Help Tools

2010-10-13 Thread Pam Reichert
I have been using WebWorks epublisher Pro version 9.2 to convert our
FrameMaker documents into online help for our applications. Recently my
laptop started having problems and they are moving me to a new laptop. The
writer who installed epublisher on my laptop is no longer with the company
and we can’t find the CD with a serial number. I noticed a version of
WebWorks comes on the FrameMaker 7.2 CD but it is called WebWorks Standard.
I thought maybe this is where the WebWorks came from. Is WebWorks Standard
the same as ePublisher pro? Even if it is, no serial number I find on any
of our CDs seems to work with it and Adobe can’t seem to help me. When I go
to the WebWorks page I can’t get help there either because I don’t have a
maintenance contract. I don’t think WebWorks actually *wants* customers.
When I try to find out how much it costs to buy a new copy, no prices are
listed unless you have a sales person call you. We don’t have phones in
our office.

I am pretty fed up with it all and am thinking of moving the help to a new
platform. Can you suggest another help platform that works well with
FrameMaker files and looks similar to ePublisher? I need to produce online
help in both .chm files and html files.

Toc cross-ref markers

2010-10-13 Thread Menahem Rosen
When using Mif2Go to create html (chm) Help from my FM files, I have found many
cross-reference links that do not work. Upon inspection of the html source
code, I see that the problematic links begin #Ran_toc155... instead of
an2525860.htm#Ran375...

In the FM file, double-clicking on the x-ref displays the cross reference
dialog box, showing the Cross-Ref marker type, and the _toc155... marker.
Using this dialog box to change the marker type and link to the paragraph does
not make a permanent change: double-clicking again on the x-ref displays the
old _toc marker.

The only solution I have found is to delete the offending marker in the target
and then create a new cross reference from scratch. The KB questions are how
did the problem occur, and how can I be sure that it won't re-occur? The
practical question is how can I quickly replace the offending cross references
with proper ones? (Obviously, doing so manually is a very tedious task,
especially since the target may be referenced by multiple cross-references in
the book.)

TIA,

Menahem R.

Hi Pam

No, WebWorks Standard is not the same as ePublisher Pro.

There is a Yahoo wwp-user group, so you can post your question there:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wwp-users/

Quadralay (Ben Allums) is actively participating in that group, so I'm sure
you will get help there.

Or you may find some answers in their wiki:

Re: Toc cross-ref markers

2010-10-13 Thread David Spreadbury
Rosen,
Sounds like you may have copied cross-references from an original location to a
new location. This brings along with it the original source ID marker. You
can't have more than one unique ID marker, else you get wierd cross-reference
issues.

There is a tool from West Street Consulting that may fix your problem. Check
out the XRef Wizard (http://weststreetconsulting.com/WSC_XRefWizard.htm). Only
$35.00 (for one user). You can download a trial version so see if it helps. It
has proved to be a life saver.

Also, refer to the support information (Appendix D) in the Mif2Go User's Guide.
Jeremy should be able to steer you in the right direction, if it is a Mif2Go
option issue.

Pam,
Mif2Go (www.omsys.com). They have a free demo that you can try before you buy.
It works as a Frame plugin and works with just about any version of Frame.
Features and all that info on what it can convert too is available on their
website. Costs less than $300, plus a yearly maintenance/upgrade fee. It will
do everything that WebWorks can do, and probably more. If you are doing DITA,
they have a Dita2Go also.

ePublisher Pro and WebWorks Standard are two different products. ePublisher Pro
is the current WebWorks variant. The Standard version was shipped with Frame
7.2, more as a teaser I think.

If I was a betting person, I would bet that you will be hearing from Jeremy
this morning with similar words on Mif2Go.

This is discussed in the User's Guide, par. 4.2.11,
Eliminating Word-generated cross-reference markers.
Word creates a very large number of these markers,
and if you use Frame's native Word import (NOT a
good idea!), they are retained in Frame. By default,
Mif2Go identifies and ignores these markers.

The trouble is that apparently someone made Frame
cross-references using them, instead of the correct
method of having Frame create new cross-reference
markers for the destinations.

As am immediate workaround, you can tell Mif2Go not
to ignore the _tocN markers:

[HTMLOptions]
RemoveWordTocMarkers=No

The xrefs will then work, but you will also have
many (perhaps thousands) of extra, pointless anchors
in the HTML. They are harmless, but do bulk up the
files.

