[DX-CHAT] Digital
I took a 1st phone course from NRI back in 1965 and took two courses in electronics from the physics department at UNC at Chapel Hill in 1966 and 1967. There was some things we learned about ones and zeros back then, but that was over 40 years ago. I worked in broadcasting until 1984, but everything was analog. It seems to me that if we can put 80 minutes of high fidelity stereo music on a compact disk, a whole movie on a DVD, and three seperate channels of digital TV on one previously analog channel, we should be able to transmit high fidelity and qrm free phone signals on the ham bands. I wish one of you digital Geeks would invent something like that for amateur radio. I know CW and psk, etc is called digital, but it seems to me that someone who has more training than me could come up with something better. In a pile-up the receiver could lock on one digital signal that was the strongest. Or, you would have a spectrum like is on digipan and you could click your mouse on the signal and copy it. Why not? [DX-CHAT] call signs
When calling a station I always give my whole call in phonetics and in the report exchange I always use phonetics for my call, I have worked them all and have them all confirmed as a result of being a ham for over 50 years. This problem doesn't exist for CW or Digital.I have heard nets asking for the last two many times and I have listened as they were finally called upon and it was over 10 minutes later and it is illegal to make a transmission and let more than 10 minutes lapse before giving your ID. You may know who is talking and they may know you. But the OO's and the FCC may not know who you are. Bob Furzur, who wrote Logger 32, would run pileups from 9K2ZZ and if you gave only your last two he would only acknowledge the last two and he would never QSL or log that station. Because I give my whole call twice during an exchange with the DX, I have gotten not in the log only once or twice in my 50 plus years. I was assuming I was working the DX and it turned out to be someone else. Also, what is this lid remark of Contact doing in ham radio? A friend of mine was chastized by a couple of lids on 40M ssb for not calling in the right way by saying Contact. I cannot find anything in the ARRL's operating manual about Contact. Excuse me for my attitude this day. I probably will get an adjustment when the XYL comes home. Jim N4JA --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. I fannaly got the correct information from Wayne Mills. All you other folk left out all information I need. You only supplied part of the info. TO make this transaction: 1. go to the 706T web page. 2. under log put in your call and the chart with your Qs come up 3. Scroll to the bottom of that page and there is a chart with all your Qs 4. Fill in the QSO info for each Q. 5. Finalize the page and submit. 6. click Checkout and paypal will come up where you can make a $3.50 Donation or more which I did. 7. print your receipt. If all the info I got had all thes stepts and not have directed me to QSL and Support. I could have done this sooner. I have credit cards and a paypal account. As I said earlier I have been to the 7O6T web site, searched both QSL and Support sites, have been to the bottom of each page. At the bottom of the Support page is a Donation button I click on it and it immediately brings up my paypal account page. But dispite what one ham said to do, to send money you have to put in an email address where you want it sent and that email address has to have a paypal account. Nobody on dx-chat seems to know where I'm supposed to send money by paypal. Fred Soto gave me an email address, but paypal will not accept it. I sent UA3DX an email this morning and I have yet to get an answer. On QRZ.COM, there is a statement to send only IRC's for return postage. For me to get IRC's, my post office has to order them from our nearest regional post office. I really don't want the cards as the drawer where I keep QSLs is full. Re: [DX-CHAT] DX-PEDITIONS FOR US POOR FOLKS?
