[Elecraft] [K1] was Happy 15th Birthday to my K2!

2024-03-08 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
Petr,
I agree, the K1 is also a great lttle rig!  I built mine after very invasive
shoulder surgery many years ago.  Since I was in quite a bit of pain, on
Vicodin around the clock--and forbidden from lifting heavy weights--I thought
it would be a fun experiment to see if I could  build a fully-optioned K1 while
my faculties were so dimmed.  I cheated a little, using toroids wound by
TheToroidGuy.
Success!  And it still works FB.
After seeing Heathkit HW-8s go for $1K+ on Ebay in the past, it is no surprise
that K1s, KX1s, and eventually K2s can fetch big money.  They're all fine
performing radios to this day (not the HW-8).
-
Big congrats and I wish you many another DX and enjoyable QSOs with your K2.
My K2 #4800 is working like champ, and it is hard to beat. Just my K1 can
outperform K2 regarding the noise figure, hi.
I hope that K2 will be still available and I really miss the K1 in the offer.
The popularity of K1 is evidenced by the huge price it still commands if a
piece appears at auction or for sale somewhere.

Best regards,

[Elecraft] In Praise of the KAT500

2023-09-13 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
I love chasing DXpeditions.  For E51D, N. Cook, due to a minor injury, I found
myself "trapped" in my evil lair in far Northern California near Lake Almanor,
CN90.
Stranded with only a K3S, KPA500, and KAT500-- I could only put up a 15m
inverted V on an MFJ mast at 15ft, and a high-power Hamstick on 40m at 8ft.
Two pathetic radials.  Fortunately for me, these were up before my unplanned
dive onto cement.
My temporary QTH is down in a bowl, surrounded by high trees.  Mt. Lassen is a
mere 18 miles away by pyroclastic flow, smack-dab between me and Japan.
The Hamstick is designed for SSB, obviously, and I did not not get an an answer
from MFJ as to how much power it could take on CW.  As time in the pileup went
on, the PWR knob crept clockwise.  Never have I been so happy to have a dx op
running at 40wpm!
To my astonishment, the KAT500 loaded up the little V on 10, 12, 17, and 20m to
an SWR around 1.5, and the 40m Hamstck on 30m below 2.  UNBELIEVEABLE.  No
salted snow in sight!
Thanks to the great ears of the E51D CW ops, low local noise, plenty of time on
my hands, and the SUPERB KAT500, I worked them on 10-40M CW, and had a blast
doing it.
Thank you, Elecraft!

[Elecraft] Want to build a K2

2023-06-17 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
Yes, the KXPA100 works FB with a K2/10, and gives you the built-in 100w ATU if
installed.  You can also then hook up a larger amp on the other side of the
KXPA100 as well.
No brag, just fact.
I urge anyone thinking of building a K2 to get off the fence and order one now.
The K2 is a blast to build, and when you're done, you have a fine, elegant,
simple radio to enjoy
The writing is on the wall--supply chain problems and parts unavailability will
eventually kill the K2, and it will join the K1 and KX1 in legend.
These days, I operate my K2 as much as my K4!
One final thought that never occured to me before it happened--you may not be
physically  capable of building a K2 for all of your ham life
I'm glad I built every Elecraft kit ever offered--the best kits and best
support--what are YOU waiting for?

[Elecraft] Power glitch turns on KPA1500

2023-03-10 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
I was just monitoring 6m with my K4 on, KPA1500 off.  The AC power dropped out
for one second, then came back on.  The K4 turned off, but is apparently
undamaged.
However, when the power came back on, the KPA1500 turned itself on.  This is
disturbing, as I keep dust covers on the amp when not in use.  I'm not sure
what would have happened if I hadn't been around, and and the PS would have
been starved of air.
WOL is set to ON, but my WiFi access point has a built-in battery backup, so I
doubt that it glitched.  Amp and K4 are hard-wired to the router through a
switch.  I'm running the latest beta fw, 2.62 I think.
I don't want this to happen again, but I don't want to have to turn off the
white switch at the back of the power supply every time I leave the house,
either.  Laptop was on, but FANticipator was not running.
Thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] Vertical antennas Was: KX3 and KPA1500 compatibility

2023-03-06 Thread Eric Norris
I operated my HF-2V vertical for about 10 years with 6 radials. Then, I
added 60 more for 66 total radials. I thatched the living bejesus out of
my back lawn, stapled down the radials bolted to a DXE SS plate, and the
lawn regrew, the radials never to be seen again.

