I have tried Wash via MIF with no success.
Does anyone have suggestions as to how this might have happened or how I

Hi Joanne,
Flare claims to allow users to output to FrameMaker. If you don't have
FM, perhaps it will be worth the while or cost to have someone create
the FrameMaker files for you.

Even/Odd Page Layout Issue

2010-01-20 Thread David Schor
Hi Alison,

Where is your End of Flow marker located?
On each page of the document, do a Select All On Page (Ctrl+A) to see
if any additional elements (e.g. graphics frame with invisible border)
are on the pages.
Check whether there is an additional text flow in the doc (perhaps you
have an empty graphics frame or text inset that overlaps the master
page text column, meaning that is not apparent if you are not
searching for it. Perhaps there is a table that ends flush at the
bottom of the page pushing the next line to the next page.

I've been creating a new User Manual based on an existing Book (originally
created by a consultant). I want each Chapter to have a minimum of 2 pages
(Right and Left sides, like any regular book).

I know I'm missing something simple, but with a virtually empty Chapter 1 (it
has Headers, Footers, Chapter title and an End of Flow marker) I have 4 pages
instead of 2. My Appendix A is correct, as is my Chapter+.fm and my
Appendix+.fm. I've compared as many settings as I can think of but I can't
 see where this is controlled.

The settings under Format Page Layout Pagination (for all 4 docs) are as
 follows:
Double Sided, 1st Page Side: Right
 Make current Page Count Even

The settings under Format Page Layout Master Page Usage (for all 4 docs)
 are as follows:
 Use Master Page: Right/Left
 Apply to: Current Page (1)
 Even (Left) Odd (Right)

Note that the unselected option Pages: x to x lists First Page as 1 and
Last Page as 4, so FM is acknowledging that there are actually 4 pages in
this document - even though there should only be 2.

 What setting am I missing?

Try to make your PDF by printing to a PS file in the Adobe PDF printer

FM to Acrobat conversion disaster

2009-05-18 Thread David Schor
Desperation time. I have a situation that's turning my hair white.

Trying to PDF a 8.27 by 11.69 from my FrameMaker 7.2 docs via Distiller 9
to Acrobat 9.
For some reason, the PDF comes out 11.00 instead of 11.69 cutting off my
headers and footers.
I've searched for all locations of Distiller job obtions on my hard disk,
and all 3 locations have the same joboption file content.

However, in FrameMaker, in the PrintPDF SettingsPDF Job Options list box,
the list of job options is incomplete. Somehow, I suspect that the problem
may lie here somewhere. When I click set, I get a message stating The
selected PDF job option does not exist in the current installation. Either
create this job option or select an available job option. Continue?

AARGH!

Please help. Deadline has passed and it's not funny.

TIA very much,
David

John,

I just installed a new license for Acrobat 9 Pro Complete Version on my

Installing Acrobat 9.0 taking FOREVER??!?

2009-04-22 Thread David Schor
John,

I just installed a new license for Acrobat 9 Pro Complete Version on my
computer here at work yesterday, and I noticed that the folder for the
program in the Program Files folder is a whopping 1.85 GB, containing 6,416
files in 882 subfolders.

Now you know why installation seems to take forever.

All the best,
David

Hi Menahem,

I would emphasize to your outsourcers that it's important that they do all
modifications within the full directory structure of the project. It's
obvious that in the case you described, the outsourcer edited the file in a
different location.

There were no problems opening the files, displaying graphics, and the
cross-refs were good. Just as I had expected.

Problem: After discovering a mistake in one of the files, I asked the
agency to re-do it. That is, just one file of the book. They sent me the
fixed file, but the references to all of the graphics (and x-refs) don't
work, because the path of the referenced file (which is still right) is
preceded by the entire path on the computer that generated the fm file.

One solution: I saved the problematic file as mif, opened it in Notepad,
and deleted the part of the path that I didn't need.

