[Finale] Re: Finale Digest, Vol 89, Issue 3

2010-12-03 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi - first time on this list - hoping someone might be able to help me out
with a big problem.

Was running Finale 2008, original version, on an old IBM Thinkpad, but was
having lots of playback issues, and I knew the IBM didn't have enough
grunt-power for that much program.

So I bought the fastest computer I could find, an HP dv6 Notebook PC with an
Intel Core i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60 Ghz and 4G of ram.

Finale 8 worked quite well with this new setup, but when I updated to Finale
10, instantly I encountered latency problems in playback. Immediately after
booting the program, playback sounded okay, but the more time that passed,
the greater and greater the delay.

Heard that the internal sound card in a lot of laptops couldn't buffer lots
of data, so I bought the best sound card I could find, an Alesis io2. Ran
into the same problem. So I just stuck with the original version of 2008,
even when it didn't copy accidentals when copying from one staff to another.

When I updated to the latest version of 2008, I ran into the same problem
again - latency, that got worse and worse with time. The Finale folks
recommended ASIO4All with version 10 - I downloaded it and set it as the
audio driver, but I encountered the same latency, at any setting of the ASIO
buffer size.

The only way I was able to fix the problem was to uninstall Finale 2008 and
reinstall the original version, which worked perfectly, just like before.
But over and above the bugs in that version, it's only supported on Windows
XP, which will soon be outdated and unavailable as well.

I asked the nice folks at the helpdesk for_any configuration that would work
- any sound card, any settings, but they said I was having hardware
problems, which were out of their sphere of support.

If anybody has any suggestions that might let me run Finale 2010 with no
latency in playback (over and above selling my HP on Ebay and switching to
Mac), I'd be extremely grateful.

Thanks and best,
  Michael Dutka

Also, make sure Update Page Layout for Score is unchecked in the Page
Layout menu whenever you edit any of the settings in the floating Edit
System Margins, Edit Page Margins, Page Size, Resize Page or Resize
Staff System dialogs or else the changes you make to what you are
specifically editing will be made to your default page layout settings and

 what

[Finale] Insert Notes Using MacBook Pro USB Keyboard

2012-05-16 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Just switched from a PC laptop to a MacBook Pro, with a USB
keyboard, and having problems with the silliest things.

Like, the insert function. On a PC keyboard, it's just INS. I checked all
the Mac groups, that talk about the FN key (which does nothing) and the
Help key (which I don't have).

What do folks with Mac's and USB keyboards do if they want to insert notes
within a measure?

[Finale] Opening PC 2008 Files in Mac 2010 - Lyrics Gibberish

2012-12-14 Thread Michael Dutka
Has anyone else had this problem? When I open files I created in Finale
2008 on a PC with my MacBook running 2010, the lyrics are crazy - random
syllables from random sections showing up randomly.

The HelpDesk folks said it was an optimization problem, that I should
Remove Optimization on my XP, export an .xml file, and import the .xml file on
the Mac. Better, but still lots of crazy syllables.

Also, randomly, parts of the accompaniment plays poorly (it's a piano
reduction of an orchestral opera score) - the right hand hardly sounds at
all in various measures.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on a fix?

Re: [Finale] Finale Digest, Vol 116, Issue 15

2013-03-20 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Running Finale 2010 on a Macbook Pro and having a really
annoying problem. From time to time, a given function will just 'freeze up.'
Usually, it's the speedy entry tool - it just won't work, I won't be able
to highlight a measure and enter notes from my midi keyboard. Sometimes
it's other tools and functions, like the expression tool, the text tool, or
even shift8 to hide sharps or flats, or show courtesy accidentals.

Talked to the help desk, deleted the Preferences file, reinstalled the
program, and it's still happening. Has anyone else encountered this same
problem in 2010, and is there any solution (including upgrading to 2012, if
that'll fix it)?

I'd be very grateful for any advice anyone has. Thanks and best,

Mike

Thanks. I called and they cleared out my previous authorization(s) so I
could authorize. Hopefully I'll remember to deauthorize Finale before
formatting a hard drive in the future.

