Claudia
How kind you were to try and save your kitty.  Sometimes there really isn't
anything we can do.  You love for Cheshire was probably the greatest gift and
most comforting thing you could give her.  Deepest condolences, and prayers of
love and light for Cheshire in her crossing.

My sweet, beautiful little Cheshire crossed the rainbow bridge last Wednesday
night. She had only been sick for less than 10 days. She was on antibiotics
and some pred for 10 days for gum problems. I was going to schedule her for a
cleaning in a few weeks, but her health seemed to decline a few days after
that. She started hiding under the bed, and not eating, when seh came out, I
saw a growth on her throat area, adn took her to the vet. They weren't sure if
it was a abcess or worse. I took her back seveveral times over the course of 6
days, she had to be given fluids through IV, and I syringe fed her. I've never
been through anything like this before. I was praying for her. On wednesday
they told me they couldn't do surgery to remove the cyst 'cause she was so
anemic and her blood count was so low, it looked like she had leukemia. The
only thing to do was bring her home or try to get her more help at the vet
hospial where they have cancer specialists for a transfusion. I brought her
there. They had an extensive list of treatment for her, and costs. It was
 stressful.

I gave them permission for treatment and a deposit before they could do
anything. They told me she started to go into distress when put in the Oxygen
tank and tube, I wanted them to do whatver they could to help her, and
 Cheshire
blinked at me when I was in the room with her right next to her. She wasn't
really blinking before that as whe had a tube in her mouth that was helping
 her
 breath.

This was so painful for me. Her heart gave out, and that's how she went. I
don't know if anyone on here has been through anything like this, but I've
wondered if by brining her to that hospital and trhing to get here more help
 to
stabilize her for a transfusion caused her more distresss that lead to her
passing? I've talked to the doctors who told me no, that didn't do it, she was
just very sick,a nd even if i'd brought her home, she would haev onyl
 survived a
few days or 24 hours. I even had jsut bought the Mega C plus which I had heard
 good things about reversing felv.

I told her how much I love her and she knows that until I see her again.

Claudia, I'm so sorry for your loss. You have done everything you can to
restore her health and to make her as comfortable as you could. Sometimes,
we just have to take comfort in that, even though your heart aches terribly

surely is thankful for your love and devotion. Bless you for caring so
much.

We will light a candle in Southern California tonight in her memory...also

2010-09-27 Thread Sharyl
You did what you thought was the right thing for Cheshire and that is what
counts. With multiple problems is is hard to get them stable enough for
effective treatments. I've had cats get super stressed out going to the vet
and others that don't mind at all. If you hadn't tried to help her you would
always question yourself wondering if there was something else you could have
done. At least now you know you did everything possible to help her.

In the end we love them, care for them and let them go. She knew you were
trying to help her and you were there for her. That is what really counts.

I am so sorry for your loss - I just had to euthanize one of our cats last
weekit never gets easier, as some people who don't understand seem to
think! I remember every cat, dog, bird, mouse we ever haddetailed
circumstances, etc. - like a video going off in my mind! Natalie

I Am Always With Her

And God asked the feline spirit,
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul, And, as a cat, you know I
am most able to decide anything for myself.
Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel,
But I must come slowly, for my human friend is troubled For, you see, she
needs me, quite certainly.
But doesn't she understand? asked God, That you'll never leave her?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed? It just isforever and ever and
ever.
Eventually she will understand, replied the glorious cat, For I will
whisper into her heart that I am always with her, I just amforever and
ever and ever.

Tiger (non FeLV) also had an abcess on his throat. It was drained but came back
so fast. And his white blood cell count dropped so dramatically in two weeks
that my vet thought he had leukemia, also. They had never seen anything like
it. I also kept asking myself if there was anything I could have done, or
anything I should have noticed. Then I realized that his infection came on so
very quickly and with such strength that there probably wasn't a thing that
could be done about it. Still, I have felt guilty for a month. He died
overnight at the vet. I wanted the best for him, but I wish I could have been
with him so he didn't have to die alone.

It also makes a big difference WHERE the abscess is located. If it's higher
up and isn't able to drain on its own, chances of infections are much
greater and more serious than if it were located on the side or underneath
where it CAN drain on its own. I had one cat years ago that was bitten by
another cat on top of her neck...she had to have a drain, which we had to
flush out every day.
I always hate it when a cat dies at the vet's overnight...I worry about how
they felt, were they afraid, all alone, etc.