There were a lot of graphics, so It took some time (even using Replace
All), and Notepad nearly hung on me. When left for a while, it
eventually came back to life and finished the job.

 Questions:
 1. Is there a faster, better way to do this? From within FM?
 2. I don't know how this problem was caused, but I would like to suggest
something to the translation agency so that this can be avoided in the
 future. Any suggestions?
 3. When experimenting in the mif (text) file, I noticed that the
referenced graphics are represented by two consecutive lines. For
 example...
   ImportObFileDI
 `c\graphicsc\E260c\Edenc\Photosc\Eden260_cropped.png'
   ImportObFile `graphics/E260/Eden/Photos/Eden260_cropped.png'
What solved the problem for me was changing the first line
 [ImportObFileDI `c\graphics...]
I did not have to change the second line. So, my question is: what is
the second line for, and should I have changed this too? (Could it be
for opening the files on Unix systems?)

 TIA for any tips suggestions.

Error generating WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output in Flare v4.2

2009-03-05 Thread David Schor
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to make a trial run during my first Flare v4.2 project. I
imported FrameMaker 7.2 files as my sources, and for now at least, graphics
are included. However, I received an error message, both during FM import
and now, during WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output generation:

Compiler (Internal Error): Found the path
 C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Acrodist.exe
to Adobe Distiller but the executable doesn't exist.
Adobe Distiller is required for converting Adobe FrameMaker graphics.
Aborted.

Problem is that Acrobat 7.1, not 8, is installed on my PC. During FM import,
the process continued and I was able to open the sources with the graphics
in Flare. However, when I attempted a trial run at generating output, this
error appeared and aborted the task. No output.

So, is Flare v4.2 only support Acrobat 8, meaning I must purchase an upgrade
in order to work with Flare? Or is there a way to fix this problem in the
configuration?

System parameters: Windows XP Professional SP3, FM 7.2, Flare 4.2, Acrobat
7.1 Professional, Acrobat Distiller 7.1

TIA,
David

2009-03-05 Thread David Schor
Well, I just disabled the option Auto-reimport before 'Generate Output'. I
was then able to generate the WebHelpPlus output.
Apparently, the error below does not prevent me from importing source files
but it does stop everything when the import is included with the output
generation.
Still, I don't like that error message.

It seems to me that the FrameMaker forum is not the place to be looking for
Flare support.

Why not? Work in FrameMaker is an integral part of this process, and the
problem is specifically happening with import of FrameMaker files into
Flare, which I believe that some other members of this forum are doing also,
occasionally. It's perfectly reasonable to believe and hope that there are
FM users on this list that can answer my question.

Re: Error generating WebHelp/WebHelpPlus output in Flare v4.2

2009-03-05 Thread David Schor
I don't understand you people. When did this become the Forum for FrameMaker
as Stand-alone only? By your definition, this list should also be out of
bounds for anyone using FrameMaker with another program.

So please, no more FrameMaker/Webworks questions please. Those of you who
want to import Word files to FM or export FM to Word, don't waste our time.
To the writer who just asked about highlighting CorelDraw graphics in FM to
appear in Acrobat, sorry too many other applications in your question.
Mif2Go users? Go away and bother Jeremy, and leave us alone.

\end sarcasm

Seriously, for the first time, I am disappointed with this list and I've
subscribed to it for a long time already. I turned to this forum for help
because work in Framemaker is a significant part of the workflow in which I
had a problem. The error occurs during import of FRAMEMAKER files. So what,
pray tell, is so irrelevant here that some of you have to flame me? If you
don't know the answer and don't care, then please be quiet - no shame in
that because Flare is a relatively new program and many people have yet to
work with it. But as long as FrameMaker is being used in conjunction with
other products and in the production of content in multiple output formats,
then questions regarding the FrameMaker relationship to the workflow are
perfectly legitimate on this list and not a waste of time. Be tolerant
enough to realize that other workplaces use FrameMaker in different ways
than yours. It's not 1994 anymore, but 2009.

