Any news on the link.

Will it come in automatically (ie thru fishbone) or do you need to tune

RE: [slim] Re: Tivo vs. Squeezebox - Sound Quality

2005-12-16 Thread Chris Brooking
MM works really well with the SB. Once you've enabled it from the
server, then you can press and hold play on any mixable song to get an
instant mix. Otherwise, you can generate mixes from the web ui (you set
default length, variety, artist style, etc values in the server), or
directly in MM and send them to the Slimserver.

Great! Thanks for all the replies.

I am using MusicMagic all the time with my TiVo. How does that work
with the SB, since the screen is only a few lines... Or do you have to
control it from your pc? Anyone using MusicMagic ( http://predixis.com

[slim] Bug? Date/time screensaver language settings

2005-12-16 Thread 0xdeadbeef

Why doesn't the date/time screensaver use the language settings of
Slimserver and Squeezebox?

Even though I have German language settings on the Linux system running
slimserver and in Slimserver, these settings are not used which I would
consider a bug.

I just learned that when starting the slimserver process in the boot
scripts, the locales settings are not yet active.
So I would have to add the following lines to my start script
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
LANGUAGE=de_DE:de

Then again I don't think making the start script language dependent
makes any sense if the screensaver could just take the current language
settings used by SQ/SLimserver.

It wasn't in the German but in the Unix forum.

The problem seems to arise from how Linux handles services started at
startup. If what Stinga wrote:

is true, then slimserver can't do much about it. You'd have to use the

In this case I think SS is doing the right thing - you can't infer the
locale settings from the current SlimServer text translation setting.
As an example, most of us will probably select English, but those of
us in the UK wouldn't want that to map to a locale that generated
US-format dates.

It would be possible to move the text translation SS setting to be a
more generic locale setting (possibly with a setting to say take it
from the environment), but I would consider that in enhancement
territory rather than a bug.

2005-12-16 Thread b_prem

Hello All,

For this, in the server settings, I chose the file and streaming

wav * *.

Now, when I chose a wave file, and clicked play, the play option is

tried playing it. I am facing problems.

You are essentially forced into a lossy format unless you want to
 upgrade your server.
I don't understand this. In my experience, converting to a lossy format
takes MORE horespower than to a lossless one.

is a GREAT choice in theory, but the fact is the major players (iTunes,
 WMP) don't support it
iTunes is the only major player I'm aware of that won't play flac.
There are plugins for WMP, and Winamp/Foobar/etc all play it out of the
box. Blame Apple for not supporting it and not allowing plugins to add
support.

The problem here is proprietary formats, but what baffles me is how
people blame Slim for supporting the open ones. Apple want to tie you
into iTunes/AAC, Microsoft want to tie you into WMP/WMA, Slim just want
you to be able to listen to your music. As soon as these companies start
(a) licensing their formats so other people can play them or (b)
supporting the open standards - then we'll all be happy. Until then,
complain to them.

This is the distinction between the classic line: That is not a

The SlimServer has a feature of using the locale from the OS.
One could propose an optional enhanced feature to allow the

If you're talking about 5.1 and 6.1 external *analog* inputs, then this is

Although I understand that non-DRM AAC isn't proprietary - it is defined
as part of the MPEG-4 standards.

That's not to say there isn't licensing issues with AAC (just as there
is with MP3 - hence LAME) - but Roku and lots of other applications
have implemented AAC. My Sony Ericsson mobile phone plays AAC tracks as
ringtones without a problem.

I'm sure it is a priority call by Slimdevices - while AAC may not be a
proprietary technology, I'm sure there are lots of other things that
are higher priority than native AAC on the Squeezebox given there
already is a workable solution based on server transcoding.

But yes, not all receivers have multichannel

[slim] Routers known to work with Squeezebox and WPA

2005-12-16 Thread flatspyder

My squeezebox arrived the other day and I'm gradually getting to grips
with it. It's a great product, but getting all the settings on the
server just how I want them is gonna take time I guess (no fault of
SlimDevices!)

Unfortunately our SB3 refuses to connect to our router when using WPA
TKIP. This is a real pain as I need it to be using wireless when
located upstairs in the barn. I brought it over to the house and tried
it using WPA TKIP and our Buffalo Wireless AP and it was all fine :)

So I guess we're going to have to buy a new router :( Could anyone who
has a router that works with a SB and WPA TKIP please post the model
and let me know any experiences, good or bad that they've had. Btw the
current router is a Kcorp Lifestyle KLS-5810. I'm looking at the
Linksys WAG354G. Oh and I live in the UK, if that affects anything.

