Jody,

I sent you an email off-list on this, but am sending this to the list, just
to close the loop. I had the same issue recently and was helped tremendously by
Richard Combs and Sean Brierly. I forwarded to you the emails they sent me to
clear up this problem. They should do the same for you. If you have any further

And, once again, much thanks to Richard and Sean for helping me with that

Hello Frame Experts,

I'm hoping someone can kindly help with me with an error message that is
causing PDF file generation failure when using FrameMaker 7.x for Windows and
Acrobat Distiller 7.0.

The error occurred after the addition of some .png graphics in the FrameMaker
source file.

Any help is greatly appreciated! :-)

Thank you,
Jody

RE: question about usage

2008-07-23 Thread Sam Beard
Deidre,

Yes, they ARE numbers. However, in an attempt to avoid confusion, the
characters themselves are referred to as numeric characters because 123
is itself a number MADE UP of those characters 1, 2, and 3. So, to try
and prevent people from confusing the NUMBER of 123 with the CHARACTERS
of 1, 2, and 3, the term numeric characters comes into play. Does that
help any?

Thanks all for the responses about alphanumeric characters and the use
of that terminology.

I get that 123ABC consist of alphanumerical characters.

However, does 123 consist of numerical characters? I would say it
consists of numbers.

Does ABC consist of alpha characters? I would say it consists of
letters.

In the documents I am working with, 123 is refered to as numerical
characters and ABC is refered to as alpha characters.

Here's what I'm talking about:

Move the part numbers that begin with a numerical character to the
end of the list after the part numbers that begin with an alpha
character.

I'm just wondering how widespread this usage is. Are these terms just
in my documents in my company, and I should make the correction, or do
technical writers the world over use alpha characters to refer to
letters and numerical characters to refer to numbers?

Thanks!

Table Autonumbering

2008-07-14 Thread Sam Beard
All,

I'm on Frame 7.2p158 on Windows XP.

I'm working on an inherited document, so I'm not sure about the
details of how things were created. There are some tables in this
chapter, with cross-references in the description text for the table.
There are two of these tables that have the numbers listed out of order
when I go to select a cross-reference target. And in one of these cases,
I added the Table Continuation variable, which is also showing up in the
list. I've never seen that before! So, what I have in my cross-reference
list is:

9.2. blah, blah, blah

9.4. blah, blah, blah

9.3. blah, blah, blah (Continued)

9.5. blah, blah, blah

9.12. blah, blah, blah

9.14. blah, blah, blah

9.15. blah, blah, blah

9.13. blah, blah, blah

9.16. blah, blah, blah

Anyone have any clues/ideas? I recreated the 9.13. table in it's
entirety (by inserting a new table and then copying/pasting the text
from the old one). Also, while the numbers were out of order, the
Continued part wasn't included initially. It only show up after I added
the variable to the title.

Also, while they're out of order in the cross-reference target list
in the dialog box, they are in the correct order in the document. So,
there doesn't SEEM to be a reason for this, or an ill effect on the
document. I'm just not sure of the cause and if there MIGHT be an ill
effect I'm unaware of.

Thanks much!

Odd Control Key Issues

2008-07-11 Thread Sam Beard
All,

I'm on Windows XP with Frame 7.2p158. Please forgive the
cross-posting.

A while back, I posted some messages concerning issues with the
Control-key shortcuts not working, along with the arrow keys for moving
the cursor not working when held down (instead of moving repeatedly
until the key is released, it only once, but only after the key is
released). Well, I've just noticed another weird aspect of this
behavior. I'm placing some Index markers and I can copy and paste in the
Marker dialog box using the Control-C and Control-V keys there and the
arrow keys work normally. They don't work in the *document*, but they do
in the *dialog box*!

Just thought I'd mention this as there were three or four others that
contacted me about this issue, saying they've experienced the same
thing. Thought they might want to know. It would sure be nice if Adobe
fixed this. However, considering FM 8 is out, I seriously doubt they'd
devote any resources to fixing this issue. Any know if FM 8 has done the
same thing? Personally, I think it has something to do with certain
graphics formats used in a document (or with *how* they're used), but
that's pure speculation.

RE: How FM use impacts purchasing decisions

2008-06-19 Thread Sam Beard
Rene,

If you're interested in a Mac running VMWare's Fusion, Parallel's
Desktop, or any other emulation/virtualization software, Macworld
Magazine did a comparison of these programs within the past three or
four months. You might still find it available on their Web site.

