Re: Flare vs DITA

2015-04-13 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
My apologies for the format; I seem to be thinking in bullets this morning.

* Flare is a tool; DITA is a standard (or collection of standards).
* You can use Flare to produce DITA
(http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare11/Content/DITA/About_DITA.htm)
* There are multiple other tools that can produce DITA output (which is
basically a subset of XML).
* You can do topic-based writing for other formats. (I did that for WinHelp and
WebHelp for years.)
* As Shmuel notes, the big step with DITA is that it has a focus on typed
content, which can allow you to do additional things with the content more
easily.

IMHO, topic-based authoring is writing content in small chunks or modules. To
 quote Wikipedia:

A topic is a discrete piece of content that is about a specific subject,
has an identifiable purpose, and can stand alone (does not need to be
presented in context for the end-user to make sense of the content). Topics
are also reusable http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reuse . They can, when
constructed properly (without reliance on other content for its meaning), be
reused in any context anywhere needed.

It does not imply that the content is typed (specialized).

DITA is content that is marked up semantically. Although you can create
content in DITA that is topic-based, you don't have to.

So the difference at the content level between Flare and DITA is that content
written in Flare is unstructured and not marked up semantically, and DITA is
 structured and marked up semantically.

Which approach is more advantageous is going to depend on what you need
overall now and in the future.

Re: FM7 and Zapf Dingbats

2015-04-13 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
It could be that you have not added wherever the fonts are stored to the
FrameMaker Font path.
IIRC, in 7.2 there was an option under FilePreferences that allowed you to
specify the path(s) that FM would look for the font files.
You can also edit the maker.ini file directly to add the path.

I tried to paste the same character into a LibreOffice Writer new document

In stock Word, it is usually three dashes to get to an em-dash, two dashes
gets you an en-dash (a different character). This is using the auto-correct
feature, and you can change its behavior pretty easily too.

Plus (at least in Word 2013 and Office 2013 products) typing a “space, dash,
space” followed by another word and then a space converts the “space, dash,
space” to “space, en-dash, space”. Not sure which option selects this
behavior, but I don’t think it is auto-correct, since the change is elsewhere
compared to the text entry location. It is also quite specific – having extra
(or missing one) spaces before or after the dash does not work, for example.

In FrameMaker, I just use the ALT 0151 key sequence to get an em-dash. There
is also a menu pull-down that allows you to insert various common symbols –
 not just an em-dash.

Hey Keith—
I'm pleased to read that ePub is working for you. I don't find it a *bad* tool,
just problematic (and every tool has its own problems).

I was reporting on the experience I and the other writers at my current employer
have found; which was that the more local you could make things, the better.
I don't know what my coworkers are using (I'm remote), but I do know that they
are laptops. I'm running a mid-level i5 Quadcore with 16GB RAM and multiple TB
of disk space.
We have found that what takes me 5 min takes them 60+ min. (1300pp), and about 2
min/45 min (800pp, but more graphics (PNGs).

As for the template/stationery issue, again, I have to go by the problems the
writer who is our dedicated person for that has discussed with me, and the fact
that we are having to run two different versions of ePubExpress because of
licencing issues (and corporate bean counting); and that either the stylesheet
writer will need to keep two separate style sheets in sync, or some writers will
be able to process only some docs (and others, others).

The company is actually working at dropping all copies of FM and WebWorks, and
moving to DITA (SDL+XMetaL). I will say that the stylesheet issues there are
currently *much* worse than with FM/WWP, mostly because the company has
contracted with some third party to control them. $ for any change, so
changes only happen every 6 mo or so. Somebody related to upper management must
have needed work, or had a cousin who did. grin

I don’t think getting stationery or templates set up correctly is any more
time consuming in WebWorks than it would be in RoboHelp or in the Publish

proper online format, which is a similar process in all three programs. If you
have manual customizations (tweaks to CSS or scripts made outside of the GUI),
it’s true that update releases can cause problems, but recent versions of
WebWorks make it pretty straightforward to find the source of any problems.

Re: FM9 - Fm files have disappeared from disk

2014-03-11 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
I have run into this when working remotely with Win 7 (and possibly Win8). I
found the problem to be intermittent, and the only commonality to the failures
I had was that they both occurred on book regeneration (which is
file-transaction intensive). I followed the guidance in
 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff686200.aspx .

I had to manually create the Windows registry entries DirectoryCacheLifetime
and FileNotFoundCacheLifetime and set them to 0 (zero).
I have not had problems since, but have also been very cautious as to how I have
regenerated FM books.

Re: Round-trip revisions via MS Word. Alternate methods?

2014-02-25 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
If you are using FM's native RTF, it's always been a bit dodgy.
(Though the PDF-to-Word exporter is even more so!)

I would *highly* recommend that you invest in a copy of MIF2Go
(http://mif2go.com/). It provides a MUCH better output.

