Know bugs in FM 8?

2007-09-17 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

I also heard of these bugs in FrameMaker 8:
 - ESC+TAB does not insert TAB when cursor in table cell,
but the pound sign (#) is inserted
 - Opening an old file (FM version 8) with missing pictures does
not allow to set Ignore all missing files or Skip this file.
Only CANCEL is possible or searching for the file to provide new
   path.
 - Overlay graphics on top of imported graphics do not disappear
after deletion. Even screen refresh does not clear the image.
A re-import of the graphic is necessary

These bugs weren't mentioned on this list (or I didn't notice it).
Can anyone confirm this list? Specifically the second one (missing
graphics) would cause problems for us.

Best regards

Winfried

 Hi,

On the FrameUser.com web-site there is supposed to be
a white pager which explains how to switch bleeding
thumb tabs automatically. There should also be a
FrameScript script. However, I cannot access neither
of them. The web-site opens completely different pages.

Does anyone have this white paper and the script and

 Thank you very much

RE: Conditional Text Question

2007-07-10 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi Sam,

When you apply a condition to a table row, the cells in this
row get a thick coloured border. That's intended behaviour.
When you hide the condition indicators, this border disappears.
Is this what you want to achieve?

Apart from that you can also delete a condition and also the
text and table rows, the condition was applied to.

 Subject: Conditional Text Question

 Hello All,

I have a document that uses conditional text to delineate
 between two
different versions of the same basic product. Before I started this,
there were two separate books for each manual, even though there is a
LOT of cross-over text between them that is the same. I combined them
into a single set of master files and am marking the conditional text,
hiding what I don't want to see, and saving the resulting file for the
two separate books. Now, I have three files for each chapter of the
book: Master, Version 1, and Version 2. All well and good. However, I
also have ALL of the text in all three files, albeit Version
 1's text is
hidden in Version 2, and vice-versa. Is there a way to permanently
remove the text for Version 1 from Version 2, and vice-versa, while
maintaining the master file? One of the reasons I need to do
 this is to
remove the borders around cells in a table that are conditionalized.
Currently, there are large colored borders around any table cells that
 are marked as conditional.

I'm on Windows XP with Frame 7.2b144.

Thanks much in advance!

RE: Can't Change Paragraph Tag

Hi Steve,

I don't know when this flag gets set. In the MIF documentation
it mentions text insets. Eventually there was a text inset
before/after this paragraph which was deleted and the paragraph
retained its flag.

I had the same problem some time ago and noticed this flag in
the MIF file. Deleting it fixed the problem.

As a matter of interest, how does this flag get set? Is there
a control in FrameMaker to lock a paragraph like this, or can

Import/export from/to InDesign and QuarkXPress

2007-05-04 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

I have a product catalogue maintained in FrameMaker.
Now I am asked to integrate data from 2 other offices.
They use InDesign and QuarkXPress. What are the best
export formats for InDesign and QuarkXPress to import
into FrameMaker?

Additionally the QuarkXPress users also have a few
other catalogues. Eventually sometime they want to
import my data for a catalogue which spans several
product ranges. At least from my current knowledge
all pages are layed out separately. Therefore I do
not expect this to happen. Anyway, is there a format
which FrameMaker could export and which QuarkXPress
could import? What about tagged text?

I also have FrameScript which I use to collect data
according to catalogue variants, assign to product
ranges, create index markers, cross-references etc.

Best regards

Winfried

RE: Table title alignment oddity

2007-04-19 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

The table title frame spans only the text column (without
sidehead area) if the table columns have only the width of
the text column. If the table columns are wider than the
text column, the table title frame spans the text column
plus the sidehead area.

Eventually your table columns are too wide.

Well, maybe I've found a bug. I assure you the para tag the tables are
anchored to is set to In Column, but the frame for the table
 title goes to
the left side of the side head area when I insert a new table.

Some existing tables of this same style, anchored to the same
 para tag, have
the title frame aligned with the text, that is, not in the
 side head area.
Other existing tables similarly anchored have the title frame
 all the way to
 the side head area.

So, when I set the table title style to indent, it works fine
 in tables I
insert and in some existing tables, but other existing tables end up
indenting the table title too much, because the title frame
 is only in the
 main text area.

