False, at least as of a few months ago. You can also buy an annual
subscription for one person for $800 or $900.

Bill,

Pricing for ePublisher settled down more than a year ago. Changes were
made to the EULA to allow folks to purchase just what they need, no
more, no less. Express seats are a cheaper alternative for folks who
just have to run conversion without designing targets. Those go for
$295 per year. And finally, with our change over to a contract
licensing model, you have full control over who uses the seats you do
purchase. They are yours to use and abuse as you like.

Again, all of this related to WebWorks ePublisher. If you are thinking
about have things were done for WebWorks Publisher a few years back,
you'd see things are quite different now.

2010-10-13 Thread Pam Reichert
I have been using WebWorks epublisher Pro version 9.2 to convert our
FrameMaker documents into online help for our applications. Recently my
laptop started having problems and they are moving me to a new laptop. The
writer who installed epublisher on my laptop is no longer with the company
and we can’t find the CD with a serial number. I noticed a version of
WebWorks comes on the FrameMaker 7.2 CD but it is called WebWorks Standard.
I thought maybe this is where the WebWorks came from. Is WebWorks Standard
the same as ePublisher pro? Even if it is, no serial number I find on any
of our CDs seems to work with it and Adobe can’t seem to help me. When I go
to the WebWorks page I can’t get help there either because I don’t have a
maintenance contract. I don’t think WebWorks actually *wants* customers.
When I try to find out how much it costs to buy a new copy, no prices are
listed unless you have a sales person call you. We don’t have phones in
our office.

I am pretty fed up with it all and am thinking of moving the help to a new
platform. Can you suggest another help platform that works well with
FrameMaker files and looks similar to ePublisher? I need to produce online
help in both .chm files and html files.

Hi Pam

No, WebWorks Standard is not the same as ePublisher Pro.

There is a Yahoo wwp-user group, so you can post your question there:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wwp-users/

Quadralay (Ben Allums) is actively participating in that group, so I'm sure
you will get help there.

Or you may find some answers in their wiki:

Pam,
Mif2Go (www.omsys.com). They have a free demo that you can try before you buy.
It works as a Frame plugin and works with just about any version of Frame.
Features and all that info on what it can convert too is available on their
website. Costs less than $300, plus a yearly maintenance/upgrade fee. It will
do everything that WebWorks can do, and probably more. If you are doing DITA,
they have a Dita2Go also.

ePublisher Pro and WebWorks Standard are two different products. ePublisher Pro
is the current WebWorks variant. The Standard version was shipped with Frame
7.2, more as a teaser I think.

If I was a betting person, I would bet that you will be hearing from Jeremy
this morning with similar words on Mif2Go.

Re: Help Tools

2010-10-13 Thread Art Campbell
Webworks standard is an early version of ePublisher. The Standard and
Pro essentially mean that one cannot modify templates; the
professional version can.

In any case, whatever tool you use is likely to achieve the look and
feel of your help file by manipulating CSS style sheets, not by
proprietary coding, so I think you have severral choices for help
tools.

If you've done massive amounts of tweaking to the ePublisher
templates, that may be your easiest way to go. Along with that, I
can't believe that their customer support department can't give you a
new code There must be documentation on the purchase somewhere --
a PO or credit card info.

However, if you're staring from scratch, I'd go with either MIF2Go
from omsys.com or RoboHelp, as in the Technical Communication Suite.
Both are strong and well-integrated. I prefer MIF2Go for most projects
because it's simpler for me to use (I'm a config file kind of guy) and
bulltproof once it's set up. And their customer support is exemplary.
But RoboHelp comes with fancier, spiffier templates and it's designed
to integrate well with Frame at the menu level.

I know MIF2Ggo and Robohelp have free eval versions available. I think
it's waning in popularity recently, but a number of people are big
fans of Flare, so that's a possible third avenue to go down, although
that's more of an authoring package rather than a conversion tool to
pull content from Frame.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Art

Not even close.