Tiger (non FeLV) also had an abcess on his throat. It was drained but came
back so fast. And his white blood cell count dropped so dramatically in two
weeks that my vet thought he had leukemia, also. They had never seen
anything like it. I also kept asking myself if there was anything I could
have done, or anything I should have noticed. Then I realized that his
infection came on so very quickly and with such strength that there probably
wasn't a thing that could be done about it. Still, I have felt guilty for a
month. He died overnight at the vet. I wanted the best for him, but I wish I
could have been with him so he didn't have to die alone.

My sweet, beautiful little Cheshire crossed the rainbow bridge last
Wednesday
night. She had only been sick for less than 10 days. She was on
antibiotics
and some pred for 10 days for gum problems. I was going to schedule her
for a

cleaning in a few weeks, but her health seemed to decline a few days after
that. She started hiding under the bed, and not eating, when seh came out,
I
saw a growth on her throat area, adn took her to the vet. They weren't
sure if
it was a abcess or worse. I took her back seveveral times over the course
of 6
days, she had to be given fluids through IV, and I syringe fed her. I've
never
been through anything like this before. I was praying for her. On
wednesday

they told me they couldn't do surgery to remove the cyst 'cause she was so
anemic and her blood count was so low, it looked like she had leukemia.
The

only thing to do was bring her home or try to get her more help at the vet
hospial where they have cancer specialists for a transfusion. I brought
her

there. They had an extensive list of treatment for her, and costs. It was
stressful.

I gave them permission for treatment and a deposit before they could do
anything. They told me she started to go into distress when put in the
Oxygen
tank and tube, I wanted them to do whatver they could to help her, and
Cheshire
blinked at me when I was in the room with her right next to her. She
wasn't
really blinking before that as whe had a tube in her mouth that was
helping her

breath.

This was so painful for me. Her heart gave out, and that's how she went. I
don't know if anyone on here has been through anything like this, but I've
wondered if by brining her to that hospital and trhing to get here more
help to

stabilize her for a transfusion caused her more distresss that lead to her
passing? I've talked to the doctors who told me no, that didn't do it, she
was
just very sick,a nd even if i'd brought her home, she would haev onyl
survived a
few days or 24 hours. I even had jsut bought the Mega C plus which I had
heard

good things about reversing felv.

I told her how much I love her and she knows that until I see her again.

everyone (my vaccinated cat and stray mom and her litter) together. I was so
scared, but the folks on this list helped me to realize that this disease may
not be as contagious as some think - and my vet concurred. I was lucky - it
was a false positive. But because of the wonderful folks on this list I will
take in another homeless cat and kittens and not worry at all because all of
mine (I kept mom and one of the babies) are vaccinated. Then I will follow my

Thanks to everyone on this list - maybe someday all kitties will have homes
regardless of their FeLV status because of your bravery and persistence.

Re: [Felvtalk] My cat

2009-02-26 Thread jbero
Hey,

That's a common forum of debate in this circle. The best data that I have seen
suggests that approximately 70% of cats exposed to the virus will be able to
mount an immune response capable of irradicating the virus. If the cats are
vaccinated, this number jumps about 85-90%. It is not a perfect vaccine but it
does help in certain instances.

Of those cats that are not able to eradicate the virus about half will be able
to suppress the effects and live a largely normal life with a near normal life
span. The remaining are not capable to controlling the disease, develop
symptoms and generally survive 3-5 years after exposure.

It is a very common cause of death especially in stray cats and is transmitted
through close contact (generally food, water and liter boxes - sometimes
grooming). The virus is in high numbers in saliva. For this reason vets are
very cautious when dealing with the virus. I am of the opinion, however, that
there is a lot more fear in the disease than may be justified. It is certainly
nothing to ignore, and those of us that have lost loved ones to the disease
understand why, but I think there is a far lower rate of transmission and
disease development that the general vet suggests.

Hope this helps a little. There are many others in this group that can offer
insight on this subject. Good luck.

I do have a female cat I have isolated with felv at this point in time and am
looking for a companion for her. I will help if I can.

Sharyl, i haven't gotten that far--we will immunize them and let them
interact, I think, but it's been less than 24 hours since diagnosis
and we're still reeling. I have to talk to the vet, still, and we may
try to keep them separate until the IRV? IRA? results come back, or
even until after re-testing. As Sally said to Jenny, though, there's
already been exposure, so I'm tempted to just immunize and mix.

