See the URL. If one connects a digital camera from Kodak, the DC2XX kernel
module is loaded and this blocks the access via GPhoto2. One has always to
rmmod the module manually to be able to access the camera and newbies do not
know this and think their camera is not supported.

The user who reported the problem in the MandrakeClub probably uses Mandrake
9.1, but it is possible that the bug still persists in 9.2. I cannot test as I
do not have a Kodak camera and the problem does not appear with my Olympus
C-3000Z and Canon Digital IXUS 400. If the bug is already fixed, simply mark it
as fixed, if another package is responsable please change it.

PS.
about the buggy OOo RC4 ... if IRC there are only two minor
patches that got added before RC5 / Final, so it shouldn't
be a problem ;-)

No need to try the other ones ;-)

It's to _way_ to late for default kernel that ships with 9.2,
as the isos are already sent, and probably half way through the
manufacturing process my now...
But Juan is working on an Update kernel, that will be in updates
when it's considered ready enough...

But of course you have the choice of running my kernels for now ;-),
as they are in contribs...

So this bug is theoretically fixed, but I won't close it until it works
with the main mdk kernels...

The only reason the speedtouch module in the kernel is disabled,
is because we also have a standalone rpm that the installer uses...

So to not duplicate the drivers, the easiest fix was done...,
by only disabling it in the kernel... othervise it would have
required changes to the installer, and it was way to late for that...

I have just finished a new testinstall with a fully synced Cooker,

that uses DrakX v. 1.847 and this problem still exists...

and this bug does _not_ have anything to do with bootloader-utils,
since if I install the 2.6 kernel using rpm the symlinks does not change...

so afaik it's DrakX / drakboot that is messing up ...

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 syys 8 2003 vmlinuz
-vmlinuz-2.6.0-0.test4.3mdk

This is _bad_ since the lilo options linux, linux-nonfb and failsafe all use:
image=/boot/vmlinuz
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
as their kernel choice...

This will lead to users trying to fix their broken systems most likely
ending up with more problems, since without they knowing it, they will
be booting into an 2.6 test-kernel :-(

And this is definately an installer bug since all contrib kernels
are using -L parameter with /sbin/installkernel, and installing
a 2.6 kernel _after_ a newly installed system has been rebooted into,
won't trigger this behaviour

This is now tested with DrakX 1.847:

If you try to change that line by editing the textline (ex: ext3-ReiserFS),
the installer will later complain about an unknown filesystem...

This part now kind of works, but you have to know exactly how the fs has to be
typed: ex:
'Journalised FS: ReiserFS' is OK,
'Journalised FS: reiserfs' will give you a fs/partition type of 0x0, wich breaks
the install

'Journalised FS: XFS' is OK,
'Journalised FS: xfs' will give you a fs/partition type of 0x0, wich breaks the
install

Another bug that showed up is that if you try to create a new partition,
the window that shows available filesystems is _way_ too wide, breaking
the install window... probably due to theese filesystem descriptions:
Digital Research...
IBM ThinkPad...
Linux/MINIX...
OS/2 (1.0-1.3)...
SpeedStor 1024...

And last, but not least, a Request...

When you choose a partition size, and you request a larger size than the
available unpartitioned space on the hdd, diskdrake should correct the
request to largest possible...

Still Valid with DrakX 1.847...

a funny part is that even If I unselected kernel-enterprise, and selected
kernel-i686..., the enterprise version got installed, not the i686 one...

another problem that has showed up during install (but only once so far),
is that when selecting packages in the advanced mode, the installer executed
probing for serial ports, and went back to the beginning to language selection...

and so on...

Since this does not happend, every package that does not have
their depencies satisfied will be left uninstalled, leaving you
with a minimal install, even if you have chosen more packages...

And the urpmi databases / hdlist.cz is ok, since after rebooting
into the newly installed system, you can install all packages normally
using urpmi, and every needed package/ depencies will be installed
as they should...

Thank God for urpmi ;-)

Well, I can't reproduce the firewall bug above anymore,
since I have been running the 10mdksecure for about 7 days,
without lockups...

so the only problem left is the initrd umount failure wich still is valid...,
so I'm lowering the rating on this bug ...

the grsec part of kernel-secure is locking the kernel too tight,
as it blocks the initrd to get unmounted on boot...
(or actually it fails to sense the limits, setting them to 0)

Easy way to reproduce:

1. install kernel-secure
2. boot with it
3. you will see an error message about failing to unmount initrd..

if you look at the syslogs you will see:
grsec: attempted resource overstep by requesting 4096 for RLIMIT_CORE against
limit 0 by... (in this case console-chars)

now this same bug will show up if you try to start for example X (not that I
want tu run X on a secured kernel, but anyway...)

