[cfaussie] Melbourne Adobe Developers end of year dinner

2013-12-16 Thread Peter Robertson
Merry Xmas from MAD.

We are having a get-together this Thursday evening in Carlton for anyone
interested.
Please RSVP at http://www.meetup.com/Melbourne-Adobe-Developers/

We are booked in to Jimmy Watson's Wine Bar, 333 Lygon St, Carlton VIC
3053, Phone:(03) 9347 3985.

Booking is in my name, we have a room, the "House of Lords". People should
enquire at the front bar.
Parking is available in Elgin St, just around the corner from Lygon.
Any tram can be caught in Swanston St, and will go at least as far as
Melbourne Uni which is a short walk to the venue. Trams 1 and 8 pass the
intersection of Elgin and Lygon St, very close to Jimmy's.
Cuisine is varied and quite good with a fair range of prices. Pizza is
also available.
We hope to see you there.
Best wishes

Peter Robertson Co-manager, MAD and Phil Phil Haeusler, Manager, MAD

Phil will run through the workflow of rapidly prototyping, creating and
deploying mobile applications using *PhoneGap Build*,
Adobe's cloud-based service to target multiple devices with a single
   codebase.

PhoneGap Build provides the power and ease of use of Apache Cordova
along with the simplified packaging and distribution of an online based
   service.

Suitable for all web developers, PhoneGap allows you to build and
package native apps for many different platforms using *JavaScript, HTML
   and CSS*.

   Thursday February 14th
The Loop Bar, 23 Meyers Place
   Arrive from 6pm for a 6:30 start.

Our February meetup is our first one at our new venue, The Loop Bar.
The Loop Bar has graciously offered to host us for 2013 at no charge if we
have suitable attendance and bar sales. *So to show your support for
MAD in 2013. We need as many people as possible to attend our February and
   March meetings.*

We know that February 14th is Valentine's Day, and we'll understand if
you decide we're not the most important date you have that night. But we
hope to see you back in March.

But for those of you that can make it, we're looking forward to kicking
off MAD for 2013. We hope to see you there.

   *Call for presenters!*

If you'd like to do more than just attend a MAD meetup, why not consider
proposing a topic and presenting! We're a casual, easy going bunch who
like to learn more about what people are doing with any web related
   technologies.

Presentations can be anything from 5 minutes to a full hour, so don't
feel you have spend days working on the perfect presentation.

And if you're a speaker at a tech conference, we'd love to have you do a
practice run or encore performance for us.

[cfaussie] MAD (Melbourne Adobe Developers) get-together for January 2013

2013-01-11 Thread Peter Robertson
We usually don't catch up over January, but these warm days have made us
think it would be good to catch up for a casual get together after work.

You're invited to come along and catch up with the other Melbourne Adobe
Developers after work on Thursday 17th January from 6pm. There is no
formal presentation, but a discussion on what everyone is working on and
the meetup plans for the year ahead.

We have a limited budget, so depending on turn out we may be able to cover
the first round and a few nibbles.

It's all entirely casual - we'll see you then!

Please RSVP at
Meetup,

[cfaussie] MAD Thursday, November 15, 2012. HTML5 WebSockets and ColdFusion 10 with Ray Camden from Adobe

2012-11-06 Thread Peter Robertson
This month we're pleased to have Ray Camden, developer evangelist from
Adobe present to us on using HTML5 WebSockets with ColdFusion 10.

An introduction to WebSockets and their implementation in ColdFusion. No
previous experience with WebSockets is required, but basic familiarity of
JavaScript would help.

Even if you have not had any experience with ColdFusion, you're still more
than welcome to come and see first hand how simple ColdFusion can make your
server-side development.

Ray is a well known figure in the ColdFusion community and is now working
as a Developer Evangelist for Adobe. Ray will be presenting to us remotely
from the USA, and we're very thankful he's willing to get up in the middle
of the night to do so for us.

You can find out more about Ray at his site http://www.raymondcamden.com/

Date: Thursday, November 15, 2012
Time: 6:30 PM
Location:
CogState
Level 2
255 Bourke Street
Melbourne, VIC, 3000

A note on the door will provide a number to ring for access.

Please register with meetup for a bonus place in our twice-yearly Adobe

Re: [cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers: Searn Corfield, Clojure. 21 Aug **TUESDAY**, 2012

2012-08-21 Thread Peter Robertson
Hear hear, thanks Sean, was a great presentation, very interesting to
contemplate such a different way of expressing intents in code. (I still
feel a bit dizzy). I do hope I can make time to drill in a bit.

Thanks to all those who came along to make it such a great night, and hope
to see many of you next month.
Great also to have some visitors from the Clojure/Functional camps, I'd
like to see more X-pollination; that can only be a good thing.
Andrew, don't consider yourself an 'outsider', you're very welcome any time.

We may need to shift the night again next month due to some jet-setting at
CogState, I'll keep you all posted.

