[Felvtalk] yearly vaccinations for FeLv+ cats
It's time for the General's yearly checkup. I've had him for 2 years. He's had a rabies shot and a calici virus shot and FVRCP booster when I got him and then the next year as well. I'm not a big vaccination person, I no longer allow my dog to be vaccinated. This cat was a stray, and he is now a 100% indoor cat. I'm thinking I should ask the vet to titer him. Re: [Felvtalk] Charlotte is going back to the vet tommorrow
I'm certainly not a vet, so maybe this is overkill, but I'm very cautious about carrying disease/germs etc. when I come back from the shelter (I volunteer there) I am afraid, not that I'll infect anyone there, but that my FeLV+ boy will pick up some germ from there. So I don't take him there and I literally take off my shoes at the door of my house, and immediately go to the bathroom and take off all my clothes and take a shower when I come in the door just in case I have anything on me that he might get. I then spray down my shoes with lysol before I bring them in. I put the clothes in the hamper and wash them before I wear them again. I'm a regular volunteer. I may be carrying it too far but i am scared that I'll bring something home to either the cat or the dog who has chronic erlichiosis. Sidney ** Big savings on Dell XPS Laptops and Desktops! [Felvtalk] ok, interferon question here
My guy is a very big (15.5 lb) FeLV+. he's supposed to be taking interferon on a week and off a week. It has gotten to the point that now after about 3 days on, he seems to feel bad, he curls up and won't leave the bed all day and won't eat. I stop the interferon and he's good to go again within 24 hours. My vet just insists that there's no corrolation. I'm fairly new at this cat thing since he's only lived with me for 2 years and I have ZERO cat experience prior to that time. But I swear there's a corrolation. Do I stop the interferon or do I keep on? BTW I just started giving him vetricine as my dog is on that for her immune issues (the cat vet (who is a cat specialist) doesn't know about that :-) and I now have the cat on the lysine powder , that comes from the vet, all the time as he would have runny eyes and sneezing and I'd give it, then he'd clear up and the vet would say stop, and then he'd start again. So now I just leave him on it (vet doesn't know that either :-) my vet bills ran so high last year that I am trying to do a few things for myself rather than taking him in every time he sneezes or doesn't eat. So anyone have any similar experience with interferon? Sidney and the General ** Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make dinner for $10 or less. But if the cat is FeLV+ the shelter won't take a surrender.? It's the strays that are found that are FeLV+ that are euthanized. I am hoping to change that thought process, at least delay it a bit.? My guy was a stray. I'd NEVER had a cat before.? I ended up keeping my guy, who I now can't imagine being without, because I couldn't find a no kill shelter who would accept him.? I had a hard time finding a place to even board him until I found a cat only vet who now is his vet and where I board him when I have to go out of town.? The shelter where I volunteer is a no kill shelter unless the cat tests positive for Feline Leukemia or Feline Aids. If they do, they are immediately euthanized. That day. ?? What I'd like to do is to convince them to give me a few days to see if I can find anyone who will adopt these cats before they are killed.? I understand the theory of the shelter. And I know that in some cases you can test a cat, have it test positive, and then test it again in a few weeks and have it test negative. ? This is a small new shelter and they may be amenable to discussion.? And since I had a vet tell me that I should have this cat euthanized when I took him in to be neutered, I guess it's a particularly sore spot with me.? Sidney and the General -Original Message- From: patricia.a.elk...@gsk.com To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Mon, 23 Mar 2009 8:24 am Subject: [Felvtalk] Euthanizing FELV+ cats in shelters With respect to the general practice of euthanizing FELV+ cats in shelters, having fostered many cats from a big city shelter that of course was underfunded and understaffed, I can say that in my city it is impossible to find foster homes, never mind adoptive homes, for all that test positive. Very young kittens cannot be tested reliably and of course, the need for foster homes for the littlest babies is great. When fosterers finally test those kittens and find out that one or more is positive, there are really only a couple of options. That home can keep the kitten sequestered if possible for retesting when older or take it back to be euthanized. Then what