The difference was astonishing. Tonight I worked 3B7M on 40m cw on that
vertical, despite strong local noise. Admittedly, my KPA1500 was squeakin'
from the freakin' But, on other occasions, I have worked a JA stopped on
his local bridge running 5w. It's not a beam, or even a high dipole, but
verticals do work with a proper counterpoise.

ON4UN's book, Guide to Low-Band DXing, has an excellent chapter on
verticals. RIP.

[Elecraft] Tuning KAT4 into KPA1500?

2023-02-17 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
My K4 shows about a 1.8 SWR while operating into the KPA1500 on 6m.  My 6m
antenna has a flat SWR, 1.09.  But when I activate a K4 TUNE, with the ATU
engaged, the KPA1500 stops TX.  There is nothing in the K4 online manual about
forcing a tune while the amp is running.
Is there a way to do this, or alter the K4's atu settings manually?  I'd like
to keep the K4 as cool and happy as possible.

Re: [Elecraft] Power spike

2023-01-22 Thread Eric Norris
The first thing to do is run TX GN CAL. That usually stops the spikes. My
K3 #2254 began needing that every few months, and sometimes I had to run TX
GN CAL multiple times. Eventually, at Wayne's suggestion, I sent it in for
repair. They found some burned resistors in the LPA SWR circuit, which
were replaced. I haven't tested it yet, because, you know, my K4D
arrived. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 and K2

2023-01-11 Thread Eric Norris
You can do it with just an RCA cable if you have the keying mod on a K2/10,
or a K2/100. N6TV can make you a Serial box that gives you band info, too,
if you have the K2 serial interface, but I could hear the KPA1500 polling
the K2--I don't think that was a problem with the Serial Box, but I never
solved it.

DO NOT CONNECT THE K2 SERIAL OUTPUT TO ANYTHING WITHOUT A CUSTOM CABLE OR
AN N6TV SERIAL BOX.

I got about 250w out of the KPA1500 with my K2/10, and of course full-tilt
disco boogie with my K2/100.

Thank you again, Don, for these crystal-clear instructions!  I got it done,

Thanks again!

Remove the 2 black screws just to the rear of the front panel,
Then the 2 screws on the upper part of the rear panel.
There is one screw on each side panel near the top center.
Now you should be able to remove the KPA100 from the base K2. Place it
"upside down" on a box or book(s) placed just to the right of the base4
K2 (it should be about 1/2 the height of the K2).
If you are careful, you can do it without removing the cables.

You will need to remove the screws holding the KPA100 shield. Slide the
shield out from under the soldering lug located near the ANT jack.

There are 4 screws holding the PA transistors - you should be able to
snug them down about 1/8 of a turn - do not "beef" them down, just make
them snug.

Reinstall the shield, and put the KPA100 back on the K2 - Make sure all
3 of the cables are still seated properly.  Put the 6 black screws back
in and you should be good to go.

[Elecraft] Tightening K2/100 PA device screws

2022-12-27 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
Dear K2 Wizards:
I bought a K2 from a friend's (WA6OCP, SK) estate, and had a 100w lid built
into it by Dave, W8FGU) who also gave it a full checkout and realignment.  I've
now got well over 10 hours of TX time on it, and according to the manual the PA
screws need to be tightened.
My problem is I can't tell from the manual  exactly which screws to remove so I
can pry the heat sink up.  I've lost my fine motor control in my hands, so this
is going to be a bit more of an adventure than it would've been 10 years ago.
I'd also appreciate advice on which tool I'll need to tighten away (1/4" nut
driver?) and just how much to tighten.  I suspect it's the same snugness I used
on my own K2/10 back when dirt was new?
With SKN coming up quickly, I'm hoping to put this K2, and the HW-16 given to
me by my Elmer, W5NYT (SK) on the air as my tribute to them.
Thanks for any advice!

Why not use Elecraft? They just repaired my K3 in about a week, including
a phone consultation and 24-hour burn-in. It doesn't get any better.

