[cayugabirds-l] Osprey nest

2024-04-22 Thread David McDermitt
An Osprey flew over me this morning as I drove down Middaugh rd in
Brooktondale just off Coddington road. It lifted off from a nest on a
telephone pole right across from a small pond near the bend in the road.
The nest looks precarious as I didn't notice a platform, but maybe there is.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey Cam: Now streaming!

2024-04-16 Thread Barbara B. Eden
We're excited to announce that the camera viewing the ospreys at Salt Point is
now streaming live. Feel free to share the link.
See it at: http://www.youtube.com/@OspreysofSaltPoint

>From the description:
This nest was built by Orpheus in 2013, and with his two mates Ophelia
(2013--2022) and Ursula (2022--current), they have reared many healthy
fledglings over the years. The nest is ideally located within the Salt Point
Natural Area in Lansing, NY, at the confluence of Salmon Creek, a fast-flowing
trout stream, and fish-rich Cayuga Lake. Orpheus and his mate continually tend
their nest built atop a 55' dedicated nesting platform with a spectacular 360º
view-and protection against marauding great-horned owls.

This nest camera is solar-powered, operating in one of the cloudiest areas in
the USA. After a streak of consecutive overcast or stormy days, the batteries
drain and the recording may stop. After a few hours of sunshine, all will
return to normal. High winds may also cause noise from the camera housing.

Special thanks to Pat Tyrrell and the Town of Lansing's Parks & Recreation
Department, Candace E. Cornell, Ben Heller of Computer Room, and Friends of
Salt Point volunteers for their extraordinary work in getting this camera
installed and streaming.

Read Candace E. Cornell's "On Osprey Time"
(onospreytime.blogspot.com.) for the latest
on nest life and all things Ospreys.

Regards,
Board of Directors,
Friends of Salt Point

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey pair at nest, Cass Park Union Field, 3/25 sunset

2024-03-25 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon (25 March) about 4:45pm as I walked north past Union Field in
Cass Park, I saw a pair of Ospreys flying around overhead, close together and
quietly. The male carried a small fish. At one point the female briefly alit on
the nest on the platform atop one of the poles for floodlights for the fields.
On my return trip around sunset, I saw them settling in, one on the nest (the
female) and one on the adjacent perch (the male). My photo is with the eBird
report below.

In between, I walked around Allan Treman. Initially I saw an Osprey perched in
the snag near NYS-89 west of the nest near the SW corner of the park, N of the
maintenance building and Hangar Theater. Shortly after that, I saw perhaps the
same Osprey flying E over the marina. I never saw a bird on that nest. However,
later in my walk I saw an Osprey at first on the nest NW of the marina and then
on its adjacent perch. Meanwhile I could see another Osprey hunting over Cayuga
Lake. They did not interact. The Osprey soon left that platform and I did not
see anyone at it afterward, but I did see an Osprey fly SE nearby that platform
carrying a small fish. I did not check the nest at the NW corner of the golf
course today.

Yesterday (24 March) from the S end of the Black Diamond Trail I saw an Osprey
flying south overhead, then turning left, passing over the small patch of
woods, and perching atop one of the sets of floodlights for Union Fields, but
not the set with the nest platform. Immediately a pair of American Crows
perched on the same set and yelled a New York greeting. The Osprey ignored
them, and they quickly went away.

I was only at Allan Treman briefly yesterday. No Osprey was on or near the nest
north of the maintenance building, and none was on the nest NW of the marina,
but an Osprey arrived from the SE and circled over the marina awhile, looking
down for fish. And as I went south again I saw an Osprey perched on another of
the sets of lights at Union Field.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey nesting at Game Farm soccer fields?