They only had 2 previous authorizations on record. Is that the max? It sure
seems like I've wiped drives and re-installed Finale a bunch of times
before without running into this issue. I wonder if it is tied to the
machine name, because this time I re-installed Windows I changed the

You get 2 authorizations for each version of Finale, so if you've done
this sort of thing in years past when previous versions of Finale were
involved, it wouldn't have affected your current version.

You are legally allowed to keep all your registered versions of Finale
 installed at the same time.

[Finale] Double Accidentals with Doublings

2015-03-02 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi folks. IMHO, one of the biggest problems Finale has vis a vis (dare I
mention on this e-group) Sibelius is the way it handles accidentals with
doubled notes, i.e., oboes 1 and 2 doubled on a B flat.

In Sibelius, the doubled accidentals are on top of each other. In Finale,
they're side by side, so in the score, two F sharps would have two #'s in
front of them, and a B flat would look like a B double-b (looking to the
conductor like it should sound like an A).

The first big score I wrote, I just erased all the flats in layer 2 with
shift8 (which took hours). Then, when it came time to generate parts, oboe
2 was missing the flat and played a wrong note.

My latest score's being recorded the end of the month, and this time, I
painstakingly moved every layer 1 flat on top of the layer 2 flat with the
flat mover tool in the tool menu (again, running 2010 on a Macbook). (This
took even longer, and I'm scared to think what the parts for the layer 1
instruments'll look like).

Do 2012 or 2014 have solutions to this problem? Are there any global
solutions anyone can recommend, especially solutions that don't muck up the
parts output?

Thanks and best,

Hi, folks. Running 2010 on a Macbook Pro. I often have a problem when I
want to reposition hairpins. I click the Smart Shapes tool, and either
delete and re-enter them, or reposition them with the cursor. Often (but
not always), I can see 'ghosts' of the old hairpins along with the new
ones. Not a huge problem, using the Speedy Entry tool and clicking on the
measure deletes them, but it's another step, and a it's little annoying.

It also happens with articulations, but less frequently.

Does anyone have the same problem? Is there a reason why it happens
sometimes and not others? Is there anything that can prevent this? Does it
happen in 2012 (planning to upgrade next week)? 2014?

Any advice and/or recommendations deeply appreciated. Thanks,

 Mike Dutka

It?s an annoying bug and or limitation to Finales graphic engine. And no,
there is no workaround. I?ve gotten using to Cmd-D but it?s still an
annoyance. And yes, it is there in 2012. I haven?t done enough file
editing in 2014 to state for sure whether or not it?s still there. Can?t
say that I?ve noticed it with articulations.

Thanks,

 Mike Dutka

After repositioning, hit command R to redraw.

It?s an annoying bug and or limitation to Finales graphic engine. And
no, there is no workaround. I?ve gotten using to Cmd-D but it?s still an
annoyance. And yes, it is there in 2012. I haven?t done enough file
editing in 2014 to state for sure whether or not it?s still there. Can?t
say that I?ve noticed it with articulations.

[Finale] Problems Transferring Files to MIDI

2015-04-13 Thread Michael Dutka
Hey, folks. Had something weird happen at a recording session. Wrote a new
opera on Finale 2010 (just got the e-mail saying that it's getting
premiered in NYC this Fall - yay!). I saved the .mus files as MIDI files
per the drop-down menu, and sent them to the recording engineer.

We started recording using his MIDI system and in nearly all cases, while
the initial tempos of each file were all correct, in subsequent tempo
changes, the tempos were way off.

As you know, Finale 2010 is pretty meticulous with tempo markings - you
click the 'playback' tab of the expression designer and it shows you that
it's playing the exact tempo indicated. When I played back the .mus files
in Finale, the tempos were all exactly what I wanted and when I exported to
audio files, the .mp3's all sounded perfect.

The recording engineer said his system couldn't be at fault, that it just
picks up the tempo in the MIDI file, and the problem had to be on the
Finale end, some glitch in the MIDI output. Has anyone encountered this
before? Does anyone have any idea on how to fix / prevent it?

As a slight additional glitch, a flute line with an eighth note triplet
came out as two sixteenths and an eighth. I rechecked the score and it was
an exact triplet. Not sure if it's part of the same problem, but thought
I'd mention.