Importing FM content to Flare - Changing image import location

2009-03-04 Thread David Schor
Hi Jon,

I see that I can filter the view, so it makes it easier to select the
graphics in order to move them to the Images folder. However, the problem
remains that apparently, Flare by design, is importing the graphics together
with the HTM output files into the same directory (even its Help admits that
"it's messy" (LOL) so perhaps this is something that Madcap will fix in a
future release (I'm working in v4.2). I would like to be able to choose the
location for importing the graphics.

Thanks very much! All the best,
David

Printing Error

2009-03-02 Thread David Schor
Angela,

You write that you're working off a server. Perhaps the path to the images
in question is broken or was changed. If the image is in by reference, make
sure that the image's location is accessible from the server, or else change
the location.
If the images are embedded, perhaps they're draining too much memory.

Can't you move the footer text box (on the Master Pages) down a short

Re: Index question

2008-01-16 Thread David Schor
A couple of simple troubleshooting steps:

Is the format you're referring to exactly named Heading1 in the template?
Remember that these should be written identically.
Also, check the Paragraph numbering settings in the book and remember to
update the book's numbering before generating the index.

Conditional Text problem on Frame 7.1 on Win XP Professional

2007-09-04 Thread David Schor
Is there a bug or limitation regarding FrameMaker Conditional Text Tag names?
I received a base document with several different conditions
reflecting various model names within the same product family.
Examples of tag names are:

ABC2024
ABC224D
ABC208
ADE208
ADE224
AFG208
and so on

After setting the system to show the first ABC condition but hide the
latter two, I generated Help files in Webworks but the other ABC
conditions showed.

In an experiment, I changed one of the conditions to ABC_208, and lo
and behold, ABC_208 stayed hidden. However, ABC224D remains in the
document when it shouldn't. According to this pattern, would I have to
change this to ABC__224D for FM to recognize the difference?

And what if I need to add additional variations to a name like
ABC2024G and ABC2024F? Does Frame not recognize the difference?

Hope you can help me,

Thanks,
David

This document has many cross-references, so I really want to use the Save As

TOC problem

2007-05-24 Thread David Schor
Surbhi,

I've never done this specific task, but try the following:

1. Add a blank paragraph to another file. Give the format a unique
name and don't use it anywhere else in the book.
2. When you generate the TOC for the first time, include this format.
3. In the TOC's Reference page, define the paragraph's format with a
page break, and add the string, "this page has been intentionally left
blank". You may have to play around with the properties to get the
line to appear as you wish.
4. Update the book again.

OT! European budget airlines

2007-05-23 Thread David Schor

Anyone have any experiences flying on European budget airlines, such
as RyanAir, EasyJet, Transavia, etc.? These are the airlines that
typically charge 30-50 euro per person compared to hundreds of euro to
fly on the larger airlines.
If you have, please share with me any pros (other than ridiculously
low price) and cons.
Please reply to me off-list, since this is definitely OT!!

Thanks very much,
David

Somewhere in WW, you probably have to define the reference to the
Filename marker (we use a different marker name where I work). Check
in the Style Designer.

WebWorks documentation, I believe, has this procedure somewhere.)

Then, for each heading that will constitute the beginning of a new file
in HTML, add one of these markers. For the marker text, use what you
want WebWorks to assign as the name of the file, minus the .htm. For
instance, in the example you gave, you would place a marker in the
Installing Foo heading and enter foo as the marker text. Add another
marker in the Configuring Bar heading and enter bar as the marker
text.

When you generate the output with WebWorks, like magic, WebWorks knows
to assign these as the file names for the output files.

Like I say, it's been awhile, but I am pretty sure this is right (though
I feel compelled to add the caveat that I have always used WW Pro, not
Standard... Not sure if the Standard version does it any differently).

The marker type does not have to named Filename. You can name it
anything you want as long as you define it also in WW. Once again, I'm
not sure where in the application. I'm not at work today, but I think
Style Designer is in the Options menu or similar.