You can avoid this problem in the future when you
import files from Word by bringing them in as plain
text using Copy in Word and Paste Special in Frame.
Then retag per your Frame template. It takes a bit
longer to do it that way, but it eliminates numerous
issues you'll have forever from the Frame import.

Re: Help Tools

2010-10-13 Thread Art Campbell
Webworks standard is an early version of ePublisher. The Standard and
Pro essentially mean that one cannot modify templates; the
professional version can.

In any case, whatever tool you use is likely to achieve the look and
feel of your help file by manipulating CSS style sheets, not by
proprietary coding, so I think you have severral choices for help
tools.

If you've done massive amounts of tweaking to the ePublisher
templates, that may be your easiest way to go. Along with that, I
can't believe that their customer support department can't give you a
new code There must be documentation on the purchase somewhere --
a PO or credit card info.

However, if you're staring from scratch, I'd go with either MIF2Go
from omsys.com or RoboHelp, as in the Technical Communication Suite.
Both are strong and well-integrated. I prefer MIF2Go for most projects
because it's simpler for me to use (I'm a config file kind of guy) and
bulltproof once it's set up. And their customer support is exemplary.
But RoboHelp comes with fancier, spiffier templates and it's designed
to integrate well with Frame at the menu level.

I know MIF2Ggo and Robohelp have free eval versions available. I think
it's waning in popularity recently, but a number of people are big
fans of Flare, so that's a possible third avenue to go down, although
that's more of an authoring package rather than a conversion tool to
pull content from Frame.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Art

Special characters conversion in MIF

2010-10-13 Thread Pat Christenson

Hi -

I have to save a number of FrameMaker 9 files into 7.2. I'm having a
problem with special characters such as en em dashes and spaces.
They're converting into strange 3-character sequences. This happens
when I use MIF2Go, Toolbox's Document Transfer (FM-MIF) and Frames
Save As MIF 9.0.

They convert cleaning if I use Frame's Save As MIF 7.0 but since I
have a large number of files, I'd prefer to use MIF2Go or Toolbox.

MIF2Go's documentation has information on mapping individual
characters but it seems silly to have to set up a map for every
special character. I can't find anything about using MIF2Go to save
as MIF 7.0.

Any help?

Thanks.

FM9: correcting CMYK colors in PDF following save-as

2010-10-13 Thread Edmondson, Becky
Using FM9.0p237. I am a longtime user.

I will be using FM9 to create PDFs for 4-color printing. Ach, the headaches! I
know I have to use Save-As and de-select Convert CMYK Colors to RGB. (I know
that this means FM uses its own Unix Postscript generator, and not the Industry
Standards Distiller options that I *wish* it would use.)

I do indeed get a pure CMYK PDF. Onscreen, the colors look good, but my printer
tells me the color values are wrong. Example: CustomBlue is defined as
69.18.23.1 in FM, but it comes out as 68.8,32.2,0,0 in the PDF-very different
color.

Unless someone knows some FM fix for this, I will be correcting colors in the
PDF.

My question: Can people recommend the best software for this? Is Acrobat Pro 9
good enough? should I get the PitstopPro plugin? Other? We can't buy anything
too expensive-can go up to $800 max.

I hope that this is an OK question to ask. My apologies if it is not, please
ignore if that is the case.

Many thanks for your help,
Becky

Subject: Help Tools

I have been using WebWorks epublisher Pro version 9.2 to convert our
FrameMaker documents into online help for our applications. Recently my
laptop started having problems and they are moving me to a new laptop.
The
writer who installed epublisher on my laptop is no longer with the
company
and we can't find the CD with a serial number. I noticed a version of
WebWorks comes on the FrameMaker 7.2 CD but it is called WebWorks
Standard.
I thought maybe this is where the WebWorks came from. Is WebWorks
Standard
the same as ePublisher pro? Even if it is, no serial number I find on
any
of our CDs seems to work with it and Adobe can't seem to help me. When
I go
to the WebWorks page I can't get help there either because I don't have
a
maintenance contract. I don't think WebWorks actually *wants*
customers.
When I try to find out how much it costs to buy a new copy, no prices
are
listed unless you have a sales person call you. We don't have phones
in
our office.

I am pretty fed up with it all and am thinking of moving the help to a
new
platform. Can you suggest another help platform that works well with
FrameMaker files and looks similar to ePublisher? I need to produce
online
help in both .chm files and html files.

