Small Farm News: New USDA Investment in Beginning Farmers

2010-10-25 Thread Michael Burns
From:Violet Stone v...@cornell.edu

NEWS FROM THE SMALL FARMS PROGRAM AT CORNELL

TOPIC: New USDA Grant Awards Mean $3million Investment in Northeast Beginning
Farmers
DATE: For immediate release, October 25, 2010
CONTACT: Erica Frenay at 607-255-9911 or e...@cornell.edu
ONLINE NEWSROOM: http://www.smallfarms.cornell.edu/pages/news/

New USDA Grant Awards Mean $3 million Investment in Northeast Beginning Farmers

On October 18, Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan awarded grants
to 40 organizations throughout the country to provide training and assistance
to beginning farmers and ranchers that will help them run successful and
sustainable farms. Of the 40 recipients, six of them are in the Northeast and
will provide a range of services—from hands-on production training to business
planning, mentoring to land access assistance--to new farmers over the next
1-3 years:

· Tufts University, New Entry Sustainable Farming Project, Boston, Mass.,
$749,014

· Nuestras Raices, Inc., Holyoke, Mass., $740,131

· Land for Good, Keene, N.H., $547,307

· Groundswell Center for Food and Farming, Ithaca, N.Y., $349,873

· Just Foods, Inc., New York, N.Y., $426,921

· Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York, Inc., Rochester, N.Y.,
$143,973

Last year’s Northeast grant recipients included the Cornell Small Farms
Program, which is using the funds to develop new online courses and videos,
build a Northeast network of organizations serving beginning farmers, and work
with high schools to put farming back on the radar as a viable career choice.
The Penn State Cooperative Extension of Lehigh County was also a recipient
last year, and is developing SEED Farm, an incubator farm providing low-cost
land and equipment to help new farmers get started without an enormous capital
investment.

“Beginning farmers and ranchers face unique challenges, and these efforts will
help provide the training needed to ensure these producers become profitable
and sustainable,” said Merrigan. “As the average age of farmers today is 57
and continues to rise, we must do everything we can to recruit a new
generation of people to produce our food. They will continue to play an
important part of American agriculture as they feed people in their local
communities and, in some cases, throughout the world.”

USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded the grants
through its Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (BFRDP). BFRDP is
an education, training, technical assistance and outreach program designed to
help U.S. farmers and ranchers, specifically those who have been farming or
ranching for 10 years or fewer. Under the program, which was established
through the 2008 Farm Bill, NIFA will make grants to organizations that will
implement programs to help beginning farmers and ranchers.

BFRDP provided $18 million in funding this year. This is the second year of
the program, and $18 million will be made available in fiscal years 2011 and
2012. In FY 2009, BFRDP made 29 awards for approximately $17 million. For
more information on the BFRDP program, visit:

Lots of work still to be done. Come on out this Sunday from 11am-4pm
to 2247 Mecklenburg Rd. (rt 79) in Enfield; the first driveway on the
left after the bridge 1/2 mile after Enfield 4 corners. Follow the
foot path parallel to the road down to the sugarbush. Please follow
the driveway around the house if there are no spots left and also Exit
on that side. We'll be doing some chainsawing, choping and stacking,
and doing some of the final cleaning projects in preperation for the
first boil. Plenty of fun kids activites, too. There's a great base
on the sledding trails and we are also collecting ramp seeds for
spring planting. So come on out and share a day in the woods!

Permaculture Design Certification course 7/22 - 8/7, 2011 Finger Lakes NY

2011-03-03 Thread Michael Burns

The Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute
http://FingerLakesPermaculture.org

presents our

Permaculture Design Certification course

July 22 through August 7, 2011

This is our ninth, internationally recognized certification course. We train
people of all backgrounds to mimic natural patterns and principles in their
yards, on their land, and in their homes and businesses.

This year’s teaching staff includes Michael Burns, Steve Gabriel, Karryn
Olson-Ramanujan, and Rafter Sass, plus guest presenters from the local
permaculture community.

The course equips students with a whole systems approach to utilize the
principles, techniques, and challenges of permaculture as a system of
sustainable design. Our off-grid learning community explores a wide range of
topics. Some land-based examples are soil regeneration, water conservation,
building ponds and swales, managing woodlots, building natural and efficient
homes, utilizing renewable energy, and designing gardens. In addition, we
will examine social and economic paradigms, alternatives, and skills for
building just and regenerative communities.

We teach through presentations, case studies, hands-on experiential learning,
design exercises and the student design practicum. We follow the traditional
permaculture curriculum with an emphasis on strategies for the cool temperate
climate found in North America's northeastern regions. Instruction is
augmented by presentations from local experts, field trips, and fun.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Fair, Ithaca NY, Saturday, 3/5

2011-03-04 Thread Michael Burns
From:Elizabeth Viviana Karabinakis e...@cornell.edu

Greetings local farm and food lovers!

It's that exciting time of year when the snow blanketing our fields is
starting to melt and seeds are soon to find the soil, water and warmth they
need to sprout!

Farmers are gearing up for another bountiful season of local foods and so
should you. Come join us for the Annual Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Fair next Saturday, March 5th to meet local farms offering CSA shares and find
the right one for you!

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Fair
Date: Saturday, March 5th
Time: 12:00pm - 3:00pm
Location: Boynton Middle School Cafeteria, 1601 North Cayuga Street, Ithaca
Cost: FREE
What: 17 farms serving the Tompkins County and the surrounding area will be
available to speak with community members at this year’s CSA Fair. Fruits,
vegetables, granola, backed goods, meats, eggs, herbs and herbal products, and
even fiber – many local producers are finding the CSA marketing model
well-suited to their products.

CSA provides members with a weekly, or periodic, selection of products and
farmers with an established market prior to the growing season. There are
differences between CSA programs such as share size, products offered, pick-up
locations, u-pick options and on-farm work opportunities. Attend the CSA Fair
to learn about the many benefits of CSA, meet and talk with farmers, and find
out which CSA program might be perfect for you. There will be quiet activities
to occupy children while parents circulate and table space to sit and review
material you gather. CSA programs fill up quickly so don’t miss out this
season.

The CSA Fair is hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County and
is free and open to the public. For more information, call Debbie Teeter or
Liz Karabinakis at CCE-Tompkins, 607-272-2292.

