[Elecraft] [K3] KREF3 External Reference Option
Any news on the External Reference Option ? 73 Trevor G0KTN Original Message from Wayne N6KR dated 14 June 2010 There appears to be more demand for this than we thought, so we're looking into it again. Note that our planned external reference implementation would not require an exact 49.38-MHz reference oscillator signal. It also doesn't require a pin-1 control voltage input on the TCXO module itself, as suggested earlier. It should work with any existing K3 TCXO, either +/- 5 or +/- 1 PPM. If you're interested, here are the details: A new REF-lock module would be designed that plugs into the small 8- pin connector near the top of the KREF3 PCB. The user's 10-MHz reference signal would be routed from the rear panel to the TMP connector on the KRE3 (this connector faces forward, into the DSP/ front panel area). A microcontroller on the REF-lock module would be clocked by the 10- MHz reference. If the signal were present, the microcontroller would continuously measure (and average) the frequency of the 49.38 MHz oscillator, obtaining a value to the nearest 1 Hz. Hysteresis would be applied to prevent hunting, so the actual accuracy spec would probably be +/- 2 Hz. This translates to about +/- 1 Hz in operating frequency on 20 m. Approximately once per second, the module would report the actual reference frequency to the K3's main MCU via a slow digital data line (labeled 100HZ on the RF and KREF3 schematics). The main MCU would use this to calibrate the REF CAL value normally entered by the user. There would be no noticeable impact on performance. If the 10 MHz external signal were not present, the user's normal REF CAL value would be used. Let me know if you have thoughts on this implementation. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] P3 question
I see from the manual that the P3 uses a specific command set to communicate with the K3, so presumably there will be no conflict with a Microham Digikeyer for instance that currently occupies the K3 RS232 port and would now be connected to the P3 pass through port. [Elecraft] K3 External Reference Option
The recent announcement about development of an external reference option for the K3 is most welcome and will allow users to obtain the best calibration possible especially for digi modes like WSPR where 1Hz accuracy is required. For anyone not quite sure about what it is, how to use it, or where to obtain the 10MHz external high stability signal here are a few links to get started. [Elecraft] K3 Line out level and Digikeyer
For digimodes like WSPR I use a Microham Digikeyer and set the K3 Line Out level to 10, which is the maximum recommended before the possibility of distortion is introduced. At this level I have to set the Digikeyer RX input control to max to obtain proper decoding etc and being at maximum leaves no room for further adjustment. I usually like to set in/out controls to around 50% but in this case it would mean setting the K3 Line Out to around 40 to be able to reduce the Digikeyer input by 50% So, is Line Out level 10 still the max before distortion/saturation of the output transformers occurs or is there any headroom. If 10 is still the number then fine, as the object is to provide the cleanest signal to the DigiKeyer soundcard even if the input does have to be set to max. 73 Trevor G0KTN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Line out level and Digikeyer
Thanks for that Joe, reassuring to know that levels higher than 10 can be accommodated without problem. as long as the AGC is set to reasonably limit audio levels. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction..revisited
As far as I'm aware there are two companies that produce this technology for the amateur market, BHI in the UK and Michels-Engineering in Germany. The german unit is designed specifically for the extraction of the speech waveform when surrounded by noise. BHI is similar but works with cw as well. Here are a couple of links to audio samples of both units in operation http://www.ing-michels.de/audio_demonstrations.html http://www.radio.bhinstrumentation.co.uk/html/demonstration.html There is a downside to using these units in that they only work with a mono input so you loose the binaural function. To get around this I purchased two of the internal modules (DX21) from Michels-Engineering and wired them to each stereo channel. This allows independent control of the noise reduction in each ear and retains the AFX/binaural function. 73 Trevor G0KTN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I didn't listen to the UK Elecraft net this morning so I'm not aware of the context, however when I started building Softrock's I encountered the familiar centre frequency spike/noise problem. This was cured completely by changing the cable between the SR and soundcard to a Maplin L44AU http://www.maplin.co.uk/ The photo on the Maplin page is not clear enough to see, but there are actually two separately screened cables, one for each channel, rather than the more common (cheap) version which has both signal cables wound together inside a single screen. The NCDSF/IARU beacons have been doing just that for years on 20 through 10 meters with transmission from up to 18 countries on a single time-shared frequency in each band. Absolutely agree - wonderful resource and one that I have been using for many years. WSPR however extends the propagation research toolbox further in not only covering bands from 2m to 160 and below but also gives the individual station instant feedback (in the database or world map plot) of where the signal is being heard using very weak signal detection techniques. As of today there are nearly 1.5 million spots in the database, 6000 of which were in the last 24hrs. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. When I did the resistance check of R1 I got around 900 ohms. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 3080 module part 1 test
Hi Don, thanks for the reply. check the green winding, it is easy to pull the leads too much and end up with a badly tinned lead. Absolutely correct - that was the problem, RF gain now restored. 73 Trevor G0KTN Original Message Trevor, An RF Gain with severely limited range is normally an indication that there is something wrong with T2 - check the toroid leads for good tinning. If you cannot see a bit of tinned lead on the toroid side of the board, it probably was not tinned close enough to the core - especially check the green winding, it is easy to pull the leads too much and end up with a badly tinned lead. 73, Don W3FPR Trevor Smithers wrote: I've just completed part 1 of the 3080 build and re-done the alignment. [Elecraft] Solder fumes
