Context/Level Rules - Several Levels Deep

2015-06-08 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hello, Framers –

I’ve been doing really well at figuring out how to format context and level rules with my EDD. Lots of trial and error, but it has greatly improved everything.

However, I have one element giving me fits that I can’t figure out how to get it to nest properly. This is a bulleted list that falls under a note. The note is nested into an ordered letter list that is inside another ordered list. Kind
 of like this:
1. ordered
 A. lettered
 Note:

-
Bulleted

I’ve tried a context rule that lists every parent in order, level rules of various combinations, context rules that use * to include anything in between. I don’t know what I am missing in this case. If anyone is good with these rules, I
am happy to share my EDD and a chapter to help me figure out my error. Worst case, these few structures get manual overrides (I know, that’s a bad thing).

Thanks for any guidance!

Re: Character Format Issue

2015-05-01 Thread Kristy Nolan

Thanks for that advice! That parallels what Rick Quattro helped me with yesterday.

I also want to say thanks to this entire group for all the help over the years. An amazing source of information. I brag about the ability to get answers to the rest of my department (who are working in another authoring tool that takes ages to get answers,
let alone solutions). When I posted my question yesterday, I had people offering assistance within about 10 minutes. Don't doubt the power of this community!

Hi Kristy,
if the Bold font is available and the corresponding character format is defined and used correctly in the template, the only reason would be a AutonumCharFormat defined in the EDD that overrides the template (specifying a different character format).

Of course, this would not explain why you can apply another formatting, like Bold Underline...
About the tables: I could try to answer a specific question, but my range of experience with this issue is limited.

Hi, fellow Framers –

I am working on cleaning up our EDD for our manuals, Frame 11. We have 3 types of alerts (note, caution, warning) that pretty much follow the same rules, so are set up the same as much as possible. I have the caution and warning doing exactly
what I need them to do with Autonumber Format as “Caution: or “Warning: and the Character Format as “Bold Underline. Since I am trying to match (where possible) our Arbortext DTD and styles, I need the “Note: to be just Bold.

However, the bold is not showing up. I can change it to everything else, including Bold DoubleUnderline or Blue, and it displays as prescribed. Just not plain bold. Spacing all works, nesting/indenting works fine. What can I be missing?

Also, if you are good at table format structuring and are willing to answer questions, I am having trouble with those. Right now those are still just done in my template through table designer with only the very basic set up in the EDD.

Thanks for any advice anyone can give on this!

Reader XI has that functionality built in. Nothing you need to do. This makes it so much easier for us. They just can't extract or add pages.

I want my editors to be able to not only add comments, but also edit text - strike through it,

Using Acrobat Reader XI, will my users be able to do this based on the option that I am using for the Reader Extended PDF or only commenting an option? What can I do to make the

Saving as PDF Loses Elements

2013-06-05 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hi, guys!

Apparently this has been an ongoing issue with my Team across multiple books,
but no one told me. I realized because I was generating a book today. Using
Structured Frame X.

All works fine at the chapter level, but the problem is at the book level. When
saving as a PDF, we need to generate bookmarks using Elements, but they are not
available. The whole list is blank. If I switch back to Paragraphs, the list of
those is there. (I do see all of my elements at the chapter level.) Any idea
what I could be missing? All the same boxes are checked between chapter and
book Save as PDF.

Thanks!

Re: Frame 11 on MacBook Pro?

2013-05-14 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hi, guys!

Thanks for the input! Update is that I have downloaded and installed Service Pack 3 for my Windows XP, deleted all previous attempts at downloading Frame, and re-downloaded the trial using Firefox. I made sure i was strictly on a Windows side (no coherence).
Result is still no Frame. I tried to ask the online support at Adobe, but he took way too long to respond (and had to catch a flight).

I'll try again when I get back home (even though my trial clock is ticking). Making it hard to rationalize the idea of purchasing this on my own dime. As much as I love Frame, I may have to move to a different paradigm.

Truly appreciate all the input!

Reappearing Change Bars

2013-03-01 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hi, all!

