Hi Jim, Sorry for the late answer. On 05.03.22 23:15, Jim Woodworth wrote: Hi Peter, Thanks for the help in getting me started. Have just finished building. great! :-) I am on AlmaLinux 8.5 without a GUI. Am thinking I should be able to start it up by typing "soffice" once I have the right rpm installed. Question is which one? There are several. If you do not have a gui, I am not sure how you want to use Apache OpenOffice. The headless function is somewhat opaque to me, and I think it has some issues. You need to install all rpms. Apache OpenOffice is divided into several packages. However within the build folder there should be the build result. And you can directly start AOO there. With what configuration did you build? can you post to dev-Mailing list? Also I cc the dev mailing list. There you can ask questions by sending mails to the address. All developers will receive then your mail and can answer. Also you can subscribe and receive yourself all development communication. WHERE did you get this? Do you work for Microsoft? Or did you not understand the statement of Dean at all? see section 3.1 ** Beginning with Windows 10, version 2004, all new Windows 10 systems will be required to use 64-bit builds and Microsoft will no longer release 32-bit builds for OEM distribution. This does not impact 32-bit customer systems that are manufactured with earlier versions of Windows 10; Microsoft remains committed to providing feature and security updates on these devices, including continued 32-bit media availability in non-OEM channels to support various upgrade installation scenarios. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/minimum-hardware-requirements-overview I think drop of windows 32 bit support as Apple did it, is not feasible on Windows, since a lot of the Eco system is still 32 bit. Despite I do not believe 32 bit will fade away, I have stated that we should deliver a 64 bit Windows version of AOO. However the migration process is stuck. @Dean: No I do not work for Microsoft. This is my personal opinion. I want also to say something to the emotional threads. I wanted to express my concern that in a lot of times a discussion becomes emotional or personal valued. One indication maybe when one participant says that OpenOffice is dead or abandoned. Which I keep hearing, despite we have Maintenance releases. They are not the world, but we look after the code. And we make sure we fix issues. I asked once fo a definition what would be reasonable for a alive project. The answer has been every quarter a release. And at this point I think it is not about what makes sense or not. It is about being right or not. And this makes discussions very emotional, very quickly. It was not meant as a general statement on the Forums. Or critics on the Forum. I do not have the time to read the forums. I can not judge this. And I am fine if the forums support LO and AOO or what ever. Now people like Jörg and Hagar seem to feel attacked by me. I am not sure why, but maybe my English is shaky at the moment, and was not well written. So please take my apologies. I've limited the quotes because they have been really bad in the previous messages. Please take care when you want to quote someone else. I understand you're saying that forum users are emotional and they spread false information like MS would drop 32bit support. I don't remember any power user saying such things. We are hardly emotional in the forum, we have taken great care to avoid all the trolling and the FUD in all the AOO/LO topics (not that many BTW). The forum has been a long time champion of AOO (over LO). I think that the old subscribers on this list know me (as Hagar on forums and AOO mailing lists). Some other forum power users also participate to this list from time to time and I don't think "it is difficult to argue with" us. Your patronizing is rather ill placed. Personally, I despise what happened with the forking. I continued to support AOO a very long time. However, late last year, the level of this very mailing list reached a low that was the trigger for me. More energy was wasted on semantics or futile topics, some of the messages in this very discussion still show delicate interactions. Thus, I tried LO, something I would never have though of before. Just to see. And actually, it's good. After several weeks of testing for my production work, I can tell that it's better than AOO, it made me save times, ease my daily work and is stable. When it forked, I thought that it would be a great experience for the opensource community. Just look at the result years afterward: LO has embarked most of the developers! They started from nothing, compared to the Apache branding and they managed a marketing plan that got it where it is: included in most GNU/Linux distros, corporate support... I'm still stunned by how many users still don't know about LO and come to AOO first. This is the only thing that makes AOO still alive IMHO. The AOO project benefits from the huge OOo and Apache reputation/history. But I fear that's all. Can' wait for your gentle education BTW! Microsoft are yet to comment officially on when this will occur, but (seem to) have made indications this will be the case. At this stage, newer versions of window releases will require 64 bit hardware, but they will continue to support older 32 bit systems. AOO will have to migrate to a 64-bit Windows version eventually... But working on upgrading the SDK is the priority at this stage 🙂( "However I think it is more important that we upgrade the SDK first. It is clear that MS will continue to support 32-bit applications for