Reapplying the table style or para styles or anything else
 does not help get
all these tables of the same style to look the same.

To add to the fun, two different table styles, one set to 0
 Left and the
other set to .25 Left, align identically. The title goes all
 the way through
the side head area, but the table starts in the main text
 area (not in the
side head). Both are anchored to the same para tag type. Are
 we having fun
 yet???

 It's making me a little nuts. =:o

Are you sure? Really? Double-check this in Paragraph Designer's
Pagination tab. Are the anchor pgfs all set to In Column? It's not
enough that they _be_ in the column (via an indent setting, for
instance) -- are they _defined_ as In Column?

I hope this is making sense. The crux of the problem is
inconsistent behavior of where tables and table titles align
in relation to side head area. What controls this?

The anchor pgf is supposed to control this. I've just
 confirmed this in
my current doc. We anchor tables in TableAnchor pgfs, which are set on
the Pagination tab to Across All Columns and Side Heads.

A left-aligned table anchored in a TableAnchor pgf starts at the text
frame edge (in the sidehead area) plus its Left Indent. The
 Title frame
above it starts at the text frame edge (in the sidehead
 area), too, and
the TableTitle pgf in it is indented by its Left Indent amount.

If I change the table's anchor pgf from TableAnchor to
 FigAnchor (which
is set to In Column), both the table and its Title frame jump
 rightward
 into the text column.

If you have two tables anchored in identical In Column anchor
 pgfs, and
one aligns left across the sidehead area and the other
 doesn't, I think
 you've found a real bug.

 Later, Linda also wrote:

The table title is set to In Column. Forgot to mention that.

That setting actually is irrelevant. The title pgf is in its own text
frame (if you work with View Borders on -- and you should, IMHO --
you'll see it). That frame has a single column with no sidehead. You
 can't change it, either.

You can control the placement of the title pgf within the Title frame
 using its indent settings.

Best regards

Winfried

Error message: Resulting columns would be too short

2007-04-13 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

I want to change the height of a text frame in an anchored
frame. When I try to change it from 0.661 cm to 0.265 cm
with the Object properties window, I get an error message:
Resulting columns would be too short.

The error message starts with a value of 0.317 cm. The font
size of the paragraph in this text frame has 8 pt. To display
all characters a minimum height of 0.24 cm seems to be
sufficient.

When I change the height of the text frame with the mouse,
everything is fine. When I then want to change the height
with the Object properties window from e.g. 0.256 cm to
0.265 cm, I get again this error message although the value
seems to be valid. Otherwise I couldn't have set the height
with the mouse.

Does anyone know where this error message comes from?

Best regards

Maddening problem with frame below

2007-04-11 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi Steve,

I have a similar problem. I have an infoicon paragraph
in the sidehead area with a Frame below which holds the info
icon. The paragraph font size is 2 pt, the space above is
22 pt. Now and then the font size and the space above change
to "normal" values (font size 10 pt and space above 110 pt).
As a consequence the info icon moves down by 6 cm. I didn't
pay much attention to this problem yet. I have the feeling
that this happens when I hide/show conditions.

Eventually your problem is also caused by a very small font
size which changes now and then. What exactly changes when
your rule moves down? Maybe you should convert to MIF and
compare all properties of this paragraph with the correct
properties.

Best regards

Winfried

RE: Strange PDF Problem

2007-03-21 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi Shlomo,

On your web-site you assume that those internal links which point
to an explicit file name (even when it's in the same file) are
only created via Safe as PDF. Is this true? Can I safely use
the manual process FM - PS - PDF instead?

By the way, is there a link checking mechanism integrated in
Acrobat 8?

I'll patiently repeat my recommendation not to use Save as

I fully agree with Diane Gaskill's recommendation: set the
 FrameMaker book
name so that it has the name you need for
your PDF, and don't change the name when print to a .ps file
 (or when/if
 you use Save as PDF).

Don't rename the PDF either, unless it's not part of a
 document set and
only after you verified that its internal links do not
 point to the old name.