I am posting for a coworker, but I have no answers or where to start either.

In our FrameMaker 10 book, we add the change bar style to cross references that
have changed for a revision. When we modify that page for a subsequent
revision, we remove the change bar style. These change bars reappear on cross
references at random. The reappearance seems to relate to the PDF process
because when I open the FrameMaker file to remove the errant change bar from
the cross reference, the change bar that appears in the PDF doesn't always
appear in the FrameMaker file.
I have run into this situation multiple times. Any thoughts?

The book is in VERY unstructured Frame, but we cannot fix that at this point
(although I don't see how that would affect this).

Thanks!

Hey, guys!

For those of you without admin rights (like me), we found a temporary work
around here. Double click the time and date that is normally in the bottom
right of your screen. Change the date to anytime in 2012. Open Frame. From here
you can either correct the date to today's correct date or leave as is.
Changing it to correct means you will have to repeat the process to reopen
Frame. Works for now (and while I wait for our Tech team to actually make any
fix even though I sent them the info).

Hope it works for you too!
Kristy

Ghost Formatting

2012-07-10 Thread Kristy Nolan

First, thanks to all who have helped with my EDD questions recently. I know I
am on the right track. A great help!

For today's question, I seem to have some formatting coming in that I cannot
figure out where it originated. These issues have to do with character
formatting, which I have set up in the EDD. The paragraph is one of the few I
have not gotten to quite work right in the EDD, so have it set up in the
paragraph catalog. When I import the EDD and style sheet into the content, all
characters look correct. However, if I apply the character to a word, it
changes size. This happens in all three of my alert types: Note, Caution, and
Warning. It does not occur anywhere else. Nowhere (that I can find) is 12 pt
related to any alert.

Here's the example. Note is a paragraph format. B737 AOM is a title that should
be italicized. If already marked TXT Italics before importing the EDD and style
sheet, stays at the correct 10 pt Arial, as is the rest of the para. When I
apply TXT Italics from the list of allowable elements after importing the EDD
and style sheet, it becomes 12 pt Arial. The italics part does work.

Any ideas where to look? Or what to fix?

Thanks for any input!
Kristy

Formatting in EDD

2012-07-05 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hi guys!

Frame 10, structured question. I am trying to clean up our EDD and can't figure
out how to designate some formatting. I have elements for Note, Caution, and
Warning. Most of the formatting is fine (e.g., font, size, weight). However,
the direction I have is single underline Caution and double underline
Warning. Not the whole paragraph, just the term. I know how to do this if I
go the style sheet route where I designate everything there.

I tried creating character formats in the EDD - one for single and one for
double underlines, but not working. May not even be on the right track there.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Kristy

RE: Unstructured to Structured: Question about retaining paragraph formats

2012-07-03 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, Lisa!

Is your EDD set up with all of the paragraph formatting or do you have a
separate style sheet? We have used both methods (and a hybrid) here. You may
have conflicting formatting rules that are causing the problems.

Subject: Unstructured to Structured: Question about retaining paragraph formats

Hello All,

FM10 - We are converting an unstructured Frame file to Structured. Due to
unfortunate circumstances, we are not able to use a conversion table (sigh).

The issue is that during the hand tagging of this file, we have to wrap the
text in the element tags in para tags to match the schema. When we wrap the
text, we lose the paragraph's formatting properties. Everything turns to body
and we have to reapply the format.

We are able to manipulate the EDD somewhat but can't stray from the structure.
We've looked at Read\Write rules but they don't appear to help in this case.
We've also looked at using the TextFormatRules, ElementPgfFormatTag options
but we have more than one paragraph style that goes to an individual element.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

BTW, everything works great when a new document is created using the template,
EDD, etc.

Thank you in advance!

Sincerely,

Autoinsert Text in Structured Document

2012-06-21 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, guys!

We are working in Structured Frame 10. I am trying to add a specific element to
my EDD (I know the basics, and am actually pretty pleased with the overall
EDD).