Any help or advice deeply appreciated. Thanks and best,

[Finale] Problems Transferring Files to MIDI (Michael Dutka)

Jan, thanks so much for your reply. I'm probably not the first or last
Finale user to experience this problem, and hopefully this'll help folks in
the future.

in subsequent tempo changes, the tempos were way off.
What sort of subsequent tempo changes were those ?
Text expression tempo marking, text expression tempo alterations or
continuous MIDI tempo change data or human playback triggered tempo
 changes ?

They were text expression tempo markings. The movement began as a 4 4
Allegro Agitato, quarter note = 96, and the tempo changed to 6 8 Lento,
dotted quarter note = 42, both created with the expression tool.

What sort of way off were they ?

The original tempo was spot on. The subsequent dotted quarter = 42 tempo
was way too fast - as if the MIDI didn't recognize the tempo change, and
was still playing quarter notes as 96, so the dotted quarters were 64.

Did you export all staves in one MIDI file and the MIDI didn't sound
 like the Finale playback ?

I clicked FILE, Save As, and chose the MIDI option from the Format tab. And
yes, beginning with the tempo change, the MIDI sounded much faster than the
Finale playback.

Or did you create individual MIDI tracks per staff and the individual
MIDI files don't match each other ?

I_believe it was the former.

It's difficult to solve the Finale tempo problems without knowing all this.

Understood and again, I really appreciate your help.

 Some ideas to fix it:
 - Don't mix tempo text expressions AND continuous MIDI data
I.e. if you are not working with continuous MIDI tempo change data,
delete with edit filter all MIDI Data - Tempo Changes and work with
 tempo text expressions only

In the Edit Filter Menu, under MIDI Data, the Tempo Changes box wasn't
checked.

Or: delete all tempo text expressions and work with continuous MIDI
 tempo change data only.
 - Check Play recorded tempo changes in Playback/Record Options

This was checked

 - Check Dynamics and markings: Chase from First Measure in
 Playback/Record Options

This was set correctly

 - Make sure that the expression playback layer is not muted in the score
manager if you use tempo text expressions

Hmmm. Not sure what / where the score manager is (it didn't come up on
search). I never deliberately muted the expression playback, and if it were
muted, I wonder if the initial tempo would have been correct. Not sure.

 - Use a custom human playback custom style with Rubato set to 0%,
 Rhythmic Feel to 0%,

Interpret Tempo Changes unchecked, Interpret Final bars
 unchecked, Interpret Fermatas unchecked.

 - set Human Playback - MIDI Data - Tempo to No HP Effect

 - Make sure Humen Playback - Tempo Variations - Randomize Tempo
 Variations is unchecked

 - if all the human playback stuff is still not enough, turn off human
 playback completely

 Best regards,
 Jan

Thanks again. Will work through these. Again, I'm using 2010 - are all the
instructions you gave for that, or a later version? But I did turn off
human playback, and it didn't seem to affect the sound, so I'll recreate
the MIDI files and send them that way.

Jan has given you some great information and suggestions.

Another suggestion is to ask your recording engineer whether his
software can accept MusicXML files (more and more of them can accept
that) -- perhaps if his software can accept the MusicXML files you will
 get more accurate playback.

Good luck with it all, and congratulations on the upcoming premiere!

 David H. Bailey

Thanks - will do!

[Finale] Problems Transferring Files to MIDI

2015-04-17 Thread Michael Dutka
Thanks, Christopher. I sent revised MIDI files to the engineer, one with
Tempo Changes checked in the Edit Filter menu, the other with Human
Playback set to None.

He said he'd get back to me about how the two files work, respectively. And
if anyone's in NYC on September 26th, come see the opera! Admission is free.

Best,

This sounds like a Human Playback issue. In certain styles, Human
Playback makes small adjustments in the tempo, like a rit at the
end, but doesn't do it with mathematical certainty. If you want only
exact tempos, you will have to dig into the guts of Human Playback
and find out how to turn off the tempo adjustments it makes.

Once I was transferring MIDI over in two passes, and discovered that
the tempo was not the same between two takes! Human Playback
apparently has a certain random factor in its tempo decisions. But
turning off Human Playback and applying the Human Playback plugin
instead apparently fixed the tempo adjustments so every time I hit
Play it would be precisely the same. (Disclaimer: I didn't do it, a
friend did. I couldn't figure it out.)