Re: FrameMaker files and CHM

Karen,
WWP will generate a separate HTM file per heading (that is defined for
starting a new topic). The TopicAlias marker provides the name of the
HTM file.
Only the generated HTM files should interest your developer - it
should not matter to him/her whether the FrameMaker source is in a
single file or in multiple files.

I suspect the problem is with our control's software. At the very least,

We're using a custom .h file that holds our topic IDs and the control
screen IDs (Map IDs). Example: #define IDH_ScreenName 123. The text is
the same as what we put in the TopicAlias marker. The screen ID is the
number assigned to the screen by the software developers.

I used Framescript to rename a conditional tag before I send a set of
book files out to someone else (renamed it to something making more
sense.) For this email, consider the tags as OLDTAG and NEWTAG.

I then deleted all unused condition tags using the PGFWhopper plugin.
OLDTAG showed as one of the tags that was deleted, and OLDTAG no longer
exists in ANY document in the book (I checked each file to make sure).
When I check the text with the condition applied, it shows as NEWTAG

However, when I go to show/hide conditions at the book level, OLDTAG
still shows there, and NEWTAG does not. I've generated/updated the book
file, saved all the files, closed and restarted Frame, and it's still
happening.

Any suggestions?

Re: Font size in Frame cross ref

2007-02-12 Thread David Schor

David,

Open the Cross Reference dialog box, select the relevant format, and
click Edit Format.
In the Definition field, check whether a specific character building
block, or a paragraph building block with a specific para format, is
included in the format's structure. If yes, this is probably causing
your problem. If you remove the offending specification, the
cross-reference will take the formatting of its host paragraph.

Re: First Time Indexer

2007-01-15 Thread David Schor

Fabio,

You have to place a marker at every location that you want to appear
in the index. Keep in mind that you don't necessarily have to place
every single instance of a term or expression in the index. Only refer
readers to the places where they will find relevant information
related to the indexed item.

Good luck,

Re: book paginating woes

2007-01-09 Thread David Schor

Laura,

It's very likely that in the Book, the files are defined to start on
right pages in a double-sided page setup. If this is the case, Frame
will always add a blank left page, if necessary, in order to maintain
consecutive running pages as it generates and updates the Book. In
such settings, Frame will not end a file on a right page, and then
continue the next file on a right page. It must account for a left
page, even a blank one, in between.

If you don't want any empty pages and don't care which side the files
start, set the files in the Book to start on the next available
page and to delete empty pages. Then, save the Book and reupdate
it.

I've gone into my master pages and tried to reapply them, I've
reimported new page layouts from files that I know work as they are
supposed to, and I've even copied the text (we're only talking one page
here of an introduction), and the new files takes on the same
troublesome attributes. This is only an 25 page document, but the
chapter files are similar to another book so I'm reluctant to put all
the text into a single file for the sake of consistency.

The only hint of a potential error that I get is that there may be
something on the page about an irregular column layout.

The specific message is that the new column layout seems to overlap
other objects on some body pages, am I sure I want to apply the new
column layout? and the specific page that is supposedly impacted. Even
though I click Yes, nothing changes. I have nothing but text on the
page, there are no residual graphics, nor residual conditional or hidden
text for that matter.

Another error message that I've seen is that there is no mapping in the
reference pages for my master page. However, I would have thought that
if there were an error in that regard that it would have been corrected
when I reimported my new formats from a good file.

Could those vague errors be complete misdirection? Any suggestions would
be most heartening.

RE: Continuous Numbering in framemaker

2006-10-17 Thread David Schor
Tammy,

If you import (by reference) the Cover File and then the TOC before the
text content, you should get the effect you're looking for. Then, update
the TOC to reflect the changed page numbers of headings in the expanded
document. Then, double-click the referenced TOC in the expanded doc and
select Update Now.
This way, whenever a content change requires a change in the TOC, you
can update the TOC file, and in the main document, simply update the
referenced TOC file. Meanwhile, your page numbering will be as it should
be.