I also agree with Art on the 10-key peripheral. They're fairly cheap
and MUCH easier/cheaper to replace than a new keyboard or computer! If
it's something that would fit into your work method/style, it just might
help you out quite a bit.

Apple is making a push for more of the business market, and has been
for quite a few years since they introduced their own rack-mounted
server. Recently, with the increased sales/market share of Macs, Apple
is also pushing their computers more towards the business market, too.
With the help of virtualization software and Apple's own Boot Camp
software, there's little that a Mac can't do these days. PC Magazine has
for quite a few years now considered a Mac laptop one of the best, and
PC World and Consumer Reports usually agrees with them, for what that
might be worth.

Good luck with your decision and purchase, whatever it might be!

Hi All,

My PC laptop is beaten up so badly it's barely stable anymore, so it's
getting time to start the process of identifying the next workhorse for
me. (Yes, I am rough on a laptop and rely on it very heavily. Any
testimonials of your laptop successes are more than welcome!)

I have gotten rather irritated with Microsoft since Vista came out, and
I really am reluctant to get a new PC laptop due to it shipping with
Vista and all the exponentially increased hassle factor that will
entail. Frankly, I don't have time to spend 30 minutes per product just
to load the software and get it functional by jumping through all the
hoops required now. I get that it's piracy protection, and I get the
concept and am not trying to circumvent any copyright laws, but it
really just feels like my time and purse are being taxed because of
other people's lack of ethics.

I have some friends who have moved to the Mac platform for their
laptops, and they swear by them. All the IT gurus I know swear by
Unix/Linux and open source development. But, then I get the cold water
splashing in the face: the majority of my computer use is work related,
and the majority of that work is done in FrameMaker, and FM seems viable
only in PC world.

Am I missing something, or is this really the trap it seems to be? If
I'm going to continue working with clients whose environment,
architecture, workflow, and staffing all revolve around FrameMaker, am I
forced to concede to all the baggage that comes with the PC world? Or is
there a viable way to use FrameMaker on a new Apple
laptop/notebook/etc., or on a Linux laptop, seamlessly with FM files
saved by and shared with FM PC users? I can't risk hosing anything in
these single-sourced shared-file environments...!

Thanks in advance,

Peter,

Just to clarify, you CAN'T buy a Mac with Windows XP. At least, not
directly configured that way from Apple. A third-party store might be
selling one with some virtualization software to go along with XP.
Although, with Boot Camp, I suppose there COULD be a store selling one
with Windows pre-installed and NO virtualization software included.
Still, Apple doesn't promote this as something available at their stores
or via the Web, AFAIK.

I purchased a laptop with Vista last October. I am THIS CLOSE to
chucking it and getting a Mac.

It's probably worth switching just to avoid Vista. If you can get XP,
great, but if your choices are a) Vista or b) Mac, I'd definitely go
with b, speaking from personal experience.

FrameMaker for Mac stopped at 7.0, which leaves the issue of buying a
MacTel with Windows XP before the deadline at the end of June.

Thanks for clarifying this, Sam. I was thinking of non-Apple Mac
resellers who pre-install Windows for their customers, or sell a
virtual product and a Windows version with their MacTels. The Mad
resellers are barred from selling XP just as the PC resellers are.

How FM use impacts purchasing decisions

I "get" that it's piracy protection, and I "get" the
concept and am not trying to circumvent any copyright laws, but it
really just feels like my time and purse are being taxed because of
other people's lack of ethics.

How FM use impacts purchasing decisions

Text Frames on Graphic

2008-06-10 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

I'm using Frame 7.2p158 on Windows XP.

I'm having an issue with text frames on a graphic. I need to place
some text frames to use as part labels on a graphic. I've created some
text frames and entered in the text I need for some of the callouts.
I've then tried to move them into place on the graphic (which is inside
an anchored frame). I can place some of them and they show up and I can
also select them and relocate/resize them as needed. However, some of
the text frames don't allow this. Indeed, they end up showing the text
being below the bottom margin of the text frame. I can't Control-click
on the frame to select it and I can't resize it without moving the
underlying graphic. I've tried sending the graphic to back, bringing the
text frames to front, but it doesn't make any difference. I've also
tried looking in the manual and saw something about selecting a
different color view, but it's really unclear exactly what to do there.
I've tried a couple of things with the color views and they haven't made
a difference. Can someone please tell me what's happening here?
Sometimes, I can place a text frame on top of a graphic and have it
display just fine and others I get the same effect here: the text frame
indicating the text is outside of the frame's margins. Sometimes, if I
nudge the graphic one way or another, the text reappears in the text
frame. However, that's usually if the text frame is near the edge of the
graphic. In this case, I need the text frame over the middle of the
graphic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm pretty certain Linda is right. If the Runaround Properties setting
of a graphic frame (not an anchored frame; those have no runaround
setting) is Contour or Bounding Box, then it will repel text,
regardless of what text frame or flow that text is in. That sounds like
what you've described.