Re: [Finale] Finale Digest, Vol 142, Issue 19

2015-05-21 Thread Michael Dutka
Robert, what version are you running? I've crashed about ten times in the
last week, and I've always found the .asv file afterwards, usually with
very little music lost (mine also saves every five minutes, and it's a
little annoying, because it breaks my chain of thought, but when I have a
crash,. it's worth it).

If you 'open recent,' that'll open the last .mus file you saved, which
won't have the new material, and in mac, sometimes the file might not be
saved in the folder in which you saved the last .mus file. Sometimes I have
to hunt around for the .asv

As an extremely low-tech solution (something I started doing when I
couldn't get an old version of Finale to auto-save), I just hit 'save-as'
every ten minutes or so. FWIW.

Good luck!

[Finale] Playback Doesn't Stop at End of Piece

2015-08-22 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Having a weird little problem with Finale 10 on Mac.

The playback always used to stop at the end of every file. For some reason,
now when it reaches the end of a file, it just continues, counting time,
until I click the stop button. Not a huge problem, but it's a little
annoying and I wish it wouldn't.

I have playback controls set to play from leftmost measure to end of piece.
Anyone have the same problem? Any suggestions?

[Finale] Missing Percussion Map? (David Wolfson)

Whenever I have a power problem, one additional step that sometimes helps
is to completely cut power to the MIDI interface, wait 20 seconds and then
plug it back in.

I've had problems with wonky sound which that's fixed. Not sure if it'll
help in this case, but worth a try.

Good luck!

I opened a FinMac 2014 file for the first time in several months and
discovered that my percussion playback has gone blooie. I have alternating
measures with music in layer 1 and layer 2, feeding to different
channels/instruments; in layer 1, the notes are playing back on the wrong
sounds, and in layer 2, it?s the correct sound, but grace notes and the
notes that follow them are not playing back at all.

I?ve submitted this to MakeMusic support and gotten no response thus far.
Any ideas from this illustrious group would be MOST appreciated.

[Finale] Why Is It So Hard to Add Instruments to an Orchestration?

2016-06-05 Thread Michael Dutka
Really appreciate the feedback. What I'm hearing is, suck it up until I'm
finished with this orchestration, then upgrade to Finale 2014.5, especially
because I heard 2012 has problems with .asv files (which would really scare
me, because I average a few crashes a month). Anyone have an experience
with 2014.5 that would contraindicate?

And btw, when I created the new file, they had the same problem with the
'measure number' boxes being unchecked in the 'Items to display' menu under
'staff attributes' for about half the staves. Weird.

Thanks again,
 Mike

[Finale] Why Is It So Hard to Add Instruments to an Orchestration?

2016-06-03 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Running 2010 on a Macbook pro.

Orchestrating an opera from a series of piano reductions, which I import
into a standard orchestra template, with a standard two-stave piano line
between the singers and the strings (then I delete the piano line when I'm
done with each number).

This particular number needed a harp, and since the piano score was a means
to an end, I just tried to convert the piano line into a harp in the
instrument list (GM = Orchestral Harp, but under instrument, it wouldn't
let me plug in a harp, it just came out as Instrument 33). It sounded like
a flute.

Created a new harp line using New Staves (with setup Wizard). This time it
sounded like a harp. Then, in playback, so did the flute. Changed the flute
to sound like a flute, and the harp sounded like a flute as well.

Finally, created a whole new orchestra and imported the file, which worked
after a bit of manipulation. But why is it so difficult to just add a new
instrument? I had the same issues when I tried to add a solo violin line to
an orchestration.

Planning to upgrade soon. Is 2012 any better at that? How 'bout 2014?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and best,

Mike

Re: [Finale] Finale Digest, Vol 153, Issue 5

2016-04-11 Thread Michael Dutka
Thanks so much for getting back. It's a Mac OS X version 10.6.8.

Magically, the folder reappeared today. I'm sure I didn't just not see it
yesterday - Finder lets you sort files and folders by name, in alphabetical
order, and I was looking right at where it should have been.

