[slim] Google killing off Chromecast Audio
Sad news for fans of music streamer hardware: https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/11/google-chromecast-audio-discontinued/ I guess since the protocol is increasingly build in to a lot of audio gear they figured that there wasn't a market for something to use with older HiFi setups. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110028 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Radio Paradise: Use it or lose it.
Something like this killed the Last.fm streaming service, IIRC. Last.fm was my most listened-to service on the Squeezebox and enabled me to discover much fantastic music, which lead to me buying quite a few albums I would otherwise never even have heard of. The greed of the corporates knows no bounds, it would seem. They will end up killing their own market through squeezing every last bit of revenue out of it. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105251 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?
OK, got a regular (HDMI dongle) Chromecast and hooked it up to my Synology NAS. Installed the plugin on LMS and it works great - I can stream my music to the Chromecast and it essentially functions like a Squeezebox Receiver would. Even many streaming Tunein stations will work (but not all). And I get album art onscreen and track info, which is great. Fantastic work! I have an AV receiver/amp with HDMI inputs so I plug the Chromecast directly into one to get full digital audio on the amp. However - if I turn my TV screen off/into standby then the music cuts out. If the screen is in standby in the first place then it will be kicked into on mode before the music plays. If it's actually properly off, then the music won't play at all. Basically, in order for me to hear music from my Chromecast plugged into my amp's HDMI input, the TV must be on which isn't ideal. I see from the Google Chromecast app on my phone that when playing music via the plugin, it's using the 'Default Media Receiver' app on the Chromecast side so I guess that this behaviour is as a result of the way that system default media receiver app works. I know that other apps such as TuneIn and Bubble upnp (with their own receiver apps on the Chromecast side) will actually play without the TV being on so it certainly should be possible to get sound over HDMI without picture - is it possible to set the default receiver to do that too via a config option? Obviously with a Chromecast Audio this is going to be a non-issue but it'd be great to use the regular Chromecasts with HDMI output too, for those with HDMI amps. But aside from those niggles (related to the Default Media Receiver, not your plugin), thanks for a great add-on. It really keeps the Squeezebox/LMS ecosystem alive and gives people a chance to transition their hardware to something that will actually have streaming support into the foreseeable future. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104383 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Had some issues with clicks and pops on the analogue audio output but that turned out to be a ground loop. However, when I tried to install the 'Chromecast bridge' plugin from the list of 3rd party apps on the Settings/Plugins page of LMS, all that happens upon restarting LMS is that I see 'Chromecast bridge' in the last of 'Updated Plugins Available' at the top of the page (given as v 0.1.2.0). It's not installed in 'Active plugins' and no matter how many times I check the box and then click 'Apply' and then 'Restart Now' it just sits in the Updated Plugins box, it never installs and activates. Admittedly I am using a super-old NAS (QNAP TS-109) and LMS is at 7.7.2 which I think was the last official package update for that NAS. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104383 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Awesome - that's what I had in mind .. to let LMS simply play music stored on the server to a Chromecast as an alternative to a Squeezebox playback device. I'm getting a Chromecast Audio shortly and will be looking to test it out with your plugin. Regarding being a broker, seems to me that the real beauty of LMS was that it allowed you to integrate all your music playback through communication with a single server/interface. Being a broker for streaming services would fit in with that ethos IMO. The direct cloud-to-chromecast nature of Chromecast should make it ultimately simpler for LMS to support cloud streaming services (on genuine Chromecast hardware of course). The problem for me is that more and more streaming services have stopped running on Squeezebox hardware. Chromecast on the other hand has broad support for streaming and is likely to increase support in the future. Plus it seems that some hardware manufacturers are starting to support Chromecast protocol in their devices which would correspond to offering the functionality of SB Boom or SB Radio. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104383 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There seems to be some confusion here - I'm not talking about making a Squeezebox or LMS emulate a Chromecast. I'm talking about having the LMS software natively support Chromecasts as an output device for their audio streams of locally stored music files (as an alternative to Squeezebox hardware) and additionally, maybe to have the capability of LMS acting as the broker to point a streaming service at a Chromecast the same way you would currently do from an app that offers casting support for cloud streaming. eg. TuneIn can play on your mobile device or you can 'cast' instead in which case the cloud server sends the stream directly to the Chromecast, the mobile device isn't involved except as maybe in the role of a controller input and status display. I can't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to request the connection is set up from LMS as opposed to an app on the phone. Any copy protection etc is implemented via the connection from the cloud server to the Chromecast, no? Or is the issue that it would be tricky to get Google to allow LMS to be treated as a remote controller/display? Another example: Bubble uPnP will support sending streams from your Android phone/tablet to Chromecast - there's clearly an API that would allow you to cast media on your own device, from your own device. Or is this API only available via libraries on the Android/iOS devices? I've not heard of Chromebridge , searching doesn't throw up any relevant results. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104383 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It'd be great if LMS included support for the casting protocol that Chromecast uses as it doesn't need to just be a receiver for internet streaming - local audio streaming from your mobile device or Chrome browser is already supported so it should be possible to build in support to LMS. Codec support seems pretty strong too: https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/media ... HE-AAC, LC-AAC, MP3, Vorbis, WAV (LPCM), FLAC are supported along with up to 24bit/96kHz output. Combine that with plugins to allow LMS to initiate streams from online sources and you'd have a solid replacement for the non-standalone Squeezeboxes. There's a good chance that devices will be built that have amp and speakers like the Boom and Radio at some point in the future, assuming that the device catches on, and you have a complete replacement solution. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104383 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

For 'free' (if you have Amazon Prime) it's pretty awesome. It's not a replacement for something like Spotify or Napster in terms of available catalogue but it does have a lot of good stuff. You can also download music to your mobile device to listen to offline too, using the Amazon player app. I can't ever see it supporting Squeezebox/LMS though :-/ I'm finding myself using Bluetooth audio streaming directly from my phone or tablet to my Hifi more than listening on my Squeezebox Classic in recent times .. Still getting good use out of the Boom and Radios as they have the USP of having built in amplification and speakers but even there I could just use portable bluetooth speakers and use my mobile as the source (of course, you can install a Squeezebox player app on Android too). I'm talking about streaming from your own source to the Chromecast hardware - e.g. you can do it via an app on the phone or a Chrome browser tab. Surely the protocol to just send your own audio to the unit is open? And for internet streaming services, the cloud source talks directly to the Chromecast when it's playing so all that LMS would have to do is set up the link in the first place. Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!
Something that's really being annoying me for a year now and never seems to be fixed (even though it's the first thing I check after every app update) is that when I use the widget on my Xperia SP (Android 4.3) to start the app and connect to the server I get a load of " is now the current player" notification boxes popping up at the bottom of the screen. Aside from being incredibly annoying (the notifications keep popping up even if I go back to home screen with the home button) I think it's making my phone unstable as whenever this happens, there seems to be a greater likelihood of a crash afterwards. Starting the app directly from the main icon is fine, just a single notification. If it's already connected (i.e. I can see a icon of what's currently playing displayed inside the widget) then it's also fine even using the widget and doesn't do the dozens of notifications thing. This started about a year or so ago following an app update. Before that, it was OK. Another behaviour that changed at the same time is that the connection with the server (as shown by the widget) used to last a lot longer but now gets dropped quite quickly. This doesn't happen on my Xperia Z1 tablet using android 5.1.1 however it has recently started to do it a little (i.e. not so many notifications) on an old Samsung GT6800 running 4.1.2, which didn't previously exhibit this behaviour. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97467 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

What a bummer - Napster was the last big streaming service that I could use on the Squeezebox and now most of my hardware no longer supports it. I've now cancelled it after being subscribed for about 6 years. I remember when I was discovering new music on my Squeezeboxes with Last.fm, then adding it to my Napster library and buying it off them (back when they also sold mp3) if I liked it. Even after Last.fm went due to license issues, I could at least use internet radio to spot new artists to add to Napster for evaluation ... Now I can't even do that. For the last few releases of Orange Squeeze I've been experiencing some strange behaviour on my Xperia SP phone (Android 4.3) and to a lesser extent my Xperia Tablet Z (4.4.4): Basically, when I kick off the app via the widget, it can often stay on a black/blank screen. Then when it finally connects I get a series of notifications from the app that 'Squeezebox X is now the active player'. Could be anything from a couple up to double digit times. For each of the notifications I have to hit the back arrow to go back to the main screen (or of course hit the home icon). Launching from the actual icon gives better results, usually fewer or sometimes no messages. I think it's actually made my phone a little bit more unstable. It seems to have persisted now through a few updates. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97467 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Spotify combined with smartmix plugin makes for a fantastic random play method as well. Services like spotify and napster are about allowing you to build a music library that you stream, with a monthly subscription. They essentially are like 'renting' your music but are a great way to access a lot of music for not a lot of money. Last.fm was all about discovering new music and sharing it with other people who had similar tastes. It used to be that you could build playlists but not control exactly which songs were played but that was dropped quite a while back. What you could do was listen to a custom stream that was tailored around what you normally listen to, or a stream of stuff it reckoned you would like, or a stream built around music similar to that made by a given artist or a specified genre/tag. I can't seem to find them available anywhere, Logitech don't sell them any more. The one on my Boom sticks to the rubberised mount at the top and will stick on a kitchen fridge or my bath - very thoughtful piece of design since portable players are likely to be used in places like the kitchen or even bathroom. I just managed to find one on Amazon UK as part of the 'Squeezebox Radio Accessory Pack' so I've ordered that. It was pretty steep at £40 - which hurts since my most recent Radio was bought for £75 - but will come in handy. It was the last one though and I'm still not 100% sure that the 3rd Party vendor will actually have it when time comes to ship. If I get it, I'll probably sell on the battery pack and recoup some costs. I wouldn't mind another one however so if anyone knows a source slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100853 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] PSA: 'One Day Only' Logitech EU 30% off sale. (2013-12-10)
For anyone who gets the regular emails from Logitech about their online store, they are doing a one-day 'buy two get 30% off' sale today (10 Dec), so check your inbox/spam folder to see if you got one. You get a unique code that you apply at the checkout. You must buy two (and only two) items to get the 30% off. It's a one-time use code. Email says the offer is only open until midnight, I assume it's EU only or possibly even limited to the UK. I picked up two UE Radios (which will be immediately upgraded to Squeezebox Radio firmware) for a total of £150. £75 for a Squeezebox Radio is a pretty good deal. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100508 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Napster Not Playing
I'm not an expert but I do know that DRMed services like Napster can be tricky. In the case of Napster which I use, I needed to update the firmware on my Squeezeboxes when they changed DRM a while back. That meant a lot of messing around to get the LMS on my NAS up to date. (Firmware is automatically updated when you connect to a server, by the server). You could try connecting to mysqueezebox. com if you aren't already doing so that would update your firmware. If you are using your own lms server, make sure it's the latest version so that your firmware stays current. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98744 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It's incredibly useful and extends what you can do in terms of downloading, proxying, sharing files with friends etc. It's also the ideal platform to run the Squeezebox Server/LMS from. To be honest, I'd rather stream my music collection from my home server to my mobile device instead of using a cloud service like Google Music or Amazon, so that is my idea of a 'cloud at home'. On the other hand, I do appreciate services like Last.fm and Napster/Rhapsody/Spotify/Pandora etc and would want to see them continue to be available on my home Squeezeboxes. As far as mobile goes though, I can already get Android clients for pretty much all of them. I guess a single unified portal would have appeal though. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98467 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Replacing the functionality of mysqueezebox.com
It's inevitable that at some stage, probably in the medium term, support for this service is going to end. As I understand it, it's responsible for a lot of online streaming functionality of the Squeezebox system, even if you are running on a local server. Therefore when it goes it will probably remove the ability to use a swathe of online music services with the Squeezebox. Are there any plans underway to try to offer replacement functionality? It's not like nearly all these services don't already have a PC client so integrating something into the LMS either via a patch or plug-in should be possible, right? Personally, I use Last.fm and Napster a lot and it's easy to listen to both these services through a browser on a computer so I'm hopeful that some 'directly via the local LMS/Squeezebox server' type solution should emerge to allow me to access them on my Squeezeboxes ... slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98518 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'd be hoping for as much 'internet streaming' stuff to be shifted to the control of the user's local server as is feasible. I realise that could be tricky if the suppliers change encryption or whatever - but I reason that for the services where the suppliers can provide a web-based player that works in a platform-agnostic manner on a variety of browsers, it should be possible to implement a solution that would work on a local Squeezebox server. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98518 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Ouya Android Gmes Console for Media Streaming
It definitely has big potential as a streamer box, both Audio and Video. On the video side apparently XBMC will be supported so no worries there. For Audio/Squeezebox use there is no display (except via TV) but with the option to use a smartphone or tablet as a controller, it's not a big drawback. It's not clear if it will support the Google Play store but as it's essentially an Android box it should be quite easy to get something like Squeeze Player to work on it with a bit of 'sideloading'. In a similar manner it should also be able to support native Android apps for audio streaming services so that would futureproof against the inevitable loss of mysqueezebox.com which will likely take the ability to listen to a lot of streamed stuff with it. Seems to be quite low power consumption too - one review of the early dev units stated about 5W when playing a game so should be even lower for a less CPU intensive task. There is a fan but supposedly it is not very noisy. How that translates to the context of music listening is unsure. Maybe it won't kick in if there isn't a lot of processor activity or possibly the user could swap in their own, quieter, fan unit. US price will be $99 but I wouldn't bet on a straightforward conversion to the equivalent pound or Euro pricing. Probably closer to £99 on release in the UK I would think. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98413 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug
pablolie wrote: The key here is to define work - would the software continue to be officially worked on and thus available for new OS updates that, over time, are sure to obsolete any application frozen in time? No. However, the way I see it, for the foreseeable future it is easy to create a dedicated appliance that can run the music environment for many years. That appliance is self-contained, can stay frozen in time OS-wise with the last official LMS release (whould it come to that) and can be controlled/accessed via a web server. One copuld also use free software such as VMware Player (not an andorsement) to run an old OS and the LMS application on top of a newer machine and OS if needed (for as long as said virtualization software vendor supports the old OS, that is). So I don't worry too much. I often wonders about all of the LMS upgrades I have done over the years - where they really necessary? Why not simply stay with an old, proven version? Honestly, the only new feature I ever required ion the SBS/LMS software was support for new players or in rare cases error fixes (I don't remember which version utterly screwed up synchronization, that and making the wireless usable are the only upgrades I ever recall feeling I really needed). I think some new technology development will eventually once again yet more fundamentally change the way I listen to music. I am not *that* old, but I feel my way of listening to music (relatively high end *stereo* system in a dedicated environment) relegates me to dinosaur status. :) Very much agree. I run my main Squeezebox system with an old QNAP NAS and the endless upgrading of Slim Server/ Squeeze Center/ Squeezebox Server/ LMS/ whatever they are calling it this month has caused me many headaches. I can't say I've ever noticed any major improvements with any of the upgrades but they did frequently break the system and leave me without music, in some cases for weeks until I could get the time to figure out how to fix things. The only ones that were worthwhile were when I needed to do so to access a specific service, like when Napster was taken over by Rhapsody. Whereas the open nature of the system where you roll your own server hardware is flexible, they probably should have got something like the Squeezebox Touch with it's integral server capabilities out much earlier (only with beefier processor power). Then you could buy the Touch as the initial player and base the rest of the system around that. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

They need to drop the integral amplifier for starters. Total waste of space for most people and just adds to the cost. They also need to let people stream their own media collection from their own DLNA servers. Plus they should support third party services like Napster/Rhapsody, Spotify, Last.fm etc. And of course let people put things like a Squeezebox player app on there :-) As it is, it just looks like an expensive copy of AppleTV with some un-needed extra hardware features. slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95629 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox vs. Apple TV - Give me some arguments for keeping my Squeezeboxes
Main advantage of the Squeezebox system has to be its openness and hence flexibility on the server and client side. If you really wanted to, you can just get the server and a suitable client for free and roll your own hardware. Until recently, there were quite a good number of actual Squeezebox badged hardware options to choose from too. It's great that you don't need the device (if it's an actual branded squeezebox) connected to a TV/display to function and that they are generally pretty compact, requiring small amounts of power and totally silent. The Squeezebox Boom! is simply superb and I really regret not snapping up a spare when they were available and cheap. Against is the amount of jumping through hoops you tend to have to do, especially if you are running it on a non-mainstream platform (one of my systems is on an old QNAP NAS and it's such a pain whenever something 'breaks' due to an upgrade somewhere in the chain). Why on earth do they keep rolling out new versions of the server requiring new firmware all the time??? -- slimfast slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94223 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Napster - can't see my music library
I'm running 7.5.1 on a QNAP server though I see the same problem if I connect directly to mysqueezebox.com so I don't think it's related to the specific server hardware. Basically, although I can play all the Napster 'radio stations' and their themed playlists, my own music library is empty. I can access my music library on the PC via Napster's own website interface so it is there, it's just that my Squeezeboxes can't see it. When I originally had the problem I could see 5 or 6 artists out of probably 20-30 in the library ... so I cleared and rebuilt the whole Napster library in case there was some sort of corruption. Now I've added back in a few artists, nothing is showing on the Squeezebox at all. -- slimfast slimfast's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85550 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Great to hear you got your property back. I wouldn't worry too much about the person who stole it - 'petty theft' or not he abused the trust which his customer had for him. How many other people has he ripped off before or would he rip off in the future if he had not been caught? What a pity you had to actually do so much work yourself to get the police to take action but at least they did in the end.
