Follow-up Comment #5, patch #4879 (project freeciv): I thought it was a feature that has been in SDL_ttf for a very long time. Since 2.0.10 in 2010; added here http://hg.libsdl.org/SDL_ttf/rev/0f803b00e43b. Looks like the package in Debian was rotting for some years.