The worse part of this is that if you put it on your firewall,
it will slowly start to lock up the kernel since the grsec thinks it's an
hacking attempt, and will freeze it's functions by longer and longer periods
until your firewall/gw stops passing traffic through...

changing product to a more likely one...

and more info that tells me that it isn't bootloader-utils that are messing up...
when I install my own kernel-tmb using rpm, the /sbin/installkernel strips away
the mdk part from the lilo label...,
but when I installed it during a clean install, the 'mdk' part was not stripped
from the label...
so ... either the drakboot is not using /sbin/installkernel, or it passed weird
info along to it...

Are you using the firewall?
If so, is it configured correctly?

How do you configure your network ip numbers,
through DHCP, or have you entered them yourself?

This also looks like an acpi bug, so please
try to boot with one of theese:
(by pressing F1 end enter them on the command line)

linux acpi=off

linux pci=noapic

 Nothing has substantially changed...

It may feel so...
but since the newer chipsets are not fully supported in older kernels,
there will most likely be problems one way or another...

try booting with my boot-cd, press F1 at the beginning and type

linux noapic acpi=off

and see if it works...

Here is an other suggestion... go grab this image (from current cooker)
ftp://ftp.uninett.no/linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/images/cdrom.img
( or this one if you want to actually try to install a MDK 9.2 RC2+:
ftp://ftp.uninett.no/linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/images/cdrom.img)

and make a bootdisk to boot from ...

Of course you can't install your 9.1 with it, but I wan't to know if the 9.2
kernels work with your h/w...

so if you can boot with it, and it will complain about secondary stage
installer or modules... we'll know that 9.2 is capable of booting on you h/w

Actually I don't think bootloader-utils is to blame,
since as I stated in the initial report...

If you install the same kernel-2.6 on a running system
with only 2.4 kernels using rpm, the symlinks
wont be changed...

so there bug is elsewere afaik...

Can you verify that /sbin/installkernel is fixed in your system
according to the patch:

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/attachment.cgi?id=732action=view

do you install the kernel or the kernel-source first ?

I'm seeing some other weird things here...

I'm installing the kernel-source first...
my /usr/src now has: (since I have installed every source with rpm -i ...)
linux-2.4.22-7mdk/
linux-2.4.22-8mdk/
linux-2.4.22-9mdk/

then when I installed the 9mdk kernel, I got a ~linux-2.4.22-9mdk symlink
in the 7mdk and 8mdk directories... that points to the 9mdk

(the /lib/modules/'uname -r'/~build symlink gets created correctly)

Seems I have to take a second look at the installkernel script..

and follow the instructions on the page on how to use them...

Closing as invalid, as it's a mdk decision to provide
users with the choice speed vs full memory, so it's a
feature, not a bug

On a side note... we now also have an up kernel with highmem support...

When installing standard kernel-2.4.22.5mdk-1-1mdk from main and
kernel-2.6.0-0.test4.3mdk-1-1mdk from contribs during install
the initrd.img and vmlinuz symlinks in /boot points to the 2.6 kernel:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 syys 8 2003 initrd.img

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 syys 8 2003 vmlinuz
-vmlinuz-2.6.0-0.test4.3mdk

This is _bad_ since the lilo options linux, linux-nonfb and failsafe all use:
image=/boot/vmlinuz
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
as their kernel choice...

When you select the packages, the installer does not

ex.

if you select openssh-clients, openssh should be selected...

Since this does not happend, every package that does not have

with a minimal install, even if you have chosen more packages...

And the urpmi databases / hdlist.cz is ok, since after rebooting

Greetings,

it would be very advantageous to the Mandrake distribution to support by default
the sotware suspend (swsusp) patches in its kernel. Doing so, it would be the
first and only distribution offering this definite bonus. Swsusp patches can be
found at: http://swsusp.sf.net/
To give a quick overview, when activated, those patches enable the writing of
all the RAM to the swap partition (and a few other things) and turns off the
machine. At next bootup, the RAM will be rewritten with what's in the swap, so
the state of the machine is virtually identical to when it was turned off,
bypassing all the init scripts and so forth, bringing the boot time to a decent
time.