Oops - fat-fingered some numbers in my statement. see corrections
below. Thanks!

Hi All,

I am in the process of migrating existing draft documentation in Word to
final version documentation in Framemaker. The old Word documentation
was but a single file - the first page was reserved for cover
information, the second page was Word's TOC, and the remaining pages
were the content of the document. The old numbering scheme, beginning
with the first page was Page # of #, which for a single document in
Word, worked fine. In Framemaker, I have split up this large document
into three separate files - Cover File, TOC, and the Chapter document. I
have been asked to keep the numbering scheme the same - Page # of Total
Page Count. I know how to keep the numbering continuous across the
files, but the system variable that keeps total page count is obviously
on a per file basis. For example, the singe Cover page file has no
number, but the first page of the TOC says page 2 of 4 (because it is
the second page in the book, and there are four pages in the TOC total),
so the next page says Page 3 of 4 and the final page says Page 4 of 4.
When I open the document chapter, it says Page 5 of 19, because the
first page of the content chapter is indeed the fifth page in the book,
but there are 19 pages in the Content chapter. What do I need to do to
get this to number the same way as Word - if it's possible for files in
a book? I want the first page of the TOC to say page 2 of 24, the
second page to say page 3 of 24, etc. and I want the first page of the
Content Chapter to say Page 5 of 24, etc.

TIA,

RE: Framemaker vs. Flare

2006-08-21 Thread David Schor
Sorry to chime in late. I hadn't had a chance to open all my mail since
Thursday.

First of all, we're talking a bit about apples and oranges. FrameMaker
is a desktop publishing tool while Flare is an online Help, XML-based
authoring tool. The two may work hand-in-hand in the near future. For
several months, I've understood that Flare v2.0, scheduled for release
in the coming months, is supposed to be able to support import of
FrameMaker files (not via MIFs, but actual FM files) as it does for Word
files.

Hello,

Has anyone compared the functionality of Adobe Framemaker 7.2 with
Madcap Software's (formerly Robohelp) Flare?

I am trying to decide which one to go with for the documentation for my
company. Framemaker seems to be the industry standard, but is Flare just
as good? Any thoughts?

RE: MIF question

2006-05-31 Thread David Schor
Doug,

A MIF file is an alternative form of a FrameMaker file, functioning like
an INI file for a FrameMaker document. It is an ASCII text file which
contains values describing every element of a FrameMaker FM file, such
as text, formatting values of paragraphs/characters/tables, reference
pointers and links, and more. You can open it in a Text editor such as
Notepad. It is useful for troubleshooting, or transferring an FM file
for use in other applications. Many times, I converted files to MIF in
order to change link paths on a Find/Replace basis. Sometimes,
converting a weirdly behaving FM file to MIF and then back again helps
clean the file (repeat - sometimes).

RE: Empty pages - how to delete?

2006-05-31 Thread David Schor
Suman,

1. FrameMaker is behaving exactly as it should. When you specify in your
book that all files begin on a Right (or odd) page, then logically, a
Left (or even) page must precede the Right page. You can't go from Odd
to Odd, so FrameMaker inserts the bridging page.

2. Book pagination settings override local document pagination settings.

However, for a screen PDF, the Left-Right pagination may be irrelevant.
So to prevent the automatic addition of blank pages, change the Book
Pagination settings to a Single page layout, start the files on Next
Available Page and for Before Saving and Printing, define Delete
Empty Pages. The result should be files (chapters) that start on odd or
even pages immediately following the end of the previous file.

Hello,

I created a book having various chapters and applied master pages
having double sided layouts. The first pages of all the chapters are
right sided.

The following is the specification, I provided for pagination:
Double sided, Ist Page side - Right, Before Saving and Printing - Make
Page Count Even.

While trying to delete the empty pages, I specified:

Before Saving and Printing - Delete empty pages. But this does not
solve my problem. When I update the cross-references, Index, and TOC,
these empty pages return.