In our documents we have requirements to mark things with a sensitive security
information (SSI) warning. I had tried to set it up the same way we have other
elements that require a specific denotation (e.g., limitation, policy), where L
or P automatically inserts into the beginning using the autonumber format. It
inserts the SSI, but doesn't wrap the text which is several lines long.

The element itself inserts following the rules I intended, just not the text.
I'm trying to do all the formatting in the EDD. I'm sure there is a way to do
this not in the EDD with reference pages, but think there has to be a better
way.

What am I missing? Happy to share the EDD if that will help.

Thanks!
Kristy

thought it would be appropriate to post this.

Hi Everyone,

As many of you know, I was supposed to be on vacation this week, cycling
across New York State with 17 other guys. During my last few training rides,
I experienced some discomfort in my chest. It was a concern because I am in
pretty good shape with almost 800 miles on the bike so far this summer. I
had a stress test on Friday, and the results showed an 80% chance of a
blockage in one of my cardiac arteries. Monday I went into the hospital for
an angiogram, with the anticipation of having the blockage opened and a
stent put in. However, the test showed a couple of areas of blockage, one
being in an area that can't be opened with a stent. So on Wednesday around
12:45 pm, I am going to have open heart surgery with at least a double
bypass. I will be in the hospital for 3-5 days and hopefully experience a
quick recovery at home. I should be back to work late next week.

Those of you who know me well understand that I have a deep abiding
relationship with Jesus Christ. I received Him as my Savior on April 6, 1984
when I was twenty-five years old. Because He has forgiven me of my sins, I
know that when I die, I will be with Him in heaven. I am still a sinner and
don't deserve heaven, but because of His death on the cross and subsequent
resurrection, He gives eternal life to those who receive Him by faith.

That said, I am still fairly young (53), and have some young kids left to
raise. So, if you are given to prayer, please pray for Sherry and I this
Wednesday. Finally, thank you all for being a part of my life. The great
people that I work with is an important part of making my work so
satisfying.

Leads me to multiple questions:
1. At one point years ago I stumbled on a way to essentially have two
paragraphs on one line (in appearance only). Anyone know how to do that? It
is not a table, but that's all I remember.
2. Is there a way to get the proper elements to show up in one paragraph on
the reference page?
3. Is there a better way to do this?

Kristy,

Two paragraphs on one line requires setting the Run-In Head paragraph
property on only the FIRST of the two paragraph types.

Good luck

Leads me to multiple questions:
1. At one point years ago I stumbled on a way to essentially have two
paragraphs on one line (in appearance only). Anyone know how to do that? It
is not a table, but that's all I remember.
2. Is there a way to get the proper elements to show up in one paragraph on
the reference page?
3. Is there a better way to do this?

Lists of Effective Pages and Sections

2012-01-29 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, guys!

I am stumped. On Structured Frame 10, trying to create lists of effective
sections and pages. These are requirements as front matter for our documents,
two separate lists. The entire document is structured except for these lists
and the TOCs. (If there is a way to generate these in structure, I am all for
it, but not sure how to do that. Even the reference books I have don't seem to
address the two together.)

I get the general idea of how to generate the lists (Special/List of...) and
have the correct elements appearing.

I've started with the list of effective sections, where I have elements for my
chapter title, section title, and subsection title, each with its associated
revision date. On the reference page all of them are showing up as
$elemtextonly in its paragraph [e.g., RevisionDate()LOP]. When I was in
unstructured Frame, I could move these elements to a different paragraph and
still retain the piece I was looking for. If I move the current $elemtextonly,
it defaults to the new paragraph (understandable). The only way I have found to
retain the right information is keeping all in separate paragraphs, but I am
looking to have a title with a leader line to its revision date in one
paragraph.

Leads me to multiple questions:

I am happy to share a sample chapter (with its EDD) and what I currently have
set up if someone has an idea. This is my first big project actually creating
the EDD from scratch, so it is entirely possible I missed something completely.

Thanks in advance!

Master Pages in Multiple Sizes?

2011-09-23 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hi, all!

