[Bes-admins] locating a misplaced device
this is a basic question, but not something I've had to do since moving to BES 5. I have the location service configured for the device, but can't figure out how to view the data. Google and RIM only seem to want to tell me about how to configure, but not how to use. -- Art Alexion Systems Engineer -- Infrastructure Engineering Group Resources for Human Development [cid:811229B5-76A2-4819-A901-08AA8B3EF92E] inline: 875212B6-DE1E-416A-B033-FEE8CCC4D89F[176].png___ Bes-Admins mailing list Bes-Admins@dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutages.com/mailman/listinfo/bes-admins http://www.dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutagenews.com RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Bes-admins - Bes-Admins mailing list is sponsored by mixedmartialarts.com. http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/
Re: [Bes-admins] Mobile Fusion
It seems they all do. The problem is that every carrier and every manufacturer customizes Android so much that it is near impossible to address all of the idiosyncrasies. So they all seem to have standardized on Touchdown. Of course, most allow you to skip Touchdown and just configure the exchange account separate from the MDM account. We use MaaS360 from Fiberlink. Not doing Touchdown though it would make activations easier. Managing Android is a PITA. I've been doing it for about a year, and am liking it less and less each day. While I am not a huge fan of Apple as a company, their iOS products are standard, stable and easily managed. No agent to install on the device for management; it is all based on certificate based encryption. Re: [Bes-admins] Blackberry Mobile Fusion
I compared the pricing for SaaS based MDM and Fusion. It seems that a lot depends on the number of users and how your BES support provider is charging you. Fusion server is free and you pay for the CALs. However, you also pay for a support contract from RIM or another provider. For the SaaS solution we only pay a monthly, per-user fee. Support is included and the vendor owns and maintains the server. If your support provider charges by the number of users/devices, you have to compare that with what you are paying for SaaS MDM in addition to the cost of the CALs. -- Art Alexion Systems Engineer -- Infrastructure Engineering Group Resources for Human Development [cid:044B0A00-12E3-4A28-882F-4F8F73B56F7B] On 3/29/12 2:13 PM, Moller, Doreen doreen.mol...@merck.commailto:doreen.mol...@merck.com wrote: or those that already have another MDM system in place, it’s not going to help much. inline: 875212B6-DE1E-416A-B033-FEE8CCC4D89F[66].png___ Bes-Admins mailing list Bes-Admins@dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutages.com/mailman/listinfo/bes-admins http://www.dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutagenews.com RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Bes-admins - Bes-Admins mailing list is sponsored by Dataoutagenews.com. http://www.dataoutagenews.com

Re: [Bes-admins] Playbook 2.0
We had a big rollout of AD/Exchange accounts over the past 3 or 4 months. With that a lot of phone activations with personally owned and branch owned devices. Our BBs went from about 60 to about 75 or 80. Our Android, iPhone and corresponding tablets went from 0 to about 220. In fact, we had branch users who were using BESX and switched to Android just to avoid paying the BES data plan. The CALs were coming out of our budget. [Bes-admins] Blocking BIS access to our Exchange
I have Googled this with minimal luck. We have some users who are accessing their corporate mail via BIS. Though we freely provide BES accounts, I suspect these are users with personal devices who don't want to pay for an Enterprise Data Plan. Pretty ironic that we are having this problem with BlackBerries, incidentally, because with the other smartphones I can just boot them from EAS. My understanding is that BIS uses OWA for Exchange access. Of course, we can't turn of OWA or Outlook Anywhere. I also read that I can accomplish this by blocking the BIS IP range in our firewall. Other posts say you have to do it on the IIS server for OWA. None of the posts, however seem to want to give up the IP range to be blocked. Anyone successful at this? On 6/7/11 11:22 AM, Sobey, Richard A r.so...@imperial.ac.uk wrote: Personally, I'd use the BB desktop manager software to sync the contacts with a temporary Outlook profile. From there, you can export those contacts into a PST, then import the PST into the contacts folder into Exchange. Thanks for the good advice. It was actually easier than that (if you have the user's domain/email password). Here are the steps in case anyone else needs to do this: 1. On a computer with the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, exit Outlook. 2. Create a new profile using the Control Panel Mail applet. 3. Attach that profile to the user's account. You will need the user's password. 4. Plug the BB into the computer's USB port. 5. Start the BlackBerry Desktop Manager (BDM). 6. The BDM should detect the BB plugged in and ask you how you want to treat it. 7. Do not connect it to an enterprise account. 8. Check to sync organizer data. If prompted, enter the user's login credentials. 9. From the main BDM screen, Click Device, Sync by Type. Organizer. 