I am creating a pdf from this book and these empty pages are really a
turn off...

Hello fellow FrameUsers

I've been a technical writer for about seven years and have followed
this
list off and on during that time. I've seen references to MIF files but
I
have no understanding as to their purpose or use. If someone would care
to
enlighten me, who knows, maybe I've been missing out on a very useful
tool
or resource.

Thanks for past help.

Empty pages - how to delete?

2006-05-31 Thread David Schor
Suman,

1. FrameMaker is behaving exactly as it should. When you specify in your
book that all files begin on a Right (or odd) page, then logically, a
Left (or even) page must precede the Right page. You can't go from Odd
to Odd, so FrameMaker inserts the bridging page.

2. Book pagination settings override local document pagination settings.

However, for a screen PDF, the Left-Right pagination may be irrelevant.
So to prevent the automatic addition of blank pages, change the Book
Pagination settings to a Single page layout, start the files on "Next
Available Page" and for "Before Saving and Printing," define "Delete
Empty Pages." The result should be files (chapters) that start on odd or
even pages immediately following the end of the previous file.

Subject: Empty pages - how to delete?

I am creating a pdf from this book and these empty pages are really a
turn off...

2006-03-30 Thread David Schor
And for those of us who became legal before 1980:

* Using a dial on telephones without redial or answering machines - Try
to reach someone without your finger falling off.

* Write a school project by HAND, making sure there were no crossouts or
other unsightly stain on the sheet of paper - otherwise, we had to write
the page over. Later, we could type, using white-out sheets to type over
errors.

* Doing calculations such as square roots on paper, without a
calculator. I remember the first time my 8th grade math teacher showing
us a "state-of-the-art" calculator with square root and trigonometric
functions. We were awed by the speed of the calculations while we slaved
for away for several minutes to solve each problem.

* To do well in baseball, you had to do it with your natural physique.

I can go on and on but I've got to get back to work.

Just thought you guys might enjoy this...

Hard Times related by a 30 year old.

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious
diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what
with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning... uphill BOTH
ways... through year 'round blizzards. Carrying their younger siblings
on their backs... to their one-room schoolhouse, where they maintained a
straight-A average, despite their full-time, after-school job at the
local textile mill... where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to
help keep their family from starving to death!

I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in
hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard
I had it and how easy they've got it!

But...

Now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look
around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean,
compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say
it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean,
when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know
something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in
the card catalog!!

There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter ...with a
pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in
the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to
hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had
to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually
talk over the beginning and mess it all up!

And talk of about hardship? You couldn't just download porn! You had to
steal it from your brother or bribe some homeless dude to buy you a copy
of "Hustler" at the 7-11! Those were your options!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone
and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we
didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had
no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your
bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!!
You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Play Station video games with
high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like
"Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked ass! Your guy
was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! There
were no multiple levels or screens; it was just one screen forever! And
you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and
faster and faster until you died... Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium
seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old
broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just
screwed!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15
channels and there was no on screen menu and no remote control! You had
to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were
screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and
walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon
Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you
hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you
spoiled little bastards!

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up ...we
had

Rick Quatro's SuperWebBundle includes a script titled Open All In Book

The script is probably not available as a freebie on its own, but
perhaps you can inquire from Rick about its availability.

RE: Adding a Blank Page Before/After Book Cover

2006-03-16 Thread David Schor

Try one of the following:

1. Provide the printer with separate cover files and a file for the
manual's content. Funny, I don't have a problem getting my printer
service to understand that the second side of each cover file is blank.
2. Make a PDF of a blank page, and keep it for all your projects. Before
closing the final PDF, insert the blank page after the front cover and
before the back cover.
3. In FrameMaker, start your first manual file with a blank page (an
empty paragraph followed by a page break) with double-side pagination
starting on the left. Set FormatPage LayoutMaster Page
UsageCustom=None for that page. After the last file, create a blank
page for the end.

