[Audyssey] Question about winboard

2008-12-14 Thread dark
Hi.

Sinse I can't obviously test this one lacking Jaws, I'm going to have to ask.

Does the winboard program actually have a computer opponent to play chess
against? or does it only explain the moves to you and allow you to play against
another human opponent as the accessible chess tutor does.

Depending upon which it does, will defign which catagory it goes in on the
database (we've been trying to really sort out the game genres recently).

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

purchase them. I use some of the Real Speak voices for Window Eyes, although

Hi Ari,

Weird, I no longer see any of the Neo Speech voices on the Next Up site.

Neo Speech Kate and Paul did seem to be less responsive for me. They are
a much smaller install than the ATT voices and they seem to take longer
to respond when given speech to say. After awhile they do seem to stay in
memory and the response time gets a bit better.

I also see on the Next Up site that the Nuance RealSpeakl™ Voices and
Acapela Voices say Note: These voices are sold only as part of TextAloud.
So does that mean that they will not work with my games and other sapi5

Re: [Audyssey] Gamebooks was: Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-14 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
That is very interesting. i'll have to check that out. Yeah, gamebooks
can be very fun to play now and then.

dark wrote:

Hi Tom.

I must admit I'm getting to be a bit of a gamebook nut.

You have the story and plot elements of interactive fiction,
often with puzles, but a sympler interface, and factors such as
character stats which can be used to resolve combat, or reward the
player.

Gamebooks of course alter a lot in quality, but generally they're
deffinately fun.

On the same subject, I've actually just come across some other pdf
gamebooks from the 80s, published in various game book related magazines.

i initially thought that like many old gamebooks on sites like home of
the underdogs, these where streight image scans, but it turns out
they actually have text, which means they can be converted and played.

Hurrah!

I'm not sure of the quality, but there's one way to find out, go to

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-14 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Well, speaking from experience here creating an entire world from
scratch is turning out to be very hard work indeed. You litterally have
to create the worlds religion, myths, legends, history, as well as the
world itself from scratch. I think that is why some RPG games just go
for the roll based combat and lacks depth in the back story. Either that
or someone bases an RPG on a known universe like Star Wars.
For example, in between work on MOTA I have started jotting down notes
for the RPG game. One thing I noticed is all the things I don't know
about my new world. Its history, different realms, heroes, villens,
religion, etc. It might take me months to write up a basic draft of the
world before I can even write a simple text adventure. If I wanted to be
lazy about it I could save myself loads of time by using an existing
world, but then that might ruin the fun of creating something totally new.

Smile.

dark wrote:

Hi Tom.

The situation of the Syth rpg you mention sounds disturbingly
familiar. Long before I found audiogames, i was trying out literally
thousands of those sorts of games, and Sryth is the only one I found
to actually feature backstory, quests and a true world to explore.

there are a couple of games which are mechanically nice in terms of
their explorable areas such as Kingdom of Loathing, but while an
incredibly fun litle game, it's not something I can take too seriously
as a coherent world and story, which is probably why I've never really
had the patience to actually work a character through the game.

I would however absolutely, totally and completely recommend the
chronicles of Arborell.

Fantastic writing, huge gamebooks, and really amazing background
material.

the world is incredibly unique with it's own races and history, and
there really is so much of the story which needs to be pieced together.

Also, there are main characters with backstory in the main gamebook
series.

The gm is also great about accessibility issues (he's even got a forum
for Vi accessibility).

I've always thought he sounded like a no-nonsense British newscaster. I
occasionally use him and the other Scansoft voies I have for Window-Eyes but
like you I find the response time too slow for my typing speed. That
basically leaes me with Dectalk or Eloquence most of the time, which I don't
particularly care for, or even, shudder, the Microsoft voices. They work
fine for games at least, so I can at least be free of Microsoft Sam. Now if
i had a web site I could put up the file I made of Microsoft Sam getting
depressed about no one using him and committing suicide.

Re: [Audyssey] Jim's Monopoly question

2008-12-14 Thread dark

Hmmm Jim.

the Ai programming does make sense, though I do admit I would sometimes like
multiple monopoly opponents to play against.

The master option didn't actually occur to me, though certainly on the
occasions i've played winlife or monopoly myself with friends we've only had
the one person typing, and I can see that method working in live chat or
skype calls.

On the other hand though, it might be a personal thing, but I do like to
physically look around the board and see what is or is not free, check how
much catch I've got as opposed to my opponent etc. Pluss, for play by E-mail
or forum mail monopoly, i couldn't really imagine using a master and several
others.

I ttherefore put the dice rolling thing to you as a suggestion, perhaps
combined with the ability to have a text file of the board setup either
saved or spoken, which players could pass around if necessary.

If this would be a pest to do or nobody thinks it's a good idea, fair
enough.

Re: [Audyssey] game recommendations.