sometime, and yes I am curious what this means for everyone's Steam collection 😉 Ultimately the source of my original post was someone not technically inclined thinking MS would be dropping support in the near future for 32-bit programs, which as we should all agree is not the case in the immediate future. Hi Dean, welcome to the AOO development list. On 24.02.21 20:35, Dean.Webber wrote: Hi everyone, glad to be here. I am going to jump right in with my intentions and to share some things. But I just figured out that I noted: [no issue yet] clean switch between GTK2 and GTK3 Argh Well I hope I can figure I find the code piece quickly. I know what to look for. Should I put this on the priority list? I tried to email direct from the list at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Directory+of+Volunteers but it seems this list may require update 🙂 Take it as an invite to make suggestions. My main concern is that some people believe that AOO is not being developed or updated, clearly this is not the case. I would like to point some of the volunteers in marketing, user support/assistance and business management to engage in forums and online communities to show that AOO is still being developed. Specifically, I am referring to https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/ and Reddit communities. Some people say that OpenOffice is dead for 10 years now. IMHO this discussion is purely emotional. It is difficult to argue with them. It seems that the moderators of the forum point users with issues to use LO, recently to someone with a small issue such as installing the desktop-integration RPM component of AOO on Red Hat Linux. It also seems that MS might be dropping support for 32-bit programs, so perhaps a x64 edition of AOO? Microsoft and 32 bit support. People should read closely. Microsoft stops the OEM 32 bit sale, but will provide support to existing 32bit installs. And that does not include the 32bit support in 64 bit environment. So there is no risk to be feared. And if someone writes that it is not true. I recommend that he should wonder what happens to his steam collection, since most games are still 32 bit. ;) However that is not an excuse for the situation on OpenOffice 64 bit version. The development has been started, but is now stuck I think for 2 years now. I am not currently sure where Damjan stopped. I think in the lower uno layers. I guess therefor we will continue if we look into this topic deeper. Probably together with the silicon port. However I think it is more important that we upgrade the SDK first. The One we wuse is ancient. :( What I would ultimately like to see, is any serious bugs ironed out that prevent widespread adoption of AOO, I only know of the UI bug, and to see AOO 4.2.0 included as the main Office Suite in Linux Distributions. <- Because AOO is awesome, as are the contributors and volunteers 🙂 👍 We would like to see that too. Easier said then done. :-D My background, Mechanical Engineering student from New Zealand. I will try to install AOO on various Linux Distributions and check the themes for UI issues. Sorry to jump right in without getting a 'feel' for what's happening at the moment in this dev-list. Keep up the great work on your projects everyone 🙂 🙏 🙂 You are welcome to post your findings. If you want you can apply for an Bugzilla account and note your findings there. However I would rather suggest to test with the 4.2.0 Version. All the best. Writing a list name in full, like dev@openoffice.apache.org can be tedious. So you will often see it called just "dev"." Well, that's it entirely. A useful shortcut notation you will often see on the lists. Writing a list name in full, like dev@openoffice.apache.org can be tedious. So you will often see it called just "dev". Similarly, top-level lists like tradema...@apache.org are often referred to as "trademarks@". This shortcut can be used to refer either to the mailing list and to the team that operates the mailing list. The context should make it clear, e.g., "You should check with trademarks@ on whether this will be problem"." The preceding 2 sections were about the mailing lists. While on the same topic, the person writing has a thing on their mind. It first mentions the thing without describing it in full. But what it fully expresses is just what it says of course :p. The closest alternative is: "Often times on the lists you will find that a shorthand notation is being used to refer to these lists. This shorthand notation will be like "dev" or also "trademarks@" and both will refer to a mailing list, in case you didn't yet realize ;-). The notation can also refer to the team that operates the mailing list. The context in which it is used should make that clear, e.g. "You should check with trademarks@ on whether this will be a problem." would refer to the people on that list. These lists reference "dev@openoffice.apache.org" and "tradema...@office.apache.org", just to be clear. The reason is that writing the list name in full could be quite tedious." Well, in my style, perhaps. If you would want to analyse: A useful shortcut notation you will often see on the lists. - person just came up with something he had almost forgotten and references it in advance as in "oh yes", points to thing. Writing a list name in full, like dev@openoffice.apache.org can be tedious. - reason for the thing that is going to be described So you will often see it called just "dev". - references both the thing and the reason for it Similarly, top-level lists like tradema...