Re: [Felvtalk] I think my girl kitty is pregnant...will the kittens be FeLV+??
We rescued one mom with 4 kittens. All were FeLV+. It was heartbreaking watching them slowly die off. The mom and 2 kittens died early on but two kittens lived to age 1 and then died excruciating deaths. It was costly and we couldn't find homes. Hard enough to find homes for healthy ones. My decision would be to spay/abort. I put the mommy's first since they already have life. The rescue that I work with (I foster kittens when we come across them TNR'ing) does not adopt out intact kittens. Which unfortunatly is the only way to ensure that a cat will be S/N' d these days. I wonder if you could spay her before you neuter him. The earlier the better for her sake. Putting him off, since she is already pregnant, shouldn't be an issue. Re: [Felvtalk] I think my girl kitty is pregnant...will the kittens be FeLV+??
I realize its a very personal decision and a very hard one to make. But I volunteer with a couple of shelters and I post pictures of the kittens they get and its just as hard to have to take them off the picture site because they didn't make it! You can't just "try" to find them homes--you have to be willing to keep them if you can't. And if they are born FELV+, you will likely not be able to place any of them. And you will need to be prepared to meet all their vet and feeding and supplement needs. The other consideration is the mom--FELV, maybe not too old--you're talking a very high risk pregnancy here. Ash is getting fixed on the 28th and Isobel is getting fixed after that. I've had to save up the money for both surgeries, that's why they weren't fixed sooner. Honestly, with Ash's physical problems (not being able to stand and walk properly), I didn't think he'd be able to mount her and successfully impregnate her. When I have rescued litters I separate the males and females to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Isobel and her kittens, if pregnant, have been so unnecessarily exposed and she, so unnecessarily pregnant. I would see if the vet will abort her pregnancy. This will likely cause greater risk to her if she is now also positive but, imho, better that than have the kittens born to an unknown future since you won't be keeping them. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jennifer Sent: Monday, August 11, 2008 7:48 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: [Felvtalk] I think my girl kitty is pregnant...will the kittens be FeLV+?? and the only possible father is my FeLV+ kitty, Ash. The kitten season has been particulary bad this summer in Jersey (and probably elsewhere) so if you can't keep them they would have a VERY bleak future. I live in central Jersey and if you're not too far from Toms River (don't know how far south you are) you can take her to a clinic there that does low cost S/N. We take all the ferals we can TNR there, and they have no problem doing spay-aborts. You actually have to go through ABC (Animal Birth Control) which is a group based in Bayville (I believe) NJ, they will give you a voucher or number that will entitle you to a low cost S/N. Re: [Felvtalk] my Cole, help!
A couple of times, my Tucson sort of started turning her nose up at food. Both times, vet found she had very LOW white blood count. He did a series of immune-regulin shots and she bounced back pretty quickly. In the meantime, I'd try giving Cole anything he might eat--people food like cold cuts, yogurt, chicken, tuna fish, etc. A few days of not the most nutritious food won't hurt in the long run. You can also try baby food (without onion in it). Thinking good thought for Cole! Hi Kim, I am so sorry that Cole is sick, have you tried feeding him some people food? When my guys stop eating I try everything, like deli turkey, boiled chicken, canned tuna, baby food is usually a hit to get them started eating again. Try not to worry too-too much until you see the vet and get his opinion on Cole, hopefully this is just a little bug in his system. Hi Kim, Sorry to hear your Cole isn't feeling well. Make sure the vet checks him for anemia, get copies of the blood work and post what his HCT/PVC is. Jennifer, I know how bad you must be feeling now, and I know what it's like to not have enough money to go around, and I know what it's like to make a bad judgment call. Obviously you should have made it a priority to have *somebody* fixed since unfixed cats living together WILL do what comes naturally. Preferably both of them should have been fixed, but I know Ash's FeLV status is a factor. I join in the plea to have Isobel aborted if at all possible. Even if by some miracle the kittens were born healthy, there are so, so many heartbreakingly unwanted kittens in the world already. And the thing is, if they're born, sick or well they're your responsibility. If you can't personally keep them, you will be faced with the same agonizing decision as you are now, except that they will be warm little creatures you can hold in your hand and it will be much, much worse. Sorry you're going through this. Hugs to you and Isobel and Ash. Re: [Felvtalk] my Cole, help!
