[Audyssey] Vip mud sapi problem

2009-05-26 Thread dark
Hi.

I was wondering if someone could please help with this, I've asked everywhere
else, including on the vip mud list and with a direct E-mail to david
greenwood, but haven't got any replies as yet.

Using sapi in materia magica everything is okay accept for one thing. When
reading the screen with up and down arrows, Sapi refuses to read the status
line showing hp, mp and st (staminer).

You can read it with left and right arrows, - and the line is deffinately
there sinse I've checked it using Hal, it's just that when reading in coming
text, the line doesn't get read - which keeps getting me killed in battles
sinse I don't know how damaged I'm getting.

It does get read in safe areas where the word "safe" appears at the start,
which makes me think it's something to do with the line being surrounded with a
less than and greater than sign.

Any advice would be much appreciated sinse this is rather frustrating.

For a direct comparison here's a cut and paste of the line, - though
obviously the values vary (I used Hal).

<97hp 94sp 164st>

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

[Audyssey] Draconis Entertainment News

2009-05-26 Thread Draconis Entertainment

Greetings gamers,

This note is a quick sneak peek at a few items that will be announced
officially on the Draconis web site soon.

While news has been slow in coming, we're still working hard to
deliver new games for both Mac and Windows. We're sorry it is taking
so long.

We've not been idle here. In addition to the future titles, Draconis
has decided to change things just a little bit. Here are some
particular items of note.

1. We don't want to do a development blog, like many have suggested.
For one thing, it reveals too much of what we're working on, something
that we have a longstanding policy of not doing. But we do understand
how nice it would be for gamers to know how things are progressing.
To that end, we've decided that we will keep gamers informed on the
day-to-day happenings at Draconis to some extent. Don't expect the top
secret details, but do expect to have a better idea of what is being
worked on. Draconis has opened a Twitter profile and account that
gamers can follow to find out a little about what's happening behind
the scenes at Draconis. Follow us, and see our Twitter page at http://twitter.com/DracoEnt

2. We are currently building an automated key generation system. This
means that, when you purchase our games, you will receive your
registration for the game immediately. No more human processing will
be required. The new system will be employed for all existing and
future titles. This will dramatically change how we do things, as
we'll be able to spend far more time on development, and less time on
processing orders.

3. We've expanded our offerings to include music. We're proud to bring
you a new band called Stage 19. Consisting of two blind musicians,
Molly McClenahan and Josh de Lioncourt, Stage 19 is celebrating its
first release. It's an EP entitled "Opening Act", and is available on
iTunes, Amazon MP3, and other digital music shops under the Draconis
Entertainment label. Incidentally, one of the tracks on the EP is the
instrumental piece that serves as part of the Draconis audio logo. The
band site is http://stage19music.com

4. We have two developers working on the new titles. Silver Dollar is
nearing completion and will be a free offering for both Mac and
Windows users.

Thanks for your continued support. The best years are still ahead of
us. In the end, it'll be worth the wait. Thanks for sticking with us.

[Audyssey] play all audio games with a joystick

2009-05-26 Thread Josh
Hi,

Ok for those of you wholike joysticks, and if you want to play Jim's games like
football with a joystick I think I have found an answer. this program is called
JoyToKey. it is free. It lets you emulate full keyboard and mouse emulation by
useing a joystick. I guess it will work with most any type of game controller
Joystick. try it out. I did not see a purchase link and this is the original
page of the software the website said it is free.

[Audyssey] Logitech Attack 3 Joystick

2009-05-26 Thread Josh
Hi,

Will the Logitech Attack 3 Joystick work with Jim's games and other games? I
also heard of programs that will allow a joystick to simulate keys on a
keyboard, such as a program called joyKey. anyone had any experience with this?
Still think it would be fun to play Jim's baseball football and golf games with
joystick if you wanted to.

Hi Josh,

Truthfully I do not see me adding joystick support to those games. About
the only thing that one could do with a joystick in those games is go
through the menus since that is allot of what you do in the game. And the
arrow keys work just as well if not better for that than a joystick does.
Pretty much the same thing for the one time that you need to hit a key to
swing the bat or the power of your swing in golf.