Working in structured Frame 10. Trying to create multiple master pages for our
new manual series. I've figured out how to change page sizes and create new
master pages in general.

One issue: I need to have multiple page sizes within a book. The majority of
the book is 5.5" X 8.5", but we want to be able to have 11" X 8.5" pages
inserted as well. The production is already taken care of, so not worried about
that bit.

Is there a way to have all my master pages in various page sizes within one
file? Or do I have to create separate files with the different master pages?

Thanks!

Hi, guys!

I am befuddled by the inability to get rid of some old change bars in a
document. It was created before our current authors. We now work in a
combination of Frame 7 and 8, depending on the machine.

In three places there are change bars appearing in the margin that shouldn't be
there. I have checked the paragraph designer, the character designer, and
FormatStyleChange Bar. I have tried selecting all of the surrounding text,
applying a change bar, and then removing - only to still have my phantom one
remain. I have verified that it is not a piece of conditional text that is
hidden being the culprit.

Any ideas on how to find and get rid of whatever is holding them?

Thanks!

RE: Upgrading FM from 7.1 to 9

Hi, Lynn!

Short answers to some of your questions:
Yes, opening the docs in v9 is all you have to do and save as you
normally do.
However, you can only backsave to v8 from v9. We have run into this
problem several times, having to find someone one on v8 to then backsave
to v7.

Hope that helps!

Subject: Upgrading FM from 7.1 to 9

Hi,

My company is considering upgrading our FrameMaker from 7.1p114 to 9
(yippee, we've never upgraded before!).

We're all running Win XP.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but do we open our v7.1 FM files in
v9 and then save them as v9? Or is it more complicated than that?

Once our FM files are saved as v9, can any users still using v7.1 still
read them (there's a chance our counterpart US office won't get the
upgrade to v9)? Or would we need to save back as v7 for those rare
occasions? Are there any known issues with doing this?

We currently using WebWorks (WebWorks AutoMap 2003 Client within FM
menu) to produce CHM files. Will this be affected if we upgrade to v9?

When you buy a v9 licence, do you automatically get all the patches that
are released?

Upgrading FM from 7.1 to 9

2009-11-25 Thread Kristy Nolan

We currently using WebWorks (WebWorks > AutoMap 2003 Client within FM
menu) to produce CHM files. Will this be affected if we upgrade to v9?

When you buy a v9 licence, do you automatically get all the patches that
are released?

Any other tips for upgrading?

Can anyone confirm that v7.1 is no longer supported by Adobe?

Thanks very much in advance for your help, Lynn

RE: Delete Empty Pages

Hi, Kelly!

Have you checked under Format/Page Layout/Pagination? There is a setting
there that dictates whether you always have to have the last empty. Been
there done tat, and recently.

I cannot get Delete Empty Pages to stick. In other words, I'd like to
set it and whenever FM encounters an empty page, don't print it, don't
include it in file saves. I've tried each possible iteration. I've
followed http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/314/314928.html. No Joy.

Is this expected behavior? (I mean by design, not by FrameMaker just
does that. :-) Is there a Framescript fix?
I'm a well-experienced user, feeling stupid...Kelly.

Hypertext/Linking Problems and WebWorks

2009-05-13 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, all!

I have a manual that we are trying to clean up past formatting issues.
According to what I have read (I don't know much about this function), I
can link to other documents using the Hypertext dialog box, choosing the
Go to URL Command and entering the actual address. This works fine in
Frame when I save as View Only and when I save as PDF. These look nicer
in my draft document too, with just the link in blue.

However, this manual actually gets published by running it through
WebWorks Publisher Pro (yes, older). All of the links I have set up the
above way don't work. All of the older format links do. Those older
links look something like this:
a href=https://www.life.com/guidelines.pdf; target=_blankGuidelines
for Leaders/a
This confuses many of the people who are reviewing these as PDFs,
wanting to know why this garbage is in there, and what is really what
they'll see.

So, how do I get it to look nice on the draft side, and still work and
look right on the publish side?