Re: [Elecraft] RFE KPA1500 Fan Protocol

2022-09-04 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
Yes, FANticipator works great, but my point is if Elecraft would allow us to
use the 6m fan profile on HF, we wouldn't have to turn on our intrusive
computers at all to communicate in the sublime world of QRO CW.

My apologies to Larry for my error.  He is of course correct about
FANticipator's connections, he wrote the software and does a great job
supporting it.  For free.
FANticipator keeps more than 100 KPA1500s cooler and quieter, if the numbers on
Larry's dist list are mostly FANticipator users like me.
Interestingly, people have contacted me with the drastic measures they have
taken to quiet their KPA1500s, but none have gone on record supporting my
swtchable fan profile suggestion. Therefore, given Elecraft''s huge workload
these days, it will most likely never make "The List."

FANticipator does not require WiFi, merely a computer on the LAN - ethernet or
WiFi.  The only additional connection is ethernet to the KPA1500.

[Elecraft] RFE KPA1500 FAN PROFILE

2022-08-28 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
May I suggest adding a command that allows users to select the more aggressive
6m fan profile on the KPA1500 for HF use?  Call it, for example, FP6; to revert
back to the normal HF profile, say FPD.  These could then be loaded into FP1
and FP2--We could select the best profile for the current op.  6m ops are
unaffected.
Digital users would find a cooler running amp for RTTY and FT8, for example, as
well as slow-speed CW ops and K4 users pushing the fabulous CESSB feature,
which does create a hotter running KPA.
My experiments show that just running the fans at FAN1 or FAN2 do not create
sufficient airflow as the amp heats up.  Running at FAN3 keeps things cool, but
can create large swings in neatsink temps during rx periods.. It also irritates
the XYL, and makes copy more difficult, even with Radiosport, Heil, or Bose
QC-35 noise-cancelling heatsets
Likewise, experimenting with FAN DWELL did not solve the issue.
There is an external solution, FANticipator, but this requires a computer with
wifi, and a LAN connection to the KPA1500--more stuff that needs to work and be
turned on.  FANticipator does very effectively lower PA temps AND fan noise.  I
think the FP6 command will also help with noise and temps.
The advantage of implementing  my suggestion is that it does not affect KPA1500
owners who are happy with the current HF fan profile, but can help those of us
with low noise tolerance, tinnitus, or who just want a cooler KPA1500, and does
it without an external Pc.
Finally, it could be a marketing tool, since ICOM appears to be touting the PW2
as a quiet. amp.
I would be happy to beta test this, if offered, and come back with some real
numbers
Thanks for your consideration.

Re: [Elecraft] HW-16

2022-07-03 Thread Eric Norris
The HW-16 was a great rig back then, with silent QSK and a good crystal
filter.

I remember getting frustrated one night, and I cranked the PWR knob past
the red mark on the plate-current meter that showed the 75-watt Novice DC
input plate current limit. I had just turned 17, and worked 50 hrs at
$2/hr to buy that kit. I was going to get a QSO that night even though I
knew the FCC would soon be battering down my door and dragging me away in
handcuffs.

Good times.

[Elecraft] KPA1500/PS SPACING

2022-07-02 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
Gangue:
I am considering a new shack layout that would place on a single shelf, in left
to right order, KPA1500 RF DECK--HW-16--KPA1500 PS.  My question for the brain
trust is:  How much space is required between components?  The PS cannot go on
the floor at this point.  The KPA1500 and HW-16 are not being operated at the
same time, obviously.  The K4 is on a lower level and is not a factor.
The KPA1500 components will not be up on their bails.
Thoughts?  Thanks and

[Elecraft] Can't update KAT500 firmware

2021-12-14 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
I installed the latest KAT500 Utility (3x), but when I try to download the new
firmware, I get this error message:  Open connection to
ftp.elecraft.com20:52:32 FtpFindFile completed with error 0x2EE3: The
server returned extended informationInternetGetLastResponseInfo returns

Multiple attempts, rebooting the computer, waiting until the cows come
home--nothing works.  W10 computer with scads of disc space and oodles of
memory.  200Mbps internets speed.  I've updated K-line firmware a dodecazillion
times in the past 15 years and have not seen this.
Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] K1 Noise Blanker KNB1 already-built and working

2021-11-30 Thread Eric Norris
I wish I could! My vague memory is that Don Wilhelm pointed me to a couple
of mods. A search of my emails didn't find any of Don's advice prior to
2017, and I think that is about 5 years short.