Ten Reasons to Join a CSA Farm
1. Know Where Your Food Comes From
In a CSA share your produce comes directly from your farmer so you know who is
growing your food and how. If you have questions about their farming practices
or values just ask! With this level of transparency, you can rest assured
knowing your farmer cares about what matters to you.
2. Support the Economic Democracy of Small Farming
By supporting small family farms you are fostering the broad-based independent
decision making of economic democracy. You are helping to break up the
concentration of power from a select few profit-driven corporations and making
room for values beyond the bottom line. You are supporting an economic system
where more people are empowered to meet their basic needs with dignity and can
have meaningful control of their resources.
3. Save Money
CSA shares offer more value for your food dollar! 100% of your money goes
directly to the farmer to grow and harvest high quality food for you. By
working directly together, farmers and consumers can cut out the middlemen and
extraneous costs (trucking companies, retailers, lobbyists, etc.).
4. More Selection
Most CSA farms strive for ecological diversity and a wide variety in crop
production, so over the course of the season CSA farmers usually grow more
types of vegetables than found at a grocery store. You’ll discover varieties
that you might not otherwise find or buy, so get ready to enjoy your share of
the season’s bounty including leeks, celeriac, edamame, garlic scapes, daikon,
and many other diverse goodies!
5. Better Flavor
CSA farmers select for more flavorful varieties of produce and the time
between harvest and consumption is reduced so you get fresher food that tastes
better. Unlike industrial farmers that harvest for shipping and shelf-life,
CSA farmers harvest for ripeness and flavor. Eating seasonally means every
week you receive what the conditions were most fit to produce so you’re
guaranteed to eat your veggies at their peak. Get ready for a culinary delight
and adventure!
6. Have fun!
There are lots of exciting ways to enjoy your CSA share- including visits to
the farm, u-picking, potluck dinners and community events. During the growing
season there is always something fun to do with you and your family to
celebrate local agriculture, enjoy good food and mingle with other CSA
members. To find out more about opportunities to have fun with your CSA share
ask your farmer or check out the event calendar on Tompkins County Cooperative
Extension’s website http://ccetompkins.org/
7. Grow Your Local Economy
By being a CSA member you are keeping your food dollar circulating locally to
support a healthy community and environment. In an era when 120 acres of
farmland are permanently lost every year in the US and the average person has
or will face job insecurity, becoming a CSA member helps ensure your farmer
has what they need to invest in land and labor. CSA members who pay upfront of
the growing season help provide the capitol when the farmers need it most to
avoid high interest loans for equipment, seeds, fertilizers or other inputs
required

Frolic Farm seeks volunteers, collaborators, and partners

Frolic Farm is a new community farm and center for education, healing and
wellness, multimedia arts, and environmental and social change. We are located
in Callicoon, New York, about 3 hours from the city.

This is our first year and we are planning to put our fingers in many
different jars. We will be growing a diversity of annual and perennial
vegetables and medicinal herbs, possibly for market, possibly for a small CSA.
We are inspired by free school models and will be offering popular education
internships and classes. We will be doing local activist work against
hydraulic fracturing and jails and hope to do a listening project to hear and
document local stories. We will also be playing around with many permaculture
tools, including building with cob, growing mushrooms, and using greywater. We
will be making many things (bread, tinctures, pickles), learning things
(screenprinting, greenhouse-building, how to throw dance parties in fields),
and enjoying living in close community.

If you are looking for an established farm, this is not the place. But if you
are looking for an immersion in collective living and organizing, where you
have a chance for real participation and voice, then we would love to work
with you. We believe we can empower ourselves and each other to learn and
figure things out together.

Our priority is for those who can stay at least a month and perhaps the whole
season, if it fits, and also for those with some skills, but we are open to
all forms of participation. We are looking for people to come between mid
April and
October. We are still figuring out housing, and will ask for some rent/food
money, but are open to working things out. There is some space indoors and
ample space for tents.

Finger Lakes to be Gas Storage Transportation Hub of North East?

2011-04-11 Thread Michael Burns
From: Kate Bartholomew kbart...@wgcsd.org

Seneca at a Crossroads Forum

being held at the
Watkins Glen High School Auditorium
on Thursday. April 14th
from 7-9pm.

This Forum is being held to inform the public about how out of state
Inergy LP plans to store hundreds of millions of gallons of LPG
(liquefied petroleum gas) in salt caverns right next to and under
Seneca Lake. They also plan to store nearly a hundred million gallons
of very salty Brine in a 14 acre open pit on the steep slope above the
lake.

I think this is the most significant threat to our Finger Lakes today
and is directly related to NY State's Marcellus Shale gas and the
hydrofracking that they think is imminent. Please plan on attending
this event and learn the facts surrounding this project. Please
forward this email to everyone you know, share it on Facebook, shout
from the hilltops.

As Inergy says on their website, they want the Finger Lakes to be the
Gas Storage and Transportation Hub for the North East!! Well, I say we
don't want them to turn the land we love into an industrial wasteland!!

If for any reason you can't attend in person, we will be streaming
live on the web. Please wait out the short infomercial at the beginning.

Ithaca Freeskool Call For Classes

2011-04-15 Thread Michael Burns
From:Shira Golding shiragold...@gmail.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

We Are All Teachers!
Ithaca Freeskool invites members of the community to submit class
proposals for summer session

ITHACA, NY – April 14, 2011 – Ithaca Freeskool is looking for
passionate people who want to share their skills and knowledge in the
upcoming summer session, June 1 to August 31, 2011. Class proposals
are due on May 1 and should be emailed to ithaca_freesk...@riseup.net.

Ithaca Freeskool is a grassroots, all-volunteer community-building
initiative that creates spaces where people teach and attend classes
with one another without cost. Primarily, but not exclusively geared
towards adults, anyone can teach and anyone can attend.
Class proposals are being solicited on any and all topics of interest
to the community. Past classes include Anatomy Physiology for
Beginners, Cloth Diapering Basics, Eating Identifying Wild
Plants, Traditional Experimental Animation and many more.

Ithaca Freeskool is a way for people to have their educational needs
met without making a large time or financial commitment. We can teach
each other real skills that are fun and practical and make our social
environment rich and vibrant, explains organizer McKenzie Jones-Rounds.

The great thing about the Ithaca Freeskool, is that it brings out all
the flavors of our community. People can teach classes that play with
and explore their interests, hobbies, and issues, which can be
surprising and inspiring, shares organizer Lily Gershon.

About forty people participated in our 'Be Your Own Boss' class at
the Southside Community Center in the winter session. It was amazing
to meet diverse community members who were all interested in exploring
self-employment as a way to become more empowered and independent,
explains Shira Golding who taught the class with her partner Ari Moore
(the two run their own creative and consulting services company called
Shirari Industries).

The organizers are asking for a three-month commitment for ongoing
classes. Teachers can choose how often in that three-month period they
want to teach their class. Single-session classes are also acceptable.
The teacher should choose a day and time that works for them and find
a space. Classes have taken place in people's homes, public parks,
local coffee shops and community centers.

Organizers work with teachers to promote classes by distributing
physical calendars throughout the community and listing classes on the
Freeskool website as well as on Facebook and via appropriate email
lists. Teachers are also encouraged to create posters for their
classes and do what they can to get the word out.

Class submissions should be emailed to ithaca_freesk...@riseup.net by
May 1, 2011 in the following format:
Name of class:
Facilitator: (Name, and public contact info)
Location:
Date(s)  time(s):
A short description:
Any requirements for students (books, equipment, need to RSVP, etc.):

Third Town In Maine Passes Food Freedom Law

Third Town In Maine Passes Food Freedom Law

From:
http://www.naturalnews.com/032142_food_freedom_Maine.html

Blue Hill becomes third town in Maine to pass food freedom law
Wednesday, April 20, 2011 by: Ethan A. Huff, staff writer

(NaturalNews) Within the past several months, numerous towns in Maine,
and one
in Vermont, have proposed or enacted food sovereignty laws that declare,
plainly, that the federal government has no business telling citizens
what food
products they can and cannot buy or sell locally. Representing the
third town to
successfully pass such an ordinance, Blue Hill, Maine, recently
adopted a local
food and self-governance bill that asserts the freedom of local
citizens to
choose their own food.

In a near-unanimous vote, Blue Hill residents successfully voted to
pass the
food freedom ordinance on April 2. Besides declaring sovereignty from
government
intrusion on local food policy, the bill exempts all direct sales of
food from
having to comply with state and federal license and inspection
requirement. In
other words, local residents who grow and sell produce, for instance,
will not
be subjected to the tedious and expensive bureaucratic red tape that
rightfully
applies to factory farm operations.