We're also short a presenter for Sept/Oct, given Gavin's move to the
CogState US office. Anyone? Anyone?
Remember, ANY topic of interest to professional web devs, including any of
the JS frameworks, or what about a good look at Mongo or one of the other
NoSQL DBs?
Please let me know if you'd like to do a presentation and remember,
presenters get an extra ticket in the six-monthly software draw.

Cheers

Good point Mark. I'm in touch with the Clojure group co-manager and am
waiting on a link to the post of the event on the Clojure list. Clojure
folk can just reply on their list, and I'll monitor it, just to keep things

[cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers: Searn Corfield, Clojure. 21 Aug **TUESDAY**, 2012

2012-08-03 Thread Peter Robertson
*Please Note: We’ve changed the night from our normal Thursday for this
month to take advantage of Sean’s visit to Melbourne.

Sean Corfield will present on using Clojure alongside CFML.

World Singles has been using CFML for over a decade but in the last couple
of years has decided to add Clojure to the mix, to tackle some of the
interesting issues you can face when you have millions of users and many
gigabytes of data to process. World Singles has been using Clojure in
production for over a year now, alongside CFML. This talk will introduce
some of the concepts behind functional programming, offer a brief overview
of the Clojure language, and show how well it integrates with CFML to
provide large scale data processing, concurrency, and great performance.

More information on Clojure and Sean can be found at

[cfaussie] Re: Apache Flex Steering survey

2012-07-27 Thread Peter Robertson
Further to the initial invitation, Keith has provided the following
background regarding the steering committee for those interested.

"Someone asked a good question about who is organizing and for what
purpose, to be clear you can add this (or summary of) background if needed:

The Apache Flex Steering Survey is being organized and executed by members
of the 'Open Spoon Foundation' (www.spoon.as) and affiliates in support of
the Apache Flex Project. The Foundation (not-for-profit foundation) setup
by the Adobe community in 2011 to capture the collective experience of
those individuals implementing solutions on the Flex framework and to apply
that knowledge in a constructive manner through defect patching, feature
contribution and addressing aspects of the framework that limit
extensibility. Spoon's has a membership of several hundred and growing (a
number of who are Apache Flex committers and PMC members). The survey is
part of an effort to bring the community together, plan and organize
ourselves to move forward from the recent 4.8.0-incubating release. The
next 6 months will be an important stage for Apache Flex during which
Adobe's code/effort donations will be finalized and the first true 'new'
release will be undertaken. It is also a critical time in the market to
begin rebuilding interest and commitment in the technology. The chances of
success at this environment will be greatly improved by a coordinated
community effort towards the right objectives, which is what the steering
survey is going to contribute towards. The survey is live right now & will
remain open until August 21st, the data is meant to be used by Spoon and
the Apache Flex project. No commercial or personal information will be
shared publically, only aggregated results for the purpose of defining
objectives, features and functions as part of the roadmap
planning/organizing discussion.

[cfaussie] Apache Flex Steering survey

2012-07-26 Thread Peter Robertson
I've been asked to pass on this invitation by Keith Sutton from the Spoon
Project. If you're interested in the future of Apache Flex, please take
the time to let the steering committee know your priorities.

With the successful release of 4.8.0-incubating it would be timely to have
a discussion/consensus around the priorities going forward. We would
appreciate your support in distributing the link below to populations of
Flex developers you communicate with via the communities you manage. This
short survey will help guide and give context to this discussion. This
survey is 8 questions and should take less than 5 minutes to complete. Your
input is extremely important to the project - thank you for your time.

[cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers Meeting May17 2012: AngularJS

2012-05-13 Thread Peter Robertson
AngularJS is to JavaScript as Flex is to AS3 by Brendan Owen

For mobile web development I have shifted from AS3 to JavaScript
development. AngularJS seems a nice replacement for Flex. In the
presentation i will look at how some things done in Flex can be done
in AngularJS. Some of the concepts will include two way data bindings,
dependency injection, custom components, models and controllers.

>From angularjs.org
"HTML is great for declaring static documents, but it falters when we
try to use it for declaring dynamic views in web-applications.
AngularJS lets you extend HTML vocabulary for your application. The
resulting environment is extraordinarily expressive, readable, and
quick to develop."

[cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers Meeting April 19, 2012

2012-04-15 Thread Peter Robertson
Getting closure on Closures by Mark Mandel

It seems like all the cool kids are getting on the Closure bandwagon
these days. ColdFusion is no exception with Closures coming to
ColdFusion 10 in the near future, but what is the hype all about?

Are closures really the programming nirvana that we've all been
looking for, a well marketed snake oil of fancy programmatic syntax,
or something in between?

We'll look at exactly what Closures are, and how the can help you out
with your day to day programming tasks, as well as other real world
examples that will help show off the power of closures for those more
tricky problems.

Mark Mandel is a full time consultant and lead developer on several
open source projects, most notably ColdSpring, JavaLoader, Transfer
ORM and ColdDoc and has been has been working with ColdFusion for a
number of years, including at his very own dot com back in the late
90's.