 Good morning,

We have used the same authoring process for eons: Authors/editors work in MS
Word, as well as preliminary indexing work. I then take the MS Word file,
import into FM (unstructured) and do the final print-ready formatting, making
things adhere to our publishing standards and tightening up consistency.

As a process it work well... until it's time to revise the book for the next
 edition.

Our authors and editors will ONLY work in MS Word. PDF comments/revisions will
not work, as there frequently are extensive revisions including insertion of
new sections (multiple pages) of content, as well as shuffling of content.

When I export the final FM version back to MS Word for them to work on, the
conversion is VERY crude and frequently requires extensive work on the
post-conversion Word files for the editors to be able to work within the
 files.

Then of course there's the reformatting from scratch in FM when the revisions
are done (which actually is faster and more reliable than trying to reconcile
changes in the MS Word version with the existing FM version).

Is there a better way to perform the round-trip process given the MS Word
requirement, and barring that, are there better ways/tools to get cleaner MS
Word files from FM than exporting to RTF?

Would making the change from unstructured to structured FM on my part help in
 this regard?

 Environment:

 Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise
Framemaker 10 (unstructured) [NOTE: TCS 5 is on order but I have not received
 it yet.]
 Microsoft Office 2010

 Thank you in advance.

My biggest kvetch about all the structured doc tools I've seen (and I've been
using them as far back as IBM's BookMaster) is that they generally output like
sausage machines.
All the text is simply extruded onto the page, with no awareness of how people
read documents or process information.

It is true that s ome output processors/digesters can be instructed on how to
handle things such as widows and orphans, and even some semi-intelligent
hyphenation. But none of them (in my experience) produce layouts anywhere as
near good as what even a moderately-educated human can do. (kerning, leading,
knowing what chunks need to stay together to be useful, etc. )

Their output is OK for very small chunk information like help pages, but
dreadful for any document that requires more than that.
I'm not completely opposed to them; using such tools helps writing teams
standardize things --- and DITA (as a philosophy of information organization)
does help rationalize what can otherwise be messy organization. And they can
help with reuse (but not as much as you might think, once you start factoring in
the overhead of finding the resuable chunks, and then writing around them so
that they don't read like an undigested lump in the middle of your prose!)

FWIW, we have just started seeing this behavior as well.
Running Frame 9 remotely through a Citrix Desktop, working on files that are
stored on a separate remote server.
Files (both main and backup) disappear from the directory.
Appears to happen when the book is regenerated.

In 20+ years of working with FM, I have never seen this problem before.

The publications department where I work has experienced a persistent file

local drive. When copying FrameMaker projects to the local hard-drive the
problem does not occur. However, it's essential to work off the network share
drive so that other writers see FrameMaker locked files and do not work on
 those files simultaneously.

  Steps to reproduce issue follow.

  Scenario #1:
 1. Open a FrameMaker book file (where the book and associated FM files are
contained in a file folder) on the network share drive.
 2. Generate a TOC.

Result: Files in book randomly disappear from FrameMaker project
folder. After restoring the files and running the TOC again, files
randomly vanish again. I use the phrase randomly vanish because
which files vanish is unpredictable and constantly changing every
time the TOC is generated.

 Scenario #2:
 1. Open a FrameMaker book file (where the book and associated FM files are
contained in a file folder) on the network share drive.
 2. Highlight all the files in the book.
 3. Select View Hide Conditional Text Indicators.

Result: Similar to Scenario #1.

 Scenario #3:
 1. Open a FrameMaker book file (where the book and associated FM files are
contained in a file folder) on the network share drive.
 2. Highlight all the files in the book.
 3. Select Format Document Change Bars.
 4. Modify any setting(s) within the Change Bars Properties dialog box.
 5. Click Set.

Result: Similar to Scenario #1.

My theory is that a bug in FrameMaker while using operations on multiple
files (a common denominator in Scenarios 1-3) is causing the files to get
deleted on the network drive. Although the network folder looks identical
in Windows 7, each file operation is going over the network instead of
directly to files on the local hard-drive.

Is there a network version of FrameMaker? The reason the company doesn't have
a network version, if such a version exists, is because each writer has a
licensed FrameMaker copy on their local machine. FrameMaker interacts with
network folders as if these folders were local folders. However, all operating
system file operations are going over the network instead of going to the
local drive. The network must therefore emulate the local drive. Is there a
network version of FrameMaker that addresses this dynamic, or is the version
sold for individual users supposed to operate on both local and network
drives? If the latter is the case, then this could be a bug.

Again, we need to work off the network because if multiple writers are
working on separate features within a single book, the only method of avoiding
collisions between writers is through the FrameMaker file locking feature. By
copying files from the network to a local drive, making changes, and then
copying the files back to the network, there is a danger of over-writing
another writer's work. I can personally get away with copying down files
because I'm assigned to an entire book, but that is not always the case.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, please share your workaround.