[It] is a huge milestone in the struggle to protect the rights, not
only of
farmers to sell their products, but also of all citizens to eat the
food of
their choice, John Gandy, a local resident of Blue Hill and Master
for the
Halcyon Grange, is quoted as saying in the Activist Post. It is time
citizens
start defending our rights against big government and big business.

In early March, two other towns in Maine, Sedgwick and Penobscot, both
passed
their own food sovereignty laws. And the town of Barre, Vt., will vote
on its
own food freedom resolution sometime in May
(http://www.naturalnews.com/031833_f...).

Based on the Tenth Amendment to the US Constitution, the federal
government has
absolutely no authority to interfere with state and local food
affairs. The
Amendment specifically prohibits the federal government from exerting
any power
not specifically granted to it by the Constitution, and a group called
the Tenth
Amendment Center is working hard to help states break free from the
chains of
unlawful federal intrusion (http://www.tenthamendmentcenter.com/).

people living hundreds of miles from the nearest gas well—has received little

National Black Agriculture Awareness Week July 10-16, 2011

National Black Agriculture Awareness Week
Creating Opportunities for:
Awareness, Education, Outreach, and Volunteerism around Black Agriculture”

NATIONAL (June 6, 2011) Healthy Solutions, Black Agriculture, Southeastern
African American Organic Network (SAAFON), and community stakeholders will
host advocacy events, programs, and services nationally to Create
opportunities for: Awareness, Education, Outreach, and Volunteerism around
Black Agriculture for the first ever National Black Agriculture Awareness Week
during the week of July 10- 16, 2011.

National Black Agriculture Awareness Week is about recognizing, educating, and
celebrating the contribution of African Americans, and People of African
Descent, to agriculture in our everyday lives. The National Black Agriculture
Awareness Week encourages everyone to:
-Understand how the decline in Black Agricultural Producers is an issue that
needs immediate attention.
-Educate youth to want to pursue Agriculture as a viable option to build a
foundation for themselves and communities.
-Appreciate the many agriculturally related accomplishments that benefit not
just black agricultural producers, but agriculture as a whole, and impact us
on a daily basis.
-Bring awareness to food and agricultural issues in the African American
community as a whole.

Currently Black agricultural producers, farmers, and ranchers make up 1% ( 1
in 100 farmers) of all agricultural producers, farmers, and ranchers
nationally, and combine for an average of 63 years of age. This time is
critical point and time for black producers, says Tanikka Cunningham, Healthy
Solutions Executive Director, we are at a point and time in our lives, where
if something is not done soon to create more black farmers, sustain our
current black producers, and educate our communities about agriculture, we can
see the extinction of Black Agriculture as we know it. We believe that with
creation, and implementation of this necessary National Black Agricultural
Awareness Week can help plant the seeds to revitalize black agriculture while
paying respect and celebrating what black agricultural producer, farmers,
ranchers, inventors, scientist, and communities have done for agriculture in
the United States, and beyond.

This week is not just about Black Farmers, but it is a week to eliminated
artificial barriers and continue to make progress toward implementing a
National Black Agriculture Action Agenda that bring together federal, state
and local; U.S. Agriculture stakeholders, toward expanding job creation,
career development and sustainable communities around Agriculture, says
Michael Harris, publisher of Black Agriculture.

July 21st, 6:30-8 pm: Kombucha Making Class with Kerra Quinn
Gardening may stop for most of us at the windowsill, but have you ever
farmed bacteria and yeast? If you've made sourdough bread, cheese,
yogurt, sauerkraut, or beer, then you have! We at DCG wanted to
venture into other avenues of making food, and where best to start in
the heat of summer with a cool, sweet, refreshing, fizzy drink like
kombucha?? Kombucha is a fermented sweet tea drink made from a SCOBY:
a Symbiotic Collection Of Bacteria and Yeasts. According to some, it's
a super healthy drink; to others, it's just tasty. If you'd like to
come and learn how to make it yourself, please RSVP by replying to
this email. The first 10 RSVPs will get a free SCOBY to take home from
the class to start making their own kombucha! If there are more, you
will be put on a call list to get a SCOBY as soon as one grows. Bring
a quart canning jar with a lid ring or rubber band.

Fall Online Courses for Beginning Farmers Open for Registration!

2011-09-21 Thread Michael Burns

NEWS FROM THE SMALL FARMS PROGRAM AT CORNELL

TOPIC: Fall Online Courses for Beginning Farmers Open for
Registration!
DATE: For immediate release, August 22nd, 2011
CONTACT: Violet Stone at 607-255-9227 or v...@cornell.edu
ONLINE:www.smallfarms.cornell.edu/pages/news/

Fall Online Courses for Beginning Farmers Open for Registration!

The growing season is still in full swing, but here at the Northeast
Beginning Farmer Project, we're already thinking about education
season. This Fall we'll be offering 7 online courses - including 4
new topics - to help you continue your farming education. As always,
our courses are taught by experienced Cooperative Extension educators,
farmers, and other specialists. Courses are typically 6 weeks long,
cost $175, and include both real-time meetings (online webinars) and
on-your-own time reading and activities. We do not offer any academic
credit, but those who successfully complete a course will receive a
certificate and are also eligible for Farm Service Agency (FSA)
borrower training credit, which can improve eligibility to receive a
low-interest FSA loan. Read more
http://nebeginningfarmers.org/online-courses/

We've got several courses that will help you build the invisible
infrastructure of your farm business:
•
Our introductory-level course for those still in the exploring and
early planning stages, BF 101: Square One, is back, to help you get
clear about your goals, skills, and available resources.
•
If you're well beyond that stage and ready to write a full business
plan, sign up for the BF 202: Planning to Stay in Business course,
which will help you prepare to seek funding from banks and other lenders
•
Need some guidance setting up financial recordkeeping systems? Then BF
104: Financial Records is for you.

On the production side, we offer:
•
BF 120: Veggie Farming - back by popular demand, this jam-packed
course has now been divided into two parts (with BF 121 being offered
in January). BF 120 covers the planning, budgeting, site selection,
and planting, while BF 121 will pick up where BF 120 leaves off and
take you through considerations in season-long care, harvest, and
marketing.
•
Raising poultry is a popular enterprise for many small farmers, so
this Fall we're introducing a new course, BF 130: Poultry Production,
to cover the basic requirements of producing and profiting from
chickens, ducks, and turkeys.
•
Before you sink a lot of money into equipment, consider taking BF 105:
Machinery and Equipment, another new course designed to help you weigh
your options and make smart decisions about what's best for your farm
scale and situation.
•
BF 110: Soil Health returns again this Fall to introduce growers at
all levels of experience to practical on-farm applications of soil
health concepts. This course will again incorporate an optional in-
person field day at an amazing farm in Northern NY that will
demonstrate improvement of soil health on a working farm.
To learn more about each course, please visit
http://nebeginningfarmers.org/online-courses
. From this site you can see our full calendar of courses, learn more
about our instructors, see answers to Frequently Asked Questions, read
details for each course, and even visit a sample online course.

Courses often fill very quickly, so don't miss your chance to sign up
today!