Did you try setting the graphic frame to Don't Run Around, or just
decide Linda must be wrong without testing it?

RE: [BULK] RE: Text Frames on Graphic

2008-06-10 Thread Sam Beard
Clint,

Thanks for that. Yes, I'm aware that text lines would also work, but
they wouldn't work quite as well in this case. For one thing, the
callouts are text instead of a simply a number/letter that's defined
elsewhere. Secondly, the callouts have more than a single line, which is
where the text tool seems to work best. Thirdly, I also need to apply a
paragraph style to the callouts, which is not available as a text line.
Conceivably, I could also reformat the text to match the format of the
other callouts, which is what I was going to try if I didn't get a fix
to the problem otherwise.

Thanks much for the response and suggestion!

It might not be relevant in your situation, but you don't really need a
text frame to add callouts on top of a graphic. Just use the text tool
on the graphics toolbar. You can change the font, size, and color as
necessary. You can also add arrows and simple shapes.

Also, you might be able to use something in the software that comes with

possible that Preview, software that allows for viewing PDF files and

Hi

Not Frame related, but I thought some of the Mac users might be able to
help. My wife is a teacher and uses a Mac at school. She has bought an

educational program that imports digital images, but only as bmp files.

Because she wants to import photos taken on a digital camera, she needs

freeware/shareware viewer/converter program that will allow her to do
this conversion on her Mac laptop. I know there are many programs like
this for a PC (XnView, IrfanView, etc), but I'm a bit lost in the Mac

support file conversion yet.

Thanks

Thanks in advance,

Text Frames on Graphic

Linda,

That seems to apply to graphics when you're placing them inside a
text frame on a page and you want that text to flow (or not, as the case
may be) around the anchored frame. In this case, I'm trying to get a
text frame (used for callouts) to display correctly on top of a graphic
placed inside an anchored frame on the page. Or am I missing something
in what you've said?

Text Frames on Graphic

2008-06-10 Thread Sam Beard
Linda,

Okay, I tried that when you first replied, but it didn't do anything
to fix it. So, after reading your second message, I tried again, this
time selecting just the graphic and not the anchored frame it was in,
and it seems to have solved the problem! So, thank you VERY much for the
solution, as this seems to have fixed the problem!

Thanks again, and thanks also to Deirdre Reagan, who responded off-list!

Text Frames on Graphic

2008-06-10 Thread Sam Beard
Richard,

I just responded to Linda's second post, saying that I misunderstood
her and tried to change the properties on the anchored frame, versus on
the graphic itself. After clicking on the graphic and selecting
Runaround Properties and changing it to Don't Run Around, the problem
seems resolved! So, much appreciation to Linda for solving this for me!

Thanks for the response, Richard!

I'm pretty certain Linda is right. If the Runaround Properties setting
of a graphic frame (not an anchored frame; those have no runaround
setting) is Contour or Bounding Box, then it will "repel" text,
regardless of what text frame or flow that text is in. That sounds like
what you've described.

Did you try setting the graphic frame to Don't Run Around, or just
decide Linda must be wrong without testing it?

Richard

[BULK] RE: Text Frames on Graphic

First thing we need to know is what version of Mac OS is she using.
Also, you might be able to use something in the software that comes with

Hi

Not Frame related, but I thought some of the Mac users might be able to
help. My wife is a teacher and uses a Mac at school. She has bought an

educational program that imports digital images, but only as bmp files.

Because she wants to import photos taken on a digital camera, she needs
to convert them from jpg to bmp. Can anyone recommend some
freeware/shareware viewer/converter program that will allow her to do
this conversion on her Mac laptop. I know there are many programs like
this for a PC (XnView, IrfanView, etc), but I'm a bit lost in the Mac

support file conversion yet.

Thanks

RE: Find and change smart quotes for regular quotes

2007-10-08 Thread Sam Beard
Stuart and Theresa,

You don't have to turn off the smart quotes to type a regular quote
symbol. All you have to do is type Esc+Shift+ and this will put in a
regular quote symbol. I'm not sure that it will work in the Search
dialog box, though. You could still copy and paste it in, though, I
believe.