Kim, I am so sorry for what you are going through with your Cole. We had to put our old guy to rest last Thursday and had lost our young cat to leukemia in March after owning him for only month. It's been such heartbreak around here. Your Cole is way to young to leave for a healthy cat but you have managed to do what I only wish I could have done, keep him as long as you have. That is wonderful that he has had a loving life this long. You will have to make the decision for him. It's the hardest thing you'll probably ever have to do but you must because he can't. You've been with him a long time and will know when he is ready. I do not want to sound discouraging here, but you need to decide how far you want to take this, financially and emotionally. I personally will never again subject a sick cat to the constant vet visits, the myriad of medications and the horrendous expenses incurred. I have nothing but guilt left from losing our little Himilayan. The blood work was grave yet we continued to have fluid drained from his lungs because he couldn't breath, give him medications that served no purpose at his stage and all in all created an almost unbearable situation for all of us. Unfortunately only you can make this decision but trust your instincts, have a talk with Cole. That's what we did with Len. We bawled our heads off when he took his last breath but we know we did the right thing. Thoughts and prayers with you. Re: [Felvtalk] I think my girl kitty is pregnant...will the kittens beFeLV+??
And the life they lead before they are killed is rough. They are surrounded by awful noises, cold bars..and may or may not have a gentle death at the hands of people who cannot afford to love them. [Felvtalk] my Cole, help!
I am afraid I am on the verge of losing my loved and adored kitty, Cole. I have had him for 6 1/2 years and we have had our ups and downs with some illnesses but nothing a little TLC and medicine couldn't handle. I got Cole when he was 5 months old from the Humane Society and about a week after adopting him I found out he was feline leukemia positive. The Humane Society said they would take him back and give me a "new" kitty. By that point my heart was completely in love with him and there was no turning back, I had to meet this challenge with strength and do all I had to take care of him. Up until this point I knew that he would make it through all of the colds, pneumonia's, gastro-intestinal issues, but now I am not sure anymore. He is not acting like he would normally when he is sick..no sneezing, coughing, breathing difficulties, or diarrhea. He just lays around all the time, doesnt seem to be eating much or drinking much. Wet food doesnt even make him happy! I have noticed that he is losing weight as well. I have an appointment with the vet today to get him checked out but I am scared that this will just be the beginning of the end. I am unsure of how far to let him go. I don't know if I should keep treating everything or if I should give up? The last thing I would ever want to do is prolong his life and make him suffer more just so I could have more time with him. Does anyone have any words of advice? I am new to this posting and I am afraid of losing one of the most important things in my life and I am not sure how to even go about dealing with any of it! Re: [Felvtalk] I think my girl kitty is pregnant...will the kittens beFeLV+??
Even with "negative" kittens, unless you find a strictly "no kill" shelter and keep them yourself until they are 8 weeks, they'd probably be put to sleep anyway without even being tested...and even a no-kill shelter will euthanize the positives. I know it sounds sad to terminate but unless you will keep them yourself...the one thing sadder than the idea of termination is if you go to your local AS/AC agency and see all of the sweet, friendly, beautiful Mom & full litters of kittens who are being put to sleep--positive or negative. My vet feels that kittens should be at least 3 months in order to get results you can depend upon. - Original Message - From: "Marylyn" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 4:46 AM Subject: [Felvtalk] testing kittens > > Dixie Louise was grown when she came into my life. [Felvtalk] testing kittens
Dixie Louise was grown when she came into my life. As you know, she left on June 12. On July 14 and 30 two young kittens (ferals) came into my life. Obviously I want to get them tested. The results make no difference in their futures. They will be indoor, cared for cats all their days. I do want to get them tested at some point. The question is how old should they be to get reliable results? I have never raised kittens. I was always able to find homes for them and I kept older cats. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