Molly,

I'm sorry to hear about your furbaby.  We understand that horrible feeling
when you get a positive FeLV test result back.  However, it isn't an
immediate death sentence, and often there can be false positives on the
tests.  In addition, kitties can 'throw' the virus, meaning their immune
systems reject the virus and they are no longer positive.  I'm sure that's
not the actual scientific explanation, but you get the idea.  A stress-free
environment, a great diet, with immune boosting supplements, and lots of
love are the 3 best things you can do for your kitty.  Many of us, including
me, believe in mixing positives and negatives.  I did, and my other 3 never
contracted it from my positive and they were together for 4 years.  You'll
need to vaccinate your  negatives though should you choose to mix.  It's
those cats with weakened immune systems, like kittens whose IS's are not
fully developed yet, that are more susceptible.  Plus fighting,
where saliva can be transferred into the bloodstream, is also how it can
be contracted.  How long have your others been exposed to your positive?  If
it's been a while, and your others tested negative recently, then they have
most likely been exposed, and aren't susceptible, especially if they are
adults.  That being said, there have been a few people here who have had
negatives become positive, but it's rare in my opinion.  I think it causes
more stress to separate, especially if they are already used to being
together.  Is he symptomatic?  What prompted you to test him?

Thanks,
Wendy

Amanda,

I am so sorry to hear about your beloved kitty.  Please don't blame yourself.
It sounds like you loved him very much and did ALL you could for him, out of
love.  And yes, 7 years is a long time!  A lot of FeLV+'s don't even live
past 2-3 years.  Mine lived 4.5 and I felt lucky to have had him that long.  He
developed anemia.  The best you can do is feed a good diet, supplement with
immune boosting things like l-lysine, etc., and keep kitty stress free.
That's all we can do really.  And love them to pieces.  Other than that, it's
up to the good Lord how long we are blessed with their presence, as any of our
loved ones are.  Please ask any specific questions you may have and the

you are comforted by all the good memories you have of Silver Chan.

Hi all, I'm Amanda I live in Japan, I don't know if I was a member
here before or not, I keep going from group to group, but I need
advice please. I just lost last week my beloved cat he was minus 4
months almost 7 years old! He was diagnosed when he was about 1 1/2
years old along with his sister. He also had a heart murmur that
developed into a full heart problem when he was 3 years old. Besides
taking the interferon when first had FeLV he never took any other
medications, he was treated holistically and was on a raw diet, he
would have cat food as a treat. He was very well sometimes had
diarrea if ate too many bugs outside or ate a rat! He was an outside
cat, but since just over 2 years ago I decided to have him on a
harness and kept him inside as one of our cats got into a fight and
had a heart attack ! He was healthy even. My cat (Sorry his name was
Silver chan), at first cried to go outside, I had an outside cage
for him too, and he soon ajusted to life on the leash, I'd take him
for many walks aday as I could. Sometimes we'd be attacked by the
neighbours tom cat (my cats are all neutered) and twice my cat got
stressed out and bit me instead as a result! But other wise he was
good natured. Since last fall 2007, I noticed that he didn't put on
weight on, I even forgot about that it could be related to having
FeLV , I thought maybe because he's on the leash and can't catch prey
much now, sometimes he still did! Those days I was spoiling him with
extra cat food with added rice, my husbands suggestion, I thought it
was o.k since he did have abit of rice maybe once a week with fish,
but he soon started getting stomach aches, so I stopped it, but would
still sometimes give a teaspoon of cat food as a treat, mostly I'd
try natural ones with no or low salt. I tried to keep him as stress
free as possible knowing he had a heart problem. He was also on DMG,
CoQ10, natto, and probiotics, for his heart. This year suddenly his
voice changed abit, so off to the vets and they thought it maybe
stress related, though I had gave him some chicken cat food that I
never gave before, so I stopped that and soon his voice became normal
again, that time was May and we had all the tests and x rays, and
nothing was found. During the summer sometimes he would vomit and he
always ate grass and maybe more lately, once or twice he vomitted a
little blood, I thought he just had a delicate stomach, so took care
not to give him too much food, ( he ate 3 small meals aday) He always
had some stress from stray cats passing on garden /land, taht May he

Dixie lived with me for 3 years. She was full grown when she came
from a pine thicket where she had been living with a feral colony.
She had the absolute best care possible both from her regular vets and
holistic vets. When she left, I felt and continue to feel, that I had
given her everything. I am sure there are things I might do
differently and she left June 12, 2008. But everything I did for her
I did with all the love in the world and with all the expectations
that what I did was right. Neither of us can second guess ourselves
when it comes to these wonderful beings. We can do the very best we
can, love them (and I assure you Dixie was loved as much as any cat
who ever set paw on this earth), and grieve for them. Stop beating
yourself up. Stay with this group though. You will learn so much and
you may make different decisions later.