happens if the kitten retests positive? Or what about the older cat that is infected shortly before it gets into the shelter and tests negative when going to a foster home but if actually carrying the virus? In my case, I ended up with 3 positive one year olds along with my adult cats who are vaccinated. I have decided to no longer foster any other cats because, outside of the logistics of separating which would be too hard in my situation, I don't want to introduce a new stressor in the house that might trigger the FELV to become active in these positive ones. My answer is to care for these positives for the rest of their lives. However, I fostered and found adoptive homes for > 100 kittens and cats in the last two years but now, because I am hospicing these 3 cats, it is fair to say that a good number of cats will die in the next two years as the kill rate is significant here. It is a really painful fact that I could save the lives of many more than three cats if I put these FELV+ cats down. Therefore, because healthy happy well adjusted wonderful pet cats are put down every single day of the year in my city and probably most other big cities, I think that a policy of euthanizing cats that test positive for an incurable illness before euthanizing healthy adoptable cats makes sense. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Hi Sidney The General sounds like a fabulous cat. It is great that he persisted. Are you using l-lycine as a supplement? I was able to get rid of a really bad upper respiratory with it. I buy it in capsule form and mix the powder into cats food and my cat, who could be a forensic pathologist when it comes to detecting supplements, does not know it is there. I make sure she gets 500mg daily and although it takes time, it usually works. I also use interferon, but give it on and off each day, rather than weeks. I wonder if that would make a difference. There is a study underway (Dr. Jean Dodds ..Rabies Challenge) to prove that we over vaccinate our animals and that one rabies shot should protect an animal for its lifetime. You can Google the 'rabies challenge' and read about the study and the vets who are involved. A rabies shot can be stressful for a healthy animal. I would think twice about vaccinating an Felv kittie. Hope your General continues to thrive. Jane On Feb 7, 2009, at 9:17 AM, souther...@aol.com wrote: AT WHAT AGE DID YOUR CAT BECOME FeLV POSITIVE? (I now take him to the Nashville Cat Clinic) This boy went from living outside to living in the garage to now living in the house and sleeping in the bed with the Mini Schnauzer who hates him and my husband and me. He has some really strange eating habits these days. He won't eat any one food for long. My vet wants him on grain free canned but he's not willing to eat that right now. He is now eating Evo dry and Halo dry. He'll eat one for 2-3 days and then he won't eat it and I'll change. The only problem I have is that I can no longer get him to take his supplements. He's on an immune system supplement that is a tablet I used to mix with the wet food. Now he won't eat it if I do. I've tried even mixing it in tuna and he won't eat it. So I'm in a little bit of a state over this. he is also on interferon 7 days on and 7 days off. I've also had some problems with this lately as he seems to throw up on the days that I give him interferon. He's had a kidney infection he's overcome. he has had pancreatitis that he's overcome, and he's had some fairly chronic upper respiratory infections. We think he's probably about 4-7 years old. He came to me when he was between 2-5 we think. I think he was dumped because he has such a love of humans. He's a big (15 lbs now) lapcat. He loves to be petted. He loves to be around people. He follows me every step I take, if the dog will let him. His only stress is the Mini Schnauzer who is 12 and has epilepsy :-) She hates him. He just tries to stay out of her way. (She sleeps on the bed at the foot and he sleeps up at the head, by my head!) Every time he sneezes I worry. But he's hanging in there so far, and as far as I can tell he is prospering. He has had rabies vaccine and calici virus in the past but I don't know if we'll do rabies this year since he isn't outside now. I'll have to talk to my vet about that and the calici too. Feces, urine and vomit cover the floors, walls and cages. Medical care is all but ignored, disease runs through the facility. In fact they have felv and are ignoring it. I have taken four felv positive cats out of there in less than a year. Three have died. Many, many, many complaints have been made to the sheriff's department, only recently did we get them to present something to the DA's office, but they will not press charges. Re: [Felvtalk] Sidney, How is General?