@apache.org are often referred to as "trademarks@". - describes the thing further, and the reasons for it. This shortcut can be used to refer either to the mailing list and to the team that operates the mailing list. - Mentions that the previous two things were the shortcut first hinted at. The context should make it clear, e.g., "You should check with trademarks@ on whether this will be problem"." - explains last sentence. Point is that yes it is Yoda style. And if you skip reading the other parts or you jump into the text it is quite incomprehensible, perhaps, yes, I think. But it's no different than. "Another thing. I mentioned earlier that ... I still feel you should do it but there are reasons bla. It is just not right yet." It is just something someone would say that just came up with something important that was nearly forgotten, or something of the kind. If you took it out of the paragraph and turned it into a header it would suddenly make more sense: 5. The context should make it clear, e.g., "You should check with trademarks@ on whether this will be problem"." Because it is exactly that, the text is just not formatted that way. It's a header not formatted as a header, that's all ;-). It's an announcement of what is to follow, like a header would be. Maybe it's pedantic, but yeah. That's just... Hi there Phillip and Patricia — Thanks for your e-mails. Is now the right time not to send to all? I’m happy to avoid that but, I don’t want to be a lurker. So, it’s interesting that some is C++ and some Java, and Yes I think the Java side will be easy to pick up, but I’ll aim to work on both. I use Visual Studio, now 2015 edition, and I’ve used Xcode with Obj-C and Swift a bit, but if there’s a free/ish version of another IDE you recommend, I can install that. Dear Sir, I am Rajesh Shirpurkar, I am from Aurangabad, India. I am a chemical engineer. working in the pharmaceutical company. Recently I have started using Apache Open office. After reviewing the official web site of ASF, I am very much impressed about the activities of this group. I am interested to join as volunteer. I do not have experience in the software development. Previously I was using MS office and I posses very good command on MS excel and wish to contribute open office. I am ready to learn the required things. Hello Allison, In addition to subscribing to the doc mailing list, a possible place of interest is the User Guide work on the OpenOffice.org Wiki, at <https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/UserGuide>, part of the overall <https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Main_Page>. The <http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-doc.html> that Keith mentions provides instructions on obtaining an account for editing the Wiki. You will need to subscribe to docs@ openoffice.apache.org first. For other forms of writing, there was a project to produce printable documentation that has gone silent, although there were some skeleton drafts. Finally, it is important to be conversant with the software itself. Also, keep in mind that, beside the international reach of the OpenOffice community, 87% of downloads are for Windows, about 8% are for Macintosh, and the remaining 4-5% is for all other platforms. Introduction
Hi My name is Jason Marshall. I am writing in order to introduce myself to the project in the first instance. I am aiming to contribute to the project from a development point of view, but would be interested in helping with testing and documentation. I am from Newcastle Upon Tyne in the United Kingdom and originally trained to degree level in Software Engineering in 2001. I then went on to work for the internal software house in British telecom for five years, which included roles such as developer, component designer and a little simple solution design. I worked heavily with extract, transform and load aspects of data warehousing, coding in PLSQL and Ab Initio. I would also inherently write Unix shell scripts, which I particularly enjoyed. I subsequently moved to some design and made us of the Unified Modelling Language. I have had some experience of ‘hot house' development. I also have experience with Java and C++, as well as the usual skills with HTML. I enjoy writing and working to document complex ideas so that they are accessible to everyone, hence my interest in documentation. I left IT in 2006 in order to retrain in a social science role and currently work in such a role for local government. However, I am aware that currently demand for IT professionals is high and I would like to re-enter the profession and so hope to be able to refresh my skills and experience, as well as giving something back and serving this project. I have been a long-time user of OpenOffice, having first installed it when I was handed a free CD by Sun Microsystems in 1999. Consequently, I have used OpenOffice for many years. Away from IT, I enjoy rowing, swimming and playing underwater hockey. I also love world cinema, as well as travelling in Europe. I am working through the orientation modules as well as embarking on the building process; due to having a day job and also looking to build on Windows 7 platform, this may take some time. Kind regards Jason
Re: Starting Introduction to Contributing to Apache OpenOffice Module
I think there is, however I can see some issues in the proposal. For example, I would like to understand how this system would be built further. Would you write a new module to AOO, giving it a new application like Calc or Base? Is this some sort of Macro built using Base and Calc or through an installable extension. In any case, it would be great if we can get more information about what your plan is. Starting Introduction to Contributing to Apache OpenOffice Module