Thanks

-Oli

[slim] Re: Native AAC Support

2005-12-16 Thread bishopdonmiguel

I don't understand this. In my experience, converting to a lossy
format takes MORE horespower than to a lossless one.

If your goal is to keep CPU activity to a minimum, you have to choose a
path sans transcoding. Transcoding effectively eliminates many
supported formats if it causes performance problems and you are left
to choose from those available in the player. For a SB1, MP3 is the
only real choice which led to my comment. Many of us cannot justify
moving on to SB2/SB3 simply for FLAC and WAV just takes too much space.
I think the long term goal should be to support all major formats
(where possible) in firmware. That's just my opinion, it might not be
popular and I have respect for any others but I'm honestly not sure if
I will ever upgrade without wider native support. Let the user choose
the best flavor for their situation without the worry about burdening
the server.

iTunes is the only major player I'm aware of that won't play flac.
There are plugins for WMP, and Winamp/Foobar/etc all play it out of the
box.

Well, I'm not much of an iTunes fan and my lossless format of choice
right now is WMA. I wasn't aware that Microsoft had a FLAC plugin for
WMP so I will have to look for that. I do realize there are other
players available but I suppose I was referring to the majors as those
available for free that have the highest install base. I assume iTunes
for Mac and WMP for Windows are the major players, but I most definately
could be wrong.

The problem here is proprietary formats, but what baffles me is how
people blame Slim for supporting the open ones.

You misunderstand my position. I applaud Slim for supporting FLAC and
would like nothing more than to see MS/Apple do the same. I don't
blame Slim for not supporting proprietary formats if doing so is
impossible. I don't know enough about the process to know if it's a
choice not taken or a choice not available. As an average user,
I rarely look further than what is installed by default and for free.
I don't think I'm unusual in that regard and the formats supported by
the major applications are the ones that naturally have the highest
usage. For the average user who wants lossless, the choice is WMA or
M4P. This isn't a rip on Slim or FLAC it's just a fact of life.

Also, what version of firmware are you running?

I'm still looking at this.

I'm running what ever version of firmware ships with 6.2.1 - 5194 -
Linux - EN - utf8. I'm not sure how to check, but I think this
answers your question.

I rearranged my network infrastructure to put my UNIX box and one of my
Squeezeboxes on a hub (it was on a switch, where I couldn't capture
packets). I also figured out how to run and use Ethereal from Linux,
and I got that all squared away. Then I installed SlimServer to my
Windows box so I could bring that box offline to reproduce and, much to
my disappointment, the problem did NOT reproduce from my Windows
server.

This leads me to believe (I haven't verified this yet) that it might be
a DHCP issue, but I can't capture packets to find out since my Linux box
(where I capture packets from) needs to be taken offline to replicate
the original problem.

I guess I see two choices:

1) Eliminate DHCP from the equation by reconfiguring the box to get a
static address, then try to reproduce, or

2) Get some packet sniffing software installed on Windows, reconfigure
my network to capture from there, and then replicate the original
problem.

Is #2 easy to do? Any suggestions for such software?

Would trying #1 be a reasonable approach?

2005-12-16 Thread snarlydwarf

There is a version of Ethereal for Windows.

http://www.ethereal.com/

My guess is that it's related to something in the switch that for
Mysterious Reasons doesn't like seeing a DHCP packet too soon after
reboot... but why it would be so upset that it would ignore further
ones is curious.

It will probably work fine with the hub.

No, that's the slimserver software version and locale. Instead, look
just above that info for Player Firmware Version in the web or look at

[slim] Default player in web interface

2005-12-16 Thread JJZolx

I recently added a second SB2 to my network. When I pull up SlimServer
in a browser, the player displayed in the right-hand pane is always the
second player (second both in that I added it last and second
alphabetically). This new player is used in a secondary system, while
the original is in my main audio system.

Invariably I'll end up playing music on the secondary system when I
intend to play it on the main system. Can the default player shown in
the web interface be changed?

