Thanks for this thread, this had been annoying me too, although not enough to go looking for the answer. The corresponding setting in Firefox is Tools / Options / Advanced / Tabbed Browsing / Open Links from other Applications in Its not entirely without risk, however: I went for a new tab in the most recent window... when I first tried it the most recent window happened to be a small pop-up type window with all the controls turned off, so I got a new - and completely unusable - tab in that. [slim] Re: Aaargh - no documentation! How do I...
Hello Jhd, The slimserver documentation has improved leaps and bounds over the past six months. It can take a little time for open source documentation to catch up with the progress and changes in the software. A number of people volunteer and contribute their free time to making constant improvements - and good questions and feedback such as yours helps ferret out the shortcomings. There is a lot of documentation out there, and it is no small feat to reorganize it. Its no small feat to even read it all! The slimserver/SB/player combination is also a pretty complex product (architecturally and functionally). It's no easy feat trying to describe all the easy, medium, and advanced capabilities, all the while making documention complete, short, and simple. Why isnt the version number in Help/About like in every other software package? I don't think this is an accurate position. I would hazard that most software that uses your web browser as its interface has no Help/About box in the menu bar of the browser (consider your interface to your router/firewall, google maps, for example). Your point is taken, however - the intial out of the box, setup experience could be easier. I personally am confident it will get better and better. Its clear to me that the folks working on the software are extremely bright, talented, and motivated to succeed. I'm concerned that the BBC is going the for quantity not quality route for its digital transmissions, be it downloads, streams or DAB. I'd like to see them at least offer the option of high quality sources, equivalent to FM stereo, for music and drama. I know that the bandwidth you need to support this will depend upon the compression method chosen and the the opinion of the listener, but for my money the 192kbps MP2 used for DAB Radio 3 (at times, its often reduced) does not match FM quality. [slim] Re: Random Mix and Crossfade
That's very strange. I've never heard of anyone having a problem like this. By default, Random Mix will select ten songs from your library (as filtered by the genre filter) and either add them to the end of your playlist, or replace your playlist with them, depending on whether you selected Add or Play. What happens next depends on the mix you selected: Random Song Mix: Every time a track ends, it will add another song to the end of the playlist. Random Artist/Album/Year Mix: Every time the last track of the current artist/album/year starts, a new artist/album/year will be added to the end of the playlist. The first time you start the mix, if an artist/album/year is picked that only contains one track, another one will be added to the end. Old songs will either be cleared or kept in the playlist depending on your settings. You can chose how many upcoming songs to maintain in random song mix. The default is 10, including the current one. This setting has no effect in artist/album/year mixes. Where's your 17 songs coming from? Have you set this in the Number of Upcoming Songs setting? What type of mix are you playing? The behaviour that you've said you'd like is exactly how Random Mix is meant to work. However, it doesn't (yet) prevent tracks being played more than once, so the mix will continue ad infinitum. Max ctviggen Wrote: I totally do not understand Random Mix. On my SB2 and Slimserver, when I select Random Mix and then Random Songs, it selects 17 songs then quits. I have the option of replaying those 17 songs or jumping through hoops to get it to select another 17 songs (i.e., I typically have to clear the current playlist and have to select something else, then come back to random). [slim] DTS Playback
I have some DTS flac files. I can stream these via my SB2 to a surround sound amp, and it sounds superb. However, two things I'm not particularly keen about are: 1) I only hear white noise through the analog outputs. 2) I have the Small VU displayed on the Now Playing screen - this doesn't represent the surround sound being played; I guess it represents the white noise that I'm hearing through the analog outputs. If I am playing random music through my HiFi, and SlimServer choses a surround sound file, it really doesn't sound good (could this damage speakers?). I appreciate that it might not be possible to downmix multi-channel data to stereo, but is it possible to simply turn off the other outputs when a multi-channel source is playing? At the moment, I am hoping to avoid the Random Mix problem by tagging all of my DTS surround sound files with an additional GENRE=DTS tag, and then ensuring this is not ticked in the genres to include in your mix. I'm not sure though whether this will work though - if I have a track with Rock and DTS genres, and Rock is included but DTS is not included, could the track be selected in a random mix? Guys - This marketing coverage issue is pretty simple is it not? Vendors that pay (yes, P - A - Y) advertising money within mags, specialist or not, will get more visible and favourable coverage. We're in agreement Dave2. I meant my response not as a this is open source reminder, but as a its a work in progress, and you're seeing progress in action indication. There are only so many things that Slim and the volunteers can be do to speed progress: more volunteers, more employees (== higher prices?), redirect existing resources (at the expense of features, stability, and/or time-to-market == different set of unhappy customers). [slim] Internet radio streams dropping after a few seconds connected
After upgrading my server to 6.2.1 (from 5.4.1) I started getting internet radio stream failures constantly. A stream will play for a few seconds then die. I do not know what debug flags to turn on to diagnose this but I guessed at a few and got some info that connections are getting closed. This is not a client or router issue nor an ISP. I have been testing with SoftSqueeze to eliminate local network issues, and my 6mb highspped internet connection is not epxeriencing any issues. I have looked through the FAQ and the forums and not seen anything that closely related. I should also mention that I have just tried AlienBBC to handle WMA and these connections seem to function OK. Re: [slim] Re: Foobar2000 output to Squeezebox 3