Upon further examination, I was able to reproduce the
 creation of PDF
links which use a filename even though the link is internal

Given this FrameMaker bug, we may have yet another reason to

RE: Creating special bullets

2007-03-12 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

Yes, you can enter the hex code directly in dialog boxes.
However, the hex code of the Windows character map often
does not match the character which is then shown in
FrameMaker. If the character is not listed in the FrameMaker
Character Sets PDF file, I usually test all characters on
my keyboard until I find the correct one.

You can directly specify the hex code shown in Windows

 In FrameMaker,

FrameMaker crashes when file is opened prior to book

2007-03-07 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

I have a book with 8 files (TOC, but no index), 230 pages.
When I open the book first, update it and then print,
everything is fine. However, when I now close everything,
open one of the files first, then open the book file and
print the book file, FrameMaker crashes. No recovery files,
lck files closed. This happens with 2 of my books.

Is this a known bug? I thought that this happens only with
the TOC.

Hi,

Wow, that was fast. Klaus Müller's comment helped.
I switched off all APIs in the maker.ini file
([Preferences] API=Off). Then the update took only
5 to 10 seconds. After I switched all APIs on again
and restarted FrameMaker, the book update took still
only 5 to 10 seconds. Problem solved.

I do not know which of the few APIs I have installed,
caused this. Anyway, now I know what to do when that

 Hi,

I inherited a book with 35 files and 160 pages. When I update
the book (or rename a file or update the file info etc.), this
takes 1 to 2 minutes. That's _much_ longer than similar books.
Printing, however, is normal. There aren't excessive numbers
of cross-references in there. Only lots of tables. Everything
 is on my local drive.

I already checked the MIF file. Nothing uncommon.

Does anyone know why the book update takes such long? It seems
as if each file in the book would be opened _very_ often.

Probably the fastest would be to just recreate the book ...

RE: Translation choices?

2007-02-23 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

France and Poland have a language protection law. It
demands that everything must be published in French or
Poland respectively. This may encompass even internal
publications.

Other countries in the EU demand publications in local
languages if otherwise you cannot install or use the product
or cannot use the product safely (warnings). Depends all on
your users.

The CE sign does not demand translations but conformity to
specifications and to standards. When these standards demand
a translation, then of course the documentation must be
translated.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CE_mark

The machinery guideline (applies only to machines) specifically
demands translation of a lot of information!

This all applies for EU countries. I do not know much about other
countries e.g. in Africa or Asia. However meanwhile most of these
have similar standards, guidelines and rules.

Best regards

I think there's a requirement in France to have critical text
 appear in
French. I know my company had to make sure that all the warning text,
for possible injurious situations encounred in its service

to have a French translation in an otherwise all English book, even

 Subject: Translation choices?

For you guys that are having documents translated, or people
investigating it, and any listers from outside the US...

Are there any commonly used or accepted EU guidelines for picking what
languages to translate to from US English?

Our marketing department is pushing to translate into
 multiple languages
so lighting equipment installers around the world who may not
 be English
speakers, well-educated or multi-lingual, can avoid electrocuting
themselves. So although multiple language translation may be on the
horizon, they're thinking to start with Spanish, German, and Chinese.
These seem like decent choices, but I think they're based on sales
figures into those areas rather than any research into regulations and
 such.

Thanks for any guidance y'all can offer!

 Cheers,
 Art

Translation choices?

2007-02-23 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

France and Poland have a "language protection law". It
demands that everything must be published in French or
Poland respectively. This may encompass even internal
publications.

Other countries in the EU demand publications in local
languages if otherwise you cannot install or use the product
or cannot use the product safely (warnings). Depends all on
your users.

The CE sign does not demand translations but conformity to
specifications and to standards. When these standards demand
a translation, then of course the documentation must be
translated.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CE_mark

The machinery guideline (applies only to "machines") specifically
demands translation of a lot of information!

This all applies for EU countries. I do not know much about other
countries e.g. in Africa or Asia. However meanwhile most of these
have similar standards, guidelines and rules.

Best regards

Size of the book window

2007-02-21 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

FrameMaker 7.1p116

When I change the size of the book window this change
is only saved when I also change anything substantial
with the book, e.g. switch between the display of file
names and heading text. However, when I open the book
the next time, the book window has shrinked in both
dimensions. This happens again and again. Always when
I save the book window (after any real change such as
switching between file name/heading text), the width
and height is reduced.