Sorry, my bad; I was going by memory. It sounds like you're finding the

Well, instead of \g, first turn off Smart Quotes in the FM doc, and then

type a double-quote somewhere, copy it, and paste it into the replace

I think... I'm not in FM right now and don't have time to test.

RE: Keyboard shortcuts stop working

2007-09-10 Thread Sam Beard
Diane,

Thanks for responding on this issue. I've written in about the same
problem, along with a problem with the arrow keys not working when held
down continuously. The arrow keys work when pressed repeatedly, but not
if held down continuously. A couple of others have responded with
comments about certain programs installed or third-party extensions to
Frame installed, but none of those apply as I don't have the listed
applications installed, nor do I have any third-party Frame extensions
installed.
I'm looking in the Regional and Language Options control panel and
checking all of the things there I can deduce from your post, but none
of those seem to apply to my situation, either. I recently changed my
display settings that control the appearance of the windows (I don't
recall if I had it changed to my personal preferences when I've had this
issue before or not, so thought I'd try it. I have to switch to a
different one at times for screen captures.), so we'll see if this has
any effect on it.
Last week, I had an interesting development with it. I was working on
editing a document and it started happening again. Before I restarted
Frame, I wanted to finish the updates I was working on. I paged up and
found an anchored frame with an image in it, along with some lines and
text boxes for callouts. I remembered reading that you can press Control
and click on an element like a text box without switching tools, so I
did that and it worked! I moved the elements using the Alt key and arrow
keys and that worked, as well. When I clicked out of the anchored frame
and tried using the arrow keys, as well as things like Control-A,
Control-V, etc, they all worked, as well! I have NO IDEA why this
behavior happened, but, so far, it hasn't happened again.
I'd certainly like to resolve this issue, if possible, as it is
rather a PITA to have to restart Frame when it happens!

Hi Rick,

I have had the same thing happen, but also in other apps. The keyboard
gets remapped to another language, usually Spanish. I turned off the
language settings in the control panel and have not had it happen since.

The keyboard shortcut to switch languages was set to Left Alt Shift and
I apparently was hitting those keys without realizing it. Next time it
happens, try that key combination and see if it switches back. If not,
click Settings Control Panel Regional and Language Settings Details
and turn off all the languages except English.

Strange Key Control Issue

2007-08-31 Thread Sam Beard
Hey All,

I'm having a strange problem with keys working in Frame 7.2b144 on
Windows XP. Certain keys seem to either stop working or stop working as
expected. For example, my Control key for shortcuts doesn't work
anymore. Neither do my arrow keys when held down. If I continuously
press the arrow keys, they work for each press, but not if held down.
Restarting Framemaker fixes the problem. So, what causes it? Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated!

I have the same problem but it only happens after generating a List of
Markers (index markers specifically in my case). When I then try
selecting
all to paste it into another document for converting to a table the
ctrl+a,
ctrl+c and ctrl+v key combos no longer work and a reboot is necessary.

Would love to solve this!

Lester,

No, I don't have any third-party plug-ins running at all. There are

Do you have any 3rd party plug-ins running, like Microtype's TimeSavers,
etc? Have you tried running without those enabled to see if this could
be a by-product of those utilities? (note: I am NOT picking on the
TimeSavers as the culprit but it is simply the first plug-in I thought
of.)

Perhaps you should update to the latest 7.2 release - 7.2P158. That is
the version I have and I do not recall ever having this problem with the
control or arrow keys ceasing to function as I expect.

Strange Key Control Issue

2007-08-31 Thread Sam Beard
Lester,

No, I don't have any third-party plug-ins running at all. There are
some I think we should probably get, but that's not an option at the
moment. I'll check on updating to the latest 7.2 release, as well.

Thanks much for the response!

Running Structured Frame 7.2/8 on Macbook Pro under OS10/Parallels

2007-08-08 Thread Sam Beard
Will,

I don't think that's related to running on a Mac, Parallels or not.
I'm on Windows XP with 7.2 and I have that same problem at times.
Actually, there are times I have to click on it THREE times: once to
select it, once to activate the drop-down, and once to fully populate
it. I've been pretty curious about what causes it, but haven't asked.

That might not be just a Parallels thingy. For the longest time I
have had to click twice in FM 7.x on XP in dropdown lists in
dialogs. Once to populate the dropdown, the second time to generate
a scroll bar. Am I alone? A minor aggro - but still.

