Yes, that's the first expression I've found. Lärm and Geräusch both
stand for noise. While Geräusch is rather neutral, I'd consider Lärm
negative. Dealers selling those pads might think we don't like our
machine's noise. But that's quite off topic :-)

My SqueezeBox doesn't sync with anything I'm aware of.

Since it's seems to be a player problem and not a server problem, I
guess it doesn't matter on the platform the server is running.

I'm using SB2, just like the initial poster. Maybe there's a problem
with the firmware v55 and SB2? Anyone out there using SB2 with firmware
v55 who doesn't have this problem?

[slim] Re: New Slim Devices Product? The Transporter per 6moons.com??

2006-08-02 Thread rhyzome

I think the SB's plus point was its low price and audioserver bang for
the buck given the features. If you start making it an audiophile
component from the get go though, the glaring problems with navigation,
etc start becoming exposed. The Wheel MAY address some of those issues,
but the encoder doesn't fully compensate for the lack of a 10-foot
display.

I don't doubt the Transporter will work for some, but equally I think a
Mac Mini or a silenced MITX machine + RME Fireface 400 will give equally
good audio results combined with a higher degree of flexibility - for
significantly less money, if the Transporter is $1999.

In which view are they not showing up? If you are browsing by artwork,
it's usually because you have a song with an incorrect tag. Enable the

Michaelwagner Wrote:
Mark: Why the requirement for 2 drives?

You're right - in my present system, I only use 1 drive and back it up
to an external drive.

I guess I still had it in my mind of trying to compete with the NAS
boxes. The higher-end consumer ones use drives in RAID 1 or RAID 5.
Of course there are drawbacks to that - if your drive controller fails
you have useless data unless you get the same exact drive controller to
replace it. With ClarkConnect I would've been using software RAID,
which is slightly more failure-prone and would corrupt both discs if it
failed. No backup in this case would mean loss of data. Also with 2
discs powered by the same power supply, if something were to happen to
the power supply they may both be damaged. Plus 2 discs pushes the
power and heat dissipation requirements up.

Did you find any prices on that iBT web site?

Nope. They seem to supply to industry - they supply a lot of SBCs and
PC104-type PCs, including some unique high temperature SBCs. Note an
SBC in a PC104 configuration would work well for SlimServer too, the
problem is finding a case.

With industrial suppliers like that, they may not supply to individuals
either. And the no prices thing is meant to deter people like us from
comparison shopping.

Hmm? I can easily read the display from 15 feet away (and I wear
glasses) plus it is a multiline display (2 lines).

Also with the new 2-display Transporter, you may be able to stretch
text over both displays, which would make the text width at least as
wide as you'd get with a 15 monitor, even a 17 monitor.

Take a helluva lot less real estate and power than a PC too, and even
quieter than a low noise fan.

Just back it up to an external whenever you change it, and be done with

CavesOfTQLT Wrote:
Maybe so but with a system that's running 24/7 you want it to consume as
little juice as is possible, if not for pennies sake but for the
 environment...

One justification for this for me would be power consumption.
Currently I'm running SS on a P4 system, very power hungry. I'd still
be using it all day long, but at night I could shut it off and let a
low-power SS server run so that it could wake me up in the morning (I
use an SB2 as an alarm clock).

There are lots of peak power calculators out there, but I'm looking for
idle power figures. Unfortunately these are very hard to find. The
best one I saw was this:
http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/anton/computer-power-consumption.html

I assumed my P4 system was like his P4 system in the Boxes section near
the bottom, but mine is newer/faster and has 3 discs, so I
conservatively assumed 80 W idle. A fanless VIA system would be like
the last entry in his Boxes section, 16 W, but with one disc at 7.3 W
idle, see here:
http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200511/SP2504C_6.html. That's a
savings of 56.7 W. Now I'd be saving this for 14 h/day (my P4 system
would still be running during the day) so that's 0.79 kWh/day. At our
power prices of $0.058/kWh, that's only $16.80 per year! Unfortunately
this hardly justifies spending $300 just for the motherboard...

Amazingly, even with the monitor on ~8 h/day, assuming my 17 CRT draws
60 W, the power costs for my P4 box for an entire year is only $47.42.

I do like saving power but I'm also an engineer and I know an
uneconomical project when I see one.

I may take your advice and use one of my unused older systems though.
This would save manufacturing a new one - I've already saved every
computer I've come across from the landfill. I have a secondary PC
with a 1.2 GHz AMD Duron - I was going to use this in the basement for
model railroad use. I still have my first PC with an AMD K6-2 400 MHz
processor, and I built a P166 from discarded parts (which ran
ClarkConnect 2.2 although quite slowly). My most recent find is a P4A
system, unfortunately with the pricey RDRAM gone. However, ADDING
another PC that's not plugged in now would just serve to increase my
power consumption over what I have right now. I'd have to use it to
replace what I'm currently using, and even then the power savings are
small.

It's too bad. Much like gasoline, although electricity is expensive,
it's just not expensive enough to justify spending that much cash.