Pearl,

One item stands out by its omission in your post and the responses until
now.
After inserting, changing, or restoring a cross-reference, you also have
to save the target file. If you close the target file without saving it,
thinking that no change was made, the cross-reference will remain
unresolved.

Hi Framers,

FrameMaker 7.0p578/Windows XP Pro

Every time I open a certain book in FrameMaker, I get three messages
telling me that three of the files (out of 17) have unresolved cross-
references and one message telling me that one of the referenced
graphics in one of the files can't be found.

Each time, I've gone into the chapters, searched for unresolved cross-
references, and re-applied them. I've also deleted the graphic and
inserted it again. The last time I opened the book, I even replaced
every cross-reference in the three files, but I am still getting the
same messages for the same files. All the other cross-references and
graphics in all the other files are fine.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what I can do about it?

Thanks.

Those ol' cross-references blues

2006-02-15 Thread David Schor
Pearl,

One item stands out by its omission in your post and the responses until
now.
After inserting, changing, or restoring a cross-reference, you also have
to save the target file. If you close the target file without saving it,
thinking that no change was made, the cross-reference will remain
unresolved.

Subject: Those ol' cross-references blues

Thanks.

Try setting the Runaround for the offending graphic to None.
BTW, Rick Quatro created an inexpensive plug-in for setting Runaround to None
throughout all graphics of a document in one shot.

The symptom sounds like the old runaround graphics bug from FrameMaker
5.5.6. But I thought that they fixed that in FM6.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Framers... FrameMaker 6 has recently developed an irritating habit. When
a page that contains an imported graphic is displayed, FrameMaker jumps
backwards for several pages immediately after the imported graphic is
first displayed.

Does anyone know why this should happen, and how I can prevent it? I am
not sure whether it happens with all documents, but it certainly happens
with all documents in a specific book.

Merge lists?

2005-11-24 Thread David Schor
If I recall, Jeremy started Free Framers a few years ago following a
conflict with Brad over certain issues.
I personally was neutral, and subscribe to both lists, although it's a
bit of a pain to cross-post and keep track of who answers from where.
Not to mention the issue of defining mail preferences when I'm out of
the office for an extended period of time.

Lisa has since replaced Brad as the main administrator/moderator of
FrameUsers. Perhaps the issues that caused the division then are more
benign between Jeremy and Lisa personally.

I think that a situation where all the Frame experts belong to the same
community optimizes the chances of finding the best solutions to user
questions and problems. To quote some starry-eyed soul in history,
"Can't we all get along?" :-) (THIS IS RHETORICAL! PLEASE DON'T FILL UP
MY MAILBOX WITH RESPONSES TO THAT ONE!)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Subject: Merge lists?

Hi...

I'm just going to throw this out and see what comes of it .. being
relatively new to both of these lists, I don't have the history to know
any better.

In a perfect world, is there really a need for both of these lists
(FrameUsers and Framers)? Are most people actually on both lists (except

for those who have a grudge against one or the other moderator)? If we
all set aside any personal differences and pride, would there be any
problem with just having one list?

It seems like most questions about FrameMaker are sent to both lists,
which is a needless waste of bandwidth, disk space, and personal time to

delete the duplicates. Sure, I can just subscribe to one of the lists
and pretend that the issue doesn't exist, but then .. "what if" I miss
something *important* on the other list?

I don't know about the logistics of merging the two lists .. obviously,
it would have to be some sort of opt-in thing .. don't want to force
anyone to do anything they don't want to do. Perhaps, it would just be a

matter of setting up a new list, telling people about it so they can
sign up or not, then close down the other two lists (we don't want to
end up with three lists). It would be great if the moderators of the
current lists could be co-moderators (remember, this is the "perfect
world").

I know of all sorts of reasons that this is a *good* idea .. I'd like to

hear reasons why it's not. Perhaps there really is a good reason to have

two lists that provide the same service to the same people.

Or .. we can just leave things as they are .. perhaps I'm just nuts. :)

Cheers!
