My first visit to these series of ponds in Broomfield around midday today
revealed some goodies . Most of the action at this time was at the Anthem Ranch
ponds where in a 45 minute span we had 2 1st cycle Thayers , 1 1st cycle
Glaucous ( very white ) , 1 adult Lesser Black-

The two Harris Sparrows ( adult male , imm ) previously reported by Mike
H were seen again again this afternoon at the boat launch parking lot , Bear
Creek Lake Park , Jefferson County. Associating with American Tree Sparrows ,
they were sometimes difficult to locate staying

Joe Roller asked me to post that as of 9:15 AM , no Snowy Owl has been
seen by the 30 + anxious birders at Aurora Reservoir .

As Joe Roller mentioned both the Red-throated Loon and the 3
juvenile /female type Surf Scoters were visible from either the west or east
side
of Cherry Creek SP until I left at 3:30 PM this afternoon. I had quite
good looks at the RTLO and to my eyes looked to be
CO borders :
Antero , Spinney Mountain and Eleven mile reservoir were quiet today , no
loons , no scoters. highlight was a juvenile American Golden Plover in the
SW corner of Antero.

A happy group of birders from Aiken Audubon got some great views and
photographs of an adult Le Conte's Sparrow at Chico Basin Ranch ( fee area )
this morning. It was located in the same wet sedge meadow below the Upper
Twin Ponds dam wall that Bill Maynard had his

the Springs found a Yellow-throated Warbler in the HQ willow/cotton wood

The White-eyed Vireo was singing again this morning at Palmer
Lake in Monument Creek . It has moved about a 100 yards downstream from its
location last week , about 25 yards downstream of the bridge at the
intersection of Walnut Ave and Glen Ave . Behavior

Between 8:30 and 9:30 AM our group of 4 birders were rewarded with 4
fly byes and one close perched view of the female type Least Bittern at
Holcim Marsh Wetlands , Fremont County from the south trail. Also of note was
a Peregrine Falcon , a brown Willow Flycatcher and

There was a White-eyed Vireo singing close to the Palmer Lake
Reservoir Trail Head parking lot this morning. It was seen ( and photographed
) along Monument Creek in dense willow carr and behavior was very skulking

Interesting to read the comments on Cassin's Sparrows . What a
difference a little rain makes. I did an atlas block in Eastern El Paso this
morning and must have had a minimum of 50 Cassin's singing , carrying food etc
etc . Just two weeks ago there were virtually none

traditionally holds Chestnut-collared Longspur , SE quadrant of the
intersection of Weld CR 114 and US 85 . You now need to OBTAIN PERMISSION

) , Otero County were treated to views of a Black Rail ( yes in broad daylight

We have been given clearance to carryout breeding bird surveys at
the Pinon Canyon Maneuver ( note the spelling ) Site ( PCMS ) during the
week June 13 thru 17 . This site has 5 priority atlas blocks with no data

A late afternoon fruitless search for the Prothonotory Warbler around
the banding station ( El Paso ) at Chico Basin Ranch added a Chestnut

The Denver Audubon Group relocated the ( banded ) Blue-winged
Warbler this afternoon at the banding station area , Chico Basin Ranch ( fee
area
) , El Paso County . Feeding high up in cottonwood trees on insects
attracted to the catkins. Interestingly this male was

Chico Basin Ranch ( fee area ) had just a few migrants today :
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at the Casita and Rose , Gray Flycatcher at the Casita ,
Orange-crowned Warbler at Holmes , 10 to 15 Myrtle and Audubon Warblers at
Homes , Casita and HQ , Hermit Thrush at Holmes ,

As reported earlier , the DFO trip today found a Pine Warbler (
probably an immature male ) along the Bluff Trail access from Sells Lake trail
head off Street 9 , Canyon City this morning . The bird was observed in a
mixed flock of chickadees , siskins , finches and
cobirders :
Two Glaucous Gulls ( 1 st cycle ) , Thayer's Gull ( 1 st cycle ) and
Red-necked Grebe continue at Chatfield SP this morning seen in both counties
over a period of an hour. Did not locate the Long-tailed Duck.

Following up on Bill M's note on Wrens , I had a definite Winter
Wren ( plumage , voice ) at Fountain Creek late this afternoon located in the
dry irrigation ditch 25 yards south of the gazebo , same general area as
the immature Harris Sparrow . I subsequently ran into

We re found two adult male Williamson's Sapsuckers at Rouse Park and
an adult female Williamson's Sapsucker at the Abbey today. Tunnel Drive
was quiet with Sharp-shinned Hawk and Bushtits of note.
At Bush Hollow SWA no Pacific Loon , Common Goldeneye , Red-breasted
Cobirders :
Mid morning there was an immature/female Black Scoter at Big Johnson
Reservoir , El Paso County plus a variety of waterfowl including Canvasback
, Ring-necked Duck , Common Goldeneye . Then news of the Ross's Gull came
through and I headed north.

