[slim] Foobar 2000 query

2008-08-24 Thread liffy99

Using this to add replay gain to music tracks.
However, although I have the RG column selected in the view options, it
does not show actual RG data. If I look at the track Properties, the
info is there - just doesn't shown on the main screen.

Any ideas as to how I can get the info to appear when I load a file ?

Cheers

Is this fixed yet ? Now that I've found a number of albums (mostly

introducing clipping ???

Thanks for all the help - really feel I understand RG now.

Re: [slim] one album shows as four albums?

2008-08-24 Thread BigTony

I generally find this happens if the 'artists' tag is different for
different songs on the same LP. I first noticed this with G3, as the
artists tag is correctly naming each member of the trio, but it means
that one G3 CD comes up as 4 Albums (one for each member of the trio
and one for all three together for the encores)I bet there are three
guys in A'Ha!.

Peter,

Simpler, yes, but definitely not cheaper! In Australia, the cheapest
you can buy a new SB3 is about AUD250, RRP is AUD499!

The 'Toslink sender' arrangement has other advantages though. When I'm
ready to digitise my LP collection (those not available on CD), I can
hook up a high-quality digitiser (an old unused MD recorder) to the
turntable (part of the 'hi-fi' system upstairs) and feed its Toslink
output down to the office PC for recording to the HDD.

Re: [slim] Rescanning Media Library doesn't finish

2008-08-24 Thread Siduhe

There are a couple of things that can cause this kind of behaviour.
Antivirus software is one possibility, another is a recursive link (you
have a softlink in your Music Library folder to another part of your
Music Library that is sending the scanner into a loop) and a final
cause can be a corrupted file or piece of artwork.

The best way to track it down is to open up the scanner.log file. Go
to Settings/Status and there is a link about half way down the page -
open up 1000 lines and look for error messages, or what happens towards
the end of the scan. Any clues?

[slim] New shortcuts placed in my music folder point straight back to my music folder!

2008-08-24 Thread Ronnyjoz

Greetings

I got my Squeezebox Classic yesterday after experimenting with
SqueezeCenter and Softsqueeze for about a week or so. I understand
that if I want SqueezeCenter to find music that's not in the default
music folder it's simply a matter of creating a shortcut to the desired
location. Unfortunately this isn't working for me. Here's the
scenario:

A great deal of music files are currently stored in my Sims2\Music
folder; this is a game that won't recognise shortcuts so the files have
to be physically located there. Not a problem, you might think. Just
place a shortcut in my Music folder (which we'll call
'C:\Users\Ronny\Music' - username changed to protect the innocent) that
points to 'C:\Users\Ronny\Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2\Music'. From
these paths you'll glean that I'm using Vista: if it has a bearing I'm
using Vista Ultimate 32bit. Anyway, shortcut created: if I
double-click on it from within Windows Explorer it takes me to the
right place. Pointing Squeezecenter to 'C:\Users\Ronny\Music',
clearing the library and rescanning causes something weird to happen.
If I browse the library by 'Music Folder' my new shortcut (which we'll
call Sims Music) is not there. Instead there's a new entry called
simply Music which just points to the directory I'm already in.
Interestingly the Sample Music shortcut, created by Windows and
pointing to 'C:\Users\Public\Music\Sample Music' works fine; it's just
any new shortcuts I create that are affected.

So I created a new folder on my desktop called New Folder and created
my shortcut in there. Same thing: a link to New Folder that takes me
where I already am. If I copy the Sample Music shortcut into my new
folder, this works fine. If I create a new shortcut to
'C:\Users\Public\Music\Sample Music' it creates a link to Music,
within which is a working link to Sample Music.

Here's a sample from my scanner log if it helps decipher what's going
on.

Totally disagree. Moose is one file without an installer. It doesn't
do anyting that you don't see (adding things to your windows system
directory etc). It's like the old dos days. You want to get rid of it,
you just delete the folder that you put it in. Zip is primative?
Simple maybe and most anyone is familiar with it. I like programs that
don't add files everywhere and that you know what is what. Unless you
have trouble making a folder it's much simpler. Make a folder called
Moose. Unzip to that folder. Run moose.exe. Simple. It then makes
it's own database file in that folder to speed things up. The newest
version is very good. It's not perfect but just very good. I run it
on my laptop and my library is on an external hd connected to my
desktop. It has never been a problem. You probably need to try it
again. It has changed quite a bit from the first one I tried.