Mark can often be found blogging at www.compoundtheory.com, which has
housed his thoughts on ColdFusion, Java and various aspects of
software development for several years. He can also be found as a
regular poster on ColdFusion mailing lists, causing havoc in the
#coldfusion channel on Dalnet irc network and podcasting on www.2ddu.com.

When he's not too busy writing open source software and consulting he
enjoys spending his extra time training martial arts in a wide variety
of disciplines and reading way too much fantasy literature.

[cfaussie] Fusebox framework reverts to open community

2012-04-07 Thread Peter Robertson
"After a long hiatus the Fusebox Framework, website, and copyright was
transferred from TeraTech to John Blayter. The overall goals of this
transfer was to place the future of the framework in the community. In
January 2012 the transfer was completed and the copyright was removed
from the source code." On the site they state that the plan is to
simply remove all copyright, the transfer having been an interim step.

This has happened rather quietly, I didn't know anything about it. It
seems the forums aren't operating (do they remain in TeraTech's
domain?), but there is a mailing list to subscribe to,
fusebox5-subscr...@yahoogroups.com. See http://www.fusebox.org/ for
further info.

I have to say it always seemed strange that TeraTech were able to
'own' the copyright (even though the code was open source), so I'm
really pleased to see that they've released it to the community. It
seems there are still enough of us using it to warrant further
development and they're claiming five active committers. Their
roadmap emphasizes community participation, so if you're still using
FuseBox or are potentially interested in the framework, I suggest you
subscribe to the list as a starting point.

Cheers

Re: [cfaussie] jQuery SmartWizard 2

2012-03-20 Thread Peter Robertson
Well, hadn't used this widget, so I put together a minimal fusebox5.5 and
can't find any problem, works a treat, and I like the wizard.
I'd need to see some code, or just guessing from here on.
I'd suggest you find the simplest setup that'll reproduce the issue and
share it on the list.

[cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers Meeting March 22, 2012

2012-03-20 Thread Peter Robertson
A/B Testing with Squabble

by Mark Mandel

You have two designs, one with a blue button, and one with a red
button, and you think that both designs could work on your a feature
of your application. The problem is, how do you know which one is
actually better? Which design is going to convert more users into
giving you their hard earned dollars through your application?

The fact of the matter is, you don't actually know. You can only make
a guestimate based on your experience as a web application developer,
and hope for the best. Unfortunately, real users can be a fickle
bunch that do unpredictable things, and it can be very hard to track
what the overall effect of all these changes to a site can make.

Squabble is a server side A/B testing framework for ColdFusion that
allows you to test multiple variations of site design and/or
functionality against your real users, in real time, and quantify the
results into statistics that can actually prove which combination of
variations results in your application getting more of the conversions
that you require. This gives you amazing freedom in being able to try
out new things on established sites, as you are able to track what
changes actually effect the behaviour of your real users, and then
continually improve upon them.

[cfaussie] Re: jQuery SmartWizard 2

2012-03-19 Thread Peter Robertson
Yep, using jQuery without issue.

What version of Fusebox?
Fusebox composes content and delivers it as index.cfm in your app root
(or another nominated single file).
This means that regardless of the path to the resources within your
app structure, the server sees everything as being index.cfm.
So check that references to css files, js libs etc all make this
assumption.

If this isn't the issue then I'd need to know more about your
particular app structure and how you're calling your resources.

2012-02-12 Thread Peter Robertson
StageWebView by Brendan Owen

Using StageWebView integrated into an AIR application and compiled as
a native App. StageWebView is the name of a class that displays the
native browser of the mobile device without leaving your native App.

Brendan is Digital Product Developer with Jacaranda, a division of
John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

Building Mobile Apps with Backbone

Backbone brings structure to your Javascript applications by supplying
models, events, collections and views that easily connect to your
existing APIs over a RESTful JSON interface.

See how you can develop native mobile apps with HTML5 using Backbone
and PhoneGap. We'll leverage the native device storage options
available through the PhoneGap Storage API to allow your app to work
when offline or only occasionally connected.

We'll also compare the approach taken by Backbone with other libraries
such as AngularJS highlighting the strengths of each platform.

Phil is an freelance developer who consults for a range of
organisations delivering Web, Desktop, Mobile and Cloud based
solutions. While often found using ColdFusion and Flash, more
recently he has developed a range of cross platform solutions using
HTML5 and PhoneGap, as well as native solutions using C++ and
Objective C. Phil advocates best practice approaches to development
methodologies, testing and deployment security.

[cfaussie] Melbourne Adobe Developers: MAD Un-Meeting Thurs 19 Jan 2011 (drinks / food)

2012-01-17 Thread Peter Robertson
Thanks to Dennis Clark's recent post, we are going to get together for
a drink and a feed.
As there is no formal presentation, this won't be funded, so we'll
each be paying our own way.