Yes, SlimServer would control both. foobar would not control the playback. foobar can only play back SlimServer streams in MP3 format. I believe it's high bitrate though, 320 kbps, so there will be no appreciable sound quality decrease for playing back an MP3 file or, for that matter, an MP3 Internet radio stream as they're nearly all of lower bitrates than 320. If you had a FLAC file, there will be some potential quality loss, but most say that a 320 kbps LAME MP3 sounds as good as the CD itself on everything but the very best audio equipment with some serious golden ears. To play back anything other than MP3 via a remote stream from SlimServer, you have to install the LAME MP3 encoder. It's free. To set it up, all you need to do is start up SlimServer and start up foobar. Point foobar to the URL: http://local IP address:9000/stream.mp3. Press play. Nothing will happen, but suddenly SlimServer should show a new player. Put songs and playlists into that player's playlist and they'll play through foobar. foobar will show the song title in its title bar but its playlist will remain as http://local IP address:9000/stream.mp3. You can also rename the player to something more descriptive. Then start your SB3. Connect to SlimServer and scroll up in the menu. Select Synchronize and then Synchronize with whatever name you named foobar. Instructions are contained in SlimServer's help section under Remote Streaming. --- Ben Sandee [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 11/13/05, akwok [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh! Most Internet audio streams are low-bitrate MP3s, 128 kbps or less. There are no FLAC streams that I know of. FLACs are in the 1 Mbps range. I'm with Jim :). I could give Pat a bunch of justification for wake-on-lan but it sounds like that's a waste of time. Especially considering that wake-on-lan has already been justified for sb2/3. Like Jim I got an SB1 just before the sb2 came out. If the slimbox was sufficiently open ended, I could add wake-on-lan support myself. Personally, it seems to me like a feature looking for a problem. You can do 90% of the power savings by figuring out how to spin down the hard disk and getting a temperature controlled fan. Considering that the implementation of WOL (at least for windows system, but I think for all systems) is really Wake up On Lan and Reboot the Operating System from Scratch (WOLROSS), how much do you really want all that to happen before you get a response to your keypress on the remote? I'm not even sure why they implemented it in the SB2, considering how awfully it must perform. -- Michaelwagner Michaelwagner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18144 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I agree that the XBOX makes an interesting media server! The HD can easily be upgraded, it's relatively quiet so it won't drown out soft musical passages (unlike some of the loud PC fans), it's got the built-in ethernet. Also, may be able to use it to play AVI/DiVX's off the HD. Since the Squeezebox becomes the user interface, there's also no need to turn on the TV to select songs... That would be a shame. foobar is a great player. The limitation isn't with the player either. Besides, do some listening tests. Most say that you can't tell the difference between a 192 kbps LAME-encoded MP3 and FLAC, let alone 320 kbps. I think I need to explain a bit better what I am suggesting. Imagine a serious bugfix. Imagine now is 1999 and SB1 wasn't Y2K ready. the world would end anyway like they're saying but Slim would I imagine fix this and release a firmware upgreade. Why don't Slim upgrade old SB1 firmware? - Because they have SB2/SB3 work to do - that pays the bills. - Because if they broke something it only means more work. Don't fix what isn't broken. - Because even if it were possible to do something if someone wants it that bad they will buy the current model (Slim need to make money). They had already bought the SB1 based on what it could do so you don't need to sell it to them. Now the wake-on-lan issue is a strange issue. No doubt it's a simple fix and it can easily be applied to SB1. And nobody is going to buy a SB2/3 just for wake-on-lan (well there will always be 1). Luckily for users of the SB2 they are using the same firmware as The New Squeezebox (AKA SB3) otherwise I imagine they wouldn't be getting WOL. But imagine Slim release new firmware for the SB1 officiallywhat can happen. - Introduce a bug - Someone screws up the upgrade, or it goes wrong Both of these cost time/money for Slim hence the reason why they won't do it...even if it was changing 1 byte of code. They don't want to set a precedent either. But now imagine as this is such a simple fix (I guess) and such a unimportant thing to most if someone somewhere acquired a unofficial file posted by someone who worked for someone. [slim] Networking issue with Linksys WET54g bridge
I have two SB's - an SBg and an SB2. I decided that I wanted my wireless to be single mode-G rather than mixed mode to work on stability. To do so, I hauled out an old WET54g bridge to work with my WAP54g access point. I have another WET54g in another part of the house feeding a small LAN in my home office and it works fine. My settings and network is the following: 1. WAP54g running HyperWAP/1.0 with WEP128 and G-mode only. MAC filtering on. Running on Channel 6. 2. WET54g in home office running Linksys 2.06 and connected to local switch with 2-3 machines 3. WET54g in kitchen with SB1 connected on ethernet 4. SB2 in living room on wireless G 5. Linux server running SlimServer 6.2 on FC4 So, the problem is that the SB1 seems to knock the WET54g off the network. I setup the SB1 to connect on ethernet. I can get the DHCP address, but when it tries to contact my SlimServer, it drops the wireless signal. This is reproducible each time I hold the power button and cause a reset. Are there any thoughts about this? I could go back to a mixed mode network and run the SB1 as wireless, but the signal strength is only about 30% and I was hoping G-only would help with that a bit (and some of the AP's flakiness about needing to be reset once a week or so). -MA ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Wow guys. With my initial questions I was neither proposing some firmware reverse engineering effort nor expecting an expensive official support solution. There was an open bug report in the current database that appears to have been under investigation for quite some time; I was trying to get the status. I *was* considering even upgrading to a newer box if that is what it would take. I'm also still interested in knowing if the existing box is extensible enough to add such a feature without any firmware backport (such as through the trick I suggested, not reverse engineering). -- bcc bcc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2284 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18144 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