What about the rule 97.113 (a) (2) I think we are getting into a grey area here. Also, does the dx operator think we should pay for part of his vacation? After all I know of many dxpeditions to the Carribean resort Islands. With tongue in cheek, maybe the Socata Island could be thought of as a vacation spot in the Indian Ocean. There are hotels there and I'm not saying it is. It was very difficult for them to operate around the clock I am not saying they are charging for QSL's because they will eventualy put their logs on LOTW. Don't misunderstand me, I do think we SHOULD donate what we can to support a DXpedition. I just put what I said above for something to think about. Gus Browning only collected for postage after he married a rich widow and went all over the world. I knew Gus very well, but he spent all his money and died a pauper. There are hams over the world who are $$$ collectors and never send cards. While I'm on my soapbox, there are hams in certain European countries who will QRM the DX station. When 7O6T was on 15M on RTTY he worked Europe for many hours. Then he went to the JA's and Asia. Finally he asked for only NA. Then he was QRMed for several hours by a station who kept transmitting only NA NA NA continously over and over. I rotated my beam until he was nulled out. Guess what? The end of my beam element was pointing to EU!!! And I would bet a dollar or two that I know what country he was in. However, any operator has the right to set his own rules for QSL cards, etc. And the rest of us have a choice as to whether we want to abide by those terms. Let's call it free enterprise. We're beginning to sound likeI won't say it here. Steve, N4JQQ Zack Widup wrote: First off, great presentation Don! I thought it gave a great perspective of what these icebreaker DXpeditions and others to exotic places cost. Someone has to pay for them. The operators on some DXpeditions often bear a great deal of the cost themselves. I know a few people who have gotten involved in a DXpedition without knowing what it would cost them personally. They put forth an amount of money that hurt them personally financially, hoping they could get at least some of it back. Some didn't - they have not been on a DXpedition since. Live and learn, I guess. And our loss when a fine operator can't or won't go on another DXpedition. I know some of the people who were on the VP8ORK DXpedition. Some of the fees they had to pay were downright weird - and sounded exorbitant to me. But what are you going to do? Refuse to pay a fee to get your equipment out of storage? You would be in a bad position thousands of miles from home, trying to meet an expedition timetable and unable to speak the language of the country, trying to negotiate with those people. If you want the DXpedition, if you want it there for you to work, it seems only right to me that you voluntarily contribute what you can. Not that it has to be $5 per QSO, but every little bit helps. None of the DXpeditions I wished to have confirmed recently have demanded any fees for QSL'ing. But I do voluntarily send them something. I hope it helps just a little. If enough people do that, it increases the chance that they will go on another DXpedition to a rare place in a few years. And I agree - if the DXpedition so chooses to send out confirmation to contributors first, that is their choice and it doesn't mean that non-contributors are not going to get their confirmation. What about us who have limited incomes? I was preparing for retirement, but unfortunately I became disabled before I was vested in the retirement system. How are we supposed to buy our QSL's? I have a fairly good station and I have been able to work all the recent DXpeditions. I was at #66 in Zone 5 from Yemen. I got my station by being very frugal with my money. If I were able I would be glad to donate and I have donated small sums. There are those who are less fortunate than me. How are they going to buy their cards? It seems to me they think everyone is fortunate financially as the guys who go on DXpeditions. I belong to the ARRL and LOTW. It reminds me of the ham I know who told me the other day that everyone could be able to invest money so they can retire, when I know there are thousands who have more month left after the money is gone. [DX-CHAT] working DXCC on CW
Saw where Ron notarius got his 15 meter DXCC. Thought I would share my experience on working CW DXCC. I was able to copy 20 wpm on paper in 1968 when I took my Extra and had to pass a 20 wpm sending test with a straight key, but gave up on CW after that. Last year I thought it was time for me to become a real DX'er by getting my CW DXCC. I have a Vibroplex paddle and a built-in keyer in my radio, but I can't send worth a darn with it at over 15 WPM (too old, no dexterity). So I have 3 CW memory slots in my radio and I programmed each one for a qso exchange, and I can set the CW speed with my radio. In my head I can copy my call and my report to at least 45 WPM and that's all I need to make a contact. The other day, VK9GMW copied my call, sent me my call and 5nn and he was S-0 on my radio. I wasn't sure I got him because he was ripping the code out so fast and he was so weak, but that contact was in his log. Making contacts this way has increased my code receiving speed, but I still can't send with the paddle. I am posting this info to maybe encourage someone to try CW regardless of their code ability. Note this pronounciation pronounces everyE the same way-like the e in our word they. By the way most Americans misprounce the Spanish article el' meaning the'. Americans pronounce it like we say the letterL. The correct prounciation is like our word ale, because the E in Spanish is ALWAYS pronounced like the English long A. The Spanish I speak is called castillano or the Spanish from the Castile section of Spain. I can also speak the Spanish dialects spoken in Cuba, Venezuela, and Argentina. The only difference in those dialects is a slight difference in a few consonants. But in those countries the vowels are pronounced the same. [DX-CHAT] LOTW credits