Can anyone confirm this? Is this fixed in FM 7.2?

Best regards

Winfried

RE: Figure Numbering Problem

2007-02-15 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

You said that your numbered paragraphs are in text boxes.
Do you mean text frames? These won't be in the same text flow
as your regular text. Therefore that might account for any
pecularities.

Best regards

Winfried

I am having a problem numbering figures in service manuals
developed by my client. The manuals are range from 3- to 40
pages. My job is to revise the client's existing manuals to
account for annual updates and design changes for each of my
client's products. We are both using FrameMaker 7.0 on a PC
platform and a Windows XP operating system..

Figures are automatically numbered using a Figure tag for
which the automatic numbering format X:Figure n+ (developed
by the client). Most are smaller in-column figures with a
ruling line around the figure frame. In previous versions of
the manuals, the client had placed the figure numbers outside
the frame, but now they have asked me to move them inside the
frame, so I set up a text box inside the graphics frame and
tag the text as Figure. What happens is that many times,
figure numbers will repeat themselves. For example, I may
have three or four consecutive figures numbered as Figure 4,
followed by Figure 5 and two figures numbered as Figure 6.
All text is part of the same flow. The only way I have found
to correct it is to override the automatic numbering with a
specific figure number, which of course defeats the purpose
 of auto numbering.

The manual I am currently working on has 30 figures. I
created the last 6 or 7 and inserted the text box for the
figure. When I tagged the text the numbers for each figure
was identical. I also noticed in making cross-references that
the figure numbers in the tag list were not in sequence.
Example Figure 9 appeared before Figure 8.

The only items automatically numbered in the manuals are page
numbers in a footer on the underlying page and the figure
numbers. Is it necessary to set up the automatic numbering
 format as X:Figure n+ =0?

RE: Double index file names

2006-10-23 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

Does your client create a regular file first with all the
formatting for the index and names it something like
filenameIX.fm? And then he tries to add a FM generated index
file?

Then he just has to skip the first step. He should create
an index file only via the Add | Standard Index command and
update the book. Then the index file is automatically created
and he can continue to format and configure the index file.

Different endings when typing continuous letters

2006-10-23 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi Janet,

In the maker.ini file there is a setting DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics.
Change that to "On".

Otherwise the display is optimized for screen display. But then
sometimes it might differ from what you print.

This setting affects only the line length. It does not change any
line breaks or paragraph breaks. The number of characters in a line
should not change.

 Framemaker 7.2 on Windows XP.

I am trying to something very basic and simple - create a TOC for a
book. Right now, I have but a single file in the book. I use
 Add Table

TOC, then generate the book. When I open the TOC and go to view the
reference page to format the TOC entries, the TOC reference page shows
absolutely no entries for any of the paragraph tags that I have
selected. Instead, it shows entries for tags that do not
 exist anywhere
in the single file for which I am generating the TOC and this file was
not created from an existing template/file. This single file
 was created
 totally from scratch.

That is, I have chosen Heading1, Heading2, and Heading3 to generate my
TOC. When I open the TOC Reference page, I don't see any of the
 following entries: Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC, and Heading3TOC.
 Instead, I
see a bunch of weird entries with buried end of flow symbols and tab
symbols and only the first two are selectable and editable. I cannot
select anything else on the Reference page.

I am absolutely stymied by this. In all of my years of using
 Framemaker,
I have never seen anything like this in my life. Any and all help is

As a work-around you have to assign the condition also to

 Dear all,

this is not a pure FM problem but here it is: are conditional
 tags handled
by Trados's extension S-Tagger for FrameMaker?

I'm currently writing procedures to repair hydraullic motors.
 The client has
large powerful motors and smaller ones. Repair procedures are somehow
different depending on the size of the motor, but not totally
 different. My
idea was to use conditional tags (1. big motor size ; 2.
 little motor
 size).

We have to translate these documents into several languages
 later, but i've
been said not to use conditional tags, because Trados do not
 handle them.

You must have experienced this in the past... Any help appreciated!