2023-06-30 Thread Candace E. Cornell
There is nothing more important to an Osprey than it's nest. It is an
investment for the future and the glue that keeps the family together.
Nests are used year after year and passed down to the next generation.
The birds continually work on their nests all season adding sticks, twigs,
and softer materials. to keep up with the changing form of the nest as the
season progresses. At the start of the season they build up the nest and
make a a indented egg cup. As the chicks develop and move about the nest,
the sides flatten but a rim is still maintained. By fledge time, the nest
is flat and ready to be a landing zone. The Ospreys return the next year to
reshape the nest and make a new nest cup. The cycle continues and the nest
grows through the years reaching 300-500 lbs. or heavier.

The function of bringing grass to the nest mid season is probably to
sweeten the floor of the nest as Dave mentioned, covering up nest debris,
but I've never seen a discussion of it. Parents working new sticks into the
nest probably demonstrates to the nestlings the basics of nest building. As
the chicks mature, they become more interested in the nest and help to move
sticks around.

Recently I also saw an Osprey bringing a double fistful of grass to the nest in
the field NW of Allan Treman marina, when there were young in the nest who are
half grown. I think it’s normal. I don’t know the function, and maybe someone
more knowledgeable can say whether it helps cool the nest, or make it more
comfortable, or cover the remains of fish meals, or deter parasites, or some
other benefit. Earlier in the season I have also seen an Osprey bring a double
fistful of soggy brown (rotten?) vegetation from a nearby waterway, perhaps as
nest lining before eggs are laid. Ospreys also continue to bring sticks to add
to the nest even when there are eggs or young in the nest, which to me seems a
bit awkward and risky, but that’s the perspective of someone who is no good at
fishing or flying, so who am I to judge?

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey article

2023-06-22 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Candace Cornell has published her long-awaited article on the impressive
increase in nesting Ospreys around Cayuga Lake -

- in Sept. 2022 issue (Vol. 72, #3) of “The Kingbird”, the journal of the NYS
Ornithological Association (NYSOA).
This issue was just sent to members of NYSOA.

THANKS to all those who helped Candace amass all the data that went into this
report, including Dave Collum, & to Karen Edelstein for the excellent maps.
Thanks also to NYSEG & Paul Paradine & Paul Batz & crews for providing so many
sturdy & safe osprey nesting platforms around the lake.

2023-04-05 Thread Jane Leff
Thanks! I just googled these ponds and hope to go birding there if it’s
permitted. I never hear of it as a birding destination so I bet it’s very
limited to the public.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey @ Stewart Park

2023-03-27 Thread Suan Yong
At Stewart Park this morning I heard them saw an Osprey fly by, the call both
familiar and unrecognized at first as my gray matter librarian had to dust off
my database of summer bird sounds that had been packed away for the winter.

A singing bluebird checked out the nestbox closest to the nw corner trailhead
around the swan pen Fuertes sanctuary. Sad to see the piles remains of the
mighty willow tree on the other side of the boathouse.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey on Myer's Hill platform

2022-02-25 Thread Robyn Bailey
For all concerned, I did vet this observation as best I could before posting it
to the list. Janice said she was 100% sure of what she saw, and noted areas of
white that were distinct from Bald Eagle. Ospreys are a fixture of life for
those of us who live near Myers/Salt Point where they are literal yard birds.

Dave, I leave it up to you whether to include it. I haven’t seen the bird on
the platform personally.

A bird of prey on an Osprey Platform is not necessarily an Osprey. This past
Tuesday (22 Feb) I took photos of the platform at Union Field in Ithaca’s Cass
Park occupied by a Red-tailed Hawk.

Please, whenever you are surprised by the presence of a bird which might be out
of its usual season or out of its usual range, take a moment to note what it
was about that bird - what identifying field marks - which said to you that it
was the species which is not expected to be there rather than any other similar
species which is more likely to be in the area. That is basic information to
include in any rare bird report. Plus I find that going through this exercise
with every “year bird” I encounter helps me remember the special traits of the
species and wakes up the part of my brain which recognizes them (picture the
ganglia yawning and stretching and getting ready for spring birding).

Thanks! It really helps me out when I’m trying to figure out what are the first
arrivals of each species in the Cayuga Lake Basin. Unfortunately I must ignore
many eBird reports because they neglect to describe what they saw.