Really_weird. Very curious if anyone has any idea why this happens (spoke
to a friend yesterday who's running Finale 09 on a PC, and he said he'd had
the same thing happen to him).

But thanks again. Best,

Mike

[Finale] Finale Zapped An Entire Opera

2016-04-09 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Working on a long opera for years now, running Finale 10 on a
MacBook Pro, and all of a sudden Finale can't find the folder I store it in.

Finder finds the folder, and recently modified files show up in the
recently modified files menu, but I can't save changes to the right folder,
because it doesn't show up in the menu with the 'save as' command.

Opened and closed Finale, rebooted, everything. Any ideas, suggestions?

Thanks!

[Finale] 1. For Unsophisticated Finale Users (Like Me) / 2. For Sophisticated Users

2016-05-15 Thread Michael Dutka
1.Working with Finale 2010 on a MacBook Pro, and not sure how but the
Measure Number box in the Staff Attributes menu got unchecked for some of
the staves in an orchestral score, and when I extracted the oboe part, it
had no measure numbers.

Took me a bit of research to track down the reason.

Certainly not something I did deliberately, and I doubt it's the default in
adding staves because it wasn't checked for about half the orchestra (e.g.,
it wasn't for horns 1 & 2, but it was for 3 & 4), so either my hand slipped
somewhere along the line, or it's a lovable Finale quirk, but I wanted to
mention it, in case others encounter similar problems.

2. For sophisticated folks, is there anyone in the Philadelphia area who'd
be willing to spend some time some day at an hourly rate, helping with a
bunch of problems I've been having (e.g., printing formats for parts,
cymbals don't crash) and importing additional sound libraries into my menu?

Please let me know, thanks and best,

[Finale] Land Mines

2016-07-08 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi folks. Running 2010 on a MacBook Pro.

Have had trouble with what I call land mines, that is, what playback plays
something different from what I wrote, as if there were invisible markings
messing things up.

Sometimes it's dynamics, an oboe marked PP that blasts out of a texture
when I know it shouldn't. Even worse is tempo, when a measure with no tempo
change marked plays back inexplicably faster than the measure before. I've
even put in ridiculously slow tempo markings in measures like this and the
playback just ignores them.

Any thoughts or advice much appreciated. Best,

Re: [Finale] Land Mines

2016-07-11 Thread Michael Dutka
Thanks for the feedback, folks. I_think I tried clearing out the MIDI data
and it didn't help, but I'll give it another whirl if (more likely when) it
happens again. The restarting is a new idea - will definitely give that a
try.

Never even used the tempo tool, may definitely try that with one file that
just increased one (very important) measure's tempo by about 40%, for no
apparent reason.

Thanks again,

Mike

[Finale] A 'Where You At' Command?

2016-08-18 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi folks.

I sometimes have to meticulously count notes and slurs for multiple bars to
know whether a given string instrument / section is playing a given note
with an up or down bow. And if a section continues for a significant length
of time, I have to track back multiple bars to remind myself of the last
dynamic I gave a given instrument / staff.

The solution I had in mind is essentially a 'where you at' command, putting
shadow dynamics in each measure and shadow bow markings on every note (or
the first note of every set of slurred notes).

If I'm the only one who encounters this problem, in the immortal words of
Emily Litella, 'never mind.'

If not, do folks think this is a good idea, and if so, would it be worth
informing the MakeMusic people?

[Finale] Getting Rid of Piano / Pno. Group names on Piano Staves?

2016-10-03 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi folks. Running 2010 on a MacBook Pro (following all your threads on new
releases and_terrified to upgrade. But I digress).

Working on a piano reduction of an orchestrated opera, and as you all know,
when you add a piano to the instrument list, the default creates a grouped
treble and bass staff set with the standard piano bracket. The default
group name is Piano, and the abbreviated name is Pno.

IMHO, Pno. looks weird, and intelligent musicians don't really need us to
tell them a piano score is a piano score. So, I tried to erase the group
name and abbreviation. I tried everything I could find in the staff menu,
highlighting the group, erasing both names and leaving them blank, etc. It
only erased the name for the specific system I was working on. The opera is
dozens of pages long, with only 2 - 3 systems per page, so working system
by system would take a great deal of time and bother, and I was trying for
a global solution.