Let's meet for a drink (alcohol not compulsory Dale, please come
anyway), and then move straight on to dinner.

DRINKS 6:00 PM
The Carlton, www.thecarlton.com.au
193 Bourke St (One block up from CogState)
Melbourne, VIC, 3000

DINNER 7:00 PM
Venue TBC, (I'll tweet the location as soon as it's fixed, (http://
www.twitter.com/Peter_Robertson) )

If you can post back here to let us know if you're coming, then we'll
get some idea of numbers when choosing a dinner venue.

Look forward to seeing you all.

[cfaussie] Re: MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers: No meeting for Jan 2012

2012-01-16 Thread Peter Robertson
Hi Dennis

I'd be happy to meet for a drink on Thursday evening.
If you're in the CBD, then a suitable venue would be:

Date: Thursday 16 Dec 2011
Time: 6:00 PM
Location:
Top floor
The Carlton, www.thecarlton.com.au
193 Burke St (One block up from CogState)
Melbourne, VIC, 3000

Any other starters?

[cfaussie] MAD Xmas gathering: Software Prize Winner.

2011-12-15 Thread Peter Robertson

And, the winner was, Paul Kukiel!

Congratulations Paul, please contact me off-list with the following
information:
- The email you wish Adobe to send you your download details to,
- The platform you will install on,
- The product you would like.

Conditions:
- Download only, boxed product will not be shipped,
- No upgrades,
- No online services,
- Value up to USD $2,100

2011-12-15 Thread Peter Robertson
You were missed Mr Buzzy, do doubt.

The evening was lightly attended but in other respects very
enjoyable.

First week of Jan is probably unlikely but by all means propose it to
the list.
I am usually available for a feed and a drink in good company.
How's your dog?

I also had a dog crisis, we must compare notes :)

[cfaussie] Re: ColdFusion Builder Opinions

2011-11-23 Thread Peter Robertson
So, you go into Search / Find in Files (top menu), create and select a
Working Set to point to a path, provide a string, hit search, and then
under the search tab in the lower right panel, you get a tree
structure with a drillable list of hits. You double click on a hit
and it opens the file, locates the corresponding location in the file
and highlights the hit. I don't find it that different to Homsite
from what I can remember. Also, up and down arrows in the top of the
search panel position the cursor on prev/next hit within the file and
then across files.

I think it's all right.

We had been going to try to piggy-back MAD on CFObjective this year
but it proved a bit difficult, so instead we're moving to the Thursday
following (the 24th) and will be doing a re-cap of CFObjective
highlights and take-aways from those of us attending.

If you've looked at the program (http://cfobjective.com.au/program)
you'll see that it's both rich and varied, so I expect we'll have lots
to share with you.

Gavin Baumanis, Phil Haeusler and (of course) Mark Mandel are
attending and speaking and I am also attending so we'll be going

Unit Testing with MX Unit and Continuous Integration with ANT and
Jenkins CI: Gavin Baumanis

Kent Beck said;
“Test driven development is a way of managing fear during
programming.”

He goes on to say that;
• “Fear makes you tentative,
• Fear makes you want to communicate less,
• Fear makes you shy away from feedback.“

Test Driven Development (TDD) allows us take steps towards controlling
of all of these things.

Gavin will show the pros and cons of Unit testing - and why he thinks
you simply must write tests for your code.

MX Unit is a ColdFusion port of the popular java testing framework,
jUnit.
Gavin will show you how to;
* write
* run your unit tests

He'll also go into how to integrate your testing suite with ANT and
the Jenkins CI platform to automate the testing of your code.
So you'll be able to;
* run your tests on command
* run your tests every time you commit new code to your version
control system

and lastly,
* deploy your tested code to a server.

[cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers meeting for Thursday 18 August 2011. COLDSPRING

2011-08-14 Thread Peter Robertson
This month's presentation is from Mark Mandel.

ColdSpring 2.0 Alpha 1 - What's New and Improved?

ColdSpring 2.0, codenamed Narwhal, has been in development for over a
year now, with an array of new and improved features being brewed in
the background.
With the release of Alpha 1 of this framework, these features have
become available to developers to take advantage of.
This presentation will give you an overview and examples of each of
the major new features of ColdSpring 2, including enhanced dependency
injection, custom namespaces, ORM integration and AOP enhancements
and much more.

Date: Thursday 18 August 2011
Time: 6:30 PM
Location:
CogState
Level 2
255 Bourke Street
Melbourne, VIC, 3000

A note on the door will provide a number to ring for access.
RSVP: Please reply to this post if you are planning to attend so we

[cfaussie] MAD: Software draw for first half of 2011

2011-07-26 Thread Peter Robertson
And the winner is, Chong!

I didn't get time to prepare the draw for our last meeting, so I did
the next best thing and got my local barman to perform the draw for me
(see the pic at http://tinyurl.com/3fqq8ad ).

The draw is based on attendances; one chance per attendance and an
additional chance for every presentation. Chong has been fairly
regular this year, so congratulations, he has won the software prize
which can be of value of up to USD$2,100.