I suggest you google it, and check the Nabble archives. The mods were
simple, changing a cap and perhaps a resistor value or something.

The K1 is a great little rig. I built the 2- band version, and then the
4-band filter board, with all options. It still works like a champ.

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones (Again!)

2021-11-19 Thread Eric Norris
I have used the Heil Pro 7 also. While they displayed no RFI issues, they
fall far behind the Bose QC35s, Radiosport, and even Bose QC25s in keeping
out KPA1500 fan noise. They worked FB for me in the CQWW SSB test, where
the KPA1500 fans rarely turn on, and never get louder than FAN1 at my
station, running at 1300w out per LP100A mearurement

"FWIW, I have been using Heil Pro 7 headphones successfully for years. I
use cw 95% of the time, including during quite a few enjoyable CWT events.
I only occassionally use the mic and ssb mode. I own several pair that I
use with their specific radios. I use them on my Elecraft K2, and KX2, my
Yaesu FTDX3000D, and my LNR Mountaintopper 3, 4, and 5b transceivers. I
never have the slightest RF or feedback. They are well worth buying and
using. I highly recommend them. The radios without ssb, I don’t use the
mic or mic plug but instead I keep it secured out of the way.

Help a Noob.  Bonus points for how I set rx text to something larger than

[Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS

2021-10-20 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
Dear Gang:
Xfinity, our internet provider, showed up at 7:30am this morning, to explain to
the XYL that we were being cut off for good because my amateur radio activities
had caused wide area outages.  Oddly, these wide area outages did not include
my own house.  They told her the antennas themselves--absent any power--were
the problem
The last time I was threatened, I installed chokes and opto-isolaters on our
shielded ethernet lines, and after being told they use 14Mhz as their carrier
frequency, I have stayed off 20m, only using 100w unless I'm in a rare contest.
I asked to speak to a technical guy--they gave me a number which I called, but
he never called back.
Any Ideas?  Does anyone have a contact at the ARRL, or know a communications
lawyer?  Comcast/Xfinity will be back out here at 2pm Pacific time--I'd
appreciate any help.
My XYL depends on an internet connection to work.  Being off the air is
unimaginable.
Frantic,

Re: [Elecraft] Wire antenna ends and spools?

2021-10-05 Thread Eric Norris
Use a fly fishing knot on those slippery wires to tie them to a small
insulator. My late friend Neal WA6OCP (SK) used to buy these perfect
spools he called "offshore fishing line spools." They were maybe 8" in
diameter, but very thin--perfect for winding up slick, slinky wire for
temporary QRP antennas. I have no idea where he got them

I dunno about smoke detector batts, BUT--in my extensive tests with

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 cabinet buzz

2021-05-30 Thread Eric Norris
I didn't say " a hair's width," I said "a hair," a technical term
understood by OFs as an approximation. I also didn't say "pinch the ribbon
cable," because that is not the side of the cabinet where the problem lies
in my experience.

Now, are you guys telling me there is an actual wing-nut on the KPA500
transformer hold-down bolt on modern units? If so, forget the torque
wrench and try tightening the wing-nut a hair--after following all safety
precautions outlined in the manual or my OP.

By all means refer to the original KPA500 Assembly Manual.

Good luck, pilgrim.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 cabinet buzz

2021-05-30 Thread Eric Norris
There is KPA500 buzz (normal), and KPA500 BUZZ (abnormal). I own two.

KPA Numero Uno was bought way back when, when the kits were first
available. When I first built it, it buzzed something akin to to your
teeth clacking when you notice a full-grown T. Rex is standing next to
you. At that time, many were complaining about KPA500 buzz, but one must
understand that some would complain that their K3 did not come with the
case stuffed with Krugerands. A call to Support convinced them it was
really loud. They sent me an updated bolt, washer, and spacer set. I very
carefully repositioned the transformer, and torqued the bolt to factory
spec. Several times. No buzz then, no buzz now that I can hear. I do now
have an LP-100A sitting on the top left forward of the cabinet. A perfect
fit. Perhaps that is a dampner, who knows.