Development of new online courses has been partially funded by the
USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Program, project #2009-49400-05878.
Course coordination is provided by the Cornell Small Farms Program,

New Report: Grassroots Groups Expose Bias of NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo's Fracking Advisory Panel and Environmental Groups

2011-09-21 Thread Michael Burns

Independent Coalition of Citizens Against Fracking

For Immediate Release September 21, 2011

Grassroots Groups Expose Bias of Cuomo’s Fracking Advisory Panel in
New Report

Contact: Carl Arnold, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego Gas
Drilling Opposition Group (CDOG): 347-254-0527 (cell); 718-788-5944
(land line)

Report available at GasMain.org

CALLOUT: The collusion of some of the big environmental groups, as
well as the incestuous connections between the industry, Governor
Cuomo’s advisers and vendors hired by his administration and his
environmental regulatory body, are a major threat to representational
government in New York State.

New York State’s recently named Hydraulic Fracturing Advisory Panel is
stacked with appointees who have already made clear they’re on the
side of the gas industry’s plan to industrialize the state, say
grassroots organizations from around New York. The panel was
established by Governor Andrew Cuomo’s DEC commissioner Joe Martens in
early July—just a week after the governor ended the de facto statewide
moratorium on hydraulic fracking.

In a report released today, the grassroots groups show that the panel
is dominated not only by industry representatives and industry-paid
academics, but also by representatives of national groups that claim
to be working to protect the environment but actually are on record as
being promoters of so-called “natural” gas.

“The large national organizations’ coziness with polluting industries,
Albany and Washington explains their repeated betrayal of grassroots
efforts to protect communities and the environ ment,” said Robert
Jereski of New York Climate Action Group, a grassroots environmental
organization focused on climate change and ending industrial logging
of old growth forests. “These national groups were chosen by Cuomo
because he knew he could count on them to support the false notion of
‘safe’ fracking.”

Members of grassroots environmental, civic and community organizations
from across the state, who have been educating themselves and others
about fracking for several years, are sure the Advisory Panel’s
forthcoming report will contain no surprises.

Finger Lakes-based Lisa Wright, a longtime activist on shale issues,
pointed out, “New Yorkers and most people throughout the world who
have looked closely at unconventional gas development know that
fracking for gas is seriously problematic. Organizations that call
themselves ‘environmental’ need to stand up for our communities and
act like forward-thinking stewards of the earth, not shale-gas
salesmen.”

Cecile Lawrence of Tioga Peace and Justice, Green Party NYS 2010
candidate for U.S. Senate and 2011 candidate for Tioga County
Legislature, commented, “Andrew Cuomo has always been vague regarding
his stance on the fracking of the state. Through the makeup of this

grassroots organization, made up of people whose lives and livelihoods
are at stake, shows that Cuomo needs an education as to whom he was
elected to represent.”

Carl Arnold of Chenango, Delaware, Otsego Gas Drilling Opposition
Group (CDOG) also sees pro-“safe” drilling agendas driving some of the
larger, supposedly green groups represented on the panel. “Some groups
surely know that drilling can never be safe, yet are fudging on a
ban,” he said. “This contradiction is made clear when one examines the
connections between multinational polluters, large financial and law
firms, the oil and gas boys and some well-known NGOs that claim to be
protectors of the environment. Those connections raise the obvious
questions: What do they receive from the deep pockets of the oil and
gas industry? How can they work with those folks?”

The focus of many allied upstate and downstate activists is Part 2 of
a just-released report (available at gasmain.org) on the Cuomo
advisory panel members who were purportedly appointed to represent the
environmental movement.

Adds CPNY’s Kate Bartholomew of Schuyler County, “Even with our huge

Cortland Native Brings New Film on Biofuel Alternatives to Region this
Weekend

The Finger Lakes Bioneers, in association with Sustainable Cortland
and SUNY Cortland, present the Cortland premiere of FREEDOM, a 90-
minute documentary film by Josh and Rebecca Tickell. The film explores
an array of greener fuel solutions and technological alternatives to
address the dilemmas of our fossil fuel-dependent society. The
national tour of the Freedom eco-bus, visiting around 50 cities, is
stewarded by Boise Thomas, a young Cortland native who went west and
has developed and hosted programming for Discovery Communications'
channel Planet Green and for the G Living lifestyle network. He will
participate in the audience QA after the film along with
representatives from Sustainable Tompkins and Sustainable Cortland.
Other local groups advancing the community conversation about our
ecological 'footprint' will be tabling.

The 90-minute film will screen at 7:30 PM Monday, October 10th. Public
is invited and admission and parking is free. Location for both events
is the Corey Union on the campus of SUNY Cortland. From 6-7:30 the
traveling bus, which doubles as a clean-energy laboratory and a
“green” mobile entertainment system, will be open for tours in front
of Corey Union.

The FREEDOM TOUR (http://thefreedomfilm.com) is a nearly four-month
excursion across the US that focuses on displacing gasoline with
renewable alternatives. The FREEDOM BUS is traveling to movie
theaters and colleges across the US and into Canada supporting the
release of the FREEDOM film. The bus has been retrofitted to carry
18 solar panels, an E85 bio-fuel engine and power generator, energy
efficiency, wind, solar and water displays, eco-building materials and
a projection system for outdoor viewing and presentations. The film
is produced by the filmmakers of the 2008 Sundance Audience Award
winning film Fuel.

There will also be screenings of the film and visits by the bus at
Cortland High School where Thomas graduated and at Onondaga Community
College which he also attended. These will occur on Friday, October
7th. The film screens on the OCC campus at 1:30 PM in Storer
Auditorium. The bus will be parked there for tours. Boise Thomas will
be available to meet with public and press at all events.

There may be more screenings in the area so stay tuned to the Finger
Lakes Bioneers website: www.wemakeourfuture.org for updates.

Finger Lakes Bioneers has hosted two regional conferences and helped
link central New York audiences to the work of Bioneer innovators
(www.Bioneers.org
). This year's film series in Auburn, Cortland, Elmira and Watkins
Glen seeks to connect communities across our region on topics related
to our shared future.

The 22nd annual Bioneers conference will be held October 14-16 in
Marin County, California. It is a leading-edge forum and
environmental conference that brings together social and scientific
innovators. This year's speakers include Phillipe Cousteau, Amory
Lovins, and Gloria Steinem.

Feedback requested re: possible NE regional permaculture database

2011-11-04 Thread Michael Burns
Greetings, all!

Over the years and at gatherings small and large, permaculture-
inspired folks in the Northeast have often expressed a desire to be
able to more easily access, search, and share information about
Permaculture-related opportunities and activities in our region.

The Permaculture Institute of the Northeast (PINE) wants to help
design a solution/strategy to meet this need and would like to hear
your feedback on the idea of a searchable online tool. What kind of
content would you like to have at your fingertips? What would you want
to be searchable? And what would you want to share? For now, we’re
calling it a ‘database’, but we understand it will evolve or change
form based on your feedback and input.

If you choose to participate, please help us keep this project moving
by responding to our Request for Feedback Survey by Thursday, November
17. PINE will be reviewing feedback in late November and come back
with proposals for community consideration. All feedback will also be
made public/available with names removed.

Fruiting Trees Shrubs Pruning Workshop presented by FLPCI (March 3, 2012)

2012-02-08 Thread Michael Burns
Fruiting Trees Shrubs Pruning Workshop
with Akiva Silver

presented by the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute

March 3, 2012
1-4pm
at Ecovillage at Ithaca

How do you prune your fruit trees and shrubs?
Have you avoided pruning because you don’t feel confident in your pruning
skills?

