Perhaps not. These days RCS isn't really used as a revision control
system but as a component in a variety of applications: some are
related to revision control, some are not (wiki engines, etc). We
don't keep it solely for interoperability.

And we don't have multiple implementations of it in Debian, either.
That is the *real* point.

Sure, run your SSH server listening to port 443, and use putty from
a trusted source (if running on Windows platforms). That's guarantee
to work even if they have a fascist proxy in place (if you configure
Putty to use its proxy).

The only caveat is that if you don't trust the system you are running in:

a) a sniffer would capture your passwords, you can use public key
authentication but then again a trojan could copy off the key and
capture your password anyway. You might want to look into one time
password authentication.

b) a trojan could potentially use your SSH tunnel (once established)
and inject commands in it. This can be done by replacing your putty
binary either in place (in the disk) or in memory.

I would seriously advise against running SSH session in possibly
compromised systems. Even when preventing a) since b) is always
possible. I have not seen such attacks/trojans widely just yet, however.

Proxies and firewalling is not in my experience a huge trouble in

computers is.

Is putty available as a Java applet, plugin or the like? That would
solve the problem that mindterm addresses, but I doubt it.

Depends on one's level of paranoia. Some people might want to not
attempt to access their machines when they are on the road; others do
not have the option or are anyhow willing to accept the risk that a
random netcafe proprietor will trojan his machines to sniff passwords.
For the latter group, SSH1 is still better than a telnet session.

No it isn't, but you can always download it from the putty project

settings you can't change in IE you can just download the exe file
and run it in the system you are using. Why do you need a Java applet

It might not scale as well right now, but efforts in the direction
of automated patch integration systems promise to close this gap.
See for instance the patch queue manager project[0].

 0. http://web.verbum.org/arch-pqm/

arch-pqm still requires that people publish their own repositories.
This is often a challenge for people behind firewalls.

If arch-pqm took advantage of the GNU arch capabilities and accepted
signed changesets instead of merge requests, things would be quite
different. Such an option exists for darcs, but I haven't used it.
It still doesn't provide the satisfaction of immediate feedback, I
fear.

Try a description more like that of Quake II:

Quake II is a 3D action game engine in first-person perspective, commonly
known as a ``first person shooter''.

This package contains no data files. You will need to either install the
commercial data from the Quake II CD-ROM with the ``quake2-data'' package,
or install some free data files.

This game currently supports software rendering with X11, SDL, or SVGAlib,
or hardware accelerated rendering with OpenGL (directly or via SDL).

NOTE: The network part of Quake II has several unfixed security problems. It
should not be used in untrusted networks.

I don't know about any single large project that produces releases that
are used mostly unchanged by distributors.

Of course, but if I look at Linux release management (which is still
somewhat problematic, as countless vendor-specific patches can attest)
and cursory pre-integration peer review, I think he has a point.

While I agree that Linus is a very bad release manager that doesn't have
anything to do with the developmen model.

And that makes Greg's article completely unfounded bullshit? Sounds
like a foundation already: a bad release manager chose a pyramidal
model. That's the beginnings of a good inductive argument. Then we
add the other foundation he gives: here's a bunch of well-managed
projects, which use a non-pyramidal scheme.

Do you have a specific complaint? Or is every single sentence in that
 post unfounded bullshit?

Pretty much every sentence. I didn't want to go through because it's
rather offtopic here, but as you're requesting it:

 * Limited development speed: even with the best tools, a single
integrator can only achieve a certain level of throughput.

the whole point of the pyramid development model as we have in Linux is
obviously to delegate decisions where possible possible while having
a single point for policy decisions when it comes hard to hard.

 * Opinionated maintainers: it is a rare individual who is always
right. For instance, the mainline Linux kernel does not contain a
kernel debugger because Linus won't allow it. I don't think
kernel development should be 'easy'. I do not condone
single-stepping through code to find the bug. [2]

So what's the alternative? People with commit rights fighting each
other leading to breakups? I am a firm believer that in the end one
person should have the final say for a given tree. This obviously must
come with an easy way for anyone challeing that person to have an own
not discriminated against, which is something that CVSs in the style of
BitKeeper/arch/git/etc allow easily by not having a specific trunk.

