilet. She
stopped into the nearest Verizon store. Got her insurance replacement,
I did an OTA Activation, and all of her stuff was there on the new

Because of the culture of my company, I am probably less security
conscious than most on this list, however, I really don't like the idea

I have a personal gmail account, so I'm not saying I wouldn't do it,
just saying that I prefer not to.

Re: [Bes-admins] Droid X

2010-07-22 Thread Art Alexion
A lot of people like k9mail. I tried it, but prefer the HTC client that
came with my Evo for exchange, and the gmail client for my personal
accounts.

A lot of this discussion has centered on remote wipe, but I want to
reiterate that centralized management is my concern. I have a small
installation, probably 40 BBs started with BPS 20 months ago, and moved
to BES about 6 months ago when we outgrew BPS.

Phones are just a part of my job.

I used to support Treos. With the Treos I could spend hours on a single
phone problem, and these problems occurred at the rate of 2 a week
average. Since adopting a BB server solution, I probably have only had
a single individual phone problem that didn't involve activation. The
rest have all been global (CDO and MAPI) that I could fix centrally and
easily.

Probably my most frequent service call comes from people asking if they
need to change their BB password when they change their network
password.

I don't want to go back to the situation I had with Treos. With my
workload, I can't afford to. I can honestly say that, among my systems
responsibilities, BES is the most stable technology that I use.

 up themselves.

I gave up the BB for Android and I use Touchdown for my Exchange
messages. It does support exchange security policies and the app
itself does a pretty good job of syncing and giving a lot of
functionality. The app also has a remote kill command. Basically on
the device you come up with a kill code, should your device go
missing, send yourself an email with TDKill and your kill code in the
subject and the app clears itself so that's always an option. We are
also running Exchange 2007, there is a built in tool to manage mobile
 devices and do remote wipes.

 Just a thought.

From the When bad things are really good Dept.:

I have an HTC Evo 4G as my personal phone. It has a fast processor,
CMDA, WiFi, WiMax, a good GPS, and an FM tuner. Performance is great.
With all radios on, the battery lasts 12 hours on standby.

I have a BB Curve 8330. It has a very weak GPS and decent, not great,
CMDA. WAP web sites take forever to load. Often the processor gets so
overwhelmed, that the trackball stops responding. As a result, the
batter can last 3 days with frequent emailing and light voice use.

My concerns are less about security, and more about a lack of central
administration and backup that BES provides. That plus the fact that we have
too few users to invest in mastering and administering two technologies -- with
one person -- me. BES has worked so well with us that BB administration takes
up less than 5% of my week. I am afraid of how much time Android
administration will take.

had to dig into some past emails to gather data on this…if these issues are
outdated please let me know!)

Find my Phone can be disabled to prevent us from sending a wipe command

For an iPhone to receive a Remote Wipe – you need to be connected to the
internet. Removing the SIM card takes the phone off the grid.

As far as security goes, I dont see how removing the sim from a blackberry is
any different. You simply cannot wipe a phone after it has been unplugged from
the network.

But what makes Blackberry such a nice corp phone is the combo of remote wipe
and local wipe after X amount of password attempts. That way even if the phone
is unplugged it will wipe if 'brute forced'.

Manpower - we don't have the manpower to learn a new OS (or multiple OS).
Security - Cannot remote wipe these phones if SIM Card is removed PRIOR to your

I am starting to get pressure from some top level managers to support
these. Coincidentally, they were the same managers who 2 years ago
drove the decision to switch from Palm Treos to BB. Of course, when
they drove the BB decision, they had no idea about the task of deploying
BES, they just think a phone is a phone from an IT perspective. In the
two years since I have deployed BES and taught myself how to use it, I
think it is one of the best decisions they made for me. No more running
to desks to fix one phone at a time.

My personal phone is the HTC Evo. I love the phone. But I don't want
to support individual phones again. I just don't have the resources,
and don't want to take a step backwards in efficiency.

Whether you have faced the issue with iPhones or Android, I am looking
for suggestions on how you resisted management pressure to support these
non-enterprise phones.

This is the policy I would like to adopt. Unfortunately, the people
driving this decision are of sufficient management level that I will get
sucked into going beyond the written policy.

I have a meeting next Tuesday. I don't do Powerpoint, but I am putting
together a dog and pony show with regard to costs, reliability, remote
data transfer, etc. My hope is that once I am done, they will (1) be
embarrassed to spend the money, and (2) afraid that things that used to
be correctable OTA, while they were traveling, will be unavailable.

This means that if a user gets an EAS phone that doesn't fully support
EAS and our security policies, and it doesn't work, they are out of
luck. Many Android devices don't support EAS security policies
correctly, and will not sync. iPhones had this issue when they first
 came out too.

By supporting EAS, but not the phones, then IT won't spend more than a
few minutes assisting a user with initial setup.

Security issues obviously are not addressed, but top management made
that decision. We evaluated Good and found that it wasn't what we
 wanted.

[Bes-admins] mobile me and spam

2010-06-02 Thread Art Alexion
BES 4.1.7

A user is having a problem with a personal mail account which concerns
me about out BES server. I know very little about Apple's Mobile Me.
He is getting a lot of spam in his sent mail folder which mobile me is
identifying as originating on his Blackberry.

Usually, in my experience, this kind of spam is either a forged from, or
a botted windows computer. The thing that concerns me is that Mobile Me
is identifying it as coming from the BlackBerry. A botted BlackBerry?
A threat to BES?

That would be a very good thing. I don't know why it wasn't done
before.

In our environment we've had a ton of issues with Exchange ActiveSync
phones. Android doesn't support the two basic security functions
correctly (passcode required, 1-hour timer before locking phone) and
ends up not working. This was a problem with iPone until they updated
to support EAS better after a year.

Yeah. I was thinking of it for my personal phone. I have always had
Palm stuff going back to the Palm III, but Palm OS 5.x was a disaster in
my opinion, and I don't like the Pre hardware. I will keep my BB for my
work phone.

After working with EAS, BES, and even a GoodLink server, I'm a firm
believer that BlackBerry is the lesser of the evils...at least in a
 corporate environment.

I totally agree. As a user, the BB isn't my favorite, but as an IT
administrator, BPS and now BES has been a godsend. There are people I
used to have to help every week who I haven't seen in the 15 months
since we switched to BB.

[Bes-admins] Filters on non-BES accounts

2010-03-15 Thread Art Alexion
Personal issue. Are filters for BIS mail broken or incompatible with
otherwise BES attached phones?

I added a couple of personal accounts, and none of the filters seem to
work. Filters always worked well with my BES account. Tried setting on
either the phone or the web. Neither worked.

Also, I tried using the gmail plugin from RIM on these accounts and
didn't see the threading that was promised. When I first set up the
accounts, I got an email from BIS that it had recognized them as gmail
accounts.

Last, I can't get into the folders (labels), like I can with the BES
hosted exchange account. Is BIS accessing the gmail accounts as POP
accounts instead of IMAP? If so, how is it retrieving stuff that skips
the INBOX?

Yeah. I tried this before and didn't like it. I think this is the

better, though, at least it doesn't interfere with my BES mail.

Does anyone, besides me, think it is odd that BIS mail creates an icon

message app only?

Any limitations that the gmail app has (such as selecting links in an
email) I get around by just hitting the gmail over the browser.

I wish this was better.  I'm thinking Droid for my next personal phone;
I can access the personal mail from there.