I tried starting at the beginning, it made no difference. I tried just
highlighting the box near the name Pno., and it deleted the bracket as
well, which I want to stay there.

It's not a crucial thing, but it's a presentation to a regional opera
company that might perform the piece if they like it, so I would like to
present it in the best way possible.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks and best,
Mike

Mac finale 2014;.5

Yesterday all the scores I was working on were playing back both in
the playback window and with the shift click method. Tonight NONE of
them are playing back. I have no idea where to even star. The sound
is up on the computer and I'm hearing everything else. Have I hit a
wrong button somewhere? I'm just playing back the instruments that
exist in Finale-- I use playback to check my work, not to make
recordings... I just want to hear what I've entered and play back
sections to check them.

Help!

I tried unoptimizing the part, but, for some reason, this gives me
barlines "through staves" in the part that I don't have in the score and
don't want. I found no way to correct this.)

Not an answer for you, but there's something up with playback in this
version.
I'm having a playback problem on 2014.5 Windows, too. It works fine until I
export an audio file. Then, to get sound again, I have to restart Finale.

Just recreate the group in the part. In the Staff Tool, select all, go to
Edit Groups and select Create Group. The options you want are there to be
checked or unchecked.

The reason this happened was because the staves have names. Finale will
preserve groups only for unnamed staves in the parts, like the two staves
of a piano part. If you name them, like SATB or your ripieno staves, Finale
assumes that they aren?t meant to have brackets. One trick that occurs to
me (but I?ve never tried) is deleting the staff names, creating the part,
then naming the staves again once the part has been ?tricked? into
preserving the groups. But it?s so easy to recreate a group compared to
typing in all those staff names that I?ve never tried it.

I hope this was true in 2008. I don?t have a computer that will run this
version any more.

Just to make sure I understand, when you say Finale 2010 isn't supported on

[Finale] Install Finale 2010 on Mac OS Siera 10.12

2016-11-05 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi folks. Want to buy a new computer, but don't want to upgrade to Finale
2012 (it doesn't back up as well as 2010) or 2014 (reading what you-all say
about it scares me to death).

Anyone know any reason I can't install Finale 2010 on a new mac, per above?
Anyone know for sure that I can?

Thanks,

[Finale] Program Function Keys on Mac

2016-11-23 Thread Michael Dutka
Just a quick follow-up in case it's helpful to other folks.

Downloaded Keyboard Maestro for $36, and it worked perfectly.

Programmed F1 - F4 as layers 1 - 4, F5 to favor sharps in enharmonic
spelling and F6 to favor flats.

Then programmed F7 as Speedy Entry, F8 as dynamics, F9 SmartShape, F10
articulation, F11 as lyrics and F12 text.

I think it'll significantly increase productivity. Thanks again for the
suggestion,

[Finale] Program Function Keys on Mac

2016-11-16 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi folks. Running 2010 on a MacBook Pro whose hard drive just died and had
to be replaced (recovering my data, thank all that's holy).

When I bought it originally, I asked the technician to set up function keys
such that F1 - F4 were layers 1 - 4, F5 set preference for sharps and F6
for flats.

I_think he used a 3rd party program but I'm not 100% sure.

Obviously, with the hard drive replaced, I assume these functions are gone.

Do you other folks have similar setups? How did you create them - through a
3rd party program, and if so, which one?

Many thanks in advance,

Mike

Thanks, guys. Yes, I think I can figure out how to use the built in macro

what I need.

[Finale] Instruments.txt?

2016-12-09 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi folks. My 2011 Macbook Pro running Fin 2010 died. I got a new hard drive
and new logic board and reinstalled 2010.

Seems to be working ok, but when I try to create a new file with the Setup
Wizard, I get the following error message:

Finale could not start the Wizard because a necessary data file
(instruments.txt) could not be found in the Component Files folder.

I've searched for this file in Finder, and it doesn't seem to be there. Is
there any way to get this file without re-installing 2010? And if I do,
wouldn't I experience the same problem?

Any suggestions deeply appreciated,

check that your finale Preferences/Folders/Configuration Files (on F2014.5,
names are different on F2010) are set to look up the file in the right
place.