Indeed, it is very early. I looked at the bird club’s earliest first arrival

2022-02-22 Thread Candace E. Cornell
Robyn,

Thanks for the additional info. The March 5 arrival date in 2016 was a
fluke. Although their arrival dates are getting a day or two earlier each
year, Feb 22 is a full three weeks ahead of when I expect them.

I didn't see any Ospreys in the Lansing area earlier and will continue to
check daily. Please let me know if you have any Osprey sightings. Hello to
Paul.

Many thanks!

Hi birders,
At 9:30am this morning my neighbor Janice Levy reported an Osprey perched atop

this platform and drive by it every day, so I'm trusting her id.

Will be looking out for it on my drive home!

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey on new 5 & 20 disc/saucer

2021-03-29 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Sun. 3/29/21 My son & I saw an osprey on the south side of #3 "flying
saucer" along 5 & 20 west of the refuge entrance. How sad to see all the
former, familiar nests totally gone.

It's reported Os in FL have accepted these contraptions so let's hope
"our Os" also will.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2021-03-20 Thread Candace E. Cornell
I saw my first Cayuga Lake Osprey perched on the third nest west of the
MNWR entrance from 2:05-3pm. this afternoon. It flew off and returned with
building material several times within the hour I was there. I checked
about 80 Osprey nests without any other sightings.

The snow geese are still south of Cayuga State Park. It's a phenomena not
to be missed while they are still here. The sky was swirling with birds,
many incoming, with many thousands congregated along the shoreline.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey sightings

2021-03-10 Thread Candace E. Cornell
Captain Woody McKenzie of the M/V Teal reported seeing an Osprey on March 8
flying over Ithaca's Dog Park. Woody, my colleague at Discover Cayuga Lake,
keeps a log of Osprey sightings around Cayuga Lake during the season.

Please keep an eye out near the Allen Treman Marine Park Osprey platform
and the Osprey nest platform in the Cass Park Ball fields area. These males
tend to arrive a few days before the others, however arrival dates are no
longer predictable. In addition, please keep your eye on the Osprey nests
along the lake. I'm in NH but will be returning next week. Please be my
eyes while I am away and report the sightings to cayugabirds-l. Thank you
so very much and good birding!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2021-03-01 Thread Candace E. Cornell
This sighting is very early for an Osprey. The Osprey used to arrive in the
Cayuga Lake Basin around April 1 like the swallows of Capistrano. For their
first three years, the Salt Point Natural Area pair would reunite on
April 5 like clockwork. Six years ago, things started changing. The Osprey
started arriving earlier, by a few days, each year. Last year they skipped
a week and the male returned on March 15. There was an earlier sighting,
around March 1, but I did not have confidence in that sighting. However,
Diana Whitings knows her birds and has confidence in her sister's ID. I'm
not sure what to think as this can be a confusing time with eagles as Dave
Nutter stated especially when compounded with the affects of climate change.

Please keep your eyes posted and report any Osprey sighting—thank you!

Don't be taken aback by the 4-5 Canada Geese decoys along Rt. 90. NYSEG put
them up to keep the Ospreys from nesting in those places. I don't think the
Osprey will be intimidated, but we'll see.

Eyes to the sky!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2021-03-01 Thread Dave Nutter
Hi Diana,

Osprey would be new for the Cayuga Lake Basin 2021 list. This is early though.
It’s so early that there is only one eBird record ever for Osprey in February
in NYS north of Long Island, and that was several years ago south of Kingston
in Ulster County. This year the northernmost eBird report of Osprey in the past
month was on the 27th in Maryland.

It’s certainly possible. Birds fly. There have been plenty of south winds
lately. Ospreys nest along 5&20 by the refuge. I am as interested as anyone in
finding out if birds are migrating sooner, and Ospreys have surprised me with
early returns to Myers in the recent past.