2009-05-26 Thread Josh
Hi,
no problem Jim. Maybe we could post our scores to the list or privately to each

So will your game work with the logitech attack3 joystick? or is it only for
one specific joystick. I was gunna buy a joystick. but if I need different
joysticks for different audio games then I might aswell not bother.

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1 tts

Hi Dark,

Yep, I wrote Mach 1 tts for use with my Logitech MOMO Racing steering wheel and
then tried to add keyboard support. Some of the turns are very sharp so I
needed to give the keyboard the ability to turn sharp so sometimes it turns
sharper than you need to, but as I said, I am not going to dumb the game down
so that it is not as much fun for me to drive with my steering wheel.

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1 tts

2009-05-26 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your suggestions.

Ok, I will turn the volume of the tire squeal back up when you shift, but I
didn't like it louder. Plus you hear it announce the gear and the engine RPM
change. And I never found a good gear click sound that worked.

Same problem with the brake sound. It is just very hard to find a tire squeal
sound that sounds ok when it is played looping over and over. And if you don't
use a little brake sound and loop it, you have no idea how long the file needs
to be for any and all braking circumstances. But I will try to get a better
one in there.

You can adjust the volume of the sapi5 speech if it is too loud for you. And
of course the different voices themselves are of different volumes.

I started the engine sound out loud so that we could play with it, revving it
up and making some noise. But I definitely don't want it so loud that I can
not hear the rest of the sounds that I am using to know where I am at on the
track during the race. You know the crowd and music or other sounds that
indicate how close you are to the wall or how far along you are in the
straightaway or turn.

Hi Josh,

I have a Saitek ST290 Pro joystick. I like it very much for Puppy 1 and Pong.
It works for games like Mach 1 tts and Top Speed as well, but is a bit strange
driving a car with a single stick joystick rather than a steering wheel. I
have also tried it with other blind accessible games with joystick support and
it worked with all of them.

It just plugs into the USB port. It needs no batteries or anything.

Now the Logitech MOMO Racing steering wheel not only plugs into the USB port,
but also needs to plug into a power supply. (wall outlet)

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1

TTS sounds
Hi Charles,

As I said though, I want to have the audio feedback that a sighted driver would
have. That is by listening to the sound get louder and louder as you near the
end of that section of the track, it gives you a reference so that you can get
ready for the next section just like the sighted driver does by looking for a
reference point on the track. Or like in the turn, you can start letting off
of the steering wheel because you are nearing the end of the turn. That gives
one a better time because the sharper you turn the more speed it scruffs off.

I will add the option to have either the current crowd sound get louder the
closer that you get to the wall or the old wall echo sound get louder as you
get closer to the wall. It is the same thing, just a different sound file.

Hi Josh,

Yes, I definitely remember the Mach 1 racing league that we had going for
years. The thing is, I had nothing to do with it other than being just one of
the participants. It was Hugo Janssens that organized it all and did all of
the work of setting the race track, laps, difficulty and then compiling the
results etc etc.

Personally I would rather be working on a new version of a game or a whole new

[Audyssey] Interactive Fiction Interpreters

2009-05-26 Thread kelby carlson

Hey List,

Can anyone give me tips on interactive fiction interpreters? I'm
using HTML TADS, and I need to know if there's anything I should
do to set it up. Is there a way to make JAWS not read the clock
of the interpreter, as this is very distracting? Does anyone have
any tips on using Windows interpreters generally?

Maybe if I ever saw how they did a one on one basketball game for the ps2,

[Audyssey] talking about flight contorlers.