I am at the top of the honor roll on phone and mixed. I thought it was high time I became a real dx-er and work them on CW. I have worked all the dx I have been able to find who use LOTW and I have worked well over 100. I have 93 LOTW CW contacts confirmed and 6 QSL's in the box for a total of 99 confirmed. All you LOTW users need to upload your logs so I can get my first CW DXCC. I don't even have Canada confirmed on CW and I worked 3 VA/VE stations who use LOTW during the RAC test a week ago. Looks like one of you would upload a log.. I even worked my first G that weekend and he hasn't uploaded his log. I can see all the LOTW users on the VE7CC cluster, because the LOTW users have a + sign in front of the call. Come on guys, upload those logs. I am not going to send you any greenstamps, because that's why I became a LOTW user. Thanks in advance, Jim N4JA --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. Re: [DX-CHAT] Radio Procedure-on phone
By my last line I meant hams as far back as I can remember. Also, one of the other terms which crept in from CB is what is your personal?. I even heard an Australian ham ask someone that question on 10 meters SSB a couple of years ago. Also we have had newbys come on a roundtable frequency trying to break in by saying QSK or CQ. I've heard both. Maybe the technician test should have one of the questions on the question pool as to the proper way to break into a QSO (another Q-signal term hi hi!). Also, in what book does it say the term break, referring to a VHF repeater, mean emergency? All of that is perfect nonsense. Re: [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook
I'll say again, you assume all dx'ers have the internet. The internet is not available for most African locations unless you live in a large African city. The same is true for South America. A lot of rural locations in the US does not have internet available-thus the FCC wants BPL. Nothing strokes the ego like seeing your call in print in a publication that you share with the other top dx'ers. Jim - Original Message - From: Tim Heger To: DX Chat Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2007 10:59 PM Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook Why not just make the Yearbook available as a .pdf file. It could easily be whatever number of pages is needed for all listings to be shown. Then anyone wanting a paper copy just needs to print it out. 73, Tim - N3XX - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: DX Chat Sent: Wednesday, July 25, 2007 11:20 AM Subject: [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook In looking back at past issues of the DXCC Yearbook, I find that the 1993 (my first year in it), the DXCC Listing was 19 pages long. The 2002 issue had 27 pages to the list. It is obvious that participation has grown quite a bit over the years, and you would think that ARRL DXCC would enjoy this and want to nurture it. DXCC Challenge is something new that they came up with and started promoting heavily around 2004. Its 12 pages replaced the DXCC listing in that issue, and the DXCC Listing has never returned. The DXCC Challenge list has now been removed and replaced by the 5 page 160M DXCC List (what do we need this for with its limited number of participants). The rest of the 32 page Yearbook contains DXpedition related articles like we get every month in How's DX. There are many DX reports that contain this kind of information and we don't need the DXCC Yearbook to just get more of it. Let Bernie do it in his column, and put the DXCC Lists back in the Yearbook. It is what the Yearbook was all about a few years ago, and it should be returned to that status. [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook
After standing out by the mailbox all night, my DXCC Yearbook finally came today. I was so looking forward to seeing my call in there for the Challenge award. I thought that was the reason we had to have all of our cards in by 12/31/06 so they would count for this years Challenge Award. This year's yearbook was the worst piece of junk I have ever seen since I have been getting the book. I promptly threw mine in the trash to be recycled. I hold DXCC Phone award number 2298 and I have been at the top of the honor roll for several years. I was ahead of K4MQG in the phone listings because I had already had BS7H confirmed from 1995. I'm sure he has caught me by now. The only thing I have to work for now is the Challenge Award and that's why I was greatly disappointed in this year's yearbook. The ARRL can save money by not sending me a yearbook next year. It is useless in it's present form. Scarboro Reef meets the criterior because the rocks are above the water level at high tide. The deleted country that has the JD prefix was only above the water level at low tide. It was submerged at high tide. That is one of the rules that governs what is a country, not whether or not you can set up a table on the rock. How is it different from Okino Torishima (aka Baldwin's folly?) Off the top of my head, there are other stupid countries, created by stupid rules. This is not meant to be all inclusive. I'm sure there are others: 4u1un 4u1itu - both for obvious reasons. Otherwise add every embassy and American Indian casino. Swains - a privately owned island becomes an instant country due to a rule change (brings up the frequently bantered topic of a few prominent DXers making countries.) [DX-CHAT] a six pack of SteppIRs