Interesting Printing Problem

2007-08-06 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

Please forgive the cross-post, but I wanted to share this with both
lists. I'm on Frame 7.2b144 on Windows XP. Yesterday, I had to convert
some documents over from Frame to Word. Saving out to Word didn't work
well, with crashes of Frame the few times I tried. So, I tried
converting to RTF and then opening those files in Word and saving out as
regular Word files. This worked mostly, but there were a couple of files
that it just didn't work on, with the result a FRAME file instead of an
RTF. So, with those files, I converted to HTML and then opened and saved
as Word files.

So far, so good. This morning, when I tried to print a Frame
document, all I got was a VERY small full-page version of the page
centered on the 8.5 x 11 page, but only measuring something like 2 x 1,
or so. I tried another document, same result. I tried a Word document
and it printed normally. So, I restarted Frame and now it's back to
normal size on the Frame pages. I don't understand exactly what
happened, but thought I'd let the groups know and see if there are some
answers. Is this something known or is it something new?

Thanks much,

right to left languages

2007-07-27 Thread Sam Beard
Graeme,

I recently bought an issue of a UK Mac magazine that included a CD
with a fully licensed version of Mellel on it. I haven't installed it on
my system at home, however. I've considered it, but haven't really felt
the need to do so at this time. For my written document needs at home,
Apple's iWorks does fine for me. I THINK the Mac magazine is Mac Format,
but I'm not sure and I loaned it out to a new Mac owner, so I can't
check it, either. I'm ALLEDGEDLY going to get it back at some point. ;-P

Peter Courlis asked

"Is there a S/W application or DTP S/W that is used for
Arabic, Farsi (left to right) languages in popular use, today?"

Dov replied:
"Yes, Microsoft Word (Windows only) provides this support.
InDesign ME offers this support (both platforms); maybe future
versions of InDesign might also natively support right-to-left"

I think it used to be the case on the Mac that right to left language
docs were mainly created in Nisus (http://nisus.com/). The OSX
upgrade of Nisus still does it, but you might want to enter "Hebrew"
in the user forums search and read some of the posts. The new kid on
the block is a word processor called Mellel
(http://www.redlers.com/index.html) which looks like it would be well
worth investigating. In fact, it may even be a plausible replacement
for FrameMaker for (English) technical writing on the Mac.

RE: Conditional Text Question

2007-07-17 Thread Sam Beard
Fred and Others,

Sorry it's taken me some time to get back to the list and those that
offered assistance, but I was sidetracked by another project.
Thanks to everyone for the great ideas and offers of help! At this
point, I think that Fred's idea is the best one. It resolves the issues
I had privately about having the conditional text for the other product
in the same file as what I wanted to have, albeit hidden, and it also
eliminates the major problem I had with the conditional text markers.
This way, if anyone else looks at the files later on, they (hopefully)
won't be confused with the (in some cases) double text if they make
things unconditional. It makes things nice and clean!
Thanks again to a great set of people! The techwr-l and framer's
lists are great resources with wonderful people subscribed and willing
to help out! I'll continue to read and (mostly) lurk, offering
suggestions or comments as warranted.

The Show/Hide Conditional Text dialog has an option box labeled
Sow Condition Indicators just below the Show list box. This
option toggles the color and other (e.g. underlining or strikethrough)
highlighting of all conditions that are set to show.

As far as archiving product-specific source files, another approach
that has not been mentioned is this one:
-Make a duplicate set of the complete, conditionalized book and
   source files.
-In the duplicate file set, use the Edit Condition Tag command in the
Conditional Text dialog to delete each of the condition tags that
relate to the other versions of the product. Each time you invoke
the command for a condition that is actually in use in the file,
you'll get a dialog that asks you whether you wish to make the
tagged text unconditional or delete the text. Since the tags you
are deleting relate to other product versions, choose the delete
   option.
-If you want to get serious, repeat the preceding step for the
conditions that are specific to the current version of the product,
but choose the make unconditional option.