Thanks for any and all advice!

RE: FM 8 - Change Bars

2009-04-30 Thread Kristy Nolan
I've managed to do this a little differently than the others have
mentioned. We start the content that needs the change bar prior to the
graphic, include the graphic, and then at least the first character of
the para immediately follows. Yes, it then looks like there is a change
in the first line of the next para, but seems to work well enough for
our people. Not necessarily the best way, but it works.

How do I get change bars to appear alongside graphics/anchored frames?
The help file indicates they should appear automatically (when
set) against non-referenced graphics but I can't get this to happen.
All my graphics are in anchored frames.

Any suggestions as to what is going on for them, and how they might
resolve this? I have offered a work around but there is probably a more
definitive answer or solution.

RE: re-use 101

2009-03-11 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, Joel!

Are you using structured or unstructured Frame? Have you considered
using text insets? I found this useful when I had a similar scenario a
few years ago on unstructured Frame. If you are on structured, check out
InsetPlus at West Street Consulting. We have found this to be very
useful for our docs.

I am using Frame 8. I have a set of seven manuals that are close to 100
pages each. Many sections of these manuals are identical, some sections
differ in detail in minor ways, and fewer sections differ in more
substantial ways. Currently they are all Frame books with each chapter
being its own file within the book. There is no re-use of anything at
the moment.

This is becoming increasingly burdensome to maintain, as a change to
something that appears in all seven manuals requires me to make that
change manually in all seven files. I would like to get to re-use, or
single-sourcing, but I'm puzzled as to how to get there. Would the best
strategy be:

(a) To use conditional text and generate several versions;

(b) To try and convert everything to XML and sew things together based
on individual XML files;

(c) Something else?
I have zero XML knowledge, and whenever I read about it, my head hurts.
I am willing to learn, but the benefit needs to be commensurate with the
pain involved in learning. I'm looking for the simplest solution that
allows for some common source material using my existing Frame
configuration. Ideas are appreciated.

RE: List of Effective Sections

2009-03-10 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, Bodvar!

Right now it appears that the LEP was all hard-coded, but I am not tied
to it, since I am breaking it into sections smaller than a page. My
first guess was that it would work well with markers, but I can't figure
out how this is accomplished. I have tried the methods that Clint and
Richard suggested. I like how it is working using run-in paras, but not
sure how it will work when I WebWorks it. It is an unstructured
document.

I'd like to see a sample to see if I can mimic it (to an extent). And
very happy for the help!
Thanks!

Hi Kristy,

I would need some more information about how the LEP is built. Is it
built on markers or does it read some hard text or variables from the
pages?

I have several versions, both structured and unstructured, which I could
send you a sample of, if you like (confidential, of course).
Mainly, I go for markers in unstructured and attributes in structured.
Then I rather skip the LEP(LES) and have the TOC read the revision
status of the headings and in order to count for all pages, just add a
dash and the last page number of the main section involved. This method
has been agreed to by the Authorities.

Further, this method helps if you have to convert the document to any
pageless format, like HTML.

Best regards.

 Hi, all!

I just know there has to be a way to do this, but am hitting a wall in

my thinking. We are working on an inherited manual that currently has
an LEP, which I think I understand how it is put together. However,
most pages have multiple sections on them. For example, on page 1,
there are sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4, each with its own title and

 revision date.

The question is how do I transform this LEP into an LES (list of
effective sections)? I'd like it to look similar to an LEP, but am
having trouble getting it to pull the revision date. Meaning, each
entry would be something like 1.1 Purpose .. 03/09/09

The section titles are currently autonumbered, the revision date is
hard-coded (because it changes by section not file). I am guessing I
need a custom marker, but beyond creating the marker, I do not know
how to work with them. I am on Frame 8, but most of my group is on
7.x.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Fonts Not Available That Aren't Used

2008-10-24 Thread Kristy Nolan
OK - I give. I am trying to clean up some files that give multiple
messages of a certain font not being available so another is
substituted. Managed to get rid of some just by cleaning up pieces that
were brought in from other sources, but can't find others. So I went
back to the template. I still have seven of these types of errors. I
have triple-checked the paragraph formats. I have checked for any
overrides within the text boxes that are set up (but no text within said
boxes). I found a few that were in the character palette, but not all.