Well, you’re not alone! This pruning workshop, led by Akiva Silver, will
initiate and deepen your skills in the art of pruning. Most of the day will
entail being outside, working with backyard fruiting trees and shrubs that
might look just like yours--some are old, overgrown, and need pruning to
restore health and fruiting ability, some are young and need only minimal
pruning. You’ll leave this class with a newfound confidence to work with your
trees for better health and production.

Please dress for the weather, especially to stay warm. Wear sturdy boots.
Bring gloves and good quality pruning shears, loppers and saws if you already
own them.

Sliding scale fee: $15-40 per person
All proceeds cover the cost of this event, and any surplus supports other
educational events organized by the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute.

About the Instructor:
Akiva Silver’s approach to teaching stems from his work as a primitive skills
mentor, his deep knowledge of our local ecology, and dedication to connecting
people with their environment. Known widely as “the tree guy”, he has worked
for a native plant nursery, a tree service, and on fruit orchards. He has been
assisting Ecovillagers to plant and maintain tree crops on Ecovillage land.

Location:
Ecovillage at Ithaca is located 2 miles to the west of Ithaca on route 79.
Please obey speed limits once you leave highway 79, and yield to pedestrians
and bicyclists. Park only in the visitor’s parking lot or along the field on
the north side of the road.
Meet at 100 Rachel Carson Way, Ithaca, NY, which is the Common House of the
First Neighborhood.

Register at: http://FingerLakesPermaculture.org to reserve your spot in the
class.

NY Small Farms Summit: Feb. 29, 2012. Register Now!

2012-02-13 Thread Michael Burns
From:Violet Stone v...@cornell.edu

Small Farmers: Shape Your Future!
Register Now for the 2012 NY Small Farms Summit

Register now for the 2012 NY Small Farms Summit! The Summit will take place
Wednesday, February 29th, from 9:30am – 3:30pm, with lunch provided.

What is the NY Small Farm Summit?

The Summit is an interactive meeting with an opportunity for all participants
to take part in lively discussion, both locally, and across the state. The
goals of the Summit are to increase visibility of small farmers and their
needs, encourage local collaboration among regions, and to prioritize emerging
opportunities to enhance viabilities of small farms in New York and the
Northeast.

Who should attend the Summit?
Farmers, educators or agricultural service providers, farm businesses, policy
makers, students, and members of the community who are interested and
committed to a vibrant small farm sector in NY.

What can I expect?
In the morning, we will hear from two 2011 recipients of Small Farms Program
grants to understand how ‘stakeholder’ feedback turns into meaningful projects
that have direct benefit in the ‘field’. Then, we will hear from two farmer
speakers about the visions they have for the short-term future of small farms
in their regions. We’ll also have a brief visit with Dean Boor, from the
College of Agriculture and Life Science, to learn more about how Cornell is
supporting the small farm sector. In the afternoon, we will work in small
groups to evaluate emerging opportunities and prioritize investments to
enhance the viability of small farms. We plan to end the day with a list of
top priorities that can inform small farm research, education and policy over
the next 5 years.

Why should I participate?
The New York Small Farms Summit is the only event in the state that brings
together the entire small farm community. You should attend the Summit if you
are interested in voicing your ideas, if you enjoy networking with others, or
if you want to learn more about supporting small farms.

How do I register?
The Summit will take place in 5 locations across the state. Sign up at the
site nearest you. The event is free to attend and lunch will be provided.
After you register, your site host will be in touch regarding directions,
parking information and an agenda for the day. See contact information below.

Pre-Summit Survey
Please take the survey, regardless of your attendance at the Summit. It helps
to identify and prioritize issues you care about! The link to the survey is:

Organic Grain Farm, Mill, and Bakery Apprenticeship - Ithaca, NY

2012-02-29 Thread Michael Burns
From: Sara E Worden sara.e.wor...@gmail.com

Subject: Grain Farm, Mill, and Bakery Apprenticeship - Ithaca, NY

http://www.farmergroundflour.com/

We are looking for an apprentice who is interested in learning more about
organic grain production, processing, and distribution through a unique
collaborative relationship between a farmer, a miller and a baker. The
apprentice will work primarily on Oechsner Farm, but will also have
opportunities to work with near-by Farmer Ground Mill and Wide Awake Bakery.

Oechsner Farm has 600 acres under organic grain production and grows many
varieties of wheat, along with corn, buckwheat, rye and spelt. The grain is
milled and distributed through Farmer Ground, a mid scale mill operation 10
miles from the farm. Wide Awake Bakery uses the flour to bake artisanal breads
and distributes through local markets and a bread CSA.

The apprentice will have the opportunity to learn about all three areas of
production. We would like to work with someone who has some experience (or at
least a serious interest) in organic farming and is looking to specialize in
grains. Applicant must have ability to work long days doing physical labor and
enjoy working independently as well as a part of a team. Some machine/tractor
experience is preferred, however, we will train the right person. Willingness
to be near and/or operating loud, heavy machinery is a must.

Apprenticeship is April through November. The schedule is five days per week,
40-50 hours per week with one week off during the season. Housing, some food
(bread, eggs), and a stipend will be provided. There is a small kitchen garden
where the apprentice can grow his or her own vegetables. High-speed wireless
Internet is available on the farm. Having your own vehicle is required to
travel between the farm, mill, and bakery. We are located in the heart of the
Finger Lakes Region and you will be able to connect with and explore other
innovative agriculture projects in our area.

Please send a cover letter telling us about you and why this apprenticeship
interests you, three references, and resume to:
grainapprentices...@gmail.com. We prefer that applicants who seem like a
good fit come for a working visit in March before hire. Thank you!

Tompkins County residents are freeing themselves from their addiction to
fossil fuels, demonstrating just how accessible and effective renewable
alternatives can be.

After the screening, Shira will be joined by fellow alum Dominic
Frongillohttp://dominicfrongillo.org (Town Councilor and Deputy Town
Supervisor of Caroline New York) and Art Weaver (CEO and founder of Renovus

Ithaca College permaculture project needs help right now (this hour!)

I just received a call from Karryn Olson Ramanujan who is with a small crew
building a hefty pergola between Williams and Phillips Halls on the Ithaca
College Campus. Apparently they have two huge black locust postd weighing at
least 200 lbs. that must be lifted and dropped into holes in the ground. Their
small and dedicated crew are out there now and have found that they are simply
not strong enough to do it. If you are in the area and could devote a half
hour sometime in the next hour or two, please give Karryn a call at
607-339-1153. The students have a lovely vision to bring a beautiful food
forest to a central location on the campus that has a particularly drab,
uninspired and unused patch of landscaping and gardens. Your brief donation of
muscle-power would be a great help.

2012-04-13 Thread Michael Burns
Wanna build soil? Like working with lots of fun folk?

The Ithaca College Permaculture Garden is doing our soil amendment work party
this Sunday April 15 from 12-6pm near Williams Hall.

We'd love your help with shoveling compost and building growing beds. If you
have a pickup
truck and wouldn't mind driving a few loads of compost from the big pile to
our garden site, we'd sure appreciate it! We'll have shovelers and
wheelbarrows on both sides so you only have to do the driveby! But if you want
to get dirty, we'd be proud to have you. Please bring gloves. If you want to
bring a shovel, heavy duty rake, hoe, etc. please do, but mark it with your
name.