RE: Translate FrameMaker book to Hebrew/Arabic and convert to onlinehelp

2006-08-23 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

Thank you all very much for your suggestions.
Solutions were:

o 2 separate translations:
  - Convert to HTML, get it translated and convert to
HTML Help.
  - Convert to Word, get it translated and create a PDF.
Thus the online help will still be context sensitive.
The second translation will cost money but in the era of
translation memory systems hopefully not to much.

o Convert to XML, get that translated. Then:
  - Convert the XML to HTML via XSLT.
  - Convert the XML to PDF via LaTeX.

o Convert everything to InDesign. However then I don't
  have an online help.

o Mess around with the registry to get FrameMaker to
handle right to left languages. Seemed to be only a
  solution for 2 page documents.

No-one suggested a converter from Word to HTML Help.

Best regards

 Hi,

probably in the next year we have to translate a
FrameMaker book into Hebrew and Arabic and also
convert the translation into an HTML Help. As FM
cannot handle right-to-left languages I plan this:

1 Convert the FM book to Word with Mif2Go.

2 Get the Word file(s) translated.

3 Convert the translated Word file(s) to HTML Help.

Does anybody know a suitable converter? What about
WebWorks ePublisher Pro für Word? Does anyone use
it already? Can it handle Hebrew or Arabic?

What do you do when you have to translate into
Hebrew or Arabic and convert into an online help?

Thank you very much for your help

Translate FrameMaker book to Hebrew/Arabic and convert to onlinehelp

Winfried

Translate FrameMaker book to Hebrew/Arabic and convert to online help

2006-08-18 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

probably in the next year we have to translate a
FrameMaker book into Hebrew and Arabic and also
convert the translation into an HTML Help. As FM
cannot handle right-to-left languages I plan this:

1 Convert the FM book to Word with Mif2Go.

2 Get the Word file(s) translated.

3 Convert the translated Word file(s) to HTML Help.

Does anybody know a suitable converter? What about
WebWorks ePublisher Pro für Word? Does anyone use
it already? Can it handle Hebrew or Arabic?

What do you do when you have to translate into
Hebrew or Arabic and convert into an online help?

Thank you very much for your help

RE: FM won't create a second page

2006-08-04 Thread Reng, Winfried Dr.
Hi,

I guess your problem is that you wrote in a table cell.
FrameMaker will - unlike Word - not split table cells
if the cell height got too large for the text frame.
Therefore you have to limit the amount of text in your
table cell and continue in the next table row.

Best regards

Winfried

Subject: FM won't create a second page

 Dear all,

the second time it happens to me.

First : I was writing text on my first page and when I
 reached the bottom of
it, FM did not create a second page to write on but allowed
 me to write on
 and on underneath the footer.

Second : I inserted an anchored frame in the lowest cell of a
 table (bottom
of the page) and the same thing happened - the anchored frame
 inserted well,
but half of it (the lowest part) was invisible, below the
 footer once again.

Any idea on how to fix that?

First time I added an unlinked page (I don't really know
 how it's called
in the English version, it is Ajouter des pages non
 connectées in French)
but it does not satisfy me.

Thanx in advance for your help.

 Mathieu.

RE: PDF Page Size Issues

Hi,

I have the same problem every half year. When I restart
my PC everything is OK again (at least until now).

Best regards

 Subject: PDF Page Size Issues

Okay, this is a new one (at least for me...)

I had a deadline to submit a draft last Wednesday, which was
 my last day
before vacation. Wednesday afternoon, I finished the draft, created a
PDF, and sent it off for review. Today is my first day back in the
office, and I have revisions to make that HAVE to be done TODAY. I've
made all the changes in the FM (7.2 for Windows) files and created the
PDF to send off for final approval.

Except that I can't send it off for approval because the page size is
0.5 x 0.67 inches!! (The page size should be 8.5 X 11.) This did not
change in the source files, and I didn't make any changes to my
distiller settings or to my printer driver instance. I even
 tested other
Distiller settings, and they all do the same thing. The Print
 dialog box
in FrameMaker says Scale to 100%, same as always.

Where else should I be looking to see what's wrong? I'm claiming I
didn't make any changes to the printer/distiller settings, but I *was*
showing a co-worker a few things in there, so something may have been
inadvertently changed. BUT I can't see what's different from before...

 Anyone?

 Thanks!
