Re: [Audyssey] fighting fantasy gamebook

2009-03-04 Thread dark

Hi.

Firstly, yes, Ffproject do do new books, it's just that they don't come out
every day.

The last one was footsteps of a hero released at Christmas.

As to Age of fable, well it's been through a lot of expantions. Apparently
an ending will be added soon when you've completed all the quests, oh,
and now there are many more areas to go to than just a city.

As I've said before Chronicles of arborell is probably my favourite gamebook
related site ever! the background, writing style, everything is perfect.

I personally don't mind using the dice program at all, and that goes
for all the project.aon books as well.

There are actually some really nice gamebooks around it's just that not many
have their own dice programs, and some don't even use html they just give
you a document and you have to use the find command to read through the
sections.

For the htmlified ones, check out the gamebooks catagory on
audiogames.net, there's a couple of smaller gamebooks I discovered
which have their own pages on there.

Yeah, only problem is they really aren't making any new gamebooks for
that site I don't think. If only the cronicals of Arberelle had a dice
manager, it'd be great. I mean I don't know. With the GMA dice program I
don't feel like I'm playing a game. With FFProject, I do. Age of Fabel is
also great, even though I'm not sure what to do, there doesn't seem to be
a set path. I explore the city for some time but than I really don't know
how to gain any progress.

Re: [Audyssey] fighting fantasy gamebook

2009-03-04 Thread dark

One thing about age of fable is the more you play, the better you get.

I've got a saved game now with a character who started out with 10-15 in all
stats accept roguery, with extra points in streetwise, heroism and healing.

After finishing all game quests with her (particularly visiting the desert
temple with the many shells), I've got all her stats up to 18 pluss,
accept roguery.

As I said, I disagree about requiring a program for stat management,
afterall, back in the 80's when gamebooks were most popular, people just
used dice and paper.

I have in fact got a friend who collects old gamebooks, and have played
through a couple with him using the Gma dice program and a word document to
keep stats.

While I agree it's less convenient, imho it's worth it, - especially for
gamebooks like project.aon and the chronicles of arborell.

Just my thoughts.

Hello,

Entombed is the game I'm currently programming. The effectiveness of armor
is intimately tied to the material's hardness. So all cloth-type armor
provides the least protection, then leather types, finally, the metals.
The

metals use their real-life values, so you can use these as a guide. Copper
is harder than bronze (but harder to work with), Iron is harder than
copper.

What armor you can wear is dependent on what job you chose at character
creation.

Fighters can wear all metal armor. Thieves can wear leather. The others

wear cloth-types.

Hope that helps!

Hi.

When you start entombed, the only race you can choose is human.

Later on though you'll unlock another race to play. Apparently more races
will be in the next version.

Oh btw, also note that your job has a lot to do with your character as well,
so even though your stuck with just choosing human at the start, you've stil
got a lot of choice of style in playing as a fighter, mage or whatever.

bronze breastplate?
What is the level of progressive armor types? For example, what is wool,
compared to linen, cloth, felt copper and bronze, and I think rabbit, deer,
wolf, dire wolf, caveman leathers etc and so forth?

Re: [Audyssey] entomb question

2009-03-04 Thread Allan Thompson

Hi Jason,
It is a great game, thanks for making it.
I am afraid I still am having a hard time trying to figure out which is
better then others. The heirarchy of cloth to metal is easy enough, my
problem is the description terms that are used, as well as the heirarchy of
armors within their class. For instance the metal armors, my instinct made
the weak to strong line up as copper, bronze and then iron. You said that
Bronze comes before copper(describing it's hardness) making the line up
bronze, copper, then iron.
In leather armors, the natural progression seems to be rabbit, deer, wolf,
dire wolf and then caveman, however, I don't really know if caveman types
are worse or better then wolf types. The same with the cloth types. I have
no idea if cloth is worse or better then linen, felt, cloth or whatever.
The real problem is that with words, it is impossible to make it obvious for
everyone because we all have diffrent idea's about what a material might be
like.
A number representing the defensive ability of the item attached to each
armor would clear everything up immediatly. All one would have to do is
compare the defensive number of the armor. I suppose the same could be said
of weapons as well.

Anyway, that was just my opinion.
Thanks in advance for the help,

The others
can

wear cloth-types.

Hope that helps!

Thanks!

Re: [Audyssey] [Spam] entomb question

2009-03-04 Thread Allan Thompson

Hi Dark,
I just read Jason's email about the heirarchy of metal armor and he said
that it was bronze, copper then iron.
An analyze spell would be very cool, but a character with the fighter job
perhaps could judge value of weapons and armor as well, or perhaps a dwarf
or blacksmith like race/class might have an innate ability to tell the exact
numeric value of some materials, like maybe stone or metals for dwarves,
wood types for an elf or druid or ranger type job/race, things of that
nature. I am only guessing about all that, I have only found two cards
playing the game.