All,

Thanks much for the help on this issue, but I need to clarify a few
things. First, I'm aware of the purpose of using conditional text, which
is what helped me to get this job. However, I have no real choice as to
having three separate files (my second point), because of our
documentation control system. We number our documents with a one-up
system, including the month/year as the last four parts of an
eight-digit number. If these documents were for a new product line, we
MIGHT be able to get away with putting them into a single number.
However, they are for two separate but similar product lines. The first
one is 1950 while the second one is 2158. Therefore, I have to maintain
having three separate books for each document, hiding and viewing the
appropriate conditional text and saving it to the appropriate folder on
our system. Unless someone has an idea about how to get around that,
then that's the way it is here. Before I started here, the documents
were COMPLETELY maintained as two separate books, even though there was
a LOT of cross-over text between them. Obviously, this made updating
them much more of a challenge and they are actually out of step with
each other by one version. I'm not sure that's something that will
change, either. I'll probably have to use a variable or something else
to indicate the version numbers of the two and conditionalize that, as
well.
I believe everyone that responded mentioned hiding the conditional
text indicators, so I'll need to check into how to change that. I wasn't
aware of how to change that, which is why I posted my question. So,
thanks to all of you for the tips on that. I'll see if I can determine
how to hide the indicators.

Subject: Conditional Text Question

Hello All,

I have a document that uses conditional text to delineate between two
different versions of the same basic product. Before I started this,
there were two separate books for each manual, even though there is a
LOT of cross-over text between them that is the same. I combined them
into a single set of master files and am marking the conditional text,
hiding what I don't want to see, and saving the resulting file for the
two separate books. Now, I have three files for each chapter of the
book: Master, Version 1, and Version 2. All well and good. However, I
also have ALL of the text in all three files, albeit Version 1's text is
hidden in Version 2, and vice-versa. Is there a way to permanently
remove the text for Version 1 from Version 2, and vice-versa, while
maintaining the master file? One of the reasons I need to do this is to
remove the borders around cells in a table that are conditionalized.
Currently, there are large colored borders around any table cells that
are marked as conditional.

I'm on Windows XP with Frame 7.2b144.

   Thanks much in advance!

change, either.
Thanks again and have a great day!

Sam:

If you conditionalize the whole row, that row should disappear when you
turn
the condition off. The colored borders indicate that you've correctly
conditionalized it (rather than just conditionalizing the text within
the
border).

If that doesn't make sense, let me know.

RE: Text Flow and Figure Numbering Issue

2007-06-11 Thread Sam Beard
Harry,

Thanks for the information, but perhaps there's some confusion. I'm
not using Word for any of this. It's all staying in Frame. The
information section I'm having a problem with is from another Frame
document that someone else wrote and I need to include in my document.
Everything worked fine except for the figure numbers for two figures
that are contained in the same anchored frame. The figure captions are
included in text boxes inside the larger anchored frame and the figures
themselves are in anchored frames inside the larger anchored frame. The
figure captions have no flow indicators assigned to them, unlike all the
other figure captions in the document, which is why they're out of order
with the rest of them, I believe.

I could simply redo those figures and their captions, separating them
out from the larger anchored frame, and I may yet have to do just that.
However, I'm trying to keep the look the same as much as I can, which is
why I asked for some help in figuring out how to assign the flow and
make them join the rest of the document. However, I'm not having any
luck on getting answers. Unless it's ME that's misunderstanding YOU!
Always a distinct possibility!

Thanks for the help!

In my experience with Word (since 2.0 or so (1985/86) I have not had
good success using frames. However, they work for some.

I would suggest the following.

Take the original information you have in FM.

Save the information in a Word document.

Capture the text.

Put it in the 'word' document.

Do what you need to do so that the format in your word document has is
'the same as' the FM image

Copy this information from the 'word' document

Paste it into the 'new' word document wheere you want it.

Set up your captions

Yo9u should see a 'good' segment in your document.

Text Flow and Figure Numbering Issue

2007-06-07 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

Please forgive the cross-posting, but I thought it best to post to
both lists to get the answer. I'm using Frame 7.2 on Windows XP.

I'm working on a chapter to a user's manual. In this chapter, I
copied and pasted in another document that serves as a technical note,
basically, when on its own. In my chapter, I'm adding it in to a
maintenance chapter. This document has one anchored frame in it that has
two graphics side by side, with figure title paragraphs below them. The
problem is that they're not in the same flow as the rest of the document
and, hence, the numbering is being thrown off. They're listed as numbers
7.8 and 7.9, with the appropriate cross-references to them in the text.
However, they SHOULD be numbered 7.13 and 7.14. I tried to connect the
text flows so the numbering would get corrected, but Frame won't let me
do that, probably because they are in text boxes inside an anchored
frame. So, how do I either connect them to the text flow of the rest of
the document or, at the least, change the numbers so they match up with
the rest of the document and don't throw off my numbering?

Thanks much in advance for the help!