Re: FM9: correcting CMYK colors in PDF following save-as

I haven't had to do this myself in 9, but I remember that people are
using Acrobat Pro to set the colors; no plug-ins required.

If I were you, and you wanted the complete scoop, I'd post for details
in the Adobe FM user-to-user forum. Arnis, the group moderator, is an
expert in print prep and getting 9 to work acceptably. There are also
several similar threads in the archives.

I do indeed get a pure CMYK PDF. Onscreen, the colors look good, but my

Unless someone knows some FM fix for this, I will be correcting colors in the

My question: Can people recommend the best software for this? Is Acrobat Pro

anything too expensive-can go up to $800 max.

I hope that this is an OK question to ask. My apologies if it is not, please

 Many thanks for your help,

Change it to:

Adobe's Technical Communication Suite. It has FrameMaker and RoboHelp

Pam,

I'm sorry you're having such trouble getting in touch with WebWorks.
You can reach Sales and Customer Service via email (either
sa...@webworks.com or customerserv...@webworks.com).

Regarding pricing, pricing starts at $795 for a one year subscription to
ePublisher. Perpetual licenses are also available. Sales can give you
all the details.

One thing I will point out is that though ePublisher 9.2 is EOLed, the
9.2 formats are still supported as part of ePublisher 2010.2. What that
means is that you can continue using custom code without concern for
code conflicts. This was made possible in our 2009.3 release, which
added legacy format compatibility options. If you have no custom code
in your project, then you can easily switch to the latest, greatest
format versions that ship with 2010.2.

FM9 suggestions - why it keeps locking up

2010-10-13 Thread Mary Holder
Hello Framers,

I am running FM9 on a laptop AND on a PC, both with Windows7.

FM9 works fine (98% of the time) on the laptop, but I cannot get it to run
more than 30 minutes on my PC without having to exit and restart FrameMaker.
Frustrated does not begin to describe my feeling!

The most common reason to exit is that the designers no longer work. I can
apply a style and apply and apply, and it doesn't take. I cannot see my
formatting, so I cannot continue. This is true for all of the designers.
(This is only true on the PC.)

Another thing it does is just stop responding. I look at Task Manager and it
says FM is running, but it does not respond to keyboard or mouse commands.
Also, just tonight, the document I was working on went completely black. A
few headings came back up, but that was it. I had to close FM using the Task
Manger.

I just reopened the document that died, and none of my changes were saved,
nor was an auto file created.

Does any of this make any sense at all? I usually have Internet radio
playing and Outlook in the background, but according to Task Manager I've
got plenty of resources.

Why would it work on the laptop, but not the PC? I'm just about to trash it
and go back to FM8! Please help.

Thanks,

"Toc" cross-ref markers

2010-10-13 Thread Menahem Rosen
When using Mif2Go to create html (chm) Help from my FM files, I have found many
cross-reference links that do not work. Upon inspection of the html source
code, I see that the problematic links begin "#Ran_toc155..." instead of
"an2525860.htm#Ran375..."

In the FM file, double-clicking on the x-ref displays the cross reference
dialog box, showing the "Cross-Ref" marker type, and the "_toc155..." marker.
Using this dialog box to change the marker type and link to the paragraph does
not make a permanent change: double-clicking again on the x-ref displays the
old "_toc" marker.

The only solution I have found is to delete the offending marker in the target
and then create a new cross reference from scratch. The KB questions are how
did the problem occur, and how can I be sure that it won't re-occur? The
practical question is how can I quickly replace the offending cross references
with proper ones? (Obviously, doing so manually is a very tedious task,
especially since the target may be referenced by multiple cross-references in
the book.)

"Toc" cross-ref markers

This is discussed in the User's Guide, par. 4.2.11,
"Eliminating Word-generated cross-reference markers".

RemoveWordTocMarkers=No

Help Tools

I'm having a
problem with special characters such as en & em dashes and spaces.
They're converting into strange 3-character sequences. This happens
when I use MIF2Go, Toolbox's Document Transfer (FM<->MIF) and Frame"s

I can't find anything about using MIF2Go to save
as MIF 7.0.

Any help?

Thanks.

Pat Christenson

Special characters conversion in MIF - SOLVED

I found the answer on Omni Systems page.

Add

UseFrame9MIF=No

Under FDK in the Mif2Go .ini file.

I should've looked there first. /embarrassed/

All,

Thanks everyone for your suggestions with my Help tools question. I will
definitely look into Mif2Go and I've used RoboHelp in the past, although
it has been quite a few years so I'll need a trial download. I will also
give WebWorks another try...maybe I can get some help from them.