[Audyssey] more entombed things

2009-03-04 Thread Allan Thompson
Hello again,

I had a few more questions and such.
by the way, I was playingthe game and I had accidentally hit the grov key (it
is directly under the escape key) and when I pressed it, my character managed
to cut his hand off.
Also, what does the zombie rot potions do? I have drank them, made members of
my party drink them, and I have thrown them at enemies, but they don't appear
to do anything.
Do the playable characters have a primary and secondary hand, or does it matter
which hand you put which weapon?
Is there a command to tell how much magic points a magic using character has
left?
Are the corpses left after a battle useful for anything?

thanks,

Age of fable is an online gamebook style adventure which roles all it's own
stats.

The Chronicles of Arborell is an attempt by someone to do online something
similar to what Tokeen did, create an entire world with it's unique history,
races and magic.

thus far there are several gamebooks, as well as quite a lot of background
material to read. You do need to use the gma dice program, but as I said,
it's imho well worth it for the quality of the writing and the games.

Oh, and there's a special new random dungeon gamebook in developement as
well.

You can find the chronicles at

Oh Btw, I've been updating audiogames.net with entries for online gamebooks

Re: [Audyssey] [Spam] entomb question

2009-03-04 Thread Jason Allen
The footstep sounds. A step on stone is a correct movement. A sandy sound
means you brushed up against a wall and can't go any more in that direction.
There is no penalty for walking into a wall. Some audio games I played would
blast this shrieking noise whenever you bumped into a wall. I thought that
was ridiculous, so I tried to make it as inoffensive as possible.

The stairways are announced when you enter a room with one. They currently
don't have any audible sound outside that.

I'll see about making the weapons and armor easier to distinquish. Copper is
in-fact harder than bronze, but it depends on the alloy. I just took the
average hardness for bronze. Making bronze weapons had advantages over
copper because adding tin (or lead, or arsenic) lowered the melting
temperature of the alloy. This isn't modeled in Entombed, so for now at
least, copper is the better metal when compared to bronze. I might make
copper edges duller in some future update to simulate some advantages bronze
had over copper weapons.

Glad you're enjoying it! It's in heavy development right now and probably
will be for some time.

Regarding character creation. I planned to allow you to save character
builds to select easily the next time you play. This will probably be
removed or added much later though. I'm prioritizing gameplay elements right

[Audyssey] a very! long! shot!

2009-03-04 Thread Charles Rivard
Sorry for this being a somewhat lengthy post, but I'm hoping that my
description of this unit will help in getting the assistance I'm looking for.
Here goes:

I just got a game controller, and haven't a clue as to how to use the darned
thing. It is manufactured by Phillips. I bought it at Wal-Mart for roughly
$16. It came with a mini CD, which I figure is software? Should this software
be installed first, or should the game controller be installed first. There
don't seem to be any instructions in the packaging. Here's what the unit looks
like:

There is a handle at each side that is facing me if the unit is sitting on the
table. Inward from these, there are 2 knobs that feel sort of felt covered.
To the left of the leftmost one, there is a cross, any of the four lengths can
be depressed. Between the 2 knobs are 4 buttons in a diamond pattern, with the
button on the right center pointing to the right and the other 3 buttons being
sort of oblong shaped, but they are not toggles. Above this diamond pattern
are 2 small round buttons, with sort of a bubble, possibly a small screen
between them. To the right of the right-hand knob is another diamond pattern
of 4 buttons which are larger than those near the left knob. These are round
in shape. Now, along the forward edge of the unit, in front of the handles I
mentioned at the top of this paragraph, there are 4 buttons, probably 2 for
each of the joysticks. Also on this forward edge is a switch that is not a
toggle. It can be pulled to the left as you hold the unit in your hands. This
switch will spring back to the right if you release it. The unit did not come
with a USB cable, but I think I have one around here somewhere.

I want to start using this little beast on games for the blind that can be
operated by it, so any thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

[Audyssey] Ocean Sky VIP Pocket Golf

2009-03-04 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Folks,
I read about this golf game for cell phones on Fred's Head:

Ocean Sky VIP Pocket Golf
http://www.oceansky.us/shopgolf.php
VIP Pocket Golf is a game designed for the Windows Mobile platform, with
visually impaired users in mind! Play 18 wholes of golf, on any of four
difficulty levels, trying to set a high score and earn money towards
becoming a true VIP Golf Pro!