Well, you can contact sales here and explain your situation.

No phones in your office? Does not compute.

They have an interesting approach to pricing, and one that I'm not too
keen on. They size up your need and price you according to how many
seats and what types of technologies you need. They're taking a
CMS-like approach to product sales.

I am pretty fed up with it all and am thinking of moving the help to a new

Adobe's Technical Communication Suite. It has FrameMaker and RoboHelp
(with integration between the two, which you don't get if you buy the
products stand-alone) plus Acrobat, Captivate and Photoshop.

http://www.adobe.com/products/technicalcommunicationsuite/

It'll take some getting used to, but I've found it to be a decent
alternative to WebWorks (and I've been a WebWorks user/expert since
1998).

Pam,

I'm sorry you're having such trouble getting in touch with WebWorks.
You can reach Sales and Customer Service via email (either
sa...@webworks.com or customerserv...@webworks.com).

Regarding pricing, pricing starts at $795 for a one year subscription to
ePublisher. Perpetual licenses are also available. Sales can give you
all the details.

One thing I will point out is that though ePublisher 9.2 is EOLed, the
9.2 formats are still supported as part of ePublisher 2010.2. What that
means is that you can continue using custom code without concern for
code conflicts. This was made possible in our 2009.3 release, which
added legacy format compatibility options. If you have no custom code
in your project, then you can easily switch to the latest, greatest
format versions that ship with 2010.2.

False, at least as of a few months ago. You can also buy an annual

Adobe's Technical Communication Suite. It has FrameMaker and RoboHelp
(with integration between the two, which you don't get if you buy the
products stand-alone) plus Acrobat, Captivate and Photoshop.

It'll take some getting used to, but I've found it to be a decent

No, WebWorks Standard is not the same as ePublisher Pro.

There is a Yahoo wwp-user group, so you can post your question there:

Good luck!

Cheers,
Art

All,

Thanks everyone for your suggestions with my Help tools question. I will
definitely look into Mif2Go and I've used RoboHelp in the past, although

give WebWorks another try...maybe I can get some help from them.

2010-10-13 Thread Davis, Jessica D.
Pam,

The basic Web Works that shipped with Frame 7.2 may work for you *if*
you have all of the conversion templates from ePublisher and you don't
modify anything in the template that will break the conversion rules.
It's basically a compiler. The idea was you need one license of Pro to
build and maintain your conversion templates, then you distribute those
templates to other writers. They could use the pre-defined templates
with the standard WebWorks option to generate help.

As for other conversion tools, there are several out there: Robohelp,
MifToGo, Madcap Flare.

We currently are using MadCap Flare 5.something and it works, but it's
been a little painful getting everything to work correctly. The graphic
conversion settings are counter intuitive. If you select the option to
not convert the graphics, which is usually what you do when you want to
preserve the quality, the graphics come out smooshed. Instead, you have
to tell it to convert and then you set up a PDF job options with super
high quality graphic rendering parameters and have it use those job
options. There's also a known issue in which Flare doesn't like
non-breaking characters, so we have to import templates before the
online help build to replace all variables and x-ref formats with
versions that do not contain non-breaking characters. It's kind of a
pain and their tech support didn't seem to understand the problem or the
work around, but they told me they opened an issue for it. The forums
seem to know more about the product than the tech support department.
I'm thinking about using FrameScript to automate this preparation task.

I've heard good things about Mif2Go and Robohelp.

Thanks,
Jess

I had a similar issue with a recent WebWorks upgrade which I solved by
calling them: 877-693-2967. It bothered me that that was required but
it got me to where I needed to be. WebWorks changed licensing models
between 9.2 and ePublisher and that might be an issue but it could be
easily solved with a call.

Excellent point Art! However, if folks are looking to deliver to
non-HTML targets, ePublisher can handle that as well given its ability
to deeply restructure your content. RTF, PDF XSL-FO, and Wiki targets
are good examples of this.