A friend of mine sent me the link below of pictures of what is claimed to be the world's largest SteppIR antenna stack. There are many pictures and the file is 11 meg., so you will need a fast connection to download it. Click on the link below and you will see why your verticals didn't snag the BS7. 73, Jim http://www.1982crew.com/PHP-Nuke/PDF/K9LTN.pdf Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
[DX-CHAT] n7yp
I live in South Carolina and N7YP who lives about 30 miles north of me worked the BS7 on both 17 and 20 SSB. But thats not the real kicker, he was running 100watts and a 135 ft dipole at 70 feet. He uses an old TS-430S Kenwood transceiver. The dipole has to be tuned through a tuner and is fed with ladder-line. He is now the big gun DXer around these parts. I listened every day and I only had propagation one day for about 2 hours on twenty meters. During that time the SSB station peaked at S-9. I missed the only opening we had on 17 meters because I was at work, so I only made one 20 meter SSB contact. I heard the 20 meter CW station loud enough to work, but the operator had to be sending 50 wpm. I can read my call and 5nn sent at 40 wpm, but not at 50wpm. I would have liked to have worked him. I have my call and report in my memory so I can send it perfectly at any speed. I am really not a CW operator, but I can manage to work most DXpeditions using 2 keys on my transceiver. My rig is a TS-2000, AL-1200 and a 3-element SteppIR at 65 feet. I am not one of the big guns, but I did get through by being there when we had propagation and by calling on the right frequency, a very important part of working DX. I did have to call him for over 1 hour to get through and I got through about 45 minutes before we lost propagation. I could hear him most days, but not well enough to have worked him again. 73 Jim Abercrombie N4JA STILL AT #1 on the DXCC Honor Roll Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

[DX-CHAT] 10 meters
I have intermittent line noise and it is loudest on 10 meters. I am telling you this to explain why I was on 10 meters. The noise is loudest pointing south toward the noisy pole. I heard several stations from MD and NJ calling CQ I called the MD station and turned the antenna toward him and lost him. I was working him by back-scatter. To make a long story short I worked other stations in TN, TX, and NC all on back-scatter. In order for these stations to hear me better, I was running my linear. When I finished talking to NC station, I had a pile-up of South American stations calling me. Before I went QRT I worked several of them. I thought this is interesting because most hams believe 10 is dead and I didn't know back-scatter occured at the sunspot minimum. Because there was a group of code free Technicians working 10 meters I found out ten meters was open. Give these code free Techs a thrill by giving them a 10 meter QSO. BTW, the line noise stayed quiet to allow me to make these contacts. Jim N4JA
[DX-CHAT] Washington, DC
Washington D.C.- It was announced today that Kellogg's and the Federal Communications Commission have signed a pact to issue Amateur Radio Licenses on specially marked boxes of Corn Flakes. In this unprecedented move the FCC believes this will not hurt amateur radio but allow all individuals to receive an amateur radio license without having to demonstrate any skills with the exception of being able to use a pair of scissors to cut out their operating permit from the breakfast cereal box. Kellogg's spokesperson commented that they were proud to have been selected by the government to be the issuer of licenses for amateur radio in the US and hope to soon make an agreement with other cereal loving countries. They also expect that will be issuing certificates of achievement for DXCF for confirmed contacts with 100 corn flakers. -- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. [DX-CHAT] TS-870
I am using a 7 year old Kenwood TS-870. I was tuning around a few days ago and found a very strong carrier at 20.000 mHz. I don't remember hearing it before. It is inside the rig and is not coming from the antenna. Antennas switched off and input grounded. Is this common to this rig or has it developed a problem? If you have an 870 please email me direct and tell me what you have found. I had this rig worked on a year or so ago and in calibrating it there is a jumper you connect to be able to hear the master oscillator and I am wondering if the person left that jumper connected. Thanks in advance for reading this. I don't know any other site I can ask this question. Jim N4JA

Re: [DX-CHAT] [Dx-qsl] DXCC application
Like another person has noted: Read the application paper where it clearly tells you how to sort the cards when you send them. I followed the directions when I sent in about 180 cards at my last submission with no problems. If you follow the directions you will have no problems. The application says you must pay extra if you send in more than 125 cards, which I payed. Re: [DX-CHAT] thanks for the replies