KPA500 Numero Two-o was bought this year, is factory-built, and has a very
slight audible buzz on cw. These amps have compact, toroidal, linear
transformers that produce a little buzz. If it ever rises to an annoying
level, I would: 1) Turn off the amp using the front-panel switch to drain
the filter caps and let the fan run all the way down. 2) Turn off the
rear-panel switch. 3) Unlug the amp from A/C. 4. Remove the top cover as
shown in the manual. 5) Using a very strong light, see if the transformer
is touching the cabinet. 6) If so, you can SLIGHTLY. loosen the bolt
(PAY ATTENTION TO THE TIGHTNESS OF THE BOLT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TORQUE
WRENCH), and very, very carefully adjust the transformer so it is a hair
away from the cabinet on all sides. 7) Reverse the steps. Repeat if
necessary. OR Call Support. OR wear headphones. OR Fuggedaboutit.
NOTE: You can indeed make it worse. The reason you are probably hearing
it for the first time is that all amps I have owned with linear supplies
also buzz, but the constant fan masks it.

Re: [Elecraft] N6TV to the rescue

2021-04-02 Thread Eric Norris
I can not overstate how great Bob N6TV is to work with--I asked him to
create some complex stuff using S-Box and Y-boxes, he provided schematics,
hookup charts, and cables labeled at both ends for EVERYTHING, and then
spent more hours explaing everything to me. Just fantastic!

If I had seen his QSOToday presentation on Serial Ports years ago, it would
have saved me many hours of frustration learning his tips piecemeal over
the years one at a time.

Also, I have to give K6KR a shout for suggesting Gearmo port splitters to
me years ago--still in daily service here with zero hassle.

Re: [Elecraft] Where are the K4 reviews?

2021-03-30 Thread Eric Norris
Elecraft is unlike all other world-class mfrs of amateur radio
transceivers. They are very, very small. They have to be to keep their
margins big enough to compete with giants who mfr marine, aviation, and
consumer electronics. They can't get away with marketing a KX4 that puts
out ONE WATT more than a KX3 and call it ALL NEW. If an engineer's house
burns down, they can't easily slide someone else over from another
project. Same with COVID.

If you ran a company like Elecraft, would you publicize every setback when
every single employee is critical? No, you wouldn't. Either give them
more slack, and wait, or go somewhere else and buy something else. But
please stop the endless whining.

K4s are out there--I hear them on in contests.

Eric has stated they hope to clear the Group 1 backlog by the end of May.
He has also stated that K4 production will ramp up by an order of magnitude
and more.

Remember the K3 rollout? KPA1500? NO COVID. NO WILDFIRES. I just passed
my two-week vax period, and I am older than almost everybody who works at
Elecraft. Do the math.

73 Eric WD6DBM

Besides, I don't find "if you can't accept being in the dark ask for

[Elecraft] K2/100 Amp Keying Limits?

Re: [Elecraft] Mag Loop

2021-01-20 Thread Eric Norris
I built two mag loops, one with an MFJ butterfly cap, and one with a
massive 60pf bread-slicer I found on Ebay--if my calculations are correct,
the monster should take a kw of power on 20m. The MFJ capacitor is not
high quality, but it works over a wide range. However, I much prefer my
AlexLoops for portability and ease of setup--they set up on a cheap photo
tripods with the heads removed. My homebrew loops require guys because of
their size and weight. The AlexLoop sets up in less than 60 seconds, as
shown here in a video I shot near a salt-water amplifier:

[Elecraft] N6TV S-Box and Y-Box

This is an unsolicited, whole-hearted endorsement of N6TV's S-Boxes and Y-Box.
I wish I had taken a picture of the pile of wiring eliminated by my first
Y-Box.
Bob recently delivered an S-Box that allows my two K2s (with serial I/O  and
key-out options), KX2, or KX3 to be connected to a KAT/KPA500 or KPA1500.  The
playtime options are nearly endless, and I had a blast on Straight Key Night
using my K2s and HW-16.  Sadly, the chrping, whooping, drifting, and clicking
Heath HW-16 cannot be supported by the S-Box.
Thanks, Bob!

KUSI is literally fake news--there is no such entity registered with the
California Secretary of State's office, either as a corporate name, or
other business entity--in case any of you took this seriously.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500: What is it telling me?