Please select your prize Chong and send me the following information:

Product (must be standard, full product, not upgrade, not an online
service).
Platform (Mac / PC).
Full Name for license.
Email address that you want registered with the product.
Adobe will contact you with details on how you can redeem your prize.

[cfaussie] Melbourne Adobe Developers next meeting, 21st July 2011, presentation details

2011-07-17 Thread Peter Robertson
Here are the full details for this Thursday's presentation.
*** Remember, please RSVP if you're attending so that we can arrange
catering. ***

Presentation 1: Ayudh Nagara

Topic: Web Widgets
* What, Why, How?
* The widget business model
* Basic framework and tools
* Getting around the AJAX "same origin" rule
* Demo

Ayudh Nagara is co-founder and director of Xilo Online, a web and
mobile payment gateway provider. He has been using ColdFusion since
Version 2, and ColdFusion remains the primary application server for
this business, as well as other web application projects he has worked
on over the years.

Prior to that, Ayudh worked for IBM for over 25 years in a number of
technical, sales and management roles.

Ayudh's current area of interest and continued learning is in the fast
growing area of rich UI's and front-end web application development
covering AJAX, JSON, jQuery, DHTML, CSS and Javascript.

Presentation 2: Phil Haeusler

Topic: Multi-Device Mobile Development

See how simple it is to use Flash Builder to build apps for Apple,
Android and Blackberry Playbook devices. Using the Flex Mobile
components and Adobe AIR, we'll cover the work flow of developing a
multi-device app from the setting up of an empty project to deploying
the app on multiple-devices and publishing to the Apple, Android and
Blackberry online stores.

And to prove that it's not all smoke and mirrors, we'll build a social
app that can be deployed to mobile devices at the user group.

Phil is an independent software consultant who codes for food. Often
found using ColdFusion, Flex and the greater Adobe product stack, Phil
advocates best practice approaches to development methodologies,
testing and deployment security. He is a long time RocketBoots partner
and CodeWar quizmaster.

[cfaussie] Re: CS4 apps and WIndows 7 64 Bit

2011-06-22 Thread Peter Robertson
Hi Mike

I have run CS4 on Win7 32 and am now running CS5 on Win7 32 and CS5.5
on Win7 64. The limitations for CS5+ with 32bit are Premier and After
Effects, which require 64 bit. The CS5+ dists include older versions
of these two for people who don't want to or can't go 64 bit. From
Dale's earlier response I wouldn't suppose you'll have issues on Win 7
with CS4.

[cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers meeting details for Thursday 23 June 2011

2011-06-20 Thread Peter Robertson
Presentation 1: Steve Onnis

Topic: Using CFPROPERTY and ORM to create forms and manage data

Gone are the days of tediously creating form after form to manage data
in your applications.

This presentation will illustrate how to use ColdFusion Components
(CFC’s), the CFPROPERTY, CFC Meta Information and ColdFusion ORM to
create simple and complex forms with not much code but lots of
flexibility. The process can be used to create “crud” data
manipulation forms or be fully integrated into real world application.

Steve is manager or our Melbourne CFUG and long-time practitioner in
the CF space. He provides web application development services and
hosting through his Inevative and NovaHost companies.

Presentation 2: Mark Mandel

Topic: Bringing the cf.Objective() Keynote to you!

Outlining and discussing what is going to be new and improved in the
next version of ColdFusion, not only will we touch on what has been
publicly announced as new features, but also talk about possible
applications for each of them.

Come get your ColdFusion on!

Mark Mandel is a full time consultant and lead developer on several
open source projects, most notably ColdSpring, JavaLoader, Transfer
ORM and ColdDoc and has been working with ColdFusion for a number of
years, including at his very own dot com back in the late 90's. Mark
can often be found blogging at www.compoundtheory.com, which has

software development for several years. He can also be found as a

[cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers meeting for Thursday 19 May 2011

2011-05-15 Thread Peter Robertson
Join us for two very interesting presentations, covering both the code
and media sides of life in the Adobe sphere.

Presentation 1: Andrew Spaulding, Ooyala

Media management, content distribution, and ultimately how to make
money from video! In this session Andrew Spaulding from Ooyala will
introduce Backlot - Ooyala's media technology platform. Andrew will
discuss the technologies used to build Ooyala's video offering, and
how Adobe's Flash Platform technologies play a major role in content
delivery and user experience

Andrew Spaulding is a Senior Solutions Architect for Ooyala Australia
and New Zealand. He has extensive knowledge of the Adobe Flash
Platform with a focus on Rich Internet Applications and media delivery
to every screen and platform imaginable. Prior to joining Ooyala
Andrew spent the previous 5 years working for Macromedia/Adobe, and is
a certified Adobe Flex Instructor. With a passion for ActionScript and
Flash development he runs a blog over at www.flexdaddy.com and has
presented at various industry conferences including Adobe's MAX
conferences, WebDU, cf.Objective, and other local events.

