Hi Paul,
You could always switch to the Linux version. It seems pretty stable.
I had a variety of minor issues with IB for Windows, but getting the
guardian process to work wasn't one of them. Sorry.
I spent several weeks upgrading my IB 5 database to IB 6 (ODS 3)
recently so feel free to
role at a web design company
with a bunch of young java programmers to look after.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Jeremy,
If you get IB 6 you won't need to worry about the licensing issue. It's
free.

Nic,
I'm guessing that James is referring to the TClientDataset. I've heard that
it saves a local copy of the data as a DBF (although I have no idea if this
is the full story, or even if it's true). Since I don't use this component,
perhaps you could give him the full story on this one.

or example, but it (and everything else) will hapily read dbfs
written in Dbase 3. And in almost every case, the difference is a single
byte in the file header. Go figure.
If you get really stuck, I have all the file structure stuff in a couple of
books at home.
Simon Mahony,
UDP is more suitable for small sets of data ( our UDP apps send and receive
no more than 512 byte packets ). This is due to network considerations, but
if you want to send streams or large chunks of data ( more than a few K )
and you don't want to have to chop them up and reassemble them at the
Matthew,
A TCP/IP session like this needs one or more client sockets at one end, and
a server socket at the other end.
The docs are a bit obscure and we had to rely on several sources of
information including the D5 Developers guide chapter on socket programming
before we could figure it all
Mark,
check out http://www.activeplus.com/
They have cheap/free software here that turns any program into a service.
We're using it here. With the exception of getting it to automatically
restart (which works according to one of my co-workers) it works fine, even
with a standard Delphi 5 app WITH

Is this normal ? Have I missed something ? And how should I recode to make
the records in the DBGrid visible again ?

Hi Nic,
should be fine. I'd more recommend you use it on Linux if you have a spare
machine - more stable - but it will work OK on 9x. 5 users is about the
most
tho :), but I have had a full ecommerce system (IB, VisiBroker, JSP etc)
running on a 98 laptop. Not pretty tho.

Yeah, damn shame we're in different cities...
I'm all for JSP, which uses JDBC to connect. I'm doing that at present

Just a thought (since I don't use QR myself) but are you sure the Access

Is it possible that it happens earlier in your code ?? It might be worth
stepping through it, as the fact that you always seem to get an AV when

Hiya all
Just a quick Kylix quest
Excuse me!!! (Mock shock horror and disbelief)
I think it's worth noting that programming for Linux requires a bit of a
paradigm shift for those of us used to working in Windoze. You have to
remember that Linux is a flavour of Unix, and there's a very good reason
why

Phil,
How does Oracle compare to Interbase ??

Looks like it might have been referencing a missing stored procedure - I've got it
working now.
Yet another useful and helpful error message for the books. It's almost up there with
"GPF".

Yes, there's a white paper on the Borland.com site called "DBase Index

It's quite good. I used it a lot in my Delphi 1 days.

Thanks Steven - I did get this working - I hadn't realised
