arently *only* deleted the photo file and not the db entry within
darktable. dt does not rescan directories to see if file have been moved
or deleted or renamed.
use darktable to delete the file rather than some other app. this way dt
removes the file from it's database and the cache.

the process took me several days. part of the extensive time was
having jpg files in part of the collection, requiring I import also jpg
files and then remove the unwanted. and I did not sit and watch. removal
of the unwanted jpgs was minor as I knew exactly where they were.

o use an apt such as shotwell or ... or script to remove
the tags *after* export. or maybe craft an lua script to export images
w/o tags but I do not know that is possible.
fwiw, shotwell can handily add/remove tags and operate on groups of images
at once.

emove the images from the db
import the images again
will/should read the accompaning xmp files
or, maybe just telling dt to read the xmp files will work

import the images into a temporary library
export the images
remove the temp library
replace the altered xmp files from backup
just saying...