10. Another wizard will pop up where you can choose which components to sync. You only need to sync the contacts and calendar because Exchange Active Sync only syncs those components and email. You should probably choose a one-way sync from phone to Outlook because you are going to delete the Outlook profile and wipe the old phone when you are done. Do not check the boxes to replace the data because this could erase the data already in exchange. Syncing from this point forward is the default for the calendar, but I chose to sync all items so that the user will have a historic view as well as future view. 11. Allow it to perform the sync. It will do a test sync first and ask you to accept the changes. 12. There is no need to export to PST and import to exchange because you had the profile connected to the Exchange account and the export/sync went directly to Exchange and not a local file. 13. The EAS device (iPhone, Android or Win Phone or Palm) will pick up the data from Exchange. Hope this helps. -- Art Alexion Systems Engineer -- Infrastructure Engineering Group Resources for Human Development ___ Bes-Admins mailing list Bes-Admins@dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutages.com/mailman/listinfo/bes-admins http://www.dataoutages.com http://www.dataoutagenews.com RSS Feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Bes-admins - Bes-Admins mailing list is sponsored by Dataoutagenews.com. http://www.dataoutagenews.com
[Bes-admins] Duplicate deleted items
I have a BB user who is experiencing symptoms in Outlook. Mail that he reads and deletes in Outlook is showing up duplicated in his deleted items folder, one read, one unread. Mail that he reads and deletes on his Blackberry only appears once in the deleted items folder, read. I have Googled this and the problem seems to be shared by others, but without a useful solution. The problem seems to coincide with moving this user over to BES 5.0.3 from 4.1.7 The problem does not seem to be affecting other users. Re: [Bes-admins] Droid X
A lot of people like k9mail. I tried it, but prefer the HTC client that came with my Evo for exchange, and the gmail client for my personal accounts. A lot of this discussion has centered on remote wipe, but I want to reiterate that centralized management is my concern. I have a small installation, probably 40 BBs started with BPS 20 months ago, and moved to BES about 6 months ago when we outgrew BPS. Phones are just a part of my job. I used to support Treos. With the Treos I could spend hours on a single phone problem, and these problems occurred at the rate of 2 a week average. Since adopting a BB server solution, I probably have only had a single individual phone problem that didn't involve activation. The rest have all been global (CDO and MAPI) that I could fix centrally and easily. Probably my most frequent service call comes from people asking if they need to change their BB password when they change their network password. I don't want to go back to the situation I had with Treos. With my workload, I can't afford to. I gave up the BB for Android and I use Touchdown for my Exchange messages. It does support exchange security policies and the app itself does a pretty good job of syncing and giving a lot of functionality. The app also has a remote kill command. Basically on the device you come up with a kill code, should your device go missing, send yourself an email with TDKill and your kill code in the subject and the app clears itself so that's always an option. We are also running Exchange 2007, there is a built in tool to manage mobile devices and do remote wipes. From the When bad things are really good Dept.: I have an HTC Evo 4G as my personal phone. It has a fast processor, CMDA, WiFi, WiMax, a good GPS, and an FM tuner. Performance is great. With all radios on, the battery lasts 12 hours on standby. I have a BB Curve 8330. It has a very weak GPS and decent, not great, CMDA. WAP web sites take forever to load. Often the processor gets so overwhelmed, that the trackball stops responding. As a result, the batter can last 3 days with frequent emailing and light voice use. My concerns are less about security, and more about a lack of central administration and backup that BES provides. That plus the fact that we have too few users to invest in mastering and administering two technologies -- with one person -- me. BES has worked so well with us that BB administration takes up less than 5% of my week. I am afraid of how much time Android administration will take. For those not familiar with Android and Linux root users, root is the super user, the Adminisrator. I have a meeting next Tuesday. I don't do Powerpoint, but I am putting together a dog and pony show with regard to costs, reliability, remote data transfer, etc. My hope is that once I am done, they will (1) be embarrassed to spend the money, and (2) afraid that things that used to be correctable OTA, while they were traveling, will be unavailable. [Bes-admins] Filters on non-BES accounts
Personal issue. Are filters for BIS mail broken or incompatible with otherwise BES attached phones? I added a couple of personal accounts, and none of the filters seem to work. Filters always worked well with my BES account. Tried setting on either the phone or the web. Neither worked. Also, I tried using the gmail plugin from RIM on these accounts and didn't see the threading that was promised. When I first set up the accounts, I got an email from BIS that it had recognized them as gmail accounts. Last, I can't get into the folders (labels), like I can with the BES hosted exchange account. Is BIS accessing the gmail accounts as POP accounts instead of IMAP?