You could create a practice music folder to try it on. Just put a few
albums in it like you would like and rescan. Make sure you do a
complete rescan. That way you can try things and see if you can get it
to work. Put shortcuts pointing to your main one or create different
levels and then play around with your shortcuts. I've used this a few
times to get something right. . At least it will rescan fast and easy

Thanks for all the help - really feel I understand RG now. What is scarier
than this bug is how for some reason SC handles having
replaygain tags and Soundcheck tags from Itunes. They are basically
the same thing, just itunes version of replay gain but for some reason
someone at Slimdevices decided if you have both they should be added
together. Now for most files it just doubles the negative values as
most music has negative values. You just sit and wonder why it's so
quiet. But for the odd positive values, well you can figure it out.
I've done a couple of bug reports but can't find them. One they didn't
understand and put it with another bug about soundcheck. It wasn't the
same and had nothing to do with what I wrote. I tried again but for some
reason it didn't go through. I got tire of trying and just eliminated
all my soundcheck tags. Not happy about that as now I can't use volume
adjustment on my ipods but oh well. As far as I know it hasn't been
fixed as far as 7.1 So make sure you don't have both types of tags or
you do risk maybe speaker damage. It would be rare to have a positive
10 replay gain but if you did it would be a bad surprise to have your
volume raised by 20db if you had it very loud to begin with. :(

How are you creating the Shortcut - using the Wizard or manually?

If manually, IIRC you must to create the shortcut in the folder that
you want to link to, (C:\Users\Ronny\Documents\EA Games\The Sims
2\Music in your example) for it to work properly, then cut and paste it
to your Music folder. It's a quirk of Vista. From your description you
may well be doing this, but thought I would mention.

Otherwise, do any of the folder names have any non-Western standard

With the recent versions of Moose the only installation difficulty
that an average user might find is to open the default port (9092) in
the firewall of remote server. The days of having to edit the my.tt
file in mysql folder are long gone. Moose does not modify or replace
any the configuration files in the host computer. It is as simple as it
can get. As I mentioned before, there is plenty of room for Moose
enhacements, but installation is not one of them. As far as I can tell,
Moose is a one-man show. If Moose was in the hands of a small
development team, more enhancement could be added in a shorter period
of time.

That is very interesting to know, thanks bpa. I don't actually know the
answer to your question: I just followed the standard instuctions for
the most straightforward AlienBBC install, and I don't recall whether
that was Flac or MP3, likewise don't recall whether the fixed point
patch was included.

I will look into this some more.

Cheers,

With the recent versions of Moose the only installation difficulty
that an average user might find is to open the default port (9092) in
the firewall of remote server. The days of having to edit the my.tt
file in mysql folder are long gone. Moose does not modify or replace
any the configuration files in the host computer. It is as simple as it
can get. As I mentioned before, there is plenty of room for Moose
enhacements, but installation is not one of them. As far as I can tell,
Moose is a one-man show. If Moose was in the hands of a small
development team, more enhancement could be added in a shorter period
 of time.

I'll try it again some time and see if I like it this time. Fully agree
with the one man show bit, that's why I think it would be good if there
was an 'official alternative'. (and I still think it should self-install

I've tried all methods: right-dragging the destination folder into the
Music folder and Choosing 'Create shortcuts here'; right-clicking
inside the Music folder and using the New Shortcut wizard to browse to
the destination; copying the shortcut that does work and then editing
it to point somewhere else. I've just tried your suggestion of
creating the shortcut within the destination folder and then moving it.
None of the above work.

I have discovered something new, however. If I create a folder within
the Public folder and put music files in there, any shortcuts pointing
to that folder work fine. So it looks like another one of those
annoying and incomprehensible Vista permissions issues. Looking at the
properties for the Sims2\Music folder it doesn't look any different to
any folder that works - it has full permissions for everyone. I've
also tried making it a shared folder but that still doesn't work.

For any music files located anywhere within the 'C:\Users\Ronny'
directory, pointing a shortcut at them doesn't work. they have to be in
the folder that SqueezeCenter is pointed at.

I agree that a self installer should be in order, but at this stage of
the game, I rather have that one developer fix bugs, add more
features and enhance the client UI. The installer could/should be added

[slim] SqueezeCenter / ReadyNAS Optimization

2008-08-24 Thread electrumbrewery

Squeezebox v3
ReadyNAS Duo 500Gb
Crossover Ethernet cable connection
240Gb Music Collection.
Squeezcenter 7.0.1 for ReadyNAS
A directory scan took 16 hours.
The SqueezeCenter web interface on remote WinXP is incredibly slow.

I've hunted through these forums, and seen some scattered answers to a
few of these questions. Sorry if I repeat.