I'm so sorry that you lost Silver chan. I lost my Romeo to lymphoma in much
the same way not too long ago. It just seems to take them so fast--one day
Romeo seemed fine and within two weeks he died. I don't think giving him
the cat food 'treats' contributed to his developing lymphoma--I understand
that FELV cats are more susceptible to this type of cancer and its one of
those conditions we all dread in our positives.

It sure sounds like Silver chan had a wonderful life and you shouldn't feel
that there was anything you could have done. You did the very best for
him--he knew it, I'm sure--and he lived a full happy life. That's what
matters most...

Amanda,
I was saddened to read that your cat has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.  I'm new
to caring for FeLV+ kitties. The oldest of my 6 positive kitties are just a yr
old.  I really don't think feeding some canned cat food as a treat caused his
death.  Many of us feed canned cat food.

All we can do is feed the best diet the cat will eat, keep their lives as
stress free as possible and love them with all our hearts.  You did all of
this.  He couldn't have asked for a more loving home.

Amanda -- Chris is absolutely right. I don't think there is anything you
can do to prevent lymphoma. You can beef up the cat's system so it can
withstand a lot of things like colds and other sicknesses that aren't
harmful to healthy cats but can be dangerous to FeLV+'s, but they ARE very
susceptible to lymphoma and if there were a way to prevent that through food
or care, humans would be doing it too! Seven is a pretty good age for
Silver chan to have lived, but of course he was way too young to die (and of
course we all know that ANY age is way too young when you love them so
much). It sounds like you did a great job taking care of him, and I
certainly don't think that your cat food treats had anything at all to do
with him getting sick. Many of our kitties have cat food as their regular
diet (though of course better ones are recommended) and raw or natural
meat as a treat.

As for your other FeLV+ kitty, of course the recommendations are good food,
as little stress as possible, lots of love. You can add certain vitamins
and supplements, like natural L-lysine, to the food, to keep their
resistance to illnesses strong, and you can use flower essences like Bach
Rescue Remedy in their water to help the stress level. I'm sure there will
be other good suggestions coming along as well.

Hello Amanda
i don't think you could have done anything more for Chan. i had lymphoma and
it is a fast acting, vicious disease. even human doctors don't know much about
it. when i got it in 2000, there were only 2 known chemos that worked
sometimes. i went thru both of them and when they did not work, was told 3 - 4
months. Gymzar was dscovered by accident and they tried that. all it did was
kill my red blood cells. a year later i went into spontaneous remission. i
credit prayer and vitmins/mineral for that. i have been in remission for 5
years now and am still going strong. try prayer, it does work. dorlis

but he soon started getting stomach aches, so I stopped it, but would
still sometimes give a teaspoon of cat food as a treat, mostly I'd
try natural ones with no or low salt.
During the summer sometimes he would vomit and he
always ate grass and maybe more lately, once or twice he vomitted a
little blood, I thought he just had a delicate stomach, so took care
not to give him too much food, ( he ate 3 small meals aday) He always
had some stress from stray cats passing on garden /land, taht May he
growled at one, so not sure if it was related. Anyway we adopted 3
more cats this summer, he's very good with other cats, but he would
get annoyed if they followed us on our walks, but we soon left them
and went alone which he loved but he didn't mind sharing the house
with them. Well just over 3 weeks ago I noticed him breathing fast,
I thought his heart had worsened but it was lymphoma cancer in his
chest and fluid arround his lungs, we tried chemo but made him worst
and he lost alot of weight, so he was just made comfortable for the
last weeks, he died on the 22nd. Of course I'm going through the self
blame phrase, I wish I hadn't given him cat food as snacks! and many
other things, I have anorther cat who has it now, he had interferon
and is now better and is on a raw diet and lactoferrin and digestive
enzymes, is there anything else I can do for him? And do you think
my cat Silver chan could have lived longer? I mean when he first lost
weight last year, maybe he should have had interferon again? I'm sure
it was all FeLV related but what could I or should I have done? I
really thought he didn't have FeLV anymore, and was just concerned
about his heart! Please also tell me your stories, what age did your
cats live to , what treatments, diet ect? I really don't want to
make any more mistakes, I feel like I killed my cat giving him cat
food that may have caused him to go downhill, or . I really don't
know, but some people say living to be almost 7 with FeLV isn't so
bad, his sister died age 3. Please advice, I'm making myself sick
from this self guilt!!! please advice and help me through this