Normally, the buffer fullness should be 0 (0%), and this would cause
the SQB to generate a decoder underrun frame. But the SQB is reporting
that the buffer still contains an orphaned fragment, and never causes
the run of DecoderUnderun in streamproto. The slimserver never
recieves

the d type STAT frame from the SQB. I am rerunning with debug flags
enabled to get more details on the http and stream status when the
error occurs.

I guess the question is why would the SQB firmware assume there was
some tiny amount of data in the buffer and never clear it out?

[slim] Thanks!

2005-12-16 Thread MrC

Last week, I reported a partial display failure
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18958).

I emailed support the next day, and received a reply accepting the
replacement of the unit. I had indicated that since I'm near Slim's
headquarters that I would be happy to stop by and do a manual swapout
to save time and shipping. I was informed that I could pick up the
unit anytime.

I picked up and brought home the replacement unit yesterday, plugged it
in, configured the settings, and everything just worked.

So, here's a Thank You to Slim Devices for your excellent customer
support, and it goes without saying, your outstanding SB2 and SB3
devices. These little, elegant boxes, as others have also mentioned,
have completely changed the way I listen to music, and have further
renewed my passion for music.

Happy Holidays Slim !

Can the default player shown in the web interface be changed?

I've asked this question a few times myself. Seems some other skin(s)
remember the last player used but not the default skin. As I prefer
the default skin, my workaround was to physically switch the players
and rename them. This workaround has been very effective and the
prefered player always appears by default. Not sure what the selection
is actually based on, but I've always assumed it has something to do
with the MAC addresses.

2005-12-16 Thread 0xdeadbeef

Ok, maybe I'm missing something here.
I really wonder:

1) What - apart from the date/time screensaver's language settings - is
influenced at all by the OS locales regarding SB/Slimserver?

2) If reading the locales is the way for slimserver to configure its
language, why are there language settings in the software itself?

3) If slimserver ist started from the usual Linux start scripts where
the locales are not defined yet, why would the slimserver software
expect locales to be set?

I mean, of course I can patch the start script. But this is a hack and
thus slimserver is NOT getting the OS settings but the ones I hacked
into the start script.

I'm betting that it has to do with the order that the clients are

They are completely different codecs, but use the same wrapper, which

At any rate, what I want is a compressed lossless format like FLAC or
Apple Lossless that is natively supported by both iTunes and

If my music is stored as FLAC, then iTunes won't play it. And if it is

It will, but at the cost of conversion from AAC to FLAC using
QuickTime. Have you found that this conversion is particularly CPU
intensive? My experience is that it is not. What's the speed of the

Is there no solution to this that doesn't involve on-the-fly format
conversion on the server?

Not at this time.

Looks like they get sorted by MAC address in the prefs file. If I
change the order, SlimServer jusr overwrites the prefs file with the

In Slimserver you've probably set your playlist and music directories to be
the same directory. That results in all of your music showing up as
playlists. Change your Playlist directory to a different directory and
things should behave as you expect.

One things to watch out for is that there are two flavours of mplayer

to the Unix file. But anyway the codec (which may be part of reallib)
is also needed.

[slim] Re: Enhancement request: Full support for iTunes Dynamic playlists

2005-12-16 Thread eschurr

Thanks tons for your message -- i'm thrilled by what i've read for the
iTunes Update plug in. It sounds perfect.

i'm trying to get it working in direct update mode, but it says I can't
run SS as a service. I know how to turn the service off in Windows, but
how do i run SS not as a service? I believe if i choose start SS from
the SS tray application or from the Programs list in the Start menu it
will start it as a service. Is that right?

I also tried running Slim application in program
files\slimserver\server. it brings up a DOS window and displays some
messages, but it doesn't appear that SS is running (my browser can't
connect to it).

Anxiously awaiting some help -- i'm really excited by this plugin!

i've had a similiar problem during recans. my solution was to set the
iTunes rescan interval to 0 (to disable it) and then use the rescan
plug-in to schedule rescans to run at night when you're not using the
CPU.

if you add a new song to iTunes and want to play it in SS right away,
use the browse music folder option.

[slim] Re: Elpac power supply for the SB2

2005-12-16 Thread rcb

Hi,
newbie here, so pls excuse the cross-posting...