I have several questions:

1. The slim devices download page still lists 7.0.1 as the official
download for Ready NAS. Should I update my ReadyNAS to Squeezcenter
v7.1?
2. Do I need to update Perl on the ReadyNAS or anything like that?
3. For optimal responsiveness at the expense of data security which of
these should be enabled:
a. Disable full data journaling?
b. Disable journaling?
c. Optimize for OS X?
d. Enable fast CIFS writes?
e. JUMBO FRAMES

[slim] A dead VFD on an old friend

2008-08-24 Thread DrNic

Hi all,
I'm not sure if anyone can help me here, or if the founders of
Slimdevices still have any spares for good old kit!
My SB1G (manufactured March 2004) has finally given up the electrical
ghost. After some testing (out came the old AVO meter) it seems that
the VFD unit is dead. There is power getting to it, but nothing at all
on the display (not even faint glow - as others have previously seen).
I know the unit appears to work as I can see it on the network and the
optical out light is glowing. I'd like to say I was clever enough to
not have reset the device before looking into it further so I could at
least prove that audio was coming out of it! After the reset it means I
have lost all network settings. I have tried to step through the setup
process blind (removing encryption from the setup to simplify things)
but can't get it through to being seen by slimserver.
So my question:
can I still get a VFD unit spare for a SB1G? If so - how much? (is
the repair worth it?), or any other thoughts on this death of a
vintage...?!!

Thanks

Nic

PS unit previously working flawlessly - died overnight.

Re: [slim] New shortcuts placed in my music folder point straight back to my music folder!

2008-08-24 Thread Ronnyjoz

OK, if I run SqueezeCenter as a task instead of a service, it works
fine. This adds fuel to my theory that it's some kind permissions
thing.

This'll do me for now. I only ran it as a service in the first place
to take advantage of the Wake on LAN feature, which doesn't work anyway
as it turns out.

If and when they come up with a new firmware version that allows the
computer to sleep, by either disconnecting or automatically switching
to SqueezeNetwork, rather than immediately waking the PC up again, then
I might approach this problem again. In the meantime I'll manually log
in if I want to listen to my PC-based library.

Thanks for your suggestions.

[slim] art problem - ghost cover.jpg's

2008-08-24 Thread ctbarker32

Hi,

Running 7.1, multiple SB3s and new Duet. Linux sever, over 1 terabyte
of mostly FLAC rips.

I know the album art issue is long running but it can be pretty
frustrating. I have settled on using Album Art.jpg as my art name for
each directory not embedded for each album. I need the Album Art.jpg to
maintain compatibility when I transcode to portable media, etc.

I used to use cover.jpg or folder.jpg. I have entered Album Art.jpg
into the server web gui. This works well for new albums added. For
existing, albums that once were cover.jpg but are now changed to Album
Art.jpg, SC 7.1 still points to cover.jpg (the file is not there)! I
have done a full wipe and rescan. I have manually done a delete of the
folders in the Artwork Cache and nothing works! It still points to
artwork that is no longer there.

How do I fix this? Why does the full rescan not really clean the
database? I really wish this could be fixed!

Thanks.

-CB

[slim] Correct Operation of SB Controller

2008-08-24 Thread ShutterShock

As per another post, my Controller stops displaying artwork after a
period of time. Perhaps to put it more accurately, the Controller
stops displaying artwork after a number of album/podcast/internet radio
selections (i.e.: it may not be a function of time but rather a function
of the number of call-ups for artwork).

Anyway, this behavior coincided with my upgrade to SqueezeCenter 7.1.0.
I’m not attributing it to that but the undesirable behavior certainly
wasn’t present prior to the upgrade.

The only work-around I’ve been able to come up with is to power off and
then power on the Controller. This got me thinking that perhaps the
expectation is that the Controller is to be powered-down after the user
is finished with it. Up until this problem, I always left the
Controller powered on and let it fall into its sleep mode.

So, with that long-winded explanation out of the way, how do you use
your Controller? Do you power it down when you’re not using it? Was
that the way Slim Devices/Logitech intended to have the Controller used
(it’s not explicit in the manual)?

[slim] Wadia 170 iTransport vs Slimdevices Transporter - initial impressions

2008-08-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I receivd my dock yesterday and have run it in for 24 hours. Setup was
easy and it works well with my 160G iPod Classic. I am obviously using
the digital out. Cable is different type to that used in the
Transporter. Both connected to PS Audio PPP.
Sound at this stage is pretty good and more than acceptable. Directly
comparing it to the Transporter shows the Wadia to be less smooth, bit
more grain, most noticeable in mids and lower treble. Bass is similar.
Has slightly less ambience than Transporter.
Usability is poor in comparison. Wadia is far from me and obvioulsy
display is not readable. Remote can only change tracks, pause etc.
One needs to go up to the iPod and change albums etc. Transporter has
great display and very complete remote. Duet is even better in this
repect.

The unit may improve with some running in but I doubt it will be
replacing my Transporter for serious listening. Advantage is that I
can select a playlist and use it fo general listening without powering
up my laptop etc.

