Actually he can use the "Trusted QSL" program (which is needed anyway
to sign the LOTW entries) to enter the contacts. It's a two-step
process in that you first need to enter the data and create ADIF file
after which you sign the file to create the .tq8 file which is then
uploaded to the LOTW web site. I used that method to enter several
years of paper logs I had from before I switched to computer
logging. Trusted QSL is freeware and is available for Windows,
Macintosh and Linux computers at .

I have sent an inquiry to ARRL Field Services to see if there is
any input on the situation.

The best as I can see, operating under the authority of an FCC
license does not allow any station is US territory to operate
beyond Extra Class privileges {on 20 Meters}. Or to operate with a
callsign outside the assigned call of the station. If the FCC has
granted authority to officials at Gitmo to assign calls, then maybe
the call is Kosher. Prefixes can be added with a slant bar, but the
operator can not choose to alter the assigned call. If I hear
anything regarding this I'll update the list.

I don't know if I missed what spurred the comment about the 3 KHz
wide SSB sigs. But, it was good to listen to 14.348 and above, hear
the DX calling cq, but no US stations answering. This was not the
case in ARRL DX this month. What most ops don't consider is that
the dial frequency is the suppressed carrier frequency. So on
twenty, a dial frequency above 13.347 puts the sig squarely outside
the ham band. Same closer than 3 KHz from the bottom of a band on
LSB. Just cause the DX is calling CQ there doesn't mean US stations
should call there!

I did find it interesting to hear KG44WW scolding US stations for
calling him out of band. Unless I learn something new about
operating from Gitmo I thought he was out of band.

That should work fine. There's even a CD designed for that purpose,
PA0R's Debian DXpedition Disk . This uses the TLF logging program and runs
from the bootable CD so it doesn't require anything to be installed
on the hard drive. It even has a CW keyer.

The reason I ask is that I had a QSO with Mike (or at least I

from his manager saying that he wasn't on 20M at that time. I can
only assume it was a pirate but am intrigued because his signals
were definately coming over the pole, arctic flutter and sounded
very genuine. Also many other stations were working him around this
time so there is going to be some feedback I'm sure. Is there any
way of getting the DX sumit print out for 19 November 14 MHZ for

I would be interested in hearing any feedback on this matter.

I checked the past spots on my DX Spider node and all the spots near

I don't see any 20 meter spots for that day. There are some 20 meter

The earlier ones showed as KH6ND/5, while the later ones were /KH5.

I have never figured out the purpose of the TB-wires category. It
appears to be there to equalize things for the guys with smaller
antennas, but if I interpret the rules correctly, with a vertical, I
have to compete against the guys with the stacked yagis (I guess I could
use that category if I stuck to 40 and below).

And "list-reply" sends only to the reflector. Oh, your mail software
doesn't support that? Sorry! Actually very few do, which is a big
shortcoming that software authors need to address. Yes, I know the
reflector can be configured to set "reply" to do this, but that is quite
contentious. It is best done in the email client software.

My $.02:

Don't trust the From address, many of the worms will forge these from an
infected system's address book (which is where they also get the To
addresses). The headers (normally hidden by your email client program)
will be a better indication, but often they only show an IP address. If
AOL uses the From line to identify the origin of spam, they are being
rather clueless (particularly if they are banning entire domains).

Read the message again. The "password" is what you add to the subject

Personally, I think that other methods, such as restricting posts to

stop any viruses) would suffice, but since Urb runs the list, the
configuration method is certainly his choice.

Gary,

Refer the postal employees to Section 372 of the International Mail
Manual, of which every post office should have a copy.

A postmark stamp should be placed in box on the IRC which says
"Empreinte de contrôle du pays d'origine (facultative)". However,
"facultative" means "optional" so a stamp is not required, although
apparently some countries may not accept it without a stamp so it is
preferable to have the IRC stamped.

Hey, it took me several months (at the age of 13) to learn enough to
pass the General test. We need to remember that we were not all born
with a detailed knowledge of electronics, particularly back in the days
before there were Bash-books and question pools to memorize and you
actually had to understand the stuff. I got my General at a time when
you needed to wait (2 years?) before you could even take the Extra test
and about then the FCC gave General licensees full privileges so there
was no real incentive to upgrade, other than personal achievement. I
finally did, but that was quite a bit later (the Extra-only CW bands
provided me with the necessary incentive).

I think a lot of those just use the zip, which can cover a large area
(not that propagation is that sensitive to small changes in location).
As I recall, Buckmaster was a bit closer than the others when I checked
a previous QTH. You can edit the listing at QRZ to put in the correct
lat/long.

I used the the Xastir APRS program with terraserver photographic maps,
zooming way in to actually pinpoint the corner of my house where the
antenna is located. Way more precision than I needed.

I guess I have mixed feelings, since I still need several of the
non-workable entities. On the other hand, there was a long period when
BY and ZA were not possible to work and I don't recall any serious
movement to remove them from the list. Maybe folks were more patient a
few years back.

I heard them about on 30 around 0700, but they were pretty weak here in
WA. They switched to 40 and were quite a bit stronger.

Check out the K7LXC/N0AX report available from www.championradio.com.
It gave the best overall score to the R8. I have a Hy-Gain AV-640 (not
tested in that report) which is quite similar to the R-8 except for not
having traps (and being less expensive). I've been pleased with its
performance on all bands from 40 to 10 meters in several months of both
casual operating and low-intensity contesting (subjective comment, but
other than the report mentioned above, this stuff usually is).

Re: [DX-CHAT] XX9C, propagation from W5, out of band contacts, etc.

2002-10-28 Thread Bob Nielsen
On 40 there were quite a few US stations transmitting out of band to
call many not-so-rare DX stations, including some who were listening
above 7150. I expect much of it was confusion.

It was frustrating to find that the only stations I could hear that I
hadn't already worked by 0200 local time were not working split,
however. It made it easy to decide to grab some shuteye.

There were quite a few DLs on 40 as well, with the WAG contest going
on. I started listening around 0600 UTC. ZL7C (quite strong in the
northwest) was working only EU for quite a while (the operator did
allow one PY to make contact). After listening for what seemed like
forever, he began working non-EU stations and I was able to jump in
around 0715.

Since they have another week there, it shouldn't be too hard to get
them if propagation holds up.