Presentation 2: Brendan Owen, Automatic code generation

I was frustrated with the automatic code generated from Flash Builder.
During my holidays I decided build my own program to help generate
code from a project template and hierarchy file (xml). I use the
program to generate MXML, AS3, PHP and SQL, but in theory this could
be used to generate any text based files. Some of the issues I tried
to address with my code generation program were:

1) The templates could be directly complied into a standalone working
system.
2) The program could be applied to any text based source code.
3) You had freedom to structure your project’s code to suit your
needs.

I am after some feedback on this program and if it would be a useful
tool to develop further.

I am currently working for Jacaranda as a digital content developer.
My work usually switches between two types of development. Writing
digital learning objects in flash for http://www.jacplus.com.au/ and
building online systems using Flex, PHP and MySQL for internal company
use.

[cfaussie] First Melbourne Adobe Developers meeting. Comments and feedback please.

2011-05-03 Thread Peter Robertson
Last Thursday we held the first combined ColdFusion / Flex meeting
here in Melbourne, attended by 11 people.

Speakers were Phil Haeusler and Mark Mandel. For details see the
announcement at MAD, Adobe Groups http://bit.ly/fIYesX .

There was general approval of the new format and a number of topic
areas for future meetings were proposed after the presentations. We
clarified that any topic of interest to developers working under the
general Adobe banner would be of interest to this group, and a
preliminary list was taken. If you're in the Melbourne area, and
develop in ColdFusion, Flex or AS3 you may well be interested in
joining us on the third Thursday of each month. Details are At MAD,
http://mad.groups.adobe.com/. Our aim is to provide two 20 to 30
minute presentations each evening plus general discussion and pizza.

Here are some of the topics of interest raised for future meetings.
Please indicate your interest and by all means suggest other topics.
(We're also looking for presenters, please get in touch if you'd like
to present some time this year.)

- CSS
- HTML5
- Databases
  - No SQL
  - Tuning
- Mobile
- Cloud Services
- Version Control
- SOLR
- Security
- Testing
- .. and of course ColdFusion, Flex, AS.

If you have any questions or would like to present, please contact us.

[cfaussie] MAD! Melbourne Adobe Developers meeting for Thursday 28 April 2011

2011-04-26 Thread Peter Robertson
This will be our first meeting under the new format. In case you
missed the lead-up discussions, we have combined the ColdFusion User
Group and Melbourne Flex User Group to reflect the on-going
convergence of interest among the two communities. Going forward we
will be open to presentations on any of Adobe's technologies relevant
to developers, remaining primarily focussed on ColdFusion, Flex/AS3.

Presentation 1. Phil Haeusler

Watch how you can integrate server-side geolocation into your forms.
Prefill your Country field to save your customers the hassle of
needing to scroll through the official list of the 248 countries. You
can even go further and prefill State, Suburb and Postcode to further
improve their experience. Server-side geolocation even allows you to
return location-aware results - learn how search results can be
tailored to the end-user's location to provide them with top results
that are more likely appropriate to them. Demonstrations will
integrate GeoIP with ColdFusion and a Flex front end.

Phil is a long-time ColdFusion developer and administrator and has a
deep understanding of how ColdFusion does what it does. He consults to
many varied organisations around ColdFusion, Flex and the larger Adobe
product stack and advocates best practice approaches to development
methodologies, testing and deployment security. He is a long time
RocketBoots partner and CodeWar quizmaster.

Presentation 2. Mark Mandel

Develop, test, and deploy Adobe® ColdFusion® applications faster than
ever with new features in Adobe ColdFusion Builder™ 2 software that
improve productivity, control, and extensibility. Work more
efficiently with enhanced coding tools, advanced code refactoring,
code formatting, custom keyboard shortcuts, and more. Take advantage
of more robust extensibility with new extensible code insight and
ColdFusion framework support. Some features of CF10 will also be
revealed at the end of this presentation.

Mark Mandel is a full time consultant and lead developer on several
open source projects, most notably ColdSpring, JavaLoader, Transfer
ORM and ColdDoc and has been working with ColdFusion for a number of
years, including at his very own dot com back in the late 90's.

[cfaussie] Melbourne Adobe Developers (MAD, formerly Melbourne CFUG

2011-04-18 Thread Peter Robertson
Hi to all Melbourne Adobe Developers.

As previously announced, we have combined CFUG (ColdFusion User Group)
and MFUG (Melbourne Flex User Group) to form MAD.
We have been trying to put together an event for this month, but with
Easter and people's involvement in WebDU, it's been a bit difficult,
so clearly, we won't be meeting on the normal third Thursday (21st) of
this month.
We're still hoping to have an event for next week, (28th) and will
post as soon as I have news one way or the other.

Thank you all for your patience.

[cfaussie] Melbourne Cold Fusion User Group and Melbourne Flex User Group are merging. No meeting this month. New group = MAD, Melbourne Adobe Developers.