For those thinking of getting one, I would suggest looking at the Duet
first which should be similar to the Transporter wrt digital output.

Regards

Jose

 At present I'm using 7.2 (r22860 from 8/23). For various reasons I
skipped straight from 7.0 to 7.2. If you haven't tried doing a factory
reset of the SBC, you might also try that. For that, power it off, then
hold down the + when powering it back up.

I've done a factory reset through the SBC menu but I'll try your
approach as it may be more comprehensive in clearing the SBC out.

[slim] Controller: Doesn't stay on track!

2008-08-24 Thread forestmountain

I have both a SB3 and a Controller.

On the SB3 when selecting a track (by going all the way through the
folders on the server) I can walk from the outer folders and down to
the single track. After listening to tracks I can walk all the way back
and forth in the same path until I select another folder/track. So SB3
remembers the path and has the ability to backtrace.

This is not the case with the Controller. After playing a track I can't
backtrace say one or two folders and select and enter another album; as
my pressing back sends me all the way to the startmenu. And I now have
to remember the complete path to the album I was just listening to.

This is really annoying. Can this be corrected on the Controller?

Regards
Kent Knudsen

Am I mad, or is there a reference somewhere that it's best not to use
 it?
Really no reason not to. Maybe there is some audiophile reason but a
lot of audiophiles use it too. It's really needed for mixes. If you
listen to 1 album at a time then it's not.

No idea, it's nothing I've seen before. 50k tracks is a decent number
but there are people with more without issues. What version of SC are
you using? If it's some Gentoo specific build I'd recommend trying with
the straight 7.1 downloaded from this site.

It's 7.1.0 ... and I'd really rather find the source of the issue and
possibly lead hickinsbottoms to a fix.

I can hook up a high-quality digitiser (an old unused MD recorder) to

Toslink output down to the office PC for recording to the HDD.

Are you sure the MD unit will pass an uncompressed signal? I think
it's likely that the signal present in the digital output will have
gone through ATRAC.

(This isn't a slap at MD, which I happily used for years myself and am
sorry to see obsoleted.)

Re: [slim] one album shows as four albums?

2008-08-24 Thread tedfroop

Part of the reason I moved away from Itunes - you can edit the tags but
it will, if its set to get tags and artwork from the store, change them
back again. Just as frustrating as M$ Media player which can do the
same.

Finally fixed it with dbPoweramp and a change from ALAC to Flac.

Wish I would have read
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/BeginnersGuideToFileFormats
first.

Asking questions in the Ripping and Tagging forum is a good thing to do
to - just read the Beginners Guide Wiki first, it has been written from
experience.

Are you pressing any other buttons on the SBC after play? I just tried
doing what you described, and at the end of the track I picked up the
SBC and was right where I left off the menu. Pressing the back button
took me step-by-step back up the directory tree.

[slim] Plays each song twice?

2008-08-24 Thread mmduf

So I have more than 1000 albums that play flawlessly using iTunes as the
server for mhy SB3. But one album plays each song twice--1/1, 2/2, 3/3,
etc.

I've checked the album in iTunes and see nothing that will cause
this...there is only one album of ten songs ripped to m4p, and the tags
all match just fine. Any similar experiences? And what to do about it?

Re: [slim] Goodbye SqueezeSlave! :-)

2008-08-24 Thread maggior

I would imagine he is referring to Hi-MD, which supported
recording/playing uncompressed WAV files. The Hi-MD discs would hold 1
GB. The format was too little too late. It resolved the issue with
transferring your own personal recordings via USB to your PC.
Previously, you had to playback on the MD and record on the PC in
realtime to transfer recordings to the PC.

It's a dead format at this point - Sony no longer makes them (perhaps
they still make a professional model) and the discs are no longer
manufactured.

It was a great format, but it was too late to the game.

Re: [slim] Announcement: SqueezeCenter 7.1.0 Now Available

2008-08-24 Thread reddevil65

Hi there,

I have a Squeezebox v. 2 running on Windows XP SP2. I had purchased
this item a few months ago and have been using it with the previous
version of Squeezecentre with no problems.

However I downloaded Squeezecentre 7.1.0 and restated my pc. Since then
I have been able to access the Squeezecentre - the internet radio
stations but can't seem to get Squeezebox to work.

It keeps coming up with a message that there is no Squeezebox available
and I have restarted and reconnected the Squeezebox to my wireless
network. Once I try to restart Squeezecentre, the Squeezebox searches
for the network connection and then just shuts off by itself.

I also updated the firmware on the Squeezebox by clicking on the
brightness button on the Squeezebox remote.

Anyone has any ideas about this issue?

Thanks
