Upgrading 6.4 to 7.2 with gmirror
I am about to finally go for the 7.x line, but am a little hesitant. My concern is whether it will cause any problems to do a source upgrade from 6.4 (patched to 6.4-RELEASE-p3) to RELENG_7_2 on a gmirror install (/, /usr, /var, and /tmp). Can I go directly to RELENG_7_2? Would it work having / on the gmirror? Is there anything else specific I should think about? -- Kjell ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org

Dual boot FreeBSD 4.10 and FreeBSD 5.3
I'm about to make the switch from 4.10 to 5.3. However, I don't want to do it in one go, but rather first install 5.3 on a separate physical disk and get all applications installed and configured correctly. Once I've completed the process, the scenario is a RAID-1 setup (gmirror is the route I've chosen after extensive reading). Therefore, I first want to install 5.3 on ad6 (actually ad6s1 I believe) and dual boot between ad4s1(4.10) and ad6s1(5.3) during the migration phase. I'm a bit uncertain as to the procedure to get to the dual boot status. Currently, I have no boot manager installed. Can I install 5.3 onto ad6s1 and from sysinstall install the FreeBSD Boot Manager to both ad4 and ad6? Or should I first do 'fdisk -B -b /boot/boot0 ad4' from within 4.10 (as per the handbook)? Or is 'boot0cfg -B ad4' the proper way of doing it? But I will reload my second box with php5/apache13 and edit the above section into the httpd.conf file to confirm that it works. Kjell In this case, we use PHP to interpret everything as the server is low traffic and we use PHP in docs that are saved as *.html as well (I think we added *.asp as a jibe at M$ ) At the moment I've no shell at the PHP5 box, but I must assume it's the same there. MBR problem
I just installed FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE (using the mini-install CD) on my laptop which already had Win XP Home + Win XP Pro on it. During partition definition I chose not to touch the MBR. (I wanted to make use of Windows boot.ini for booting into FreeBSD.) Nevertheless, whenever I boot I get directly to the FreeBSD boot menu where there's no option to boot Windows. disk layout: ad0s1: 31 MB DELL slice ad0s2: 8001 MB Windows XP Home slice ad0s3: 8510 MB extended DOS slice with three logical Win partitions (one of them Windows XP Professional) ad0s4: 2533 MB FreeBSD slice I tried to restore the MBR using fixmbr from Windows Recovery Console. It doesn't help. I claims it has overwritten the file, but I still get directly into FreeBSD at boot. I've tried setting ad0s2 and ad0s4 as bootable and then writing changes (W) in FDISK partition editor in sysinstall. At the following choice of MBR, I choose 'Install the FreeBSD Boot Manager'. I then get ERROR: Unable to write data to disk ad0! followed by Disk partition write returned an error status!. The same result also if I choose 'Standard' or 'None' in the MBR choice menu. (Another weird thing in sysinstall - fdisk: Positioning the cursor on any of the slices and hitting F1 yields Sorry! The slice file is not provided on this particular floppy image. This indicates to me that something is wrong with my installation, but what?) Any hints on ways out of this? Another question: In 5.2 there are two sysinstalls - /stand/sysinstall and /usr/local/sbin/sysinstall whereas in 4.8 I only find /stand/sysinstall. Which one should I use with 5.2 and what's the difference between them? -- Kjell ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Apparently GEOM prevents me from using sysinstall on the installation for changing MBR. I need to use the install CD and run sysinstall from there. Then I could do the change of MBR and got the standard FreeBSD boot manager. I now can boot Win XP or FreeBSD using the standard FreeBSD boot manager. What remains is to get rid of that and use Windows boot.ini for choosing between Win XP and FreeBSD, i.e. overwrite the MBR using fixmbr. -- Kjell ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Upgrade 4.8-RELEASE?