Thanks for your reply. Checked all the files and can't find a file anywhere
that looks like instruments.txt. Probably upgrading soon, just have a few
files to go before that and have all the instruments I need in existing
templates, so not crucial, but if there is a way to get that
instruments.txt file from 2010, be great to know.

Re: [Finale] Reliable way to combine multiple files

2016-12-12 Thread Michael Dutka
Super unsophisticated user here, so please take this with a shaker-full of
salt, but I've been working on a long composition with a piano-reduction
that'll consist of 30 separate movements / .mus files.

Rather than combine files in Finale, my plan is to merely delete page
numbers from one set of files, then generate .pdf's of all 30 files.

Then I can combine the files and renumber the pages in Adobe Acrobat. I'll
have one long .pdf with page numbers from 1 to whatever, plus resetting
measure numbers in each movement that'll be completely consistent with the
measure numbers in the orchestra files.

If this is a good idea, happy to help, and if it's a bad idea, happy to be
told why.

FWIW. Best regards,

Looks impressive, and based on the work you've done I can see why you
wouldn't consider merging .pdf's as an ideal solution.

I'm assuming all the Finale protocols as well as your plugin collection
treat rehearsal letters the same way as measure #'s, beginning again at
each new section.

[Finale] NYC (or Philly) Recording Studio With Sound Library Recommendation?

2017-01-10 Thread Michael Dutka
Hope this is an appropriate query for this list group, withdrawn and
apologies if not.

Long story short, got permission from a publisher to turn a children's book
into an opera. Writing the opera, as we all know, was the easy part.

As a next step, I wanted a recording, so the publisher could include a CD
with the book, hopefully getting little people interested in opera at an
early age.

Used a recording engineer I'd worked with in the past, with a simple but
very rugged system that let him record human voices over enhanced
instruments generated from my MIDI files.

He said he had a new system that was 10x more sophisticated, so
sophisticated in fact that it was_terrible! And finally, it crashed, taking
all my voice recordings and all past work with it. So, I need to start from
scratch.

Need someone with the capacity to import my Finale (or MIDI) files, record
the (two) singers and produce .mp3's we could use for a final CD. The whole
piece is fairly short, 18 minutes, score for a standard orchestra
(woodwinds in pairs, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones and tuba, strings
and_lots of percussion).

And something hopefully not outrageously expensive, but I do need something
that'll sound professional, and I know I'll have to pay for it.

Ideally in NYC, but Philly could work as well. Any suggestions deeply
appreciated, thanks and best,

Mike

Hi folks. Long story short, my 2011 MacBook Pro crashed. They installed a

Unfortunately, somehow those right and left scrolling arrows seem to have

Instrument.txt did indeed disappear in Finale 2012, but you still need it
if you want to run 2010.

Michael Dutka: if you need a copy of this file for Finale 2010, I can send

[Finale] Bowing Plug-In?

2017-08-15 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Reviewing a fairly large opera score, about 160 minutes of
music, and one thing that would be phenomenally helpful is some kind of
plug-in or app that would let Finale users see every up and down bow, even
when they're not written in.

The string players I've spoken to don't like it when I write in every
bowing mark, and ask me only to write them in when they're not obvious. But
it's easy for me (as a non-string player) to lose track, and possibly write
in a bad bowing combination, and we all know what working out problems
during rehearsals with live musicians costs.

Is there any such thing around? Anything one of you brilliant plug-in/app
writers would want to create? I, for one, would pay a lot of money for
something like that, and can't think I'm the only one.

Just curious. Thanks,

Re: [Finale] . Interesting article on battle over copyright for "We Shall Overcome"

2017-08-11 Thread Michael Dutka
I sang with the New York Choral Society when we were the backup chorus for
his Carnegie Hall concerts.

Needless to say, we prepared like crazy for our first rehearsal with him.
Somehow, our first song didn't go well, and we were looking around,
wondering what was happening. Bob deCormier, our conductor, stopped the
rehearsal, and Pete Seeger told us he'd been working really hard on the
Clearwater Festival, he hadn't had a chance to practice as much as he
needed to be as prepared as we wanted to be, and he wanted to apologize to
each and every one of us.