Unfortunately with 1 3.5 HDD it blows the previous estimate out of the

Your DHCP server is giving out an address that is already in use by your
computer. If the DHCP server is the Linksys router, as it probably is, your
problem lies there, not with the squeezebox. Try rebooting the router and
all devices on your network.

Or, use static IP address assignments for the squeezeboxes. In other words,
tell it what it's IP address should be, rather than having it ask the router
for one. If you already statically assigning address, then YOU screwed it
up and gave two devices the same IP. :-)

This is not a Squeezebox problem, the Squeezebox is just the canary in the
coal mine telling you that you have a DHCP problem.

Drives need cooling too - more than CPUs, really. A processor can run
happily at 60 C, but more than 40-45 for a drive is pushing it. You'll
want some substantial heatsinking if there aren't any fans in the
system.

Fanless is nice, but why do you want a fanless server? You can't get
rid of the drives (heck, I'm thinking of getting an i-RAM for my
desktop, but that's no good for music), so there's still some noise,
and cooling will be a nightmare. Energy efficiency matters, but if the
system is stuck in a closet somewhere, does it really matter if it
makes a little noise?

Point well taken. Again, I was just trying to compete with the NAS
proponents.

So maybe that FlexATX case with fans doesn't look so bad after all.

I've also found fanless ATX power supplies, but what's interesting
about them is that there has to be case ventilation, in fact above
average case ventilation, in order to use them. So you might as well
use a PS with a fan in that case.

P.S. The cheap USB 2.0 enclosure for my backup drive doesn't have a
fan, but the case is aluminum and the HDD slides very tightly into it,
so it acts as a big heatsink. Plus I only use it for ~15 minutes at a
time anyway. It barely gets above ambient. However when I formatted
it and did my first backup it got warm-to-hot.

Switch to a static IP arrangement and it'll never happen again.

Your router is probably 192.168.1.0. Assign your PC 192.168.1.1 and
your Squeezebox 192.168.1.2.

Just make sure all devices are on the same subnet (i.e. the first 3
numbers are the same) and don't duplicate.

Static IPs may not be good for a network where you have visiting
clients, i.e. a wireless laptop that connects infrequently.

At today level of price for used computers is unnecessary to see at low
low Celeron/Pentium II (Slimserver is light but if You have a large

is a RAID configuration in a small case? (More than 300Gb, but there
are now on the market single HD - perpendicular recording - of 500Gb

I think Sirius is WMA - which SB3 can handle but SB1 cannot so it needs
to be transcoded on the server. If you listen to Sirius in SoftSqueeze
then it should work on SB1.

How WMA transcoding is done will depend on your OS. For Linux you'll
need something like Mplayer/AlienBBC

Of course no-one outside of SD has heard the transporter yet, but the

[slim] Re: SlimServer on Mac-Waking Up Server

2006-08-02 Thread cepheid

No, I believe the problem is that browser access can't wake the
computer. To wake a sleeping computer, the ethernet port has to
receive a magic packet that wakes it up, a.k.a. the wake-on-LAN
packet. The Squeezebox is configured to send such a packet, hence it
can wake a sleeping computer. Web browsers do not send the magic
packet, however, so if you're trying to access a sleeping computer, it
will not respond.

Essentially, you cannot wake the server via simple browser access.

The screen going blank is behavior indicative of the Squeezebox losing
it's connection to the Slimserver. Low signal strength or wifi
interferance can cause this, or possibly an issue with Slimserver
itself. (firewall snapping closed, or the server app is shutting
down.)

Can you try resetting the Squeezebox to factory defaults:

- Unplug the unit
- Hold down the Add (+) button on the remote while you plug it back
in
- You should see Factory Reset... on the screen briefly

Then, go through the connection process again. Is there any change in
behavior?

If not, can you tell me a few settings from one of the Squeezebox
menus?

On the Squeezebox remote, hold down the left arrow button for 5
seconds. This should bring you to 'Set up networking'. Then scroll
down to 'View current settings' and press the right arrow. From
there, can you tell me:

* IP address number
* Wireless signal strength
* MAC address
* Firmware version

Let me know and I'll do what I can to help.

[slim] Re: Easy way to re-run network setup?

2006-08-02 Thread twylie

bringing this back up to see if a feature request exists for ability to
select the server independant of re-running the network setup. I have
one library on a RAID5 server in the basement, but multiple PC's
running around the house. Different platforms, some SS playlists, some
iTunes playlists, etc. iTunes is great for creating drag and drop
playlists, but if done on a machine other than the XP box running
slimserver, it gets tricky to feed these playlists to whole house audio
or a specific room with a SB. The ability to dynamically change the
server the SB is pointing to (without re-running setup) would be a
great feature to me. The SoundBridge has been doing this since its
inception as I used it to toggle between my slimserver instance and an
iTunes library on a separate machien that popped on and off the
network. The Soundbridges have now been (mostly) banished and i miss
this feature.