2020-10-26 Thread Eric Norris
This seemed odd to me at first, also, but it really made sense as I was
hopping all over the place during cqww this weekend, and could tell at a
glance at kpa1500 remote or front panel what it was up to. Also, that I
had missed training a few bins...yikes.

Once you get used to it, it's the perfect solution.

[Elecraft] KDVR3 + N1MM Help Needed

I'm using macros inside N1MM logger function keys (wicked cool), to play M1
memory from the KDVR3, but no matter how I record my call on the KDVR3,
when played on an N1MM function call, I get something that sounds almost
like a squelch tail. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer

2020-10-19 Thread Eric Norris
When the KPA500 first came out, there were lots of complaints about hum.
This made it difficult for Elecraft Support to differentiate between normal
hum, which I can barely hear, to the obnoxiously loud hum of a misaligned
transformer. I finally called support so they could hear the hum of my
KPA500, which was in the obnoxious category.

Take a breath, you can fix this. Tweaking the bolt torque, and slightly
moving the transformer, requires only removing the cover. If you don't own
and can't borrow a torque wrench, given your investment--buy one. A small,
inexpensive one will do the trick as the torque is quite low.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer

2020-10-19 Thread Eric Norris
Hi Jim,

I had a bad hum from my KPA500 kit, an early model. Elecraft sent me a new
center bolt that was only threaded on the end--the original bolt had
threads all along the shaft. Also an additional pad.

Assuming you assembled it all correctly, try these two things: If you have
a torque wrench, tighten the bolt to the exact spec. If you don't have
one, try slightly tightening or even loosening the bolt. Second, make sure
the transformer is exactly centered on the bolt and not touching any of the
sheet metal, including the side panel. Use a strong flashlight to check it
with the top removed. UNPLUG THE AMP FIRST!

Mine has been hum-free for years, after the tweaking.

Re: [Elecraft] K3, k4 Black knobs

2020-10-16 Thread Eric Norris
Petzl does make dimmable red ones. However, being an old-timer, I usually
use an Orion flashlight that is very dimmable, and worn around my neck or
held between my teeth. The Petzl ones I have have to be cycled between red
and white to get to red dim, an offensive move at a star party. The best
one I have ever used was from Crazy Ed Optical, but I cannot find a
replacement bulb for it.

[Elecraft] Cover for K4, KAnything

2020-10-16 Thread Eric Norris
I have used jse-repair on ebay to make covers for the Kherd. Some are
stock, some he will make custom. I had him make custom covers for my
KPA1500 rf deck and PS. He made a single custom cover for my K3/P3 (one
cover in the dark to bind them). He will add back flaps, headphone/mic
slits, callsigns for an extra fee. He makes covers for the KAT500/KPA500
combo stack, K1, K2, and all sorts of gear (even an LP100A). I don't think
he has a K4 cover yet, but all you need is a measuring tape.

As usual, should you be caught or killed, Eric and Wayne will disavow any
knowledge of your actions-and I have no relationship with JSE-REPAIR, his
successors or assigns, and any similarity between people living, dead, or
undead, is purely coincidental.

release, or 8ms--and should I change the delay setting from 8ms in the K3S
menu?

QSK 811as!! The mind reels. Thanks for the help.

[Elecraft] AUXBUS cable question

2020-10-02 Thread Eric Norris
Can I wire a K3s to a KAT500 via AUXBUS cable, then RCA cable from KAT500
to AL-811H amplifier for PTT, and will the KAT break the PTT line if the
SWR is above the configured value in the KAT? I don't want to test this as
the AL-811H has no built-in protections.

Thanks for your help!

[Elecraft] AUXBUS CABLE Gouge

2020-09-22 Thread Eric Norris
Dear Gang:

I have several old auxbus cables, the type that is about 3/8" thick, and
has a bend radius of about 1/4 mile. Several pins are missing. The cable
clamping thumbscrews are not secured, and can float free in a zero-G
environment.

I have other AUXBUS cables that are thin, have nice ergo thumbscrews, but
are not missing any pins.

1) How many types of AUXBUS cables are there?

