However, I don't think we need a Squeezebox/Squeezecenter for video as
existing uPnP servers are good enough for the task. The Squeezebox
system excels for audio and isn't as readily adaptable for video.

Has anyone ever thought of implementing a 'virtual soundcard' on a PC
that would simply stream its output as PCM to a Squeezebox over the
network?
Could be quite useful and surely wouldn't be that hard to do?

that supports LMS and was able to install it, Rhapsody/Napster now
running fine although LMS hogs a lot of resources on my now ageing NAS.
Package was by SL1000 and available from a link here:

It definitely has big potential as a streamer box, both Audio and Video.

I'm not an expert but I do know that DRMed services like Napster can be

For 'free' (if you have Amazon Prime) it's pretty awesome. It's not a
replacement for something like Spotify or Napster in terms of available
catalogue but it does have a lot of good stuff. You can also download
music to your mobile device to listen to offline too, using the Amazon
player app.

Something like this killed the Last.fm streaming service, IIRC. Last.fm

I guess since the protocol is increasingly build in to a lot of audio
gear they figured that there wasn't a market for something to use with
older HiFi setups.