Again, thanks for your input. I do appreciate it!

Don't be so hasty and judgmental. WebWorks is a fine company with an
excellent product. They have a Yahoo group (I think it's called ePub)
that you can post your question to. Or call them, they will help you.

If nothing else, send an email to Ben Allums, allums at webworks.com, I
think. I've had a lot of great experiences with them. Don't abandon
them because of this.

ePublisher Pro is the current WebWorks variant. The Standard version was
shipped with Frame 7.2, more as a teaser I think.

Help Tools

2010-10-13 Thread Davis, Jessica D.
Pam,

The basic Web Works that shipped with Frame 7.2 may work for you *if*
you have all of the conversion templates from ePublisher and you don't
modify anything in the template that will break the conversion rules.
It's basically a compiler. The idea was you need one license of Pro to
build and maintain your conversion templates, then you distribute those
templates to other writers. They could use the pre-defined templates
with the standard WebWorks option to generate help.

As for other conversion tools, there are several out there: Robohelp,
MifToGo, Madcap Flare.

We currently are using MadCap Flare 5.something and it works, but it's
been a little painful getting everything to work correctly. The graphic
conversion settings are counter intuitive. If you select the option to
not convert the graphics, which is usually what you do when you want to
preserve the quality, the graphics come out smooshed. Instead, you have
to tell it to convert and then you set up a PDF job options with super
high quality graphic rendering parameters and have it use those job
options. There's also a known issue in which Flare doesn't like
non-breaking characters, so we have to import templates before the
online help build to replace all variables and x-ref formats with
versions that do not contain non-breaking characters. It's kind of a
pain and their tech support didn't seem to understand the problem or the
work around, but they told me they opened an issue for it. The forums
seem to know more about the product than the tech support department.
I'm thinking about using FrameScript to automate this preparation task.

I've heard good things about Mif2Go and Robohelp.

Thanks,
Jess

I had a similar issue with a recent WebWorks upgrade which I solved by
calling them: 877-693-2967. It bothered me that that was required but
it got me to where I needed to be. WebWorks changed licensing models
between 9.2 and ePublisher and that might be an issue but it could be
easily solved with a call.

Many thanks for your help,
Becky

Excellent point Art! However, if folks are looking to deliver to
non-HTML targets, ePublisher can handle that as well given its ability
to deeply restructure your content. RTF, PDF XSL-FO, and Wiki targets
are good examples of this.

I believe Pam's issue is that WebWorks no longer makes EOLed product
builds available for download. I'm not sure license keys are the problem.

All excellent tools. I will point out that we've been working really
hard to make ePublisher a great tool for single-sourcing both your
content and your design. I'd just ask that you compare our latest,
greatest ePublisher 2010.2 against current MIF2Go, RoboHelp, and Flare
packages.

FM9: correcting CMYK colors in PDF following save-as

I haven't had to do this myself in 9, but I remember that people are
using Acrobat Pro to set the colors; no plug-ins required.

If I were you, and you wanted the complete scoop, I'd post for details

several similar threads in the archives.

See if changing this setting in maker.ini fixes your problem:

   GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK=Printing to

Change it to:

   GetLibraryColorRGBFromCMYK=None

No phones in your office? Does not compute.

They have an interesting approach to pricing, and one that I'm not too
keen on. They size up your need and price you according to how many
seats and what types of technologies you need. They're taking a
CMS-like approach to product sales.

Adobe's Technical Communication Suite. It has FrameMaker and RoboHelp
(with integration between the two, which you don't get if you buy the
products stand-alone) plus Acrobat, Captivate and Photoshop.

It'll take some getting used to, but I've found it to be a decent
alternative to WebWorks (and I've been a WebWorks user/expert since
1998).

Truth be told, I haven't looked into their pricing in a while, mainly
because my clients haven't needed it. But it was certainly the case
last time I looked into pricing.

Pam,

I'm sorry you're having such trouble getting in touch with WebWorks.
You can reach Sales and Customer Service via email (either
 or ).

False, at least as of a few months ago. You can also buy an annual
subscription for one person for $800 or $900.

Thanks,

Mary Holder

My mistake. I see Pam also needs her license key. Unfortunately, to
maintain EOL product status, we cannot re-issue keys for EOLed products.

Pam, you might be able to locate the keys if you can still run
ePublisher on the old system.