2011-03-16 Thread Peter Robertson
Hi to all Melbourne Adobe Developers!

Sorry for the late advice, but I'm afraid we won't be having a meeting
this month.

Subsequent to the last CFUG, we've been busy re-shaping the usergroups
for Melbourne developers who use Adobe tooling and technologies.
Given attendances for both CFUG and MFUG meetings, we've decided to
amalgamate the two groups.
The new group will be called MAD, Melbourne Adobe Developers.

The primary focus will be, of course, ColdFusion and Flex, but we're
open to any topic of concern to web developers using the Adobe stack,
including pure ActionScript, Javascript, CSS, etc, as well as more
general topics like OOP, testing, version control and so on. We'll
also be changing the format, with meetings having two presentations of
between 20 and 30 minutes each.

The format will be:
- 6:30 - 7:00 PM General chat while people arrive.
- 7:00 - 7:30 PM First presentation
- 7:30 - 8:00 PM Pizza & discussion
- 8:30 - 9:00 PM Second presentation
- 9:00 - 9:10 PM Closing comments, general announcements, etc.
- 9:10 - ?? Informal chat for those wishing to stay on.

We'll be encouraging presenters to focus on demonstrations of what can
be done with, and how to approach, the various tools and technologies
available, rather than deep-diving into the detail. This is of
course a general guideline and there will no doubt be cases where the
detailed drill on a specific topic will be warranted.

The Manager of the new group will be Steve Onnis. The Co-manager will
be Peter Robertson. Dale Fraser has generously offered to continue to
make CogState's boardroom available and to help out generally.

We will be announcing events and general business on CFAussie and
http://mad.groups.adobe.com.
Please let us know your thoughts on what is proposed here and let us
have any questions.
We'll be running the new group in the CFUG slot of third Thursday of
each month, so our next meeting will be Thursday 21 April.

[cfaussie] Recap: CFUG / MFUG Melbourne December 2010: Combined CF/Flex UG Xmas Dinner

2010-12-18 Thread Peter Robertson
Thanks to all who attended last Thursday, from where I sat people
seemed to be enjoying themselves and lots of good tech discussion (and
general gossip) ensued.

As promised, we raffled the six-monthly software prize, taking into
account attendances at the CFUGs for the second half of the year. You
got your name on a ticket for the draw for each time you attended.
We'll be continuing this practice in the coming year, with the
additional refinement that presenters will get a bonus entry!

The lucky winner from the CFUG for this year was Steve Armstrong.
Congratulations Steve! You now need to contact me offline straight
away so that I can arrange for Adobe to send you your prize. (peter
at p-robertson dot com should do it). This needs to be finalized
before the end of the month. Go to the Adobe store and select a full-
license product costing up to US$2,100. It must be a discreet
product, not an online service, nor an upgrade or anything like that.
You will be getting a license and download instructions, (not a
physical box product). Send me the details, along with the email
address that you'd like Adobe to use, and your hardware platform (Mac
or PC). You might like to let the list know what you choose?

Congratulations also to Mr Buzzy and Phil Haeusler, each proud winners
of Adobe drink containers. I'll deliver these to you at our next
CFUG.

So, there's a moral here, participate in your local UG and you stand
to be rewarded! The more you participate, the better your chances.

Also, we'd really, really like your input for what to do in the new
year. Let us know your comments on format, topics, etc. We need to
get attendances up, especially if we want to draw presenters from out
of town.

Best wishes to all for the holiday season

[cfaussie] CFUG Melbourne October 2010: ColdFusion i/o

2010-10-18 Thread Peter Robertson
This month, we're trying something a little different, with three
presenters rather than the usual one.

The topic is ColdFusion i/o, or "Getting In and Out of ColdFusion",
ie, communicating with other environments from the ColdFusion Server.

I asked for speakers who could deliver 30 to 45 minutes on a
technology of their choice:

Robin Hilliard

Stop that Response! Getting Pushy with ColdFusion and Data Services.
When the closing html tag of your HTTP response leaves the data centre
you'd normally have no chance of reaching out from your server code to
change the contents of the resulting page in the browser. But with a
nifty, easy to use custom tag developed by RocketBoots... you can.

Robin is Chief Technology Officer and founder of Rocket Boots.
He is an experienced software architect, with a particular focus on
Adobe's Flash platform.

Steve Onnis

Gateway services and connecting to the jabber IM XMPP gateway and
connecting to an XMPP IM gateway through JAVA including logging in,
sending messages and implementing long polling through AJAX

Steve is manager or our Melbourne CFUG and long-time practitioner in
the CF space.
He provides web application development services and hosting through
his Inevative and NovaHost companies.
_

Phil Haeusler
Passing strongly typed data through remoting and webservices

Phil is a long-time ColdFusion developer and administrator and has a
deep understanding of how ColdFusion does what it does. He is a long
time RocketBoots partner and CodeWar quiz-master.