I was thinking of upgrading (binary) in order to correct the security issues (sendmail, openssh, realpath, etc.) that have been discovered since the 4.8-RELEASE. However, I fail to do so. I've searched the online documentation but not found what I need, except that I should run sysinstall-upgrade. I was a bit quick I think in just backing up and then running the upgrade, so I got to the same point I was before. Then I discovered that the Release Name under options could be used. So, I changed this to RELENG_4_8 and none of the servers could find that release. I tried 4.8-RELEASE-p4 (and -p5). Again, none of the servers had that release. This is what I cannot find in the documentation. What do you enter in the Release Name option? Then again, I might just wait for the 4.9 to come in a few weeks time, but would then face the same situation again I assume. I also browsed some of the ftp sites in order to find any hints on naming conventions, but failed... Any help would be much appreciated. I'd rather not upgrade from source. It did not install a .sh file in /usr/local/etc/rc.d. Was all set up for you Is still started with the sendmail_enable=yes variable in rc.conf or do I have to set sendmail_enable=NONE, and add something different to use postfix? Just after hitting YES above you shuld have seen the following: If you have postfix configured in your /etc/mail/mailer.conf (answered yes to the previous question) and would like to enable postfix to start at boot time, please set these variables in your /etc/rc.conf file: sendmail_enable=YES sendmail_flags=-bd sendmail_outbound_enable=NO sendmail_submit_enable=NO sendmail_msp_queue_enable=NO This will disable Sendmail completely. What other specific freebsd files do I have to or should I modify when using postfix (for example like make.conf)? Where can I find more info when using postfix on freebsd? Re: Looking for POSIX programming resources
I realize this isn't exactly on topic, but I figure a bunch of you guys/gals have probably done stuff like this, and might know where to point me. I am trying to write an automation program in FreeBSD that listens for commands on a serial port, and responds by issuing commands in response. I also need to accept commands and data from local users or shell scripts. Right now, I poll the serial ports periodically, and this seems to work OK. I would prefer to put the program to sleep until either a fixed amount of time has passed ( a timer interrupt ), or data arrives at one of the serial ports ( a device interrupt ). Unfortunately, I don't know how to do to this under FreeBSD. (All my C programming so far has been filters and such). Could someone point me to a resource on how to do this? Also, this program should run as a daemon, but I don't know how to make it disconnect from the tty (currently, I just run it using ). bkpupsd is a simple port that demonstrates this. How can I call programs, and read their output, from within my program? How can I read the system clock? A lot of events need to occur based on real-time (I presently use cron and shell scripts, but I would like to be able to calculate future times programmatically, and set my own alarms) long int unixtid; time(unixtid); Lastly, how can I get data and commands into and out of my program? I Also demonstrated by bkpupsd figure a file interface would be the simplest, and simply check the file periodically to see if it has changed. Is there an easier way, or is this an accepted method? I would eventually like to write a web page and use my existing web server and CGI scripts to control/monitor the daemon - but I'm not sure I'm ready to write my own web server code into this app. You will find that PHP scripts lends itself fine for this.. In summary, can anyone help me write code that: 1) puts my daemon to sleep, awaking only when either a timer has expired, data has arrived one of the controlled serial ports, or the user has invoked some interface from a script or command line utility. 2) Daemonizes my program (dissasociating itself from the terminal) 3) Accepts commands and/or data from scripts or command line utilities. 4) Call other programs, and pass them parameters. 5) Read the system clock. Re: need some sendmail help