I've just got a (wireless) SB3, and was following the thread re
improvements when using a linear power supply to replace the stock
switching power supply. Folks have recommended the Elpac
WM075-1950-760... so I tried that model, but, given the results, I'm
willing to wager that the SB3 sometimes needs 2amps, while the SB2 made
do with less...Bottom line, I haven't gotten
the Elpac to work.
The Elpac is rated at 1.5 amps. When it's connected to the SB3, for me,
the display flickers and is dim... and the rest goes downhill from
there...(and yes, this SB3 has the latest firmware).
Has anyone had luck with the Elpac and the SB3 (as opposed
to the SB2)? I've measured the output w/ my meters, and it seems
to be working OK.

Sure enough (kicking myself, should have looked first): the switching
supply that comes with the SB3 says 1.5V, 2 A output...
So: anybody have any recommendations for a linear power supply for the
SB3 - doesn't seem as though Allied has a 2amp one...

thanks

PS: I have found that by-passing any pre-amp stage
does indeed, as expected, do wonders, as do several outboard
DACs (though the DACs have made less of a difference, IMHO - I have
tried the Benchmark; the Audio Aero Capitole,
and the Esoteric DV50s -- all upsample to 192khz...)

It will, but at the cost of conversion from AAC to FLAC using
QuickTime. Have you found that this conversion is particularly CPU

Hi Dean,

As I mentioned in my reply to Sean, my server is not a Mac, so
QuickTime is not available to do the transcoding. The server is a
low-powered LinkStation with limited CPU and RAM resources. While a
fully lossless format (ALAC) that is natively supported by both iTunes
and Squeezebox would be ideal, I would be happy with high bit-rate AAC
if it were natively supported in firmware. The Roku SoundBridge does
this, so it is clearly possible.

[slim] Infrant X6 or 600 + SB2/3 users, opinions please!

2005-12-16 Thread Jetlag

I am seriously considering going with a new Infrant X6 for my NAS and to
run Slimserver.

1. For those that are already doing this, have there been any issues
or recurring problems?

2. My music is currently located at J:\MUSIC\_FLAC_DB on my HDD #3,
and each album is in it's own sub-folder. How are/do you designate the
music folder on the ReadyNAS?

2a. Is it flexible (i.e. you can name it whatever you like)?

3. Will it still read the sub-folders?

4. Also, can you update the X6 using the dailies, or must you use
the version of Slimserver from the Infrant site?

Thanks.

Any other comments suggestions would also be helpful. I am planning to
set it up on my Linksys 10/100/1000 network (wired), connected directly
to the switcher.

[slim] Re: Native AAC Support

2005-12-16 Thread seanadams

samlw,

Your situation is not typical at all - nearly everyone using AAC is on
Mac/Windows (or a linux machine capable of running faad), in which case
it simply works. I'm not sure why you keep pushing the SoundBridge
button - we are well aware that porting codecs is possible, but I
think you underestimate the cost of implementing and licensing codecs
for an embedded system. As we've said, the benefits are relatively
miniscule in the case of AAC, given that it already works just fine on
any of our supported platforms. That's not to say it won't happen -
just that it's not a high priority.

BTW if you ever need to use ANY lossless format (Flac, Apple, WMA) or
any non-mainstream/emerging format, you will be very glad you chose
Squeezebox. :)

We do appreciate the feedback though, and client-side AAC is understood
as a desirable feature.

Sean

Sure thing. At the bottom of the page, there are links. One of them
is Edit. Another is Formatting. Click it. It will take you to a page
to register a username. Once that's done, add a single row in the
appropriate table, just like the others, but with your data. Preview
the page before you save it, and once you're satisfied, save. See the
Wiki formatting instructions if you need more info.

The SoundBridge doesn't support Apple Lossless -- nobody does, because
it's part and parcel of Apple's hyper-proprietary world. And while the
SoundBridge does support AAC, what's the benefit of AAC for you? If
high-bitrate lossy is acceptable, just use MP3 and get universal
compatibility.

[slim] Screen pixellated, SB3 reset itself, now can't reconnect

2005-12-16 Thread stoobie-doo

Has anyone seen and recovered from this?

My SB3 was having streaming problems - the SlimServer moved further

random dots, froze in that pattern, and then after 2-3 minutes, the box
reset.

Now, I can no longer connect to my wifi network. I was having problems

enter my WEP password (I had not had the WEP problem before, only the
lose the IP address problem).

Anyone else had an issue like that? And more importantly, has anyone