2009-05-26 Thread The Kolesar Brothers
It would be nice to see which brands of gamepads work with the hand to ear
games. Or which gamepads work with the largest majority of the hand to ear
games.
I wish to untie myself from the keyboard as well.
I've gone through two gamepads thus far. A logic tech which rand around $100
which I was able to get my money back and the Philips retractable 2909.
I'm working with the philips retractable 2909 gamepad.
The gamepad is a duel stick gamepad.
So far I see that it works with Jim Kitchen's puppy one.
I am working level by level testing out hunter from BSC Games with the
gamepad. So far with some practice I've gotten as far as valley of the
tigers with it.
With the game troopanum I've gotten about level nine or ten with it.
I'm having problems landing the ship with the gamepad.
So far I've been able to play the side scroller level with blast chamber.
But having problems finding the correct pipe and shutting it off in time.
Having some problems with the gamepad with Three D Velocity. Not sure if
that is pilot error or game error at this time.
So once again, it would be nice to see which game pad or game pads work with
the majority of the hand to ear games to make them more realistic and more
enjoyable to play
I say majority of the games. The reason why I say this is that you don't
want to pick up a game pad and have it only work with one game. If you had a
game pad and or a flight yoke that would handle say for example Puppy one,
mach 1, aliens in the outback, lone wolf, tank commander, and the star trek
game. Then have that same pad work with Troopanum, hunter and blast chamber
and Three D velocity as well. This would be great. You would have one pad
that would work with the majority of the h to e game that are out there on
the market for we gamers to enjoy.
So that is my two cents of this topic.

that will fire at you and make you lose the game.

[Audyssey] hockey game

Hi jim,

Also I think a hockey game one against one would be good also. After all, in
playstation games such as nhl you only have one game controller so you can only
control one player at a time, right? and to make it more fun you could make
your player be a team like the Philadelphia flyers, and the opponent team be a
random nhl team. and there could be the air-horn sounds and crowd sounds and
the puck and ice-skates sounds like in a real hocky game.

[Audyssey] Mach 1, TTS sounds

2009-05-26 Thread Charles Rivard
Maybe it's a personal opinion, but I like the turn indications of the older
version better than the current ones. A whoosh in the speaker followed by an
echo off of the wall you are getting closer to during a turn. I'm still
getting used to the new turn indicators. Any tips are appreciated, but I'd
rather have them in the future, as the game has only been out for one day.
Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1 tts

2009-05-26 Thread Charles Rivard
I find that the crowd sound is louder than the others, and does tend to get
in the way. I can hear the engine well enough, but would like less crowd.
Or, as talked about in another post, the return of the echo off the wall. I
think that is the best track location indicator.

Hi Valiant,

All of the sounds in Mach 1 tts should be panning back and fourth as you
move left or right in the straightaways or get close to the walls in the
turns except for your engine. It does not pan as you are sitting in your
car. You can play Mach 1 tts ok even if you can not hear your car engine.
Just shift up at 75, 125 and 175.

May I ask, does anyone else have a problem with the engine being too
quiet? I really didn't want it too loud as the other sounds are more
important to listen to for locational purposes.

So you had six months to get caught up on all of my files. Well except
for the ones that I put up last month that people had sent to me. But I
have had Mach 1 tts in mind every since I learned the joystick code for
Puppy 1. Just to keep you on your toes, I've got a couple of more game

I hope that you like Mach 1 tts. I did try it with my single stick

much more fun driving a car with a steering wheel and peddles.

Hi Jim,
I just played Mach 1 TTS, and it's lots of fun!
Unfortunately I haven't plugged in my game pad to try it out yet, so I used
the keyboard defaults.
Your description is good but some keyboards put the six pack keys in a
vertical configuration instead of horizontal so you should say what key does
what as in,

Default keyboard configuration.
The six pack is usually above the arrow keys.
right shift key = speedometer.
right control key = track position.
lower center key of the six pack, End key, = start engine and say gear.
lower right key of the six pack, page down, = say lap.
upper center key of the six pack, home key, = play horn.
lower left key of the six pack, delete key, = say current elapse race time.
left arrow key = steering left.
right arrow key = steering right.
up arrow key = up shift one gear.
down arrow key = down shift one gear.
left control key = gas peddle.
left shift key = brake peddle.

2009-05-26 Thread Charles Rivard
Some first draft thoughts on how a basketball game would work. Defense:
Your opponent is running down the court. You have to stay between him and
the hoop. If he jumps up to make a shot, you have to jump up to block the
shot. If you block it you now have the ball and are on offense. If not,
the program should calculate the likelihood of whether the attempted shot
would be successful or not. The closer the offensive player is to the hoop,
the more likely the attempt will be successful. If you allow the offensive
player to run into you by stopping your movement, you are charged with a
foul. If you foul for the sixth time during a game, whether you are on
offense or defense, you are out of the game. A foul is also charged if you
touch your opponent whether you are on offense or defense.