PS: If you're about to ask ``Why isn't all this in the Handbook already?'' suffice it to say that I've been experimenting and reading about Sendmail a lot the past few weeks. I'm trying now to collect all the notes from the mess I have in my bedroom and sit my lazy *ss down to write a new Sendmail chapter for the Handbook. Thank you for your fine writeup! For some time I have been struggling to set up a network with the following configuration: 2x R4.7p4s and 1x W2k boxes on the local LAN and a R4.6 box as the gateway to the world on a ADSL line. A registered domain is pointing to my fixed IP address. All boxes can exchange mail on the LAN, send mail to the wide world and fetch mail using fetchmail. But mail to my registered domain seems to go to device zero. I am left with questions like what is the difference in sendmail configuration between the LAN PCs and the gateway PC? How can I check that my ISP has me set up properly for resolving reverse lookups? My MX records at zoneedit.com? Will my ISPs mail server cooperate? When you write the new Handbook chapter I hope you will keep the home user in mind and cover some of my points. And of course, if you should have any references that I should consult, I would appreciate any pointer! Doing a [root@syvert log]# tail maillog lists messages like Jan 24 08:19:24 syvert sendmail[4646]: h0M2327q001033: to=my- [EMAIL PROTECTED], ctladdr=[EMAIL PROTECTED] (0/0), delay=2+05:16:11, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=9840374, relay=mailfront.server.myisp.com., dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Operation timed out with mailfront.server.myisp.com. Apparently my isp's mail server rejects [EMAIL PROTECTED] since it does not resolve, while emails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] are accepted. How can I change the email address of my v4.7 server from [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ? During setup I have specified host names like sexy.la3sg.net syvert.la3sg.net nina.la3sg.net etc.. for the PCs on my LAN leaving them all in the domain la3sg.net Is there a better way to solve my problem than to change the email addresses on each of the PCs? regards from Kjell / LA3SG To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message

Re: Problem with the upgrade and now I need to rollback.. =/
Ok well I attempted the upgrade on a remote machine from 4.6 to 5.0 and it failed, miserably. Before it failed, it was throwing a message across the screen as to the location where it backed up the existing kernel. Does anyone, by chance, know the default location and filename for the kernel backup? For location of old kernel, see http://www.schlacter.net (towards the end) gl from Kjell Also, if anyone has a link on the rollback procedure on a FreeBSD kernel (4.6) that would be greatly appreciated also. My searches on FreeBSD.org and google haven't turned up much. Mostly mysql documents which I find a little hard to believe that mysql has that much higher ranking pages then the FreeBSD site. At any rate, please if you can, help... while I write 1,000 times on the chalkboard I will not attempt an upgrade on the server when I don't have it sitting in front of me. Similarly it should rewrite just the source (internal) address on outgoing packets. For a webserver behind a NAT gateway, the nat'ing process should be essentially invisible: the internal network appears to be directly connected to the internet. Re: VESA...getting 24bit depth on X
I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop. I can get X to work but only at 8bit depth. I want to get it to 16 or 24, and I was told that enabling VESA in the kernel would work. I enabled VESA in the kernel: options VESA I have put the following in the kernel conf file: options VESA options VGA_WIDTH90 options SC_PIXEL_MODE and recompiled it. But when I restarted I still had to same problem. I also added: allscreens_flags=-g 80x30 VESA_1024x768 in /etc/rc.conf When i issue the following vidcontrol -g 100x37 VESA_800x600 from the command line, my screen comes up as expected I really don't know what else to do. I recently had RedHat on it and it worked fine...and X works fine except for the resolution. All help is appreciated. Re: domain names, named, and all the problems that go with it.
I registered a domain name from godaddy.com. They say you must select two name servers to list on so I chose two of their park servers. I used their website to add myself to one of the root servers and it worked fine. I now want to run my own name server because I want to have several subdomains such as 'person.example.com' and 'person2.example.com'. I took myself out of the root nameserver with godaddy.com. I read the FreeBSD handbook about how to run a nameserver, and here is what I have done. my named.conf has this added to it. let's say my domain is example.com and my my ip is 65.24.x.x options { directory /etc/namedb; } zone example.com { type master; file example.com.db; }; and this is what I put in example.com.db example.com. IN SOA ns1.example.com. admin.example.com. ( 2002111005 ; Serial 30M ; Refresh 3600; Retry 604800 ; Expire 86400 ) ; Minimum TTL ; DNS Servers @ IN NS ns1.example.com. ; Machine Names localhost IN A127.0.0.1 ns1 IN A65.24.x.x @ IN A65.24.x.x ; Aliases person IN CNAME@ I want to run the nameserer and the http server from the same computer. Now when I type in http://example.com I get nothing. Does anybody have