There was an immature ( HY ) Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at Pueblo City
Park in the north east corner to east of the duck pond working both pines
and hackberry trees this morning.This appears to be a different bird to the
one reported by Brandon a couple of weeks ago .

The adult Red-necked Grebe was present this afternoon at Cherry Creek
SP amongst the 100 + Western Grebes in the NE corner by the dam wall .
Also a juvenile Sabine's Gull in the SE corner. No scoters or loons however
which is what I was hoping for.

Highlights today were Black-bellied Plover at HQ Pond and Nashville
Warbler ( caught and banded ) at Holmes . Otherwise migrants were typical :

The Wood Thrush was still around HQ willows this morning and the
first year male American Redstart was relocated at Rose as well. Numbers of
waterfowl , swallows and shorebirds were well down from the weekend. A
Clark's Grebe and an adult Black-crowned Night Heron were

A Broad-winged Hawk flew over the Woodmen Rd P R lot this afternoon
( Colorado Springs ) as the remnants of the Aiken Audubon trip
participants returning from Chico Basin Ranch collected their parked vehicles.

After initially misIDing as an immature Cooper's Hawk , I finally got
confirmatory photo's of an immature ( 2 cnd year ) Northern Goshawk in my
yard in Monument this afternoon. It has been terrorizing the squirrel
population as well as Black-billed Magpies .

workshop at Zapata Ranch , San Luis Valley , to be held March 7-11 , just in
advance of the Monte Vista Crane Festival , March 12-14. Zapata Ranch is a

Pine Warbler this morning in the NE corner of Pueblo City Park loosely
associating with Brown Creeper and Red-breasted Nuthatches. It took us over 2
hours to find her , the giveaway being the hard chip

The immature Red-shouldered Hawk was again seen today by several
birders , including Rick A , Sally , Jeannie M and Cecile M from the south
trail at Kodak SWA , Weld Cty access from the unpaved lot . Seen in flight and
perched in cottonwoods showing all field marks.

Returning home from the Penrose CBC today , the Long-tailed Ducks (
pair ) and male Barrow's Goldeneye seen yesterday were observed again from
the Sailboard viewpoint around the dam wall this afternoon.

While searching in vain for the Jaeger this morning at Chatfield , I
did find a first winter Red-throated Loon in the eastern part of the
reservoir , visible from the sand spit. Other birds of note Common Loon ,

I found a juvenile Neotropic Comorant at Big Johnson reservoir this
afternoon. It was visible from the parking lot close to the dam wall
looking north and was associating with a juvenile Double-crested Comorant
allowing excellent comparison showing differences in size ,

Eleven Mile SP held an immature Surf Scoter this morning ( eastern end
) , Spinney Mtn SP not much and Antero SP adult Sabine Gull , 1 st cycle
Thayer's Gull , jaeger sp. Never got a good enough look for positive ID on

Atlasers at the Nature Conservancy , Steel Forks Ranch , a.k.a . Brett

A party of atlasers had a great day at the Nature Conservancy property
at Steel's Fork Ranch ( aka Brett Gray Ranch ) guided by Senior

??? Migration seems to have ended at Chico . Like the past two days new
arrivals have been few and far between. A female Blackpoll at Rose (? first
seen by Scott Schaum ) , a female Hooded Warbler at HQ , and a Dusky and Willow
Flycatcher around Holmes was about it.

? A family group of 6 White-winged Crossbills ( 2 adult males , 2 adult
females and?2 immatures? ) were seen around the Visitors Center on the Grand
Mesa , Delta County . They were associating with Red Crossbills ( probably type

The Birding and Heritage birding tour around Bent's Old Fort , Otero
County this morning had several interesting migrants including Baltimore
Oriole ( male ) , American Redstart ( f ) , Rose-breasted Grosbeak ( f ) ,
Western Tanager ( pair ) and possible breeders ,
Cobirders :
Very quiet at the banding station today , no banders present , just a
single Hermit Thrush , Ruby-crowned Kinglet , and Yellow-rumped Warbler.
At Rose Pond however there was an immature Harris's Sparrow associating
with White-crown's in the very short willows along the

There were 8 Golden-crowned Kinglets ( FOS ) ,all but one males ,
feeding in willow carr along Monument Creek , Glen Park , Palmer Lake this
afternoon. Other typical foothill species included Bushtits , Western Scrub
Jays ,
Blue Jays , Chickadees , Song Sparrows , Pygmy