Offense: The opponent is blocking your progress down the court. You have
to use alternate keystrokes to bounce the ball and take a step forward,
known as dribbling. If you don't bounce the ball after each step, it is a
turnover and you are on defense. You have to maneuver around your opponent
and catch him off guard to jump up and shoot. The closer you can get to the
hoop, the more likely you will score. If you run into your opponent, it is
an offensive foul, which is also a turnover.

The game is divided into 4 12-minute quarters with a short intermission
between the first and second, third and fourth, with a longer intermission
between the second and third.

Hi Matheus,

Maybe if I ever saw how they did a one on one basketball game for the ps2,
I would have an idea as to how to do it. I really don't have any ideas as
to how it would go. Maybe part of it is that I have never been into
basketball, hockey or soccer.

Hi Chris,

It is probably not a winkit problem, but more of a sapi5 problem. I do
believe that Jaws is now using the sapi5 voices in a different way than my
games do. But anyway I hope that one of the below fixes will help get
your friends sapi5 voices working again.

The first thing that I would try would be the DelUserLex.exe file that you
can find on my free windows sapi5 text to speech games page, as well as on
the GW Micro and Freedom Scientific sites. It is a strange file in that
it doesn't say or seem to do anything, but it did fix my sapi5 voices.

Here is another fix that I was told about.

Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech
Then, press enter on Sapisvr.exe. It won't say anything, but it should
correct the control panel entries for Sapi.

Another thing that you can do is to use the Windows XP restore feature to
restore your computer back to a date when the voices were working.

And then there is to use your Windows XP cd to repair the entire sapi5
text to speech engine.

you can download (SpeechSDK51MSM.exe).
which contains all of the Microsoft Sapi voices available for Windows XP

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1 tts

2009-05-26 Thread dark

Hi Jim.

Well I freely admit I've been lazy about updates recently, owing to being in
egypt and taken up with other matters, but all of your stuff including
mack 1 is done now.

Personally, I found the game to be honest damnably difficult on a keyboard.

I'll freely admit though, racing games aren't particularly my forte at the
best of times, particularly ones with such sensative controls.

Sinse I already have a monstrous X arcade stick, I really should buy the usb
adapter so that I can plug it into a pc, I'm not sure why I haven't,
accept that I've actually got used to playing games on a keyboard.

And to think when I was 9 and we owned an amigar, playing on keyboard was
punishment for anyone who cheated! lol!

I'll look forward to more games.

While I'll frankly admit Mac 1 is a bit of a strain for me, I've had lots of
fun with puppy 1, - perfect for a quick turn on and blast session!

Beware the Grue!

So you had six months to get caught up on all of my files. Well except

2009-05-26 Thread piotr machacz
hi jim, I had this idea, I was thinking about when you shift gears and
brake, maybe we could have some better sounds, a click for gears and
the sounds of tires squealing when you brake? as for the engine
volume, the best stage of the engine volume I like is right after you
hear 10 and the countdown starts, and then the sapi pretty much
doesn't let me hear the engine that much and I like the engine sound.
ok I'm off to get my times better at a particular track!

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1 tts

2009-05-26 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Valiant,

All of the sounds in Mach 1 tts should be panning back and fourth as you move
left or right in the straightaways or get close to the walls in the turns
except for your engine. It does not pan as you are sitting in your car. You
can play Mach 1 tts ok even if you can not hear your car engine. Just shift up
at 75, 125 and 175.

May I ask, does anyone else have a problem with the engine being too quiet? I
really didn't want it too loud as the other sounds are more important to listen
to for locational purposes.

Re: [Audyssey] Mach 1 tts

2009-05-26 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Charles,

But the thing is, with the new sound scheme of Mach 1 tts, the sounds tell you
which way the next turn will turn and how close you are getting to the start of
that turn. Not just driving down a straightaway and all of a sudden a noise
tells you that you have just started into a left turn that you didn't even know
was coming. The same with the sounds in the turn letting you know how far
along in the turn you are.

Now if it is just that you liked the wind echo sound better than the crowd
sound, I could make that an option.