an idea about what I should do. Thanks for the help. Mike B [EMAIL PROTECTED] I left a pointer to my IP address in the nameservers at godaddy. Then I added the following at the end of my httpd.conf file: ### = ### The first VirtualHost section is used # for requests without a known server name. # = VirtualHost * ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED] DocumentRoot/home/www/htdocs ServerName syvert.la3sg.net ErrorLog/var/log/httpd-error.log CustomLog /var/log/httpd-acc.log.syvert combined /VirtualHost MIDTSETER.COM ### VirtualHost * ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED] DocumentRoot/home/www/htdocs/my.com ServerName my.com ErrorLog/var/log/httpd-error.log CustomLog /var/log/httpd-acc.log combined /VirtualHost VirtualHost * ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED] DocumentRoot/home/www/htdocs/my.com ServerName www.my.com ErrorLog/var/log/httpd-error.log CustomLog /var/log/httpd-acc.log combined /VirtualHost VirtualHost * ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED] DocumentRoot/home/syvert/samba ServerName programs.my.com ErrorLog/var/log/httpd-error.log CustomLog /var/log/httpd-acc.log combined /VirtualHost VirtualHost * ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED] DocumentRoot/music ServerName music.my.com ErrorLog/var/log/httpd-error.log CustomLog /var/log/httpd-acc.log combined /VirtualHost This way I can add as many subdomains as I wish. Re: 4.7 REL Install problem Write failure on transfer!
I'm trying to install 4.7-Release from CDROM. BootMgr is installed and works to boot Win98. The FreeBSD partition seems to get formated ok. But when the /bin files are copied: Write failure on transfer! When I boot from floppies and use the 4.7 CD for sysgen I get a similar message. I can not boot from my CD either. There have been several posts from others with similar difficulties with 4.7 lately. I have been downloading and burning CDs since r4.1 with no difficulties. The only way I can get 4.7 is to start with my 4.6.2 CD and then cvsup up to 4.7 ... Should I replace my disk drive with a frog? Probably won't help. In my case I suspect that my CD burner or the media I am using must be the culprits. I have downloaded the 4.7 ISOs from three different mirrors, burned 4 CDs using two different burning programs. No luck. Regards from Kjell/LA3SG To Unsubscribe: send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe freebsd-questions in the body of the message

We've setup a FreeBSD web server without ipfw running, and I don't really see any reason to run ipfw since the only services I have running are httpd and sshd. We have also attempted to secure the machine in the other typical ways. As others have said, you dont really need to, but it is a good idea, and does add an extra layer of protection. One example of this would be, if you web server is compromised, and the user gets access as 'httpd' but not as root. Having a firewall will prevent them malicious activity, such as using your machine to launch a DOS attack against another machine, and prevent them running a daemon that allows them to connect to your machine on another port. So you dont need a firewall, but it does make your machine alot more safe if you do. The other option, is you can set the kernel secure level so that users cannot modify the kernel or the firewall rules to get around your security, without having local access to the machine. I appreciate all the input! I think I will be putting up ipfw afterall! I see now that the benefits far outweigh the small amount of time it takes to setup ipfw. I imagine there wouldn't be any noticeable effects to performance either. If nobody helps here, then you can usually ask on about 4.x on freebsd-stable without getting complaints (say you asked here first). But in this case it's highly likely that the problem's at your end. After composing the above, I downloaded the mini 4.7 iso, burnt a disk, and once again the boot process stops at text=0x2833b1 ! If it is any comfort, I do have problems with the 4.7 ISOs also. I have downloaded and burned ISOs from 4.2 through 4.6.2 with no problems. I have downloaded 3 copies of 4.7 from different sites, and my Nero CD burning program gives the same error message on all 3. The resulting CDs are not bootable, and the kernel can not be read when the CDs are used as data disks. As a check I downloaded another copy of 4.6.2, and the resulting CD was perfect. WinTV card not recognized on AOpen AX-34pro card

Using the VGA and Ethernet card from the Abit box makes no difference. Using the FXTV utility under KDE on the Abit box, it is possible to select modes. When selecting NTSC I get the same distorted picture as on the AOpen box, but selecting PAL/N or PAL/BGDHI produces good pictures. So why does the AOpen board insist that my TV card is a NTSC card?