  Thanks,
  Eugene

FrameMaker file deletion bug

2013-09-01 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
FWIW, we have just started seeing this behavior as well.
Running Frame 9 remotely through a Citrix Desktop, working on files that are
stored on a separate remote server.
Files (both main and backup) disappear from the directory.
Appears to happen when the book is regenerated.

In 20+ years of working with FM, I have never seen this problem before.

one that was the width of punctuation, and I doubt if there is one, since
how much space a mark of punctuation takes up depends on the mark in
proportional spacing. For example, a ? will take up more room than a !.

Creating a clickable link for email in a frame (to pdf) document

2013-06-14 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
Hello Theresa--
You can't use a variable in this case.
What you want to do is have a "word" (for example "TdeV at bstw.com") that has
the
hypertext marker GoTO URL "mailto:TdeV at bstw.com" in it.
Then you must tag the word with a character format tag (such as "link" -- you
may need to create this tag).

RE: Line numbering tables in FM11?

2013-02-27 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
This is old-school, but If your line spacing is standard, one option would
be to place a new flow on the master page(s) just wide enough for the largest
line number.
On the body page(s), you would insert into that flow a series of autonumbered
paragraphs with no other content. (They should have a different flow ID than any
other series of numbered paras in the document.)

If you needed to adjust for spacing around heads, you could create a set of
head number paras that would use the same flow ID, but are tweaked to match
the head spacing. The only problem with this is that applying the para tags
would be a manual process. You'd have to do a similar thing for figures.

Did you run it as administrator or with an administrator-priviledged account?

I’ve got the same problem, but there is a better and quicker solution than

Re: FM 10 Licence Failure

2013-01-01 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
FWIW, I just wasted 2.5 h today with Adobe Technical support, and they don't
have a clue about what might be causing the FM10 license failure.
We have uninstalled, installed, uninstalled and run the Adobe CS cleaner, then
reinstalled, and gotten exactly nowhere, other than to prove that none of the
known fixes work.

My personal suspicion is that some programmer put a drop-dead date in the
licensing application used for FM10 only of Jan 1 2013 (or possibly
12:59:59:12:2012), and nobody at Adobe tested for operation beyond that date.
(Reason? All the other applications in TC Suite 3.5 work just fine...)

Wonder if we can bill Adobe for all the lost productivity hours

Seriously annoyed (but probably not as annoyed as Tom Aldous is going to be...)

Question about char tag override indicator

2012-09-06 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
Hey all.. got a puzzler for you.

In FM10, I have a document that has character tags. One of these is bold, which
has everything set to as-is but the font weight.

For some reason, when I apply the tag, it's always marked with an asterisk, even
if I apply Default Para Font first, and then Bold.

Saving the doc doesn't seem to change the indicator either.

Any idea what might be happening, other than a bug in FM?

Everything works beautifully except I can't figure out how to keep the caption
with the graphic. Sometimes the text is not as tall as the graphic, so I would
have to use a series of returns to move the cursor down to beneath the
anchored frame, and enter the caption there. This is do-able but clunky and
prone to problems if the text is ever edited.

I therefore created a text frame inside the anchored frame and put the caption
there, which works physically but breaks the hyperlinks to the cross-reference
in the text (See Figure X.) For the time being, I've deleted the x-refs,
since they aren't really necessary in such an obvious page layout. (But one of
my reviewers is absolutely going to say, where's the 'See Figure X' Be
 copnsistent! Consistency above all else!!)

How can I get a caption with working hyperlinks positioned directly under the
 anchored frame?

save it as a graphic, and then assign that graphic for the link in Snow

Alternatively, you could extract the FM icon from the FM DLL, (or screencap it)
save it as a graphic, and then assign that graphic for the link in Snow
Leopard

Re: FM10 does not output Adobe PDF

2011-05-08 Thread gr...@hedgewizard.net
FWIW, I was told (and I hope incorrectly) by an Adobe support person that FM10
requires the installation of a stand-alone copy of Acrobat to produce PDFs.  So
I'm using a 3rd-party app with GhostScript to produce my PDFs rather than
sending Adobe more money for something that should have been included in the FM
package.

 Hello,
I just loaded FM10 on Windows 7 64. I tried to print to Adobe PDF. I have the
request for filename selected, however, it prints, there are no error
messages, and I can't find the file. If I save the file as PDF, it saves OK,
however, I can't get the bookmarks that way. Can someone tell me if there is a
setting that I don't have correct. This worked fine on FM9.

MIF2GO is an excellent product, well-maintained and well-supported.  I've been a
happy user of it for many many years.

  Hi Framers,

Has anyone taken a gander at this product/service yet? I'm occasionally
plagued by co-workers who want editable Word versions of docs I create in
Frame. The Frame export to RTF leaves a whole lot to be desired and I'm
wondering if this new thing will produce a better formatted RTF file. Anyone
know what the limitations are? Does it choke on master pages and graphics?

Needless to say, the FAQs on the Adobe site aren't the questions I'd be
  asking.

  Thanks.