He's eating but now he seems to be throwing up what he eats. he has no fever and he acts normal. Has been fever free and acting normal for the last couple of days. The not eating and the fever was just one day. But I gave him Meow mix wet the last few days and he threw it up twice. I just gave him Evo, after the Meow Mix came up this morning. If this doesn't work I have the chicken and turkey baby food to try. ** One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. Try it now. Well, he ate the broth of the canned chicken I had (regular people Tyson white meat canned chicken) and then he ate 3 or 4 bites of the actual meat. This morning he's done the same thing. No cat food but he'll drink that broth and eat some of the meat. He's much perkier today and as far as I can tell, no fever (cool ears, cool wet nose, moving around, more social.) So we're better. he hasn't eaten again today. he was eating fine the last few days, but today he didn't eat and he's staying in his bed and really isn't communicating with anyone, and this is a social cat. His little nose and his ears are warm. No jaundice of his eyes or gums that I can see. He was sneezing a lot yesterday and this morning. Not now. But he's breathing fine. he just isn't getting out of his bed. He's stayed totally in the bed for the last 6 hours I know. My vet isn't open again until Monday. Is there anything I need to be doing? Re: [Felvtalk] General didn't eat breakfast
He is eating, he just doesn't seem to want his canned food.? I swear he's like my son was when he was little.? He got sick after eating a grilled cheese sandwich once and to this day he won't eat grilled cheese.? General was eating canned food and loving it when he had an attack of what we think is pancreatitis.? He has had a slow climb? back from that and I swear I think it's because that's what he was eating then.? He also will not get on the sofa that he was on when he got so sick and threw up all over the sofa and I do mean ALL OVER it.? (I didn't fuss at him for it, I was so upset because he was so lifeless when I found him)? Since then he's had nothing to do with that sofa.? [Felvtalk] Interferon use?
When I first took General to the vet I use now, the vet started him on interferon, liquid, 7 days on and 7 days off. I did that for a long time but since he's been having all these tummy problems, it seems that when I give it to him now he vomits that day. Are you folks on interferon? have you had any issues with it? Sidney and the General ** Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. Try it now. [Felvtalk] Introduction - new here (LONG)
I just found this list after doing a little on line reading. I joined this list to learn more about the issues surrounding caring for a Feline Leukemia positive cat. Here's our story: I have never owned a cat or even been around a cat in my life and I'm almost 52. Two years ago this coming spring I was in my yard working in my flowers and this poor scrawny cat came and climbed up in my lap. I kept moving him and he came moving back in my lap. He just kept hanging around so I gave him milk (remember I know NOTHING about cats). The next day he was sitting on my front porch so I brought him some dog food out (that's all I had as I have always had dogs) He ate it as fast as I'd give it to him. The next day he was still there so I bought him catfood. I started feeding him every day outside. He stayed. After about 3 weeks I figured if he was going to stay I better get him to a vet and get him neutered. I took him to my dog's vet who tested him for Feline Leukemia and I don't know what else and said he's positive for Feline Leukemia, you might as well have him put to sleep as he's gonna die anyway. Well, I'd become attached to him so I said, no not gonna do that. Go ahead and neuter him and give him whatever vaccinations he needs and we'll go from there. I found a local vet that specializes in cats and took him there. I moved him inside and there's he's been ever since. He's a huge boy now, a sweet loving lap cat and I love him with all my heart :-) He's had some problems, a kidney infection, eye infections, and now he's having some issues with what they think is pancreatitis. He's had bouts of vomiting, and loss of appetite. It comes back after a day or so and he's fine for several days but then it seems to come back. I'm now waiting on the results of some test that may be able to determine if it is truly pancreatitis. All his other blood levels are normal. No temp. Today his heart rate was up but other than that he was normal other than he acted like his tummy hurt and he wouldn't eat and didn't want to be handled (both things are very unlike him as he'd sit in my lap for hours usually if I'll let him) So here we are and we're hoping to learn. Oh, his name is General Sterling Price, named for a cat in a John Wayne movie, True Grit (Mattie Ross: You don't have any family, do you?Except Chen Lee and that lazy cat. Cogburn: General Price don't belong to me.Cats don't belong to nobody! He just rooms with me.Course I depend on him...)