So my question is, how can I find out where these particular fonts are
referenced when there isn't any text for it to be used on?

Thanks!

What about a text inset, where the source document has the light grey

Subject: Smart way to achieve goal in FM

OK Folks,

Here's a basic question for the gurus/experts. I've been using FM for a
number of years now, but recently I'm trying to do something that I
haven't done before so I'm not sure of the best way to achieve my
objective.

Context:
The document I am authoring from scratch is an entry-level type document
that deals mostly with system concepts and strategies. It will link to
already extant procedures in the online help, installation guides,
etc...

The document will be delivered as both a stand-alone PDF, and as part of
a merged help set produced with WWP2003.

Goal:
One of the things my manager wants is a threaded/running
Example/Scenario section that will appear in various portions of the
book that will explain the concepts in terms of an actual example.

Basically, this means introducing the Example scenario in the beginning
of the guide and corresponding sections of text in various and
subsequent chapters.

I want this content to appear with a light gray background. How do I do
this?

Here's what I've thought of:

Inserting a one-cell table with a gray background wherever this type of
content appears. Problem (which may have its own solution): The one
cell table is essentially 1 row, and it doesn't appear that you can
break a row across a page.

Adding a text frame for this content (from the graphics toolbar). Seems
do-able, as I can control the dimensions and background color of the
text frame. Only problem is WWP tends to put text frames at the end of
the chapter and not at the location in which they appear in the FM
document.

Anyone have a good solution for this? Like I said, we've never wanted
to do this type of thing before, so I am likely missing something
obvious. I'm not averse to using the help or other references...but my
searches thus far have been hindered by not knowing a good keyword to
start with. Alternatively, am I missing something obvious? Is there a
paragraph style for background color that I've managed to miss
repeatedly?

RE: How to get tables to span pages

2008-09-05 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, Carl!

First, check your Table Designer (CTRL + T). On the Basic tab, check
that the Start is set for anywhere.
Then, click in the row you want to be the top of your next page (if
there is a specific row you want to break the table at) and go to
Table/Row Format. In the Start Row drop-down, choose Top of Page.
That should fix it. If you have a header row, and it is marked as such,
it will repeat at the top of the page.

Hope that helps!

Hi Guys,

Not sure if it is acceptable to continue a thread like this, but in fact I
would be interested to learn the full list of plugins you guys use, at least
the ones that are most important and useful to you.

I currently work without plugins in *unstructured framemaker*, and must create
my chapter table of contents manually, indexing is not even performed at the
moment . . . I am missing special find/replace functions that I know exist . .
. and so, it would be great to see what collection of plugins you use and

I intend to take a list of these to my company and see if we can´t get some of
them to make my life easier.

Cheers,

Hi,

I know this question has been asked many times, but I can't find any
threads with the answers.

Here is the situation:

We have a TOC and LOT that uses leader dots that lead to a page number
on a right tab;

eg

Table 3-1 List of Program
Parameters...3-3

The problem is when the para text is longer than 1 line and the page
number wraps to second line. When that happens, we don't get a tab to
right or a leader.

eg.

Table 3.1 List of Programs Parameter for the XXX Program Setting
as;dfasdfdsf
3-3

Is there a way to get leaders on the second line? Seems like I
remember that you can't.

Thanks

Conditional Text and Pagination Issues

2008-07-14 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, all!

Here is this week's question. At least, I hope it is the only one this
week.

Working in structured docs, but I don't think that is the issue (but
wouldn't guarantee it). We have conditional text for a student guide and
an instructor guide. The part that is conditional is an instructor note
that lives in the sidehead.

First, I notice that the doc isn't following it's own rules about
widows/orphans. Set for three lines, but it is only keeping two words
with the graphic on the next page. I need that whole paragraph to go
with the graphic.