B) Can the AUXBUS cable that has all of it's pins be used between a K3 and
an elecraft amplifier? Between an elecraft transverter cable and AUXBUS
(assuming the specially-made-per-the-XV manual cable is in between) port
via a gazillion all straight-wired Y adapters?

I think I knew this once but no more.

Thanks.

[Elecraft] Odd K3 behavior

2020-09-20 Thread Eric Norris
My K3 #2545 has been exhibiting some very intermittent odd behavior
lately. In CW QSK mode, when I hit the paddles, it goes into tx normally,
but the receiver appears to stay muted and there is no audio, nor any
indicatio of band noise on the S-meter. It will continue to tx normally,
and the red led tx indicator goes out as expected. This can happen when
VOX is on and it is making normal power, or when VOX is off, and there is
no tx power (so not RFI).

When this happens, no amount of keyer paddling will bring it back.
However, power cycling brings it back to life, and it then functions
normally for the rest of the operating session. So far, I think, this only
happens at the beginning of an operating session from a cold start.

The rig is connected to an Elecraft amp and two transverters through an
auxbus breakout box (N6TV?), a laptop, P3, and last visited the mothership
2-3 years ago when it received all available updates save a KAT3A.

Any ideas on narrowing down the problem? Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] Seeking comments on Ham Expo from participants

2020-08-22 Thread Eric Norris
I really liked ALL of the elecraft presentations, and most of the others.
Wayne's had a particularly intimate feel to it, which was very different,
whereas Eric's was still great, just a more formal, polished approach.
Dave's journey into the classic line was very entertaining.

I am very frustrated that the K4 Q hasn't been posted. The FT units are
out there, but we still don't have any idea, really, if the K4 will be the
K400lb elephant in the room, or a really good rig that is just the K point
on a ski jump with a superb user interface. Is it worth two 7610s? Will
PureSignal become a reality soon, or a wish sandwich likeFlex? Is the
promised superb NR and NB going to happen? Why not an informal tour of a
FT unit being used? Show us the operation, not just the features.

Did I hear Eric say the control of a K4 from a tablet, promised at Dayton,
will now be done by some third party through API's provided by Elecraft?

I heard Eric say a lot of "we hope to's in re the K4's Vhf/Uhf board and
other things. I know you can't preannounce future features, but put some
sticks in the ground! Commit to a 2m board--there are many times more 2m
weak-signal ops--and big guns--than 70cm ops.

Finally, there should be a commitment to intelligent fan control for the
KPA1500 while I'm whining. Even QC25s don't quiet the RF deck fans. Other
amps do it.

I thought navigation from the virtual hanfest was terrible--at least from a
smart phone. Why make it an Adventure game? Hyperlink the list of
speakers to their presentation--forget the track rubrick. My voice has
been heard on that issue.

My 2 sheets of lettuce.

Re: [Elecraft] 20m CW + KPA1500 = Comcast Disconnect

2020-08-06 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
This begs the question:  If I "caused" the outage, how is it possible my own
internet never went out?  They claim they get a lot of complaints about
customer's internet dropping out, but don't realize I WAS THE ONE making half
those complaints!  It drops constantly, all hours of the day and night.
They haven't cut us off yet, but if they do, the Big Dog shall bark.  And bark.
And bark some more.  In the meantime, I will continue being the good neighbor,
listening most of the time, running barefoot mostly, not stomping on the
unwashed masses of ham neighbors who do not seem to return the favor, and being
kind, truthful, clean, and a revenant, or reverent, I forget.
Thanks to everyone who replied, I'll let you know how it plays out.

If so, it is almost certainly their problem.  If not, the problem is probably
in your house somewhere.  It could be their equipment (I have comcast for the
Internet, but don't use their equipment, but most people do), but, you'll have
a hard time making the case.  Many 75 ohm wiring jobs are just done poorly but
whatever cheap contractor was doing it in your neighborhood and you may need to
do some work on it.  If it is old, just run some good new RG6 and quality F
type connectors.  You could be getting into the cable through your home AC
wiring too, so make sure that you've choked those power cords too.  If it is
still happening after all of that, look into a high pass filter, I'm not sure
if those will work these days, you'll really have to get into the specs of your
cable service for that.
I don't run legal limit but I do run my HF antenna indoors, had some trouble
with my own internet connection, but never got a visit from comcast myself, my
fix was grounding the splitter where the cable came into my house, but I also
ran some new RG6 from the splitter to the cable modem and replaced the cheap F
connectors with good ones.