2008-12-14 Thread The Kolesar Brothers
Jim, you are more than welcome. It is we the gamers who should be thanking
you for writing all of the hand to ear games and writing them for free for
we to enjoy. So it is we who should be thanking you.
I call them as i see them. My brother and I will try pretty much anything
that comes down the pike. Then we'll offer our opinion on if it is blind
friendly or not.If we feel that it is something that we and our blind frined
can and would be interested in playing? Then we'll say way and recommend it
to all we know to test it out for themselves. If it is not blind friendly?
Then we'll say why and hopefully from a blind person's point of view will
recommend what they might think about doing to make it enjoyable for blind
players.
This is the duty of a true gamer with a disability. Because how is the off
the shelf gaming company going to know our needs if we don't explain our
needs and show them the proffits that they're missing out from our business
on their product?
So thanks once again Jim For your emagination behind your game. For taking
the time out to write your games. Also for the price is right for most of
the disabled gamers out there who might not be able to afford some of the
more expensive games.
So thanks once again.
Ron and leader dog boz who asks the question, why do those silly human only
have two paws instead of having four paws like we dogs when it comes to
playing the games?

Hi Ari,

The thing is, the artificial intelligence for multiple computer players is
beyond my artificial intelligence programming ability. Truthfully it was a
real strain on my brain just to have one computer player. Now to have more

[Audyssey] the gamebooks of Arborell

2008-12-14 Thread Ken
The Arborell gamebooks have been brought to my attention through the gamers'
list, so I went to the website and checked the game out, never having played a
gamebook before. I downloaded it, (two zip files,) put them on my Pac Mate
and, upon discovering it needed stats sheets and combat resolution sheets and
dice, I starting an Excel spreadsheet. It keeps track of everything and rolls
two dice whenever any variable is changed. For example, in the first phase, it
adds the points from your strength, agility and so on, and shows the total
underneath the last attribute. (You can't go over 50.) It calculates your
combat value as well. It will also have a complete list of all equipment you
can buy with the second set of 50 points, the cost of each, with running points
total under that. You'll just erase the variables of any unwanted items. It
still needs a bit of work, and I'm sure someone with more Excel experience
could do a lot better than I, but if anyone wants the file I'll send it to
Arborell's development team, and perhaps someone else could host it as well in
the meantime. I haven't looked at the maps yet but perhaps there's a way to
write one for the PM or a Braille embosser, much like the maps in NetHack for
the PM--dashes for horizontal walls, dot 4-5-6 for vertical ones, and so on.
As for the game itself, it's totally usable on the PM. In my usual addicts'
style, I spent an entire game playing it--about three hours on the Excel
programming. It's a great game--as I told my daughter, it's a choose-your-own
adventure for grown-ups, and as I told my brother, it's a dd game when you're
by yourself.

Re: [Audyssey] the gamebooks of Arborell

2008-12-14 Thread dark
As you've probably gathered ken, the chronicles of Arborell is sort of one
of my personal favourite things, ever!

I won't go on about how good it is though.

I'm not really sure how Xl works, but that file sounds incredibly handy,
especially as there are other gamebooks etc using the same system. Wain
dencely the gamemaster would deffinately be interested I think, but i
actually suggest joining and posting up the file in the ARborell forum at
http://www.arborellium.freeforums.org/ There's a specific forum on there for
Vi accessibility.

Sinse a completely randomized adventure is in the works for Arborell, your
file will be useful I think.

As far as maps go, the maps aren't nethack style at all. One point of a
gamebook is the getting lost and the need to create your own maps if you
want them.

The maps are actually full maps of the surrounding area, with mountains,
roades, woods etc marked. The Arborell Gamemaster has been kind enough to do
a text described version, with objects mentioned and detailed directions on
where various things go (just check in the windhammer section).

Really glad you like these.

Btw,Though imho Chronicles of Arborell is one of, --- if not possibly the
finest thing of it's type on the net, several others do exist, which can be
incredibly fun as well.

I sent an E-mail around a while ago with some links, or you can search
through the audiogames.net database under the gamebooks genre catagory.

Hth, and please let me know how the xl thing works(I've had xl for years,
I've just no idea how to use it), I've always just written everything down
in a bog standard text editer and used Gma dice for my rolling.

all the best,

Dark.

Yes, a link to the actual mirror page with written descriptions would also

Hi Dark,
I am indeed still hosting them on the USA Games web site. Sorry I have not
yet put up a page for the files, but the files, at least most of them are
now up on the server. To visit the PB Games download directory go to

http://www.usagames.us/downloads/games/pb-games/
and you will find most of the PB Games in that directory.
We are still in the process of getting the USA Games web site set up on
the new server but once the domain finishes propagating I'll upload the
rest of the PB Games to that directory like 3D Snake, Tick Tack Toe, and
Snowball Wars. I'll also add a web page to the USA Games mirror pages site
so people have an actual web page with links and descriptions of the games
for you.
If you would like as soon as the sight is up, and I have added the pb
games mirror page I'll e-mail you the link off list so you can go ahead
and link to the php script that directs you to the PB Games mirror?

Cheers.

Hi.

Sinse I can't obviously test this one lacking Jaws, I'm going to have to
ask.

Does the winboard program actually have a computer opponent to play chess
against? or does it only explain the moves to you and allow you to play
against another human opponent as the accessible chess tutor does.

Depending upon which it does, will defign which catagory it goes in on the
database (we've been trying to really sort out the game genres recently).

No, no special software required, just the ability to read text files or
internet pages, and some rollable dice (the gma dice program helps.

As to where to get the books, well various places.

many of them are listed on audiogames.net under gamebooks, see
http://audiogames.net/search.php?

From that list I'd personally highly recommend the Fighting fantasy project
(easy to handle as the website will roll dice for you), and particularly the
Chronicles of Arborell, which imho has some of the best writing of a
