Montgomery County Public Library has free movie downloads if your
friend has access to a library card from there. Downloads are good
for 7 day then they self delete. Limit of 10 a week. Cannot burn
them to DVD however. Just re-download. Since they are always
available there is really no need to burn this selection. It is a
Windows only service.

it doesn't backup any programs that I see (although I don't know this).
If imaging is different, how is that best done? I have no desire to keep

all. If imaging solves this problem, then that's great.

Thanks for the advice on the second harddrive, I'll go that route.

Monumental waste of time keeping track of the programs you
installed. You should have the programs you USE on your C partition
and that should be imaged daily.

It looks like I'll have to reinstall my Windows XP operating system in
the near future. Is there a simple program that can document and print
out a copy of all the existing programs I currently have on the
computer? I want to keep track of the ones I have added without having
 to write down each one.

Second, any suggestions for the best way to backup files in preparation
for the reinstall? I tried backing up to a 160GB Seagate external drive
but it stopped at 4GB, which apparently is the limit for FAT32. One
thought is to buy a second internal harddrive and just copy everything
over to it and then after reinstall, use the second hard drive as
permanent data storage, with the primary drive holding the operating
system. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I'm not sure but I think the Google rules that you refer to pertain

[CGUYS] Laser printer

2008-03-23 Thread Eugene V Martin

I'd appreciate some advice:

I want to buy a relatively inexpensive, monochrome laser printer for
very light duty in a home office with three Macs networked via a
router and an Airport Extreme (g). Duplex capability is highly
desirable but not strictly necessary (e.g. I can't pay too much extra
for it), and a small footprint is greatly desirable.

I find it hard to choose from all the options available online, plus I
have some specific questions:

1) All things being equal, what's the best way to network a printer:
ethernet to the router, USB to the Airport, or either to the
physically closest Mac (an iMac in my case)?

2) Does the printer language emulation matter for any reason as long
as the printer is Mac 10.5 compatible? (I'm currently using an Apple
Laserwriter Select 360 that supports PostScript level 2, but other
makers seem to have brand-specific languages.)

3) Any thoughts about the wisdom or not of buying used?

TIA

For some odd reason i want to know if the cores show up as seperate
cpu's in taskmanager (i assume vista has a taskmanager)

All the dual-core chips I've used have.

I've bought many a system from there. Both servers and laptops; only one
problem and the warranty took care of that PDQ. I recommend it to anyone.

What do folks think of the above processor ?(what os are you using?)

The Core 2 Duos are very nice CPUs. Even though I prefer AMD chips, these
outperform the AMDs.

Try Brothers HL-2170W wireless laser networking printer.

It has both Windows and Mac drivers. Retail is $149.00

ethernet to the router, USB to the Airport, or either to the

2) Does the printer language emulation matter for any reason as long
as the printer is Mac 10.5 compatible? (I'm currently using an Apple
Laserwriter Select 360 that supports PostScript level 2, but other
makers seem to have brand-specific languages.)

3) Any thoughts about the wisdom or not of buying used?

Re: [CGUYS] Intel Core Duo Conroe 6550

2008-03-23 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

Essentially it the ability to put two cores (CPU's) onto one CPU.

This gives it the ability to split tasks if needed (two separate
functioning processes)

It is not as good as two computers for one price, but it does allow
you to have to separate processes running at the same time and not
bog down the CPU.

I'd recommend a Brother printer. They are relatively inexpensive and
I've had good luck with them. They have been very easy to use with my
Macs. The MSRP of HL-2070N is $129.99, but I've seen them on sale for
$99. While I do not have my Brother printer networked, a friend of mine
bought the HL-2070N and networked it at his house and is very happy with it.

This seems to have replaced the 2070N. They are pretty good printers
and so far reliable.

HP's have been great too, but their entry level networked printer is
much higher.

For the price you cant really go wrong.