Second, if I flip back and forth between the conditions, it seems to
erase the rules I have applied and do its own thing. I have tried
Special/Page break/Top of Page. I have tried the pagination tab in the
Paragraph Designer with all combinations of Keep With. I can get it to
look right in student and to instructor, but lose everything if I go
back to student.

Any ideas what I am missing?

Thanks!

Overrides a necessary evil?

2008-07-09 Thread Kristy Nolan
Hi, all!

I realize this dilemma is opinion-based, but here goes:
In structured FrameMaker, in theory there shouldn't be any overrides,
right? They should have all been accounted for when devising the
structure. So everyone (at least in theory) should be writing/formatting
the same way.

What about page breaks? I understand the widow/orphan capabilities, but
sometimes it still looks awkward - it would look better (and reads
better) to move a whole section to the next page.

Any opinions either way? Or any good reasons why one is better than the
other?

Thanks for the input!

stage where we are starting to create material and test the structure.

One dilemma I came across was that of character formats. How or where do
character formats get set up (EDD or formats document)? I know how to
set up character formats in non-structured Frame, so that's not the
problem. I want to have this set up so that when we either reimport the
EDD or the formats, we don't lose the formatting. One example of this is
that our departmental style says that names of keys are in small caps,
which was a character format in unstructured Frame.

Enough rambling by me. Anyone have any advice? I've looked through my
resources to no avail.

Thanks!

Instructor Guides and page numbers

2007-05-10 Thread Kristy Nolan

Hi, all!

We are working on setting up our structures for training material, in
which two of the deliverables are a student guide and the associated
instructor guide. Although we are working in structured Frame, I don't
think my questions are necessarily influenced by that.

The way we want to set these up is that the student guide is a subset of
the instructor guide. The best way to describe it is like the textbooks
you used to have in grade school where the teacher's edition had extra
material around the margins, including answers to questions, supplies
needed, etc. Often this meant they had extra pages (e.g., p. 65a, 65b)
but the actual learning content page numbers matched up to the student
editions. We have the structure for the actual material well on its way.

So here is the question: Is there a way (hopefully relatively easy) to
have this sort of numbering set up? My first guess would be on the
numbering properties, but I don't know how to make this different for
two different editions.

Thanks!

The plan is to have one book in two versions with conditional text.
Unless we come up with a much better idea. We are just about to start
writing it.

Is the Instructor's Guide a totally separate book, or you have one book
that you're publishing in two versions, maybe controlled by conditional
text?

FW: Graphics and Reference Pages

Subject: Graphics and Reference Pages

Hello, All!

This has been my first real venture into reference pages and I have
managed to befuddle myself. I am trying to connect a small graphic
to a particular paragraph tag. I managed to get the tagging part
correct. However, I want the graphic to appear directly left of the
paragraph, not above/below. Does anyone have an idea of how to do
this? And, if so, am I correct in my assumption that there are no
strange caveats to using structured Frame and these?

Please reply directly, as I am on digest and won't see any answers
until tomorrow morning.

Thanks!

Structured Frame Questions

2007-02-07 Thread Kristy Nolan
My work group is attempting to make the change from unstructured to
structured Frame, and are attempting to define our structures and
corresponding elements. We are on Frame 7.0, and have learned just
enough structure to be dangerous. This move is to try to get us into
a single-sourcing environment. Eventually. We are using a new project
for our documents, and aren't considering any legacy material for the
time being.

I am looking for some pieces of information:

First, text inserts: The understanding is that these will follow the
same EDD as the document(s) they are imported into. By using the
associated formats document, different paragraph formats will then be
applied. Is this correct? Are there any quirks/differences using text
inserts in structured vs. unstructured?

Next, conditional text: We have found a plug-in that applies
conditions to the elements, but it appears that this will still make
our process very manual in the case of text inserts. Right now, the
thought is with nested pieces, where some elements need to be hidden
for specific information products. Is this the best (or very good)
way to do this? Are there better alternatives?

Thanks!