But a report of Osprey even at the very end of February suggests some care be
taken, particularly since there are plenty of immature Bald Eagles around, and
in some plumages they share some of the color pattern of Ospreys. Bald Eagles
also nest earlier than Ospreys and have even been known to take over Osprey
nests before the Ospreys return, so Bald Eagles or Red-tailed Hawks or other
raptors might be near those nests.

So, I’m wondering if you would mind asking your sister what about the bird said
“Osprey” to her instead of some other large raptor - shape, behavior, pattern,
etc. Thanks so much. And thanks for your photos and reports. It’s a joy to hear
what is happening all around us.

[cayugabirds-l] osprey nest south of Covert?

2020-04-01 Thread Alicia Plotkin
For the past two years, osprey have nested on a cell phone tower that is
just south of the hamlet of Covert, on the east side of Rte 96.  When I
looked earlier this year, the nest seemed to be missing but I didn't
stop and check carefully until today.  There may be a few remnant
sticks, I'm not sure, but certainly the main structure is gone.  A lone
osprey was sitting on the tower, don't know if the mate also is back or
if they will try to rebuild it.

Anyone know what happened to the nest?  Did it blow down (seems unlikely
since it was well-nestled in the various girders) or was it removed?

[cayugabirds-l] osprey

2019-04-23 Thread Marty Schlabach
The osprey nest on the top of the cell tower along Rt 96 just outside of the
hamlet of Covert, Seneca County, is active again. My earliest sighting was
April 11.

More recently, while I was driving by, I noticed an osprey sitting atop a
utility pole by the road, and as I drove by, it dropped to the ground, picked
something up without landing, and flew off. I thought it was prey, though I
didn't know that ospreys fed on anything besides fish. I suppose it could have
been grabbing nesting material, but it looked like it was carrying a rodent.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] osprey

2019-03-10 Thread Candace Cornell
This is a few weeks early for ospreys, but possible. I'm guessing it's
migrating through. (It's a great time for
them to get lake trout.)

Breeding ospreys start appearing on Cayuga Lake starting about March 25,
although most return in early April.
I usually start looking around the 20th just to be safe, but I've never
seen one at either end of the lake before
the 25th. The older birds return first, followed by younger birds.

Until recently, ospreys were like the swallows at Capistrano, returning on
the exact same day each year. However,
in the last three years, a number of nests I observe have been arriving a
day or two earlier each year. Birds that
traditionally arrived on April 5 until 2016 returned on March 31 in
2018—climate change suspected.

Eyes to the sky!

I looked at eBird and the last one recorded was October. It really looked
more like an osprey than a juvenile bald eagle.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2018-05-01 Thread Dave Nutter
On Sunday afternoon I was biking south along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail south
of the Farmers’ Market. The weather was chilly and cloudy, and the racing crews
were gone, so no people on boats or paddleboards were on the Inlet. An Osprey
was overhead. It did some confusing maneuvers before plunging feet first and
going completely underwater. A couple seconds later it emerged back into view,
and in one motion took flight carrying a very substantial fish, which probably
weighed a substantial portion of or perhaps equaled its own weight. The Osprey
flew with its prey to one of the poles supporting the lights for Union Fields,
but not the nest. It took awhile for it to gain the elevation.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey on nest, briefly

2018-04-28 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon one Osprey stood on the nest with its wings partly spread
(Mantling? Solicitation?) while calling for a long time. Meanwhile a second
Osprey kited fairly low over the occupied nest, then circled and repeated
several times.

It looks like an Osprey is incubating (white of a head low and a bit hard to
see) on the nest at the east end of Stewart Park and also on the nest in Union
Fields.

perching, it descended toward the bird on the nest talons first. The

[cayugabirds-l] osprey on hogs hole platfrom

2018-04-25 Thread Nancy Cusumano
This morning as I drove by, there was an osprey sitting on the platform
that is just north of hogs hole, but south of the Hangar, right along rt
89. There is often red tail who hunts from that platform but this is the
first time I've seen an osprey on it. It also looked like there was a new
stick or maybe sticks on it. I will keep a watch, as I drive past 2x a day.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey egg laying

2018-04-14 Thread Candace Cornell
Cindy,

It's probable that the Treman State Marine Park nest does have eggs.