Thanks for your support!
Karryn

You can contact me at 273-2282 or kar...@fingerlakespermaculture.org

You can park in the visitor lot http://www.ithaca.edu/map/#parking and walk to
the south east side of Williams Hall http://www.ithaca.edu/map/ On the day of
the event, call my cell if you need help with directions or parking: 339-1153

Living Downstream at Watkins Glen, May 1, 2012 Sandra Steingraber speaks film showing

2012-04-23 Thread Michael Burns
From:Nicolas Vaczek n...@clarityconnect.com

Tuesday, May 1st, 7 p.m.
Sandra Steingraber
and film of her book Living Downstream
will be at the downtown Glen Theater,
Watkins Glen, NY
$5.00 admission

Local Groups Will Host Film and Discussion on Responsible Planning at
Glen Theater on Tuesday, May 1st at 7PM

Community leaders and residents are invited to a special event screening and
Watkins Glen premiere of Living Downstream, a documentary film based on the
acclaimed book by Trumansburg author, ecologist and cancer survivor Sandra
Steingraber, Ph.D. She has taught biology at Columbia College in Chicago,
held visiting fellowships at the University of Illinois, Radcliffe/Harvard,
and Northeastern University, and served on President Clinton’s National
Action Plan on Breast Cancer. Dr. Steingraber is currently Distinguished
Visiting Scholar at Ithaca College in Ithaca. At the May 1st event she will
be giving a talk and be available for book signing.

With Schuyler County and surrounding towns reviewing their comprehensive
plans, many local citizen groups are asking community decision-makers and
citizens to be mindful of the impact heavy industry will have on the Finger
Lakes region. The Finger Lakes Sierra Club Group and Gas Free Seneca are
co-sponsoring an event with Finger Lakes Bioneers to foster learning and
communication within the region regarding heavy industry and what it means to
be Living
Downstream.

The film is being shown as part of a regional film series organized by Finger
Lakes Bioneers, a program of Sustainable Tompkins. We've been partnering
with local groups since last fall, said Nick Vaczek, the series coordinator,
and we've found that people really enjoy watching
films on challenging issues and innovative solutions, especially when that's
followed by a chance to discuss how that connects to hometown endeavors.
More details about the film series are at www.wemakeourfuture.org .

Dr. Steingraber has a strong bond with Watkins Glen. Her son, Elijah, was
born in Seneca Lake water. Steingraber will attend the screening and make a
short presentation, answer questions, and do a book signing. Community
leaders and decision-makers throughout the region have been personally
invited to attend.

“Our region faces economic and environmental challenges. The area is being
considered for hydrofracking, gas storage and transport, and frack-related
industry. We need to be informed, to learn together, and to work together
to formulate a vision for the future of the
region,” said Yvonne Taylor, co-founder of Gas Free Seneca. “Our goal is to
provide an opportunity for the community to engage in a respectful, open
dialogue about the connection between the health of our bodies and the health
of our air, land, and water.”

What is Permaculture?

This workshop will present permaculture as a framework for holistic,
sustainable thinking and planning in the home, garden, and urban/rural
landscapes. Concepts discussed include ways to take concrete actions to reduce
your impact on our planet and how permaculture practitioners can work for
social justice. We will also spend time discussing a designated space for a
demonstration permaculture garden near the Brooktondale Community Center
gardens to teach basic principles of a permaculture design.

Karryn Olson-Ramanujan, our guest presenter from the Finger Lakes Permaculture

Volunteers needed for FLPCI project this Sunday

2012-06-22 Thread Michael Burns
This Sunday, Jake Delisle and I are pouring the new concrete floor for the
FLPCI kitchen floor. The two of us will work well into the night if we are
alone. However, a half-dozen FLPCI friends and alumni could make this very
easy. We'll start in the morning and continue until finished.

If you can use a shovel, we have plenty of grub, drink, and laughs. Bring
gloves. RSVP if possible to ensure adaquate victuals.

Ithaca corn crop mob (now!) for public school cafeterias

2012-08-27 Thread Michael Burns
From:Audrey Baker audreyze...@gmail.com

There are thousands of ears of corn (up to 100,000, says Farmer George) left
to glean on the fields at Early Bird Farm, and they'll be good for the next
2-3 days! Denise Agati, the School Food Director for Ithaca School District,
says she would LOVE to freeze and later serve whole corn on the cob in the
cafaterias for the first time this year! And she'll do it if we bring her
local ears...

Who is free to pick some CORN Monday or Tuesday (or even Wednesday) evenings
this week??

Farm Business Planning Online Course with Cornell Small Farms Program, Fall 2012

2012-09-10 Thread Michael Burns
For immediate release: Sept. 4, 2012
Contact: Erica Frenay, e...@cornell.edu 607-255-9911

Get Help Writing Your Farm Business Plan this Fall

It is rare for a farm to be an accidental success; having a written document
laying out the farm's goals, marketing strategies, financial projections, and
operation is essential to demonstrate the feasibility of the farmer's plans. A
business plan is also a must-have for anyone seeking loans or grants to help
fund their farm's development.

This Fall, you can get personal guidance in writing your farm business plan by
taking an online course offered by the Cornell Small Farms Program.

*BF202: Planning for Sustainability - Writing Your Business
Plan*http://nebeginningfarmers.org/online-courses/all-courses/bf-202-planning-for-sustainability/is
a fast-paced course covering one section of the business plan each week.

Through weekly webinars, you'll hear from farmers, business management
educators, and bankers about what makes a good business plan. You'll get
personal feedback on each section of your business plan as you complete the
weekly homework. The course begins Thurs. Oct 4 and runs for 6 weeks through
Nov. 8, with evening webinars every Thursday. The cost is $200. Registration
closes when the course fills up or by Sept 26, whichever happens first, so
don't delay or you might miss this opportunity.

Students who took the course last Fall have used their completed business
plans to obtain farm mortgages, equipment purchase loans, and operating loans.
One student said, I basically knew very little prior to taking this course.
But now I feel confident about how to write a business plan, how to research
the areas that are projections/pro-forma statements, and the components of
each section.

If you've felt intimidated by the process of writing a business plan, or if
you plan to seek outside funding for your farm, sign up now for this unique
opportunity to join a virtual community that will help you write your farm
business plan this Fall. For more details visit
http://nebeginningfarmers.org/online-courses/all-courses/bf-202-planning-for-sustainability/

This course is only one of many offered over the Fall, Winter and Spring by
the Cornell Small Farms Program and Cornell Cooperative Extension. For the
full course menu, visit http://nebeginningfarmers.org/online-courses.

volunteers!

Here is the schedule so far. Please reply to this email and let me know how

RSVPs are most helpful for this project, as there is quite a bit of
coordination involved.

Ithaca Elmira: Rony Lec, Mesoamerican Permaculture presents Oct 15-17

2012-10-08 Thread Michael Burns
Guatemalan Permaculture Teacher to Present on Food Sovereignty

Dates: October 15th - 17th, 2012

Ithaca, NY (Ithaca College, Cornell University)
Elmira, NY (Elmira College)

via http://fingerlakespermaculture.org

Ronaldo Rony Lec Ajcot will be coming to the Finger Lakes Region discussing
his permaculture work to improve food security in Central America.