Hi, While I have been developping OO applications, one on Base, one on Calc, for non-profit organizations, I have received many help from forum people. In order to give back what I have received, I would like to donate the Calc application, an accounting system, to the OO community. This application is making an extensive use of macros. So far, I wrote many comments in the macros, but I should write an overall documentation on how to use it (user's guide) and how it is built (architecture). Before diving into writing, I would like to know if there is any interest in such a thing. Hi, I am an aspiring AQA software engineer from California. I'm interested in volunteering at ASF for experience, exposure and to stay active in my field and gain momentum. My experience is with Selenium and Java (jUnit, TestNG, Webdriver) along with some mySQL (but not much) as well as manual QA. I hope that these are useful skills to ASF and I look forward to contributing. Thank you, Moses

RE: Krista Watkins - Introduction
Hello Krista, Yes, welcome and thank you for introducing yourself. The combination of C++, Java, and SQL can come in handy as you get deeper into Apache OpenOffice. We do have some Java dependencies and the OpenOffice Base application uses JDBC and Java-based database services. There are some other features that bridge to Java implementations, and folks can develop extensions using Java. A lot of this is tied into the UNO model for objects (in C++) that you will encounter. That's nothing to pay attention to now. It is something may catch your eye as you dig deeper into Apache OpenOffice. Enjoy your studies and the familiarization exercises here. - Dennis -Original Message- From: Kay Schenk [mailto:kay.sch...@gmail.com] Sent: Saturday, January 31, 2015 15:16 To: dev@openoffice.apache.org; kwatkin...@gmail.com Subject: Re: Krista Watkins - Introduction On 01/31/2015 08:27 AM, Krista Watkins wrote: > Hello Everyone, > > My name is Krista Watkins and I am looking forward to beginning my > volunteer work here with OpenOffice. > > Now, for a little background on myself. > > I am a second year student at Regis University working on a bachelors > degree in Computer Science. Krista Watkins - Introduction
Hello Everyone, My name is Krista Watkins and I am looking forward to beginning my volunteer work here with OpenOffice. Now, for a little background on myself. I am a second year student at Regis University working on a bachelors degree in Computer Science. Most of my work so far has involved using C++ but I also have basic knowledge of Java and SQL. Unfortunately, though, I have not had the opportunity as of yet to use my schooling in any real world setting. I am hoping that volunteering with this group will allow me to gain some much needed experience both in coding and also in the other aspects that go into creating and maintaining programs. To do this, I am willing to work with bug reports, coding, clearing tickets, and pretty much where ever else help is needed. I am hoping to be able to contribute about 2-3 hours a week at this point, with a hope to contribute more in the future. I have begun working on Modules 1 and 2 and I look forward to working with everyone. Kind Regards, Krista Watkins

Starting Introduction to Contributing to Apache OpenOffice Module - making labels
Hi, I do not know whether it has been fixed but making jam labels gets into a sticky mess. I get some 3 x 8 label sheets to fill with a label such as a background of orange slice and a foreground saying whisky marmalade. Getting the labels to fit the printer grid is a pain. I have to fiddle with font sizes and fudge the label into the right height. Width on the other hand is quite good at behaving.

Hello there, I started to subscribe these list since May. I began by asking question on API list, volunteer translation on l10n and doc, than finally, I start to investigate annoying issues I encountered. I come from Taiwan and am interested about issues specific to traditional Chinese. I tried to submit issues I've found ( https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125400 ), also attached the patch I've made, not knowing if I've did it right. I think you are busy releasing new version these days. Now that I know how to build and debug now, I may be able to help more. However it seems that wiki page for contributor is outdated: https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Contributing_Patches ( it suggest to use hg to make patch, and domain developer list marked outdated, URL to IRT & IIT links are invalid now. What is the correct procedure to propose a patch for defect ( or enhancement) ? Please advice. Sincerely. -- Mark Hung

Hello everyone, I am a sophomore studying Writing, Literature, and Publishing at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, though I am currently petitioning to create my own major combining Writing and Video Game design. Volunteering for OpenOffice is not for a class, but I hope to apply the experience I gain to my academic pursuits. I have experience with and am interested in writing, marketing/communication, and basic graphic design. However, I am more than willing to help with anything else. I am a quick learner and will do my best. That being said, since I will be studying abroad in Europe this semester, I can only volunteer 5-7 hours a week of my time. However, when I return home this December, my availability will increase. I hope to work with all of you for a while and become a valuable part of the team. Thanks, Sarah Spiers