The evidence Is that there will be an adult incubating at all times. The
female will do most of the incubating, but the male should give her breaks
a few times a day.

The ospreys at Treman (nicknamed Treman & Marina) are probably about 10
years old now. Older (>10 yrs.), highly experienced pairs can lay their
eggs earlier than younger ones, and now that they are almost 10yrs old,
it's possible that Marina laid as early as 7-10 days after her arrival. It
all depends on how rapidly her ovaries matured. Two weeks is the norm for
most established nests. Younger pairs with little or no nest usually take
longer to court and build, and may wait 10–20+ days before laying.

Ophelia at Salt Point is not on eggs yet and Orpheus was still sky dancing
for her today. It should be any day.

Eyes to the sky!

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey Talk Wed. April 4, 7pm

2018-04-02 Thread Candace Cornell
The public is welcome to attend my talk on ospreys this Wednesday, April 4,
at 7 pm. in the auditorium at Kendal. I'll concentrate on the basic life
histories of ospreys in the Cayuga Basin and at Lansing's Salt Point. I've
collected beautiful photographs so it should be visually entertaining.

The ospreys are back!

Eyes to the sky!
Candace

Please email me with all reports of osprey nests you see in the Finger
Lakes and across NY, which are not on the Cayuga Lake Osprey Trail
.
Please include the location and/or GPS coordinates. The information we
obtain is used to help protect and conserve ospreys, our primary
bio-indicators of our water quality and the health of the environment.
Thank you for helping in our osprey surveying efforts.

2018-03-19 Thread Nancy Cusumano
Hi Candace,

There’s an osprey nest, at least there was last summer, across the lake from
the one you are talking about but it’s on private property. It is just south of
Taughannock st Park, and just south of a home my neighbors have. It is by no
means the tallest tree, though, as the lake shore cliff rises above it. They
were feeding young when we were there last August. Lots of ospreys around these
days, so good to see.

2018-03-19 Thread Candace Cornell
I'd love to find that osprey's nest—I have been looking for a few years.
Ospreys don't nest in woods, but in the open where they can see 360 degrees
to spot predators—eagles and great horned owls. So if you are looking for
the nest, look in fields or on a cliff face in the area. There can not be
any trees around that are taller than the nest.

PLEASE let me know if you find it!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey data

2017-11-07 Thread Dave Nutter
The occupied Osprey platform is not at Robert Treman SP but at Allan H Treman
State Marine Park in the field north of the marina. The unoccupied Hogs Hole
platform is in the same park but west of the marina. Union Field is in adjacent
Cass Park, and the Newman Golf Course platform is at the northwest corner of
the course next to the woods along the east bank of Cayuga Inlet. Last year I
repeatedly saw an Osprey carrying prey south along the Inlet, but I don’t know
where the nest was/is.

Great Blue Herons will commute several miles between their nest colony and
their feeding sites. I have seen colonies in upper Robert Treman SP, and in
state forests in the hills years ago, but I don’t know of any current nearby
locations. I think there have been fewer Great Blue Herons along Cayuga Inlet
north of the bridges since the Cayuga Waterfront Trail was put in past the
NYSDOT yard north of the college boathouses, and since the surge in popularity
of kayaking and paddle-boarding, because these herons don’t like people to come
too close, but I have noticed several Great Blue Herons at dusk around the
mouth of Fall Creek, so they may be feeding in the area when fewer people are
present.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Osprey data

2017-11-07 Thread Candace Cornell
Gabriel,

Pardon my delayed response, as I was traveling I have nesting data on 124
osprey nests as part of my Cayuga Lake Basin Osprey Project and can easily
tell you the few osprey nests by the Cayuga inlet. I know where there are
GBHE rookeries, in the area, but not near Stewart Park and the Inlet where
the birds hang out.