People say ARRL does this and does that. What you are missing is the ARRL is the members, not a seperate entity. You elect the directors which govern how the league functions, just as the US government does with it's elected representatives. If you don't like the direction the directors are taking, elect some new directors ar at least let them know how you feel about an issue. Have you ever spoken to your director? I bet most of you have never expressed your views to yours. I saw a post on here the other day saying such and such is the reason he no longer belongs to the League. How unfortunate! The League is the only organization standing up for us fighting BPL and other interests who want to own the frequencies we now have. Only a strong voice from a united front will help us keep what we now have. Look at BPL and how moneyed interests has brought the most serious threat we've had to our hobby. Yes it IS money that's doing the talking there. It's big business and lots of money with BPL and the FCC. Re: [DX-CHAT] After effects
I don't see the problem with moving the digitalsw down below 3600. Those modes are narrow-banded and don't occupy the space a phone signal does. Neither does CW. For the digital operators I would suggest they narrow up their I.F.'s to prevent them from copying adjacent signals, after all PSK only occupies 30 hZ and the other digital modes a little more. Who says the Canadians need protection from U.S. QRM (only the Canadians). We here have dealt sucessfully with QRM from each other for generations. The Canadians on many occasions in the 50's and 60's prevented expansion of our fone bands. If you don't remeber this, you haven't been a ham as long as I. Digital may be in, but fone is where it's at. [DX-CHAT] 406dx
I worked 406dx on 15 meters yesterday. This was supposed to be a big DXPedition having k8lee as the qsl manager. I want to work them on 17 meters and haven't seen them spotted today. Do any of you know what the story on them is? Jim
[DX-CHAT] kh8si log search
I see on the kh8si log search that I have one contact on 20 and 17 meters each. I also made contacts with them on 15 and 40 meters and those contacts are not in the logs. I am wondering if the entire logs have been uploaded, or I am not in the log on those bands? Actually, since their signals were so weak here on the East Coast, I made (one each) bonus contacts on both 17 and 20 meters and I have them logged six times. Jim N4JA
[DX-CHAT] Montenegro's new prefix
I notice on the spots on the cluster that Montenegro's new prefix is Z7, but YU6AO is still usinghis sameoldcall. I want the DXpedition using the call 4O6DX to come back on because his mngr is K8LEE and I will have a better chance to get a QSL. Sent YU6AO a card for a contact back in July, but as of yet no reply. I saw where a station in Sweden had gotten a card and had submitted it for DXCC. I sent $$with my card, but as you know pilfering goes on at some post offices. Jim
[DX-CHAT] Cry-Babies
I've been reading this thread about the operation of KH8SI and all I've got to say is instead of being a cry-baby, you should sharpen your DX skills. I've had no problem working them 5 times on 3 bands-all SSB. What I've noticed is callers parking on one frequency and calling over and over even while he is working somebody. I've got news for you- he's not listening on your frequency. What you need to do is listen up the band and try to find the frequency where is is answering callers. Park your VFO there and call him there. He usually will answer all he can hear on that frequency until he can no longer hear anyone there. I don't care if he said 200 to 220, He will find someone and park there on that frequency. There are some operators that move the QSX frequency after each contact, but if you listen, you will find his pattern and can anticipate where you need to call him. The secret to working DX is listen more and call less I give you the example of Martti Lane, His usual method of operation is to work the pile-up on one frequency while all the un-initiated are calling blindly. I can say this with authority because I am at the top of the honor roll on both mixed and phone. I don't have a huge station: an AL-80B and a 5-band two-element cubical quad up 65 feet. I worked all my dx using the skills mentioned above. Working the Swains Island on 17 meters yesterday was like shooting fish in a barrel. I got 'em with one call with 100 watts. You guys complaining about propagation need to realize every area of the earth has good propagation at certain times. I am recalling someone said here the South East has better propagation than the 1,2's, and 3's.. They have better propagation to the four oscar than I do, but I worked him even with 100 watts. So grow up and qwitcherbelliachin'. Jim N4JA
[DX-CHAT] steppir
I was listening to the 4O3T on 15 meters. I read somewhere that they were using Steppir antennas loaned by the NCDXA. If they were using the Steppir on 15 meters today, it speaks well of the antenna. They were the only European station I could hear. I am ordering one Monday. Jim N4JA

[DX-CHAT] fake contacts
I hope all of you worked the 3y who needed him. I have another problem. Some one worked him using my call on 40 meter cw and 80 meter ssb. I did not work him on those two band/modes.Also someone worked him on 17 meter ssb using my call. All of my legitimate qso's are there except a 15 meter cw contact that I know I made. Jim N4JA