Thanks for considering this very valuable addon.

The trubling parts are the bcm drivers...
It should be fixed if you accept the patches I sent
to you Juan... (since I did a chmod on the patches before I packaged them...)

It is theese patches:

MC29-2_bcm5700_v6.2.11.tar.bz2
MC31-2_bcm4400_v2.0.2.tar.bz2

And you know where to get them...

With Mdk 9.0 it has performed without flaw.
First I tried installing Mdk 9.1 RC2. Neither during install nor after install
would the Mandrake see the hard drive or the cd burner on IDE3 and 4.
It is the same for 9.1 final.
Going into the mandrake control center under hardware the only controller that
shows up in Mdk 9.0 is the via IDE controller.
In Mdk 9.1 both an IDE controller and a promise 20276 RAID controller shows.
Yes it is a promise 200276 RAID controller but with Mdk 9.0 it is recognised
as an IDE controller and functions as is should based on the bios settings.

This patch (initially created by Andrey) adds the line:
'export LANG' to /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions

By adding this minimal patch my initscripts now speak to me correctly...

Now I don't know if this is the correct way to solve this problem,
but atleast it works for me...

Others (see bug #4000) have noted that this is due to a problem with XFS.
I haven't seen this problem on a 9.1 system that uses ext3. It's also
been reported that only if the root partition is ext3, and the other partitions
are XFS, there is no problem.

This problem is in all the kernels since 2.4.21-0.13mdk, and all, including
the current 'cooker' release, use the same XFS patch
snapshot 2.4.20-2003-01-14_00:43_UTC

I've built a clean 2.4.21 kernel, and applied the current patch from SGI
SGI XFS snapshot-2.4.21-2003-06-23_01:45_UTC for version 1.3 of XFS, and
the debugger works.

I suggest that an entry in the 9.1 Errata be made that systems that are to
be used for development shouldn't use XFS.

Well...

According to your lspcidrake and dmesg , you are using
ne2k-pci only for the 10mbit card, and
8139too for your 100mbit card

so your /etc/modules.conf need to have:

alias eth0 ne2k-pci
alias eth1 8139too

This bug was caused by the missing config_pdc_force in the install kernel...

With my modified boot disks the install worked, but the Promise controller
won the race over the VIA controller regarding wich ide chipset would be the
booting one...

This of course messed up the system, since the BIOS was set to use VIA as
primary IDE chipset...

Then the MDK installer tried to resolve the mess, by adding theese to the
lilo.conf:

disk=/dev/hde bios=0x81

other=/dev/hde1
 label=windows2
 table=/dev/hde
 map-drive=0x80
   to=0x81
 map-drive=0x81
to=0x80

but obviously it was not the way to go...

This bug was fixed by adding the ide=reverse to every append line,
and removing the lines above made by the installer, and making
changes to lilo.conf and fstab to match the ide=reverse setting...

Thomas

Could you send me the files /var/log/dmesg,
/etc/fstab and /etc/lilo.conf

both from 9.0 and 9.1 if possible.

how do you have the system bios set?
does it boot from hda first, or from Promise?

where do you have lilo bootloader installed?

and how do you exactly want your hardware to be recognized?

hda= what hardware
hdb= what hardware
hdc= what hardware
hdd= what hardware
hde= what hardware
hdf= what hardware

...

You can send me this info directly to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Regards

The PC is currently running Mandrake 9.0, installed on an 80GB drive on a Promise U133

I have tried removing the 13GB drive from the system, but this has no effect.

This one is fixed by the patches in bug 4060

Juan!

You need to apply those patches to the 2.4.21.2mdk...

As for the Madge Token Ring..., it's fixed in current Cooker

As for the Library routines..., It's not a bug,
they depend on a lot of things...
(or actually many things depend on them) so for the most part
they get autoselected so the system wont break...

This is due to the funny way this board is designed...
If you take a look at bootup messages, you will see that one usb controller
does not get an irq assigned...
Even more fun is that when you run it as usb v1.1, it uses 3 controllers
with two
ports each... but when you are switching to usb2 it seems that it's running
2
controllers with 3 ports each...
Now... This wouldn't be a problem, but in order to get it to work as it
should,
we need ACPI, and the acpi support for this board isn't ready yet...
but... it will be...