All during my operating time, we had no service interruption at our house.

My house is 65 yrs old, none of the outlets have grounds, not even the

Re: [Elecraft] KX-3 Powered speaker suggestions?

2020-08-04 Thread Eric Norris
For simple, small, portable-friendly speakers, I used various models of
iHome speakers (I used to carry a pair for emergencies when I gave a lot of
presentations, and they would actually fill a room albeit at a whisper
level. The "emergencies" became so frequent I began lugging my small bass
amp). Later, I switched to an AlexMic, which, although more expensive, has
beacoup audio power AND saves room cuz it's also a MIC. Also rechargeable.

Re: [Elecraft] New Antenna Works

2020-08-02 Thread Eric Norris
I agree with Joseph. I have been able to bust pileups on recent
dxpeditions such as VP8PJ, VP6R, and VP6D on 30m and 60m, even though I
don't have antennas on those bands. The SWR was 10:1 on my 80/40 vertical,
and even though I was blissfully aware of the high voltages in the tuner,
and the losses in the coax, it didn't matter. They're in the log, and my
faith in the near-magical tuning ability of the KAT50O remains
undiminished. Dance with the girl you brung.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 Antenna Tuner "Hunting"

2020-08-02 Thread Eric Norris
I had a similar issue, and received this reply from Dick Dievendorff. I
hope it helps you, as it did me. Forwarded with Dick's permission.

Hi, Eric!

There is an ATU MODE SWITCH menu setting that might influence this. With
"ALL BANDS", the ATU Mode doesn't change from band to band. If you change
the ATU Mode to BYP on one band, it should stay bypassed as you switch from
band to band.

If you have ATU MODE SWITCH set to "PER BAND" and turn the ATU to Bypass on
20 meters, then band switch to 30 meters, the ATU should return to the
last-used ATU MODE on the new (30-meter) band. That might enable the ATU on
band switch.

I did exactly what you said you did with 2.38; I set the amp to STBY, ATU
mode to BYP, turned the K3 ATU on and pressed ATU TUNE on the K3. The
amp's SWR bar shows SWR, but the amp's ATU didn't change from its bypassed
setting and it didn't start tuning.

If the KPA1500 ATU Mode is "Bypass", (ATU IN LED dark) it shouldn't start
tuning on its own. If both ATU IN and BYP are lit, that means the ATU Mode
is "IN" (meaning "ATU function enabled"), but the current ATU setting is
bypassed. Then it should change ATU settings when needed.

It's a fine point on ATU MODE bypass versus ATU MODE IN with ATU setting
currently bypassed. The ATU, when in, can set relays for a number of
inductors and capacitors. During ATU tuning it might find that "all relays
bypassed" is the best setting to choose. The ATU then uses its "bypassed"
relay settings, but the ATU MODE is still "in", meaning "ATU function
enabled".

I didn't initially show both LEDs when the ATU is both "enabled" and the
current ATU setting is "bypassed", but in Field Test it was suggested that
we indicate when the ATU is currently set to its bypassed setting. I didn't
do that in KAT500. So if the "IN" LED is lit, the ATU is not in ATU MODE
BYP, even if the ATU BYP LED is also lit.

If the amp is in Mode STBY, and the ATU is *not* bypassed, the ATU should
retune if its "ATU HiSWR" setting is on for 30 meters. The intent is that
the KPA1500's ATU should be available at 100W, with the KPA1500 in STBY,
perhaps some don't have an ATU in their exciter and can use the amp's ATU
without using the amp's PA.

If you want the amp's ATU available on 30 meters, but don't want it
retuning on its own, turn off ATU HiSWR RETUNE for 30 meters.

Hope I haven't made this more confusing... We're trying to satisfy a lot
of differing situations.

[Elecraft] K3s Modules and Parts after COVID?

2020-08-01 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
i got quite a scare tonight when I thought a W7 laptop's USB port gone rogue
had taken out two KIO3Bs.  Does Elecraft plan on keeping enough modules and
parts in stock after things return to "normal" to keep our K3s going for some
reasonable period of time?  I'm experiencing a vague sense of dread.
