I think it was all a sincere but clever ruse by Elecraft to introduce this
topic right before Christmas. Keeps us all busy dreaming up things to do
and debating the merits amongst ourselves, meanwhile leaving them alone to
enjoy a couple of days off. After Christmas, they come back and pick up

which come immediately to mind concern the memories.
1) The ability to create, edit and store all K3 memory parameters
on a computer and then upload them to my K3.

First remove any connector from the DB9 that may be plugged in and
re-check the voltage at U1 pin 8.
You should not assume that U1 is the culprit (but it may be). Even
though the DC voltages at Q1 may be OK, it could be producing less
oscillation than normal because of a faulty

Are you using the audio level to control the K3 power output AND have
the power control set to 100 watts?
If so, that is what is causing your power climb. The K3 thinks you want
100 watts out since that is where the power knob is set, and the power
will climb until that level is

What is your PWR control set to? It sounds very much

Other than that negative voltage supply, the 5 volt regulator, and the
12 volt line, there is just not other places to look for a problem. The
MAX1406 just handles two RS-232 signals in this application, TXD and
RXD, so there is nothing on the board to stress the chip.

That's indeed good to know. I went ahead and cut the pins to the original
1406 so I wouldn't screw up the PC board. The 1406's are on order now.
I'll let you know how it goes when they get here.

Hi,
My K1, #2799, build was going along swimmingly until I built and installed the
KNB1 module. Some adversity must enter in to every project, I suppose, because
now my poor K1 is deaf, even after removing the K1 and re-installing capacitor
C22 that is removed when installing KNB1.
