[EVDL] Supercaps in EVs

A surplus house I occasionally buy from is offering these 2600 farad

They claim they are used in "electric cars, trains, electric streetcars,
satellites, truck engines, etc." and that they have a retail price of
$80 each.

Frankly, I've never seen a capacitor like this used in such
applications. So I'm curious; has anyone else? I can imagine 6 of them
being used in series to replace a 12v battery, but at over $200 that
hardly seems practical.

Liebherr and Designwerk have developed an emissions-free, electric mixer

In 2016 Liebherr sold their 90,000 truck based cement mixer. They operate
worldwide, so their start with this technology could be a good first step.
They also work with a lot of ICE equipment so there are hints of developing
those types of fuels as well. I would like to see one day an electric
garbage truck for metropolitan areas (short range needed) that is silent,
clean and efficient. Wouldn't it be great to see a refuse company deadening
the sound from bins and trash cans because the truck is so silent. Paded
pickup arms to stop the noise. Off topic, I'm getting old, etc. etc.

Re: [EVDL] Ego vs Greenworks?

2020-06-25 Thread Lee Hart via EV
I've never owned a gas mower. I used a rotary push mower for years, then
a "Rally" corded electric mower. I used it with a cord for 5-6 years,
then added a 120v pack of Gates lead-acid "D" cells to make it cordless,
and used it another 5-6 years that way. In fact, I still have some of
those Gates "D" cells that are still usable (now ~25 years old)!

I then got an Electrak riding mower (actually a New Idea E-8 version),
and later a GE Electrak G-10.

Then I got lazy, and got a Robomower 850. It worked well for 5-6 years,
but it was a pain to keep the "border fence" wire intact. Then it broke
down, and the company that made it went out of business. I need to
"hack" into it and figure out how to fix it.

I'm currently using a Black-and-Decker 36v mower. It's cheap and has
broken down several times, but so far I've been able to fix it. The
charger was junk (a battery "serial killer"), so now I use a good 12v
charger, and charge each of its 12 lead-acid batteries individually. The
current batteries are now 6 years old and still going.

Yeah, that costs extra.

If you want instructions for this cheap stuff, you buy the same cheap stuff
from an importer in the West. If you've chosen well, the seller will have
written up reasonably clear instructions. He'll mark up the product to pay
himself for his time. Wouldn't you?

If you're REALLY lucky, maybe he'll even let you call or email with
questions. That might cost still more, heaven forbid.

Sometimes you can find somebody in a web forum who's figured one of these
direct-from-the-sweatshop cheapies out. The time to look for that is BEFORE
you buy. And then you may or may not be able to get the same gadget the
online guy documented. Turnover of these Chinese manufacturers can be
quick, and the regularly re-engineer them to make them cheaper and more
profitable to build.

All this messing around takes time. How much is your time worth? Did you
save enough on the BMS's price to pay for that time?

Re: [EVDL] Supercaps in EVs

2020-06-25 Thread EVDL Administrator via EV
In the early 2000s, Solectria (RIP) used supercaps experimentally as current
levelers in EVs. They hoped to get more range out of lead batteries.

The idea worked, to a degree, but the caps' rapid voltage fall meant they
needed a DC:DC converter, and its (in)efficiency was a problem. Also, the
range improvement was highly dependent on how the vehicle was driven.

http://www.evdl.org/docs/supercap_leveler.pdf

The report linked above doesn't discuss the system's cost, but IIRC it was
pretty high for the small amount of benefit it returned. Adding another
module or two to the battery would have probably accomplished more for less
cost. But they couldn't have gotten a grant for that. :-)