His trip is sponsored by Cornell University’s Latin American Studies Program,
the Committee on U.S. Latin American Relations (CUSLAR,) the Ithaca College
Latin American Studies and Environmental Studies Departments and the Finger
Lakes Permaculture Institute.

After Guatemala's civil war ended in the early nineties, Rony returned to his
town, San Lucas Toliman, seeking a project to enrich the land and the
community. He found that permaculture allowed him to use his Kaqchikel Maya
agricultural traditions with ecological design skills to help build food
sovereignty in his coffee-growing community of small farmers. Rony Lec is now
considered one of Latin America's foremost permaculture teachers. He and the
Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute have been teaching ecological design and
permaculture to indigenous communities across the Americas for the past
decade.

Permaculture is an ecologically and socially conscious design method to create
sustainable, regenerative systems for our homes, farms, and workplaces.
Permaculture activists aim to empower people and their communities to design
using ecological principles and their own talents to meet basic needs.

Want basil for pesto?

2013-09-10 Thread Michael Burns
From: Audrey Baker audreyze...@gmail.com

Hi everyone,

Love the idea of pesto in your freezer, ready to pop into meals all winter and
spring? Just need a bulk source of basil to inspire that date with the food
processor?

The Wood's Earth farm is bursting with (organic) basil! It is being chopped and
used fresh in school meals and in BJM Elementary snacks, and our summer team
made and froze about seven gallons of pesto in the district's central kitchen
for use in school lunches!

There is still have a lot of basil! We would like to sell it, picked to order,
to the community for pesto making. Proceeds all go to Wood's Earth Living
Classroom, a project of the Center for Transformative Action 501c3.

$10 for one over-stuffed grocery bag of basil-on-the-stem.
$15 for two bags.
$20 for three bags.
*Orders or multiple bags can be spread out over two-three weeks (pending a
killing frost)

Picked to order! Convenient pick up locations, (1) downtown at the Just Be
Cause Center, 1013 W. State Street (scheduled), or (2) on campus at Cornell
Farmers' Market on Thursdays from 11a-3p.

Reply to this email or call the number below to order your basil. Get it while
it's here!

FRESH BASIL PESTO RECIPE:
Combine these ingredients (or your own variation) in a food processor, until
chunky or smooth, as you like it:
2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 medium sized garlic cloves, minced
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
[1/3- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan-Reggiano or Romano cheese]
[1/3 cup pine nuts or walnuts]
[1 teaspoon lemon juice]
FREEZE in ice cube tray, then pop out cubes into a freezer bag. Throw cubes
into pasta or veggies at the last minute of cooking; serve over baked potatoes;
or thaw cubes in the fridge for a sandwich spread all year long.
Makes one cup.

incorporate design work on real sites and hands-on experience with strategies
like hot composting, mushroom inoculation, marking contours, and the siting of
buildings and ponds on the landscape. Our field trips to Finger Lakes area
urban, farm, and homestead demonstration sites give students real life examples
of the success and challenges of applied permaculture design.

Our alumni repeatedly describe their 15 days of permaculture immersion as a
paradigm-shifting, inspirational opportunity to reevaluate the systems and
designs of their work, homes, and community projects. They appreciate the
chance to study permaculture in our temporary learning community at a small
off-grid farm. Graduates leave with new skills as well as a new network of
colleagues that support their work creating regenerative livelihoods and homes.

Beyond Green with New Roots: Ithaca, NY. Tonight! 7-8:30pm

2014-03-05 Thread Michael Burns
New Roots Charter School hosts panel to discuss the imperative to go Beyond
Green to prepare youth for a sustainable 21st century.

Wednesday, March 5, 2014
7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Sustainability Center
111 N. Albany St. Ithaca N.Y.

A panel of educators and students will explore the “paradigm shift” in
education our youth need to meet 21st century challenges.

Responding to climate change, fossil fuel dependency, and economic trends
requires curriculum that goes “beyond green” to develop students as community
leaders and entrepreneurs who respond to emerging challenges and opportunities
as systems thinkers that take both human and ecological needs and limits into
account.

The evening’s panelists are trustees, staff, and students who are founders of
New Roots Charter School, Ithaca’s charter high school for education for
sustainability and justice. Chartered by the State University of New York in
2009 to provide a “living laboratory” of education for sustainability at the
secondary level, New Roots Charter School was inspired by the research-based
State Education and Environment Roundtable’s Environment as Integrating Context
for Education model. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation
named New Roots Charter School the Top Green High School in 2011-2012, just two
years after it opened.

Panel participants include:
- Dr. Jason Hamilton, Chairman of the New Roots Charter School Board of
Trustees; Associate Professor Chair, Environmental Studies Science, Ithaca
College
- Dr. Peter Bardaglio, Vice Chair of the New Roots Board of Trustees; Senior
Advisor, Second Nature; and Coordinator, Tompkins County Climate Protection
Initiative
- Tina Nilsen-Hodges, Principal and Superintendent of New Roots Charter School
- David Streib, Science Teacher Education for Sustainability Program
Coordinator
- Rosemary Gloss Ben Purdy, Current and Former New Roots Students

Community members, educators and students interested in learning more about
sustainability education are welcome to attend. The panel discussion will be
hosted by Sustainability Center, a community inspired gallery and meeting place
located in downtown Ithaca.

FLPCI Alum practices permaculture for food justice in NY AL

2014-03-28 Thread Michael Burns
Anna McCown was raised as a Southern Baptist in subtropical Alabama. Yet now we
find her as a queer southerner surviving the cold winters of upstate New York
learning how to appreciate the summertime while honing her permaculture
organizing skills…

After her Permaculture Design Certificate course with the Finger Lakes
Permaculture Institute (FLPCI), Ms. McCown went back to Alabama and started
Magic City Agriculture Project (MCAP) with friends from neighborhoods all over
Birmingham… This year, Anna and her partner will live and work for Giving
Ground Farm in Trumansburg...

Read more at: http://fingerlakespermaculture.org/?p=2434

NOTE: Giving Ground Farm is offering CSA shares that give back to the community
including us! For each half-share purchased from the farm, a $25 donation is
sent to FLPCI to support our permaculture education efforts. If you live near
Ithaca or Trumansburg, NY and want to enjoy and support a permaculture-inspired
family farm, buy a share and mention the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute to
help us out.

Pigstarter: Network of permaculture graduates bootstrap new venture with crowdfarming

2014-04-16 Thread Michael Burns
Graduates of the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute's permaculture design
course want to demonstrate that young farmers with intelligence and drive but
no start-up funds or land can crowdfarm their way into a successful business.

They are offering a lifetime discount for any donation over $10!

http://fingerlakespermaculture.org/?p=2527

The Pigstarter project is to provide the means to create food sustainably in a
small-scale, highly productive agricultural system.

They will supplement our their own background in pig production with techniques
from Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm, Sepp Holzer of the Krameterhof, and other
leaders in sustainable and permaculture-based animal husbandry. Rotational
pasturing, on demand water, consolidation of local food waste systems, and a
finishing on apple pomace will yield a high-quality, locally grown pork.

When the season ends they plan to create a how-to guide that can assist other
*entre-pig-neurs* in starting pork operations in their own areas.

Permaculture Community Supports Permaculture Classes in High School...

2014-05-19 Thread Michael Burns
Help us fund our permaculture class...