Osprey nest occupied by breeding pairs in the southern end of lake: Stewart
Park behind Youth Bureau, Robert Treman Marine Park, Union Field. This is
the southern point of their nesting in the basin as far as I know. Let me
know if you find any.

Osprey nest platforms not yet occupied in the southern end of lake:
southend of Stewart Park footbridge to Newman Golf Course, Newman Golf
Course west end, Hogs Hole, and Cherry Street.

Other area osprey pairs that also fish in the inlet and southern end of
Cayuga are nesting at McGowen Fields and the Cornell Ponds.

Query cayugabirds-l
(
cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu
) about the locations of heron rookeries on Six Mile Creek and other
promising places. EBird might also be a help.

Let me know if you need more info or find any nests in the lake's southern
end or inlet that are not listed on the Cayuga Lake Trail Map (below),
which includes 69 nests in the Cayuga Basin visible from public roads.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey in Stewart Park - 2nd brood??

2017-08-28 Thread George Dillmann
Hi all,
It's been fun to see the Osprey still on the nest in Stewart Park (the platform
nearest the lake), and calling and circling in the air nearby. Why would they
still be using a nest this time of the year? Is it possible that they're
raising a 2nd brood?

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Osprey and Blue Heron

2017-07-20 Thread Marie P. Read
Ospreys and Great Blue Herons often have a contentious relationship. These
large herons compete with the Ospreys for nest sites and have been known to
prey on osprey eggs. With their dagger-like bills they are well able to look
after themselves even against a raptor, so I would not view this as heron being
victimized. Nature is competition.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey and Blue Heron

2017-07-19 Thread Poppy Singer
Twice this week I've been at Salt Point and witnessed an Osprey repeatedly
attacking a Great Blue Heron in the water and in the air. The Heron squawks
loudly each attack. It is distressing to see. Does anyone know what this is
about?
(Mr. White-winged Scoter was still there as well)

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey, Pine Warbler, etc.

2017-05-23 Thread W. Larry Hymes
While walking Beebe Lake/Mundy early yesterday afternoon, I saw an
OSPREY carrying a fish and heading in a generally easterly direction
(going to Game Farm Road??). Also, while walking Comstock Knoll, I once
again heard a PINE WARBLER. Finally, I ran into another birder at the
upper end of Beebe (sorry, can't remember her name!). When we see each
other on rare occasions, we'll discuss what birds we've been seeing.
She was puzzled by the call of one particular bird, which she described
as like a Robin, but with a sore throat. Focusing only on the "sore
throat", I half-heartedly mentioned the possibility of yellow-throated
vireo. I didn't have time to stay there and think what else it might
be, so we left each other, walking in opposite directions. A very short
time later it finally came to me. I said to myself, you dummy it was a
scarlet tanager! By then we were too far apart for me to tell her. I
hope she reads this message!

I had heard a scarlet tanager a few days before at Beebe doing the same
song, and I too was initially perplexed. It took me a short time,
before the name of the bird came to me. Being a mostly casual birder,
at the start of each new season I find myself having difficulty pulling
out the names of birds singing songs that sound all too familiar ---
sort of like starting all over!!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] osprey nest on Warren Rd.

2016-04-21 Thread Candace Cornell
NYSEG crews have been trying to thwart the ospreys from building on the
Warren Road pole as this location presents a serious fire hazard. They hope
to erect an alternative pole nearby in the next few days in an effort to
move the birds. It is not the best place to raise a family, but the ospreys
seem determined. Many thanks to the crews for their help in this relocation.

2016-04-21 Thread AB Clark
That explains the flyover osprey when I was on Winthrop Dr. a couple of days
ago. And on Tuesday also, a bald eagle and a raven (chased off by two resident
crow families) over Muriel. The bald eagle was remarkably low! The raven
looked distinctly young, brownish and broken primaries.