Text Flow and Figure Numbering Issue

2007-06-07 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

More info: The information I'm inserting into this chapter from the
technical note was written by someone else. I'd like to try and keep the
information as visually similar as possible to avoid any confusion among
those that might see both. However, the only thing I can think of doing
to resolve this issue is to re-insert the images again, as two separate
anchored frames instead of inside a single frame. Is there another
option to keep it visually similar?

Thanks much in advance!

Chapter Numbering Issue

2007-03-29 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

I'm using Frame 7.2b144 on Windows XP.

We had some serious network issues starting sometime last Thursday or
so, continuing up until late last night/this morning. They seem to be
resolved for now, but we've had some strange issues come up since then.
For example, I have a book with several chapters in it. A couple of
these chapters were corrupted in some manner and two of them showed this
same numbering issue. I resolved it in one, but I'm not quite sure how,
so I don't know how to resolve it in the other. Instead of the chapter
and page numbering continuing as it should from chapter file to chapter
file, the book shows only one page in the chapter, even though there ARE
several more pages. For example, Chapter 8 is pages 309 to 316, Chapter
9 is 317 (with 42 pages actually in the file), and Chapter 10 is pages

RE: Chapter Numbering Issue

Fred and Richard,

Thanks much for the help! I did update the book and that, apparently,
was what I had done on the previous chapter that was messed up. It
worked on the second chapter and all is right with my numbering once
again.

Thanks much, again!

318 to 337. A previous file did the same thing, but I don't remember
what I did to resolve it. I tried a number of things and finally just
stumbled upon the answer. But, nothing seems to be working this time.

Frame's future @ Mac/UNIX

2007-03-02 Thread Sam Beard
Scott,

This isn't exactly true. Microsoft CHOSE not to export IE for Mac OS
X. This was done partly because Apple has their own browser, Safari, and
partly because of the rise in popularity of Firefox, Opera, Camino, and
others. The last version of IE for Mac was running quite well on Mac OS
X, but it was also the equivalent of at least one version behind Windows
IE, IIRC. Safari is generally well-regarded, as are the others listed
above. And, with MS pushing IE's "integration" into the Windows OS,
there wasn't really a desire on their part to continue work on something
without much tangible return. IE for Windows gets stuck into the Windows
OS in such a way that it's VERY difficult to fully disentangle it from
the OS and to fully use another browser instead. I've heard of many
times where someone THINKS they've disabled IE as a default browser, but
then something happens that launches IE instead of something else. As
always, YMMV greatly from this.

RE: Multiple Volume Documentation Set

2006-10-21 Thread Sam Beard
Hello,

We use Frame for basically what you're talking about, I believe. We
have several versions of our main software product and the previous
writers set up the documentation using variables and different color
text to indicate which words/paragraphs belongs to what version. It
works fairly well, but can be a tad confusing. One of the reasons for
this is the color choices for the variable text. There are three shades
of blue involved, and there's not THAT much separation between the
shades. I think a better plan, if possible, is to use a number of files
and pull them in where needed, if you have a large amount of common
material between them. However, when you're talking about simply a
paragraph here and there interspersed between paragraphs of common
material, that approach probably isn't very feasible.

these volumes would need to be developed for multiple locations.

My initial thought was to develop these documents and make extensive use
of variables (for the purpose of inserting the various plant names where
required) and conditional text to put information that is specific to

Chapter Problems

2006-10-13 Thread Sam Beard
Hello All,

I'm just getting into a new job, taking over from someone who was
basically thrust into the position and did the best she could, but
didn't know much about Frame. I'm creating a document template for all
of our documents, basing it on one of the existing documents, since
management likes at least certain aspects of it. I'm having a few
problems with that process. The current one deals with Chapter Name and
Chapter Number tags. I have a book file with three chapters and one
introduction chapter. The Chapter Number tag is coded as such:
C:Chapter\ n+. This SHOULD be starting the chapter numbers at 1 for
the first one and incrementing as they go along. I also have selected a
tag of Chapter Name to be the follow-up paragraph. However, in the
template, as a test, the next paragraph tag after pressing Enter is
another Chapter Number tag. Also, I've updated the book and the three
individual chapters are all numbered at 1. Any ideas on these issues
would be GREATLY appreciated!