Thomas

PS. I'm posting my kernel later this evening with wich has udma100(133)
and firewire support included among other things...

installed. USB devices are: Kodak DC3400 camera, HP DeskJet 970 Printer, Epson
Perfection 1250 Scanner (all USB1.1 devices).

Problem: With BIOS USB settings set at V1.1 V2.0, Mandrake loads modules
usb-ohci and ehci-hcd. No apparent problems in dmesg. However, my USB printer
and scanner would be detected on only one of six available USB ports in MDK 9.1
RC2, and the camera would not be detected at all. (I am unsure of whether there
was a problem with previous builds).

Workaround: On changing the BIOS settings to V1.1 only, and commenting out the
ehci-hcd part in /etc/modules.conf, all six USB ports are able to detect device
insertion and removal (as seen in USBView); and the camera is now detected and
works correctly.

In Windows 2000/XP, all ports work correctly for device insertion and removal
when the BIOS is set to USB1.1 USB2.0.

if lspcidrake -v tells you that it wants 3c509 for the network,
make sure that /etc/modules.conf has a line: alias eth0 3c509

or if it wants 3c59x, make sure the above line states 3c59x instead of 3c509

Since you didn't tell us what hardware you actually have, this is the bast I

That I know,
but the ACPI stuff inthe kernel is known to get in conflict
with the APIC stuff... on some systems ...

Just an example:

I have an nForce2 board that has onboard 3Com network that
works only if either I'm running with acpi=off or noapic

The idea of ACPI is to tell the system how to use the hardware,
including the APIC...

On my system the APIC assigns my 3Com to irq21, but
the ACPI does not tell the rest of the system where to find
the nic, so it does not work... (for now that is..., when we get
better ACPI support this will be fixed...)

When I run acpi=off the BIOS and APIC is communicating as
they should, and the system works...

same goes for acpi=on noapic...

So yes... if ACPI and APIC does not communicate correctly,
you get into trouble

So...my question:

Have you tried to boot with acpi=off?
Does it work?
If so... It proves my point...

Thomas

PS. ofcourse I would like the ACPI stuff to work perfect,
perhaps 9.2 will be an ACPI release... But it mostly depends
on how the kernel development goes...

 None of these options helped.
As dmesg shows it seems that APIC can not be turned off by the noapic
kernel option. Are there more options for APIC?

I see that you have acpi=off in your lilo.conf, so those options I
gave you does not help... but that is not the problem...
this is:

 sis900.c: v1.08.06 9/24/2002
PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:04.0
eth0: Unknown PHY transceiver found at address 1.
eth0: Using transceiver found at address 1 as default
 eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xd400, IRQ 5, 00:0a:e6:57:2a:31.

could you send the output of lspcidrake -v

Do as the error-message states:

Make sure that the symbolic link
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build exists and points to
the matching kernel source directory

anp please place the output of uname -r instead of
the 'uname -r' above ...

and you actually dont need the whole nForce rpm,
only the nvnet part, since every other part is already
supported by the kernel...

Actually the UDMA support is there, but since the current nVidia driver in
the kernel has problem with detecting 80pin cables, it defaults to UDMA33...

This is possible to override with the boot-option ide0=ata66...

This way we get UDMA100 wich is the highest we can get with
the available documentation for now...

Thomas

PS. In about an hour I'll have a new testkernel out that upgrades
the ide subsystem to pre5-ac2, wich has merged the amd74xx and
the nvidia driver, to get UDMA100 directly.

PS2. About the kernel and the source for building nvidia drivers,
the kernel and kernel-source has been in sync for ages...
the only problem has been the missing /lib/modules/'uname-r'/build
symlink to /usr/src/linux

As the summary states, ALSA output simply doesn't work on this card in current
Cooker kernels. I expect the last ALSA update broke it (it used to work fine).
The card uses the snd-ens1371 driver. Any program which attempts to output to
ALSA natively freezes as soon as it attempts to play sound, and cannot be exited
normally, even ctrl-c fails to work - has to be 'kill'ed. This has been verified
with xmms in ALSA mode (using the xmms-alsa plugin), totem, xine with the ALSA
plugin, and ogg123 (which attempts to output in ALSA mode by default). However,
sound works with the ALSA driver if its OSS emulation is used - i.e., I can get
sound perfectly well with any program set to output in OSS mode, using the ALSA
driver. None of the programs I checked gave any error output, they just froze.
This is quite a popular legacy card. Can't find anything in the ALSA mailing
lists about this.