Hi Matthew

Yes, I myself will be doing Kai's Flex workshop and expect to be brain dead,
but it would still be great to get a well-known name to talk to us if Code
Wars doesn't go ahead and not everyone will be doing the workshops.

Just as long as nobody expects too much from me on the night :)

[cfaussie] CFUG Melbourne November and December

2010-10-12 Thread Peter Robertson
November:

As you will all be aware, next month is CFObjective.
(cfobjective.com.au)

Hopefully most of the Melbourne CFUG folk will be attending, and in
any case the normal CFUG evening would fall on Day 1 of the event, so
we will be moving the CFUG to Wed 17 November, to coincide with
CFObjective Day 0. Phil Haeusler and Rocket Boots are setting up a
CodeWars event for the Wednesday. If this goes ahead, as seems
likely, then we're suggesting that we roll CFUG into that event.

For those unfamiliar with Code Wars, go to the Rocket Boots blog and
drill on the Code War link at the top.
http://www.rocketboots.com.au/blog/index.cfm

If, for any reason Code Wars or a similar Day 0 event isn't held, then
we'll hold the CFUG as normal, but on the Wed evening, and will try to
get one or two of the out-of-town folk to do a presentation.

December:

As people are busy and starting to leave town by about mid December,
we'll be organising a dinner for those of us left. Given the
distractions around CFObjective in November, we'll also be drawing the
software prize at the dinner in December. Your name will be entered
in the draw once for each attendance at the CFUG from July, so the
more times you attended, the better your chances. We won't be
counting attendance at CodeWars, (too hard), nor attendance at the
dinner. If you are not at the dinner and your name is drawn, you will
still be eligible, and we will contact you with the details of your
prize.

By all means send us any feedback on this year's CFUG Melbourne. Let
us know what you liked, what you didn't and what you'd like to see
next year.

Many thanks

[cfaussie] CFUG Melbourne 21 October 2010: A call for presenters.

2010-10-12 Thread Peter Robertson
CFUG Melbourne is next week, Thursday 21 October, full details will be
posted soon.

For something different, I'm trying to put together an evening with
two or three presenters on the same theme, rather than the normal
single-presenter session.
The theme is CF Server talking to the World, by which I mean ways that
CF Server can be utilised to communicate with, consume and feed non-CF
servers/services/gateways etc.
So far I have one starter on the topic of passing strongly typed data
through Remoting, and a 'maybe' for jabber IM gateway, to be
confirmed (or not) tomorrow.

If you're in or around Melbourne Thursday of next week, do you have a
favourite/interesting/useful CF i/o technology you'd like to talk
about and demo?

Please all put the date in your diaries and let me know asap if you're
up for a 30 to 45 minute presentation.
I'll post full details as soon as they're available.

Many thanks

[cfaussie] Re: CF Contractor Rates

2010-09-14 Thread Peter Robertson
In my experience, you're hard-pressed to go beyond the $65 to $85 per
hour if what you're doing is described as 'CF Development'. While you
may in fact wind up assisting in analysis, design, strategy and all
the rest of it, when it comes to getting paid, if you're in this
space, you're considered a 'coder'. The only place I make really good
bucks is in the consulting area, often right away from the technology
in such things as business process analysis and design, requirements
docs, etc. Overall, I think the agencies have made us into a
commodity, by offering some kind of standardised packaging to the
market and then competing with each other on price to get the
business.

Well, I guess you're looking from the other side Dale, so this won't
be all bad news to you?

Re: [cfaussie] groups.adobe authentication issues?

2010-07-16 Thread Peter Robertson
Yeah Dale, cookies enabled, had tested with Google Chrome and Firefox, then
went and tried IE and it worked. However, went back to Chrome and now it
works in Chrome as well, so coincidence that it decided to work just then
with IE.
.

Now, some time later, still holding session in Chrome, no problem.

I have emailed to Ray, he said he'd heard of occasional problems of this
nature and suspected people getting bounced around in the cluster losing
session or something. So, if anyone has had problems, even occasionally,
probably worth letting Ray know. It's a bugger when you've put something
up, see a problem, and can't get back in to correct.

I've had a lot of trouble staying in long enough to get any editing

sometimes appears to log me in, but then drops me in a very short
time.

[cfaussie] CFUG Melbourne July: Re-cap

2010-07-15 Thread Peter Robertson
Thanks to all who attended our meeting last night and especially to
Mark Mandel for his excellent presentation on OOP.  Thanks also to
Steve Onnis for organising food & drinks and to Dale & CogState for
the excellent venue.

Turnout was good, 14. The format was a little different with Mark
using a whiteboard instead of projector, and as was hoped, there was a
lot of participation.

I've summarised in more detail at
http://melbcfug.groups.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=post.display&postid=28883
and have started the attendance role there, so please check in to make
sure I got your name. (Be sure to let me know if I missed you, or
you'll reduce your chances of winning the software prize in November).

Also, anyone interested in pursuing the book discount offer, please
contact me off-list.