I believe Pam's issue is that WebWorks no longer makes EOLed product
builds available for download. I'm not sure license keys are the problem.

All excellent tools. I will point out that we've been working really
hard to make ePublisher a great tool for single-sourcing both your
content and your design. I'd just ask that you compare our latest,
greatest ePublisher 2010.2 against current MIF2Go, RoboHelp, and Flare
packages.

I have been using WebWorks epublisher Pro version 9.2 to convert our
FrameMaker documents into online help for our applications. Recently my
laptop started having problems and they are moving me to a new laptop.
The
writer who installed epublisher on my laptop is no longer with the
company
and we can't find the CD with a serial number. I noticed a version of
WebWorks comes on the FrameMaker 7.2 CD but it is called WebWorks
Standard.
I thought maybe this is where the WebWorks came from. Is WebWorks
Standard
the same as ePublisher pro? Even if it is, no serial number I find on
any
of our CDs seems to work with it and Adobe can't seem to help me. When
I go
to the WebWorks page I can't get help there either because I don't have
a
maintenance contract. I don't think WebWorks actually *wants*
customers.
When I try to find out how much it costs to buy a new copy, no prices
are
listed unless you have a sales person call you. We don't have phones
in
our office.

I am pretty fed up with it all and am thinking of moving the help to a
new
platform. Can you suggest another help platform that works well with
FrameMaker files and looks similar to ePublisher? I need to produce
online
help in both .chm files and html files.

Adobe's Technical Communication Suite. It has FrameMaker and RoboHelp
(with integration between the two, which you don't get if you buy the
products stand-alone) plus Acrobat, Captivate and Photoshop.

http://www.adobe.com/products/technicalcommunicationsuite/

It'll take some getting used to, but I've found it to be a decent
alternative to WebWorks (and I've been a WebWorks user/expert since
1998).

Truth be told, I haven't looked into their pricing in a while, mainly
because my clients haven't needed it. But it was certainly the case
last time I looked into pricing.

Pam,

I'm sorry you're having such trouble getting in touch with WebWorks.
You can reach Sales and Customer Service via email (either
 or ).

Don't be so hasty and judgmental. WebWorks is a fine company with an
excellent product. They have a Yahoo group (I think it's called ePub)
that you can post your question to. Or call them, they will help you.

If nothing else, send an email to Ben Allums, allums at webworks.com, I
think. I've had a lot of great experiences with them. Don't abandon
them because of this.

False, at least as of a few months ago. You can also buy an annual
subscription for one person for $800 or $900.

My mistake. I see Pam also needs her license key. Unfortunately, to
maintain EOL product status, we cannot re-issue keys for EOLed products.

Pam, you might be able to locate the keys if you can still run
ePublisher on the old system.

Help tools to convert FrameMaker source files

2008-01-23 Thread paul_framers
Hi,

In 2004, I used WebWorks Publisher 2003 for FrameMaker to convert FrameMaker
source files to WebWorks Help files for my clients.

Today, I have a client who wants to convert FrameMaker files to a Help system
and I need to find the best Help conversion tool available now. I could use
your help with information and recommendations.

I am currently evaluating the pros and cons of using these three tools with
FrameMaker 7.2 (or FrameMaker 8 if necessary):

RoboHelp 7
MadCap Flare
ePublisher

I've heard good things about Flare but what are your thoughts about it? I'm a
little concerned that MadCap and Quadralay are not large companies and I wonder
about their long term availability. That is not my concern for RoboHelp now
that Adobe is developing it. But can RoboHelp generate cross-platform help as
well as Flare or ePublisher? Is ePublisher a good tool and not as buggy as it
was when it first shipped?

My client needs a help system that can be called from a client GUI and will
display in a browser on Windows or Solaris 9 or 10. Mac is not a requirement.

I'd like to hear from folks who have done this kind of comparison and are now
actively using one of these tools. Why did you choose it and what is your
experience with it now? Would you recommend it and where is it deficient in
meeting your needs?

Thanks in advance!
