I've seen them used mostly in buses for short term regen purposes (they can absorb lots of power very quickly from a heavy vehicle stopping, and then release it back out to accelerate back up to speedmore so than a battery pack) Jay On 6/25/20 2:10 PM, Lee Hart via EV wrote: A surplus house I occasionally buy from is offering these 2600 farad 2.6v "boostcaps" for $36. https://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G24932&utm_source=Goldmine&utm_campaign=9211b9afc8-MAY23-2014_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_15cb8e0368-9211b9afc8-60186738 They claim they are used in "electric cars, trains, electric streetcars, satellites, truck engines, etc." and that they have a retail price of $80 each. Re: [EVDL] Supercaps in EVs
In the early 2000s, Solectria (RIP) used supercaps experimentally as current levelers in EVs. They hoped to get more range out of lead batteries. The idea worked, to a degree, but the caps' rapid voltage fall meant they needed a DC:DC converter, and its (in)efficiency was a problem. Also, the range improvement was highly dependent on how the vehicle was driven. http://www.evdl.org/docs/supercap_leveler.pdf The report linked above doesn't discuss the system's cost, but IIRC it was pretty high for the small amount of benefit it returned. Adding another module or two to the battery would have probably accomplished more for less cost. But they couldn't have gotten a grant for that. :-) David Roden, EVDL moderator & general lackey To reach me, don't reply to this message; I won't get it. Re: [EVDL] Ego vs Greenworks?
I've never owned a gas mower. I used a rotary push mower for years, then a "Rally" corded electric mower. I used it with a cord for 5-6 years, then added a 120v pack of Gates lead-acid "D" cells to make it cordless, and used it another 5-6 years that way. In fact, I still have some of those Gates "D" cells that are still usable (now ~25 years old)! I then got an Electrak riding mower (actually a New Idea E-8 version), and later a GE Electrak G-10. Then I got lazy, and got a Robomower 850. It worked well for 5-6 years, but it was a pain to keep the "border fence" wire intact. Then it broke down, and the company that made it went out of business. I need to "hack" into it and figure out how to fix it. I'm currently using a Black-and-Decker 36v mower. It's cheap and has broken down several times, but so far I've been able to fix it. The charger was junk (a battery "serial killer"), so now I use a good 12v charger, and charge each of its 12 lead-acid batteries individually. The current batteries are now 6 years old and still going.