This program has been tested with the Mobile Speak software, and runs
smoothly in conjunction with the TTS engine. Even sighted people can play
Pocket Golf, thanks to the few visual elements that have been incorporated
into the software. For the visually impaired, a TTS will be able to speak
the status, progress, menus and prompts in the game.

 How the game works:

The game uses various sounds to guide the user during gameplay. Most
notably, a rising tone is used to indicate the power of the swing which
helps the user gauge how far they'd like the ball to travel.
For example, for maximum power/distance, the user will wait until the rising
tone reaches its highest pitch to click the swing key to launch the ball
to the max distance possible with the selected club.

Edit boxes are used to display relevant information to the user. The user
will use the Tab key on the device to navigate these edit boxes.

 Examples:

Box 1 shows your current score.
Box 2 shows the title of the club in use.
Box 3 shows the max distance possible with the selected club.
Box 4 shows The predicted par for the current whole.
Box 5 shows the number of the whole you are playing (E.G: whole #4 out of
18).

Box 6 shows the distance remaining towards the green.
Box 7 shows the number of swings you've taken.
(The Tab key will cycle through these boxes in order from 1-7.)

 Game Features:

You can create user profiles, so multiple people can play on the same
device!

You can save a game and reload them! So, you can pickup where you left off.
Four difficulty levels are available, including: Easy, Medium, Hard, and
Expert. (Medium is the default setting.)
Money will be earned with a par or better on each whole. This money can be
used in the Pro Shop, to upgrade clubs, golf balls, and other surprise items
for improved play.
You will encounter various traps during gameplay. Water and sand traps are
used to stump the user along the way. Users will likely remember where these
traps are located, so they can learn to avoid them in the future. However,
always be ware of the squirrels who live on the golf course.
Initially, two courses are offered with the game. However, a separate add-on
will allow users to create personalized courses; complete with custom
titles, distance and trap details. They will be able to share these with
other VIP Pocket Golf players!

Re: [Audyssey] more entombed things

2009-03-04 Thread Jason Allen
Hi,

The key below escape is a key I use for testing. I sometimes forget to
disable it. It's not used for anything in normal game play.

Zombie Rot potions cure zombie rot. Zombie rot used to be a serious plague
in earlier versions of Entombed, but it doesn't show up much (or at all) in
the new version. It will certainly have another outbreak in the future.
Being afflicted with Zombie Rot is a serious condition that should be
treated immediately.

Your character has no hand preference. They tend to hold things in their
left hand because it's the first choice when wielding weapons.

No magic points command yet, but I'll fix that in the future. You start with
100. Every spell currently costs 10. You can replenish them by resting.

I plead the 5th on corpses and body parts. They may or may not be useful.

Also, what does the zombie rot potions do? I have drank them, made members

 appear to do anything.
Do the playable characters have a primary and secondary hand, or does it
matter which hand you put which weapon?
Is there a command to tell how much magic points a magic using character

Are the corpses left after a battle useful for anything?

 Hi. Tom.

Intreaguing indeed. I certainly take the point about adding captioning for

sounds in games being comparatively symple, but I believe the problem here

is that this isn't often done, and as games get more inclined to use full
animated cutscenes or spoken dialogue people with hereing imparements are
 having more problems.

Perception of disability and what harm it precisely does is actually part
of my phd thesis, sinse i'm attempting to formulate a new deffinition and
approach for looking at disability which can be then used in solving
 certain problems.

One odd thing though, is that blindness is rarely referenced in the
academic literature on disability itself. There's a lot said about
deafness, and quite a bit about paraplegia, but comparatively litle on
blindness, and I do admit this contributes to my belief about game access
issues for those disabilities being more obviously addressed by devs.

Also, there is the question of what games are looked at. I'd guess
interactive fiction games for example would be near impossible for someone

who couldn't quickly use the keyboard, and while they could play many
online games, and indeed some like the flash ones which are not Vi
accessible, they'd have issues every time they were required to fill in a
 text field.

while I know there are solutions to this sort of problem, how efficient
they might be, and how much effort they take to work could be another
 matter.

 Beware the Grue!

 Dark.

[Audyssey] Windows/Linux Interactive Fiction Interpretors

2009-03-04 Thread Draconis Entertainment

Hey all,

What interactive fiction interpretors are you WIndows and Linux users

with Orca. With Windows, something that just works well. Something
that works well with ZMachine games and their derived formats, like

The Mac has a spectacular interpretor, but I've been so far out of the

and Linux stand these days.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.

That being said, I do like good old Frotz for the Z-machine, and Glulxe

wonderfully for Tads 2 an 3 games.
I am using Speakup at the console, if this helps.