Let me know if there is an item to vote for and I will.

thanks,

twylie

[slim] Re: help needed: explicit path to iTunes XML file

2006-08-02 Thread twylie

I tried opening the UNC path directly on my XP box running slimserver
and while I could open the XML file (after I dropepd the /Users from my
path), I could not get SlimServer to accept that path for an iTunes XML
file.

My workaround was at Ross' suggestion - I loaded SlimServer directly on
the macmini and switched the server my SB3 was pointing to. Have some
updating to do as the OS X nightly I downloaded doesn't match firmware
levels of 6.5.1b that I was running on the XP box. Worked for my short
term needs. I bumped an old thread discussing fast switching of
slimservers on a network... just let me know where to vote :-)

Thanks to support for their quick response and workaround for my kludge
setup.

That was a good idea. I tried SoftSqueeze and it worked. Now to look

area.

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2607

short answer is won't be fixed as an on-the-fly selection, but we could
possibly get acceptance of a choice of predefined network/server
setups. For me, this would be perfectly acceptable and provide some
improved harmony in the house. Even the hold the left button to
reselect isn't a great option for me as my SB3 is in the basement
feeding a distributed audio setup. Web interface changeability is what
I'd need to make it super easy.

Maybe this can be looked at in conjunction with some of the future
changes being made in support of SqueezeNetwork. I know there are
plans to make the web interface work better with SqueezeNetwork, and I
believe this includes the ability to get an SB2/3 to connect and
disconnect from SquuezeNetwork through the web interface. Having the
ability to connect or disconnect an SB from a local server would
probably be very similar.

If so then the problem probably lies with the Sirius plugin and

Try debugging with d_plugins d_source and compare logs for

the problem.

[slim] How Often Does Slim Serve Scan for New Music?

2006-08-02 Thread Jazz1

How often does it scan on? Can I control this? I'm thinking some of my
dropouts are happening when it decides to scan. I put the new Tom Petty
CD on my server and then went upstairs and I had stalls. I did see text
notice on Squeezebox telling me that it was scanning.

Also, really weird, during some of the stall the CD music stopped and I
got some kind of chime going, that I don't think was part of the song.
Is this some kind of alarm about stalling, or should I lay off the
sauce ;)

[slim] Re: help needed: explicit path to iTunes XML file

2006-08-02 Thread twylie

fast switching for me would be the ability to switch slimservers
(running on different machines) via the web interface, even if it
required an auto reboot of the SB3 and associated delay.

The hold down the left arrow works, but 2 of my players are in the
basment feeding a whole house audio system. Running downstairs to
switch servers is less than ideal. I read Dean's comments on the
bug/feature i found and have a little better understanding of the
complexities and security issues. I'd be all for some presets of
network/server choices and hope this might be in line with the ability
to switch in and out of squeezenetwork via the web interface. My
current setup has 2 SB3's in the basement - one pointed to my main
slimserver and a second that stays logged into squeezenetwork. This
gives me control via a laptop, touchpad, or Nokia770 from teh main
parts of the house.

I'm only going to have it scan playlists after I trim my iTunes

I suppose it could be WiFi problems not the scan. But the message

[slim] Transporter Input / Output configurations - Eliminate cost of a Pre Amp?

2006-08-02 Thread daniels5

I imagine that one of the significant enhancements in the Transporter's
function over the previous Squeezeboxes, is the ability to use the
Transporter as both a fine external DAC and as an input-selection
device.

This would allow buyers to eliminate both the cost and sonic coloration
of even excellent pre-amplifiers and get an fine external DAC in the
process (or vice versa).

It will be interesting when Sean or Dean describe how the digital
inputs / outputs and selections will work on the Transporter. I
speculate that cement is still wet as these features can probably be
accomplished in software / firmware.

Here is what I wonder about.

1) How will we be able to select, say a DVD player, that is connected
using the Transporter's Coax input? Or an SACD player connected to the
S/PDIF input?

2) Will we be able to create a soft label on the Transporter's
display to say DVD, or SACD Player or will the input selection
display have to read Coax S/PDIF etc.?

3) Will any given Transporter digital outputs be able to be selected
as a Servo Output - outputting what the Transporter is receiving from
it's ethernet ports?

4) Will any given Transporter digital output be able to be selected as
a #8220;Tape Loop#8221; type output - which is to say whatever input
is selected will be looped through this output when configured as a
Tape Loop?

I was stunned at how much better two high end systems sounded when we
removed high end pre-amps from the audio chain, to say nothing of the
savings in cash. One system cost $75K, the other $25K. The pre-amps
removed were excellent. The sound was simply more dynamic and
immediate. The proverbial veils lifted. Less is often more.

If the Transporter can turn this trick, I think potential buyers
teetering on the brink of buying will appreciate the cost savings and
immediacy of the music played through fewer devices.

Finally, I am amazed at how responsive and clever Slim Devices is
proving to be as it listens to it's customers and designed it's last
two products; A $300 entry level Network Music Player and a $2K
audiophile Network Media Player + external DAC w/ super low jitter +
Digital Pre-Amp w/ short audio paths and Jung based power supplies is a
nice year's work.

/Daniel