It goes without saying that Elecraft have produced an excellent piece of technology in the K3 but even in the kit form it doesn't quite have the I built it feeling like the other Elecraft products. Having said that I'm sure there is no way that the average builder could attempt something quite so complex given the amount of surface mount involved. So, does the K3 represent the end of kit building as we know it - where do we go from here. What could Elecraft offer that would be both technologically challenging (in design and for the builder) and capable of being home built with a mixture of large SMD (some pre-mounted perhaps) and normal components. How about a new design K2 ELF receiver. Station monitor scope What would you like to see next .. Those of us here that have built K1, K2, Kx1, XV's etc will know what I'm talking about - this building thing is addictive, it must be something to do with the solder fumes. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noise Reduction Recording
is this just broadband hash in my urban neighbourhood from er, broadband and wall warts etc? Yes, also known as frying bacon/eggs, atmospheric qrn, call it what you will. The cure is a separate receiving antenna. For a fairly convincing demonstration of the Wellbrook 1530 loop in action on 160 listen to this http://www.wellbrook.uk.com/G0BDE/ Personally I have never found any NR implementation (from any manufacturer) to be very effective on audio signals and completely agree with Shaun's comment one of the things with noise reduction I've found is that it tends to detract some from the original quality of the audio you're trying to weed out from all that noise as well and in many cases, apply too much and everything's in the mud. audio and all. What you really need is a method of identifying the actual ssb speech waveform, extracting the noise from it leaving the signal in the clear. There is a company in Germany that produces an outboard unit that I find very effective without the degradation in the audio. Audio demo here http://www.home.vrweb.de/michels/sound_demo.htm I use a pair of their DX-21 kit modules and feed the left/right stereo output into each one so I get independent NR control of each channel. There is an Eham review here http://www.eham.net/reviews/review/43017 By using a pair I also retain the audio fx and binaural I-Q. You would need to contact the company about the availability of the DX21 modules as I see they are no longer shown on the site. I find the combination of a receiving antenna (I use a rotatable 1530 loop) and the outboard noise reduction very effective on 80/160 grey line SSB weak signal work for instance. Anyway, something to think about. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] KPA100 SSB power control
Thanks for the reply Don, much appreciated. Just to clarify, I built up the amp last year but never got around to installing it. So around December 06 I obtained the upgrade kit and installed that as well and that's how things stand at the moment. However your reply and mention of the new C31 had me looking around the Elecraft site and I see that there is an errata dated 4 December 06 which stresses the importance of changing R19 R20 even though the correct values may already be installed - needless to say when I did the upgrade I followed the original instructions which basically says (on page 4) if the correct value components are already installed go to the next section. So, the upshot is, that I need to strip down the amp, replace R19 20 with the low inductance type, check the other components in accordance with the latest errata and install a new C31. At which point I should be in a position to check out the amp properly. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KPA100 SSB power control
I have just installed a recently constructed KPA100 (including the latest upgrades) and appear to have run into the erratic power control problem. Using Tune + Display and an external LP100 meter, if I request 5w I get 5w out. Increasing power to 11w so as to engage the pa I also get 11w out - so all seems fine. Switching to SSB, and speaking steadily into the mic, at a requested 5w I get approximately 5-7w out on each band. However increasing the power to 11w I get the following: 80m Req 11 Get 45 40m Req 11 Get 80 20m Req 11 Get 25 15m Req 11 Get 30 10m Req 11 Get 20 Reading back through the archive I see that others have encountered the same problem but cannot see a definitive answer to the problem. Anyone have any thoughts as to where to start looking. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] XV-50 and Callsign software
I've recently been talking to Mike, WA1EYP at Callsign software about including support for the XV-50 transverter in the K2 Ham Station Extreme control software www.callsignsoftware.com His reply is copied (with permission) below and basically says that he would be quite happy to include the XV-50 (and no doubt others in the range) if I could let him know of any special commands required other than just including the new frequency range in the band database. As I'm not a programmer I don't really know what's required so thought it would be a good idea to post on the list to see if the experts here can offer advise and suggestions. Mike can be contacted direct at mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] 73 Trevor G0KTN Original message: With our K2 software we anticipated new bands with a band database. We permit the construction of custom bands as long as the radio physically supports that band. The user enters frequency range, band label (i.e. 20 m) , and scale color. Custom bands are like normal bands but are setup by the user. I have not been able to get programming info on the xverters. However if they do not require any special commands in the software other than going to their frequency range then they can easily be added. So if you can confirm to us whether there are any special commands that we must use to use the transverter we would appreciate it. If there are no special commands required, on our next release we can simply add the 6 meter band to our band database as we did with the 5MHz band. Our current release does not have the 6 meter band in the band database. Band functions are blocked on frequencies outside of the band database. [Elecraft] Re: KPA100 K3 relay
First of all, thanks to all those that offered advice - much appreciated. Well, after much deliberation (reading this mail archive Eham reviews etc) I decided to put away the solder wick and purchase a Hakko 808. I tried it out on some discarded pcb's ( where I had previously used solder wick) and all I can say is that its probably the best tool purchase I've made. Full of confidence I tackled the K3 relay and a few seconds later it came away from the board as clean as you like - wonderful!! Its expensive to buy in the UK, and if you're a careful builder it might not see a lot of immediate use, but for those occasions when mistakes do occur or you need to rework the K2 to install mods etc it looks like being invaluable. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
