Hi, Beckie - I have my own idea for what is a typical course -- it is not the kitties who have a major, identifiable problem, such as lymphoma or anemia. It is the ones who seem generally fine and then just begin to go downhill -- lose weight, become lethargic - and continue to go downhill.

Look at his gums and see if they're white rather than pink. That means anemia. Might talk to the vet about that. Is he breathing heavily? I've had several go from mediatinal lymphoma, and they collect fluid in the chest cavity, causing breathing problems. Those are the only two ways

I would have to say, contacting the disease later in life would be better( I know, poor chioce of words). Older cats have stronger immune systems, plus kittens still have to go through the surgery of being spayed / neuter, which is stressful on them. I have heard that lots of fiv+ kittens