 * Limited filtering: work done by (or approved by) an area
maintainer is only subject to review by the branch integrator, and
such review may be cursory or nonexistent. Of course, anyone can
review all the changes that go into a branch, but only two people
are in a position to say no, this change does not meet our
standards; it cannot go in and make it stick.

That's not true at all. Everyone is in a position to publically speak
up and say that a change is not okay. Obviously only the release
manager for a specific branch has the final say, but his job is to
listen to the right people. This is extremly important to avoid commit
wars where people back out others changes without enough discussion.

For Linux, the consequences of these limitations have been slow and
unpredictable release schedules, poor stability of release branches,
and a lack of important standards (for instance, no consistent kernel
module ABI or even API within a release branch).

As soon as we actually had a release branch that was't a problem.
A stable internal API and ABI is not a standard in any traditional
sense of the word. It's a feature that's associated with a very high
engineering cost. One that's far too high compared to the benefits for
most free software projects - there's a reason none of the major free
software kernels keep a stable API/ABI. E.g. FreeBSD is breaking their
ABIs and APIs in the stable branches all the time and OpenBSD doesn't
even have stable branches except for security fixes, they have new
release every six month that completely break the API and ABI aswell.

Whether you prefer a pyramid or lots of commiters style organization
is pretty much a personal or rather community organizational issue.

Yes, and Greg is saying that a pyramidal structure doesn't work well,
and that bitkeeper doesn't really have many advantages unless you are
 using a pyramidal structure.

For one thing it has enormous adavantages over CVS or even SVN, as
having used bitkeeper for projects like that. Alone the feature of
offline development and coloberation without a central server is an
extremme productivity gain. Let alone the nice merge algorithms.

But again I think the pyramidal structure works extremly well for the
Linux kernel, it's actually very similar to the development model I know
that are used in development of extremly large in-house or propritary
software projects I've been involved with where normally every team
has a branch or two and these only get merged back by a gatekeeper
(which is usually a team of very few people) after extremly careful
review. It's not like the BitKeeper model is something that, the
concepts are more than 30 years old.

Well i meant both security and other updates. In the case where no better

Basically, as a rule, one should use the best upstream available. In no case
would that be ID software.

ID even goes so far as to mention that in their README:

Whenever an id game is released under GPL, several projects
start making the source code more friendly to nowaday's
compilers and environements. If you are picking up this release
weeks/months/years after we uploaded it, you probably want to
look around on the net for cleaned up versions of this codebase
as well.

While ID is to thank for the code, others will be supporting it, finding
those might be useful (and I agree with not trying to become upstream,
unless the OP is part of such a project already)

Perhaps not. These days RCS isn't really used as a revision control
system but as a component in a variety of applications: some are
related to revision control, some are not (wiki engines, etc). We
don't keep it solely for interoperability.

And we don't have multiple implementations of it in Debian, either.
 That is the *real* point.

Uhm, CVS implements RCS, but exposes a different interface.

No it isn't, but you can always download it from the putty project

Many internet cafe's or kiosk computers (or school computers, *sigh*
though they're a lot better than they used to be) prevent running
executables from outside specific paths, and limit write access to
those paths. Also, I've seen lots of kiosks that keep a browser in
full screen mode, preventing access to anything other than the web. A
java applet is the only viable solution in cases like these.

But we've know about it for a week. That's plenty of time to register a
source-forge project, knock up a coming-soon webpage, install a piece of

be cool to fix or add if ID hadn't been so lazy and a short treatise on why
this port is better than the other two. (A commercial port would send the

Actually importing the codebase into an SCM and working out what setup you

Description:
liblog-log4perl-perl - A Perl port of the widely popular log4j logging package.
Changes:
 liblog-log4perl-perl (1.00-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release. Excerpted changes:

die() messages in scripts using simple configurations and LOGDIE().
Added logexit() as an alternative way.

wrong Carp level.
 * (kg) Fixing bug in Appender::Limit regarding $_ scope
 * (ms) corrected typo in Synchronized.pm found by Rob Redmon.

in :easy mode (suggested by Jud Dagnall).
 * (ms) $INITIALIZED now gets reset during logger cleanup.