We just gave him a standing ovation. Not a guy who took himself too
seriously.

[Finale] Repair Corrupted File?

2017-07-01 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Running Finale 2010 on Mac OSX 10.8.5.

Been working on my first full-length opera, and the Act IV Finale (no pun
intended) became, for want of a better word, corrupted.

When I try to play it, it takes several minutes to load. Since I'm one of
those, 'try this, play it, don't like it, try that, play it' type of
composers, that makes work on the file pretty odious.

I tried to export the file to .xml, and it keeps giving the message 'Error
while exporting MusicXML file [FILENAME] at part 22, measure 11."

Since that's somewhere in the string section (it doesn't seem to go by
staves), I tried deleting the entire string section, exported it, imported
it, and I get a file that loads and plays immediately.

Now I'm trying again with the original file, deleting strings section by
section / measure by measure to try to delete the measures with the error.

Is there any easier way to do this? Is there someone I could (gladly!) pay
to take my original corrupted file and send my back an uncorrupted file?

Any advice / suggestions deeply appreciated. Thanks and best,

The first thing to try is File Maintenance. That might fix the problem. At
the very least you'll get a report. On the report is something called
"Frames". Hopefully that number is nowhere near 32767, otherwise you will
be having continuing troubles.

FWIW: Garritan, at least, starts much faster in Fin25 than some older
versions. I don't know about Fin10, though.

Hi All,

I am engraving a piece that is in 6/8. There are places where the dotted
quarter beat is divided into 2. I've seen scores where that is notated with
2 dotted eighth notes and I've seen notated as a 2 eighth note tuplet.
Which is correct or can either be used? Thanks to anyone who can offer
their advice.

Re: [Finale] Bowing Plug-in

2017-08-17 Thread Michael Dutka
Wow! Been painstakingly plotting out my bowings ever since I learned how to
do that in college, and hearing I've been wasting my time all these years.

That'll certainly save me time and trouble in the future. Another feature I
really would like, but I'll ask in another post.

Thanks for the feedback,

Mike

[Finale] Problems Printing 11 x 17

2017-06-17 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Running 2010 on OSX 10.8.5 (and yes, planning to upgrade as soon
as I finish my current project).

Trying to print 11 x 17 scores, and but when I do, I get the error message
that some of the pages don't fit the size of the paper in the printer.
Pretty sure it's a Finale issues, not a printer interface, because I get
the same error message even if I try to generate a .pdf with no printer
selected.

The Page Size settings in the Page Layout menu look right - Tabloid Width
11 Length 17.

Is there some other setting that could be interfering? Any advice,
recommendations?

Many thanks, and best regards,

Mike

[Finale] Expression Problem

2018-05-09 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi, folks. Running Finale 2010 on a 2011 MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.5.

Did one little thing a few days ago that's caused no end of trouble. I
moved an expression (tempo) marking from the middle of a score to the
front. Ever since then, I've been experiencing strange problems with the
expression tool and playback.

For one thing, the first eighth of a beat of every measure doesn't sound.
Music that I wrote before that plays correctly, but if I try to input new
music into an existing file, the minute I change the tempo assignment, the
same problem recurs.

I can compensate by adding an extra blank measure at the beginning of each
piece, but then I have to delete it to print, and it's really annoying.

Also, the expression tool itself started malfunctioning. In some new files,
changing tempo markings has no effect on tempo - I can set q=63, 72, 112
and it makes no difference.

I've shut down and restarted the program, rebooted the computer, and
nothing helps.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any ideas on how to fix it?

I'm assuming that uninstalling and reinstalling the program will restore
original settings, but I'd be extremely grateful for any other advice or
suggestions.

Many thanks in advance and best regards,

Mike

Re: [Finale] Expression Problem

2018-05-09 Thread Michael Dutka
Hi David and thanks for your reply. Sorry I didn't make that clear. I
dragged the expression marking from its original location to the beginning
of the piece. I_think I remember which file that was (working against a
deadline, putting out lots of files every week), but now, any new file I
create experiences the same problem, likewise any old file once I change
the tempo marking.

But hey, couldn't hurt - I'll try to find the original file and delete and
re-enter the tempo marking to see if that solves the problem.

Best,
Mike
