What method are you using to forward messages between the MTA and amavisd-new? Have you copied the appropriate plug-in .cf files for SA into `/usr/local/etc/mail/spamassassin`? What are the errors presented before that? It sounds like it can't mount the kernel floppy image for whatever reason. I'd have to suggest that you've try other floppy disk drives and disks to rule out those as points of failure. Also think of the drive that you used to make the floppy diskettes. Since floppies rely on an magnetic medium, with heads to record a stream of data across the surface, certain types of alignment issues can occur. Think of this like a cassette tape recording that sounds fine in your stereo at home but has a horrible hissing sound in your car. Or even the white 'noise' with rented video cassettes, where one must adjust the 'tracking'. I wouldn't give up on this yet but certainly try other floppy drives in both ends and different diskettes. You could even try using the *same* floppy disk drive to make the floppy disks in another computer and re-transplant it back into the target machine. Hi James, As far as being able to easily create articles, create a book, and publish to a website, IMHO Apple OSX's ease-of-use and seamless design takes the cake. All new Macs (including the iMac) come with a very easy to use (and powerful) set of applications called 'iLife'. Included is the 'iWeb' application, which makes the task of creating and updating an attractive web space quite simple. More information on this 'iWeb' app can be found here: http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb/ On top of this, a 30-day trial for the 'iWork' bundle, which includes a word processor/desktop publishing app called 'Pages' and presentation software called 'Keynote' (basically PowerPoint on steroids, this is what Al Gore used to create his much-ballyhooed 'PowerPoint' presentation with). If you want to keep using it, it's only $79 (versus $200+ for the basic MS Office Suite for Windows). Pretty good value for software that fuses simplicity and power. It can also import all of your old MS Word documents without too much fuss. Here's some info on that: http://www.apple.com/iwork/pages/ I really don't mean to sound like I work for Apple, but since everyone has given the opensource/FreeBSD side of your questions a fairly good beating, I thought I'd present the other end of your email a fair treatment. All of this can be done very well on FreeBSD (or Linux, or Windows) just the same, but as far as what you're asking, OSX truly does make the whole job a heck of a lot easier, without sacrificing much functionality. Also for 99eur/month you get a dual opteron w/ 2x160GB SATA2 disks, 1GB DDRII, linked to a 100mbps network (shared but burstable) with no traffic limit. But the guy who called me to help me with my questions doesn't understand much of anything and he tought Freebsd was a linux distro plus he refuses to either install freebsd on the machine or put a CD on the server tray and plug in a serial cable to the machine so I can install it. Re: Starting a service on boot
Perhaps you could put a debug point in the script to ensure it is being started (e.g. touch a file or echo something to the terminal), and if it is indeed being run by rc, move the point until you find out where it's breaking? Unfortunately, although running the script directly as root starts it up just fine, it's not starting at boot time. I've found documentation that says there are two basic steps to follow: 1) Create a script named, say, 'foo' starting the program, place it in /etc/rc.d/, and make sure it satisfies a few minimal requirements (see script below). 2) Edit rc.conf to add "foo_enable=YES" so the init system knows to start the new program. I've done (2), and here's the script for (1) (anything between <> is me redacting a username, it's obviously not that way in the script): (/etc/rc.d)$ cat cc #!/bin/sh # # PROVIDE: cc # REQUIRE: DAEMON . /etc/rc.subr name="cc" rcvar=`set_rcvar` command="/home//cruisecontrol.sh" command_args="&" cc_user="" load_rc_config $name run_rc_command "$1" I can also check if it's enabled: (/etc/rc.d)$ ./cc rcvar # cc $cc_enable=YES I haven't found anything interesting in the system logs from the last boot - any ideas why it's not starting up? It really wouldn't take that much effort, and any bandwidth necessary for seeding, especially initial seeding, could be re-allocated out of what is already being used for direct downloads. Since torrent is a rather widely-accepted means of downloading and clients are available for pretty much every platform, it could become the primary vector for distributing large binaries (such as ISOs) that put a sustained burden on the donated mirrors. Direct downloads could still be offered for these files for compatibility's sake, albeit at a reduced rate, using shaping or whatever else. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
