intend to use wire antenna in a dipole fashion under the eaves of the roof, one
leg on either side of the house tilting downard at 45 degrees.

I am on vacation and using my K1. I don't have much in the way of tools and no
test equipment.
My model ( serial 02676 ) has a 4 band module.
On 40 30 and 20M bands I get a spike interference of about 4/sec in the first
15 KHz of the bands.
This does not occur on 15M. It could be an

Having a blast building the K1. I just found a mistake I thought I'd
share because maybe someone else could benefit.
On p. 29 of the instructions, it states as 6th step:
On the top and bottom sides of the board near J7 you'll find short
jumpers. Install U-shaped wires at both locations.
Are the bands really this bad or is there something wrong with my K2?

Just suddenly lost PTT on PSK for my K2/100
I have PTT with mic but not with Signalink SL-1 and Griffin USB
interface.
I wonder if anyone has experience with the SL1 whether they fail
after a year or two (mine is about a year old)
maybe it's the cable from the SL1
My K2/100 5312 started a new thing today. On PSK (my primary
mode), it hangs up after xmission...i.e., in a mute mode...no power
showing on external wattmeter and no audio. I must turn off and on
radio to get receive. QSK CW is fine.
Did I blow a diode or is this a software/interface
Lately I have noticed that the c on the display during cw receive
changes to F about every 3 sec or so.This does not happen in
u or l or r There appears to be no change in receive
performance or sound quality.
What does this signify?

I have been using my K2 for over a year now...decided to recheck
the temp cal. It doesn't seem to work. It reads 0 and no VFO adj
effect. After about 2-3 sec I hear several relays click in quick
succession...audio is much diminished ... turning the unit off and

My K2 5312 has some audio fluctuation. It tends to seem a little
soft on audio then normalizes after a few minutes.
On receive, current is 0.48 which I read as 480mA. I think this is
too high. Am I correct?
Also, the LCD does not light up as an S-meter but does light up

I was working PSK for about half an hour or less when some odd things
started happening.
I couldn't turn off XMIT through Cocoamodem so I turned the K2 off
and back on. Unplugged and replugged the ATU. Turned the Signalink
off and on. (I am using iMac and Cocoamodem thru a Griffin
As many of you know, Clifton Laboratories produced a nice panadapter
in kit form last year. It was in QEX a few months back.
Unfortunately, it was discontinued after the first run. I recently
emailed Jack Smith (of Clifton Labs) and he is working on a Z92 model
with an LCD display.
I haven't got too far in isolating it but,
I get an intermittent drop in audio...seems like a drop in
sensitivity, too. Drop outs last a few seconds and seem spaced
completely randomly.
Seems like a loss of RF to the unit.
I have two antennae (the second just installed). I may have an

Regarding solder smoke
When soldering, I used a round fluorescent lamp surrounding a large
condensing lens. Viewing all solder jobs thru this lens is a
requirement for these old eyes but it also was very effective in
blocking the fumes from going directly up my nose.

now wish to actually Transmit in digital.
The only mode I DON'T see on CocoaModem (that I know of) is MFSK.

Ever since I hard reset my K2, it doesn't behave the same way in CW.
Thanks to Don, Ron and Dave, I have fixed a few things.
I use an iMac so I bought iSpectrum from Dog Park Software in order
to more accurately set XFIL, etc. I find documentation of this
program particularly lacking.
I recently had a glitch with the ATU going out of Auto mode but
before I figured it out, I hard reset my K2.
I have since gone back and recal'd PLL and filter settings and
readjusted S-meter.
I now do not get a CW sidetone on transmit. Adjustments to St L and
St P result in muted
Can the EZ PSK interface USB be used with the K2/100? I know the
control cable cannot be a normal one.
Is this a good approach to enter the world of digital ham radio?
(My Mac has only USB input.)

I hard reset my K2 while trying to figure out why the KAT wasn't
working properly. I now know (thanks to Dave) that somehow the ATU
switched from auto setting.
Now, I have to reset / recalibrate. I re checked the 4MHz Osc
calibration, the PLL Reference Oscillator Range, the VCO test,
About a week ago I was transmitting SSB on 20M when the K2 shut
itself down unexpectedly.
I turned it back on and found no error message and all seemed well.
I now realize that I hear no relay clicks on the KAT100 when changing
bands. On 20M I now get a 2:1 SWR, whereas before, I think
I am very impressed with the K2 RCVR and DSP. I didn't really expect
much DX on 40M but usually around 11:30 pm (0330 UTC) and around 7005
KHz lots of European stations from Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine to

However, I'm cheap.
I bought a Radio Shack 20A switching supply.
I don't have a spectrum waterfall monitor but I receive signal
reports that are not just good but very good on SSB
and no negative comments on CW.

As hams age, we begin to notice that our hearing decreases in
sensitivity in the higher registers.
In a K2, one can easily change the Spot audio frequency downward to
accommodate this process.
Is it straightforward to adjust the filters so their

in there somewhere. I can't remember where I saw it. A brief review
in the reflector site was a blank. Any ideas before I proceed?
I am winding L1: 27 turns of #22 red enamel wire on a RED T50-2 core.
I get to 22 turns and the internal parts of coiled wire touch..
I.e., no room to make more turns. What am I doing wrong?

#5312. First QSO was with K4RGR on 20M. Not exactly DX from Ohio

The screws seem too short...I only get a mm or less clearance to

mic header, placed the resistor between pins 1 and 6 of the mic socket.
I have yet to do final Alignment. Will this arrangement mess up the

next two XFIL, the audio is same as 2.20. So the only XFIL shift in
audio is on XFIL 2,0.
I just discovered the Steppir Vertical on the web. An interesting
design: using a copper tape and step motor to vary the height of the
vertical element. This can be controlled directly by interface with
a transceiver.
Does anyone have experience with this antenna and the K-2? Is the

I found a similar technique that improves the ease of stripping. I
start the blob of solder on the very end of the wire, so it heats the
copper directly, then I drag the blob toward the toroid...seems to
work for me.
When soldering the toroid in, I also heat the pad a little longer