RE: OS 9 Applications on Tiger

2006-10-10 Thread Sam Beard
All,

I stand corrected! I'm guessing my mistake in this was with the
computers themselves and NOT the operating systems. I thought that
Classic was also tied to the OS as well as the computer. Apparently,
it's only tied to the computer. I believe that the last round of G4s and
the G5s didn't allow dual-booting into OS 9 as well as OS X. I wasn't
aware that Tiger still allowed a Classic environment.
I recently bought a new Mac Pro desktop, Intel-based, so this
knowledge doesn't help me any in my home situation, but it's still nice
to know! Thanks much, everyone, for their input and on setting me
straight on this!

I'm running this on a Mac Mini with a G4 proc.

It's been a long time since I set it up, but as best as I can remember,
I installed the Classic environment as part of the initial setup and
configuration of Tiger. This required the use of a Classic
environment disk (again, if I remember correctly).

When I try to open a Classic (OS9) application, the Classic environment
opens automatically within OS X and the application I originally tried
to open runs within this. I don't boot to Classic or do any dual
booting shenanigans.

In the System Preferences, there is a Classic icon under System that
allows me to set various Classic options, including starting when
logging in, warning before starting Classic, various memory usage
settings for Classic, and more.

OS 9/Classic does NOT appear as an option when under Startup Disk
preferences.

Sorry I can't provide too many details. It's been a long time since I
initially set it up and I use Classic less and less frequently every
week that passes. At least I know that in at least my circumstance,
Classic does work on Tiger.

Michael and Scott,

This is intriguing to me. My understanding was that Classic, and
therefore OS 9, wouldn't run on any of the later machines, particularly
any Intel-based machines. Are either of you running one of these? What
machines are you running? Are you running OS 9 in emulation of some sort
or as a stand-alone OS, that you can choose upon start-up?
In other words, more details, please! ;-P

Ann,

As far as I'm aware, Tiger does NOT support OS 9 in any form. Mac OS
X up to somewhere around 10.3 or so WOULD run OS 9 apps in, basically,
emulation form in what was known as Classic. However, OS X 10.4 dropped
that provision, as far as I know. But, then again, if an Apple rep told
you this, it might be true. Was the rep one of the sales phone reps or a
tech support rep, either at an Apple store or via the phone support? If
there's an Apple store near you, you might consider dropping in there
and asking them about your situation. The people staffing Apple's genius

out, and NOT just because that's what they get paid for, either!

RE: OS 9 Applications on Tiger

2006-10-10 Thread Sam Beard
Hey Steve,

Thanks for the input. Yes, I was mistakenly thinking that the issue
was with the OS itself. I knew that the last round, I believe, of G4s as
well as the G5s didn't support dual-booting. They still ran Classic, I
believe, but not straight OS 9. I also knew that Apple wasn't porting
anything OS 9/Classic-related over to the new Intel-based Macs. I wasn't
aware that, as it appears people are saying from this thread, that Adobe
hasn't ported over Frame to run in OS X. Is that the case? Anyone heard
anything about when Adobe might be releasing an OS X version, if that is
the case?

Thanks much,

I can see where some of this confusion is coming from.

First off, Sam, your initial assertion of 'Tiger does NOT support OS 9
in any form' is misleading (forgive my bluntness): it's not a Tiger
(i.e. OS) restriction, but a hardware restriction. All versions of OS X
have supported OS 9 in its Classic form, a software wrapper that allows
a full OS 9 to run within the OS X environment. And within that,
FrameMaker runs just fine, as long as you follow the guidelines given
here:

http://www.fm4osx.org/classic.html

What *is* true is that none of the most recent range of Intel-chipped
Macs run Classic. This is hardware issue: Apple chose not to port
Classic to these machines. This is a situation that a lot of clever
people are working on, as Apple appears to be unaware that many Mac
users are still dependent on legacy software. But for FrameMaker, the
option at present on these machines is to run one of the software
solutions that support Windows or Windows apps:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/

http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/

Finally, Peter Gold's point about dual-boot Macs only applies to older
hardware models. I forget when the last dual-boot Mac was dropped, but
you should be able to find out here:

http://www.apple-history.com/

Fwiw, I have a 2000-vintage Cube that is dual boot, and a 2004-vintage
G4 that is not, so it was sometime between those years.

OS 9 Applications on Tiger

This required the use of a "Classic"
environment disk (again, if I remember correctly).

When I try to open a Classic (OS9) application, the Classic environment
opens automatically within OS X and the application I originally tried
to open runs within this. I don't boot to Classic or do any dual
booting shenanigans.

In the System Preferences, there is a "Classic" icon under "System" that
allows me to set various Classic options, including starting when
logging in, warning before starting Classic, various memory usage
settings for Classic, and more.