New Roots Charter School in Ithaca, NY is offering a 4 day permaculture
intensive to its students. I will be teaching a small crowd of students at
Cayuta Sun Farm (site of the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute's summer
design course.) New Roots' curriculum and mission is to teach students to
advocate for environmental sustainability and social justice. This crew of
mostly juniors and seniors have been learning knowledge and skills that make
them ideal candidates to grasp the fundamentals of permaculture.

However, funds have been too tight for the transportation costs for this
learning event. So I have turned to the broader permaculture community for help
through a short Indiegogo campaign:
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/support-a-high-school-permaculture-course

The result: We have met 93% of our goal in one week… Thank you!

Thanks to the 13 funders for helping us come so close to our final goal. New
Roots Charter School now has nearly all funds needed for the class, while
donations and referrals still needed to finish the campaign. Thank you also to
all who broadcasted our appeal.

New Roots Charter School is proud of the electives and “expeditionary” learning
that our students enjoy. As a small and often under-funded charter school, most
of our resources must be devoted to the meeting core requirements of high
school classes. Fortunately, our mission is often supported by the community.
The permaculture community is now part of the many networks of allies that
support our school.

If you have not already done so, we still have to reach our goal and you can
still donate.

Also, it is still crucial to spread the word to hundreds more to make 100%.
Share this message and this link to put us over the top:
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/support-a-high-school-permaculture-course

Note: Any funds not spent (or beyond our $500 goal) will be saved for
permaculture education through the New Roots Farm-to-School program.

Thanks again,

Michael Burns

FARMING THE WOODS: An Integrated Permaculture Approach to Growing Food
Medicine in Temperate Forests

Meet the Authors...
Get your signed copy...
Hear a presentation on their new work...

Join Ken Mudge and Steve Gabriel

November 19, 2014
6 to 8 p.m.

Tompkins County Public Library
Ithaca, NY

Local authors, teachers and researchers Ken Mudge and Steve Gabriel love the
forest. They met in the MacDaniels Nut Grove in 2009 when Steve took Ken’s
Practicum in Forest Farming class at Cornell University. Through the frameworks
of forest farming and permaculture they found a way to see the forest for more
than just the trees. The two began working, researching, and writing together
which resulted in a new book from Chelsea Green Publishing.

Farming the Woods combines Ken’s decades of research and international
agroforestry experiencewith Steve’s permaculture and farming knowledge to offer
readers a plethora of concepts and ideas for growing a range of non-timber
crops in their woods. Mushrooms, medicinals like ginseng and goldenseal,
fruits, nuts, and wood products along with design and management considerations
are covered in this book which has been called:

“A must-read for anyone interested in agroforestry, forest gardening, or
utilizing forests for specialty crops. ”
—Martin Grawford, author of Creating a Forest Garden

Join Ken and Steve for an evening to celebrate the book and learn about some of
these crops and the farmers around the US growing them.

Books signed by the authors will be available afterwards for $35.

The event is free.

Preserved Its Food Heritage, and Inspired a Movement*
 shows how towns and
regions can reclaim and protect their communities, health, and economy — by
supporting a transition to diversified, small-scale organic systems and
small-scale local businesses. Featuring multimedia artist Douglas Gayeton’s
“information artworks,” Ackerman-Leist’s presentation is accompanied by a
pop up art show.

creating Hugelkultur beds, rainwater catchment, digging a pond, growing
trees to plant on the property, starting to manage the woodlot, building a
woodshed, and making very good use of the piles of woodchips and leaves our
friends have delivered. Indoors we've been: building a root cellar, cooking
up a storm, processing and preserving foods we've grown, building a
hearth/installing a woodstove, doing planning for this growing season
(including designing an outdoor kitchen and ordering chickens and mushroom
spawn), and generally fixing up this 138-year-old house, making it a more
efficient and interesting living space!

The current residents are the land owner, a musician in her 50s who works
from home for a non-profit film company, and a couple in their twenties who
are farmers, artists, and cooks. We all share a passion for organic
gardening, natural building, community living and the arts. Our vision for
the land is to use Permaculture principles to create a bountiful and
beautiful property that can serve as a model, and we're starting to
organize workshops that we hope will be of interest to the larger community.

Our spacious 4-bedroom house sits at the edge of the village of
Trumansburg, with woods, a large pond and creek access. The kitchen, living
areas and bathrooms are shared by all, and we cook and eat together often
(and we eat meat). There is plenty of room here for people to do their own
projects - either for generating income or simply for fun!

We are looking for a housemate/landmate(s) who shares these ideals and
principles, and who is excited to become a big part of making this place a
joy to call home :) A 12-month commitment is important to us. We want
someone who is ready to dive into this project and add their gifts and
talents to the equation. Beyond that, terms are negotiable! The rent amount
will vary ($650-750, plus some utilities) depending on which bedroom you
end up in (either 150 or 250 sq ft), and there's an option for partial
work-trade. Our timing is flexible on when you could move in. Our housemate
who is moving out hasn't found a place yet, but you could likely move in as
soon as March 1st, if necessary. Pets are negotiable. We have one amazing
indoor-outdoor cat named Radar, and we are open to having another cat
and/or a dog on the property, as long as everyone can get along :)

Ideal candidates will have some skills/knowledge to share and experience
living in community. The most important factors are: like-minded
individuals that are interested in learning and sustainability, willing to
work hard, can be professional when needed, and most of all - have a
positive outlook!

If this living situation sounds intriguing to you, please send us an email
that tells something about yourself and why you are interested in living
here. We look forward to meeting you!

Cheers,
Eva, Sylvie & Liam

—>“…delivers a beautiful portrait of permaculture's potential in both rural and
urban settings… does a great job of making permaculture more accessible. Not
only does it make a compelling case for why permaculture solutions are needed,
but it also highlights a number of people involved in permaculture, as well as
some of the solutions that are working for them. The film presents a range of
permaculture practices implemented across a variety of locations, from rural to
urban and suburban areas, and the interviews with 'boots on the ground'
permaculture practitioners offer plenty of food for thought about its
applications and potential impact.” -TreeHugger.com<http://treehugger.com>

—>“The feature documentary Inhabit explores this human potential with a diverse
range of examples from the Northeastern United States. Each illustrates how
permaculture can be applied to suit it’s environment, in a way that regenerates
the surroundings rather than just minimize impact." -

The COVID-19 pandemic is a critical moment to reflect on the broken systems
that run our world. This film goal is to inspire and empower people. Costa
Boutsikaris, the filmmaker, hopes that by offering the film for free it will
have greater impact. If you are able to give a donation, all funds go towards a
current film now in post-production called INHABITANTS: An Indigenous
Perspective

Watch free this week: Inhabitants

2021-03-22 Thread Michael Burns
If you saw the movie inhabit by Costa Boutsikaris, you will want to find time
in the next few days to watch the newest film he coproduced:

*Inhabitants: An Indigenous Perspective*

Co-presented with the National Museum of Natural History

Presented by the Hollomon Price Climate Change Series

https://watch.eventive.org/dceff2021/play/603d4f87bee5720045b5cf9c/60099ee3431371003eaf85f9

Follows five Native American Tribes across deserts, coastlines, forests, and
prairies as they restore their traditional land management practices. For
millennia Native Americans successfully stewarded and shaped their landscapes,
but centuries of colonization have disrupted their ability to maintain their
traditional life ways. As the climate crisis escalates these time-tested
practices of North America's original inhabitants are becoming increasingly
essential in a rapidly changing world.
