[Audyssey] Audio walkthru of Judgementday

2010-05-31 Thread Castanedagarcia_Alfredo
Hello audyssey,
Could someone record an audio ralkthru of Judgement day? A friend of mine, the
same one whome I have been sending messages to, wants me to record it, but you
all know my stereo mix is broken. I was wondering if someone could record it in
different sections to save space.
Let me know when it has been made.

2010-05-31 Thread shaun everiss

well I have got about 40gb of sounds from a friend that has the libs.
However I have seen and bought several libraries of sfx that are royalty free.
the authentic sfx packs are royalty free, and I have several imporial
and other 10 dollar royalty free sfx disks.
So if the sounds are royalty free then they probably are usable
anywhere or at least you don't have to pay back the devs.
Free sound libs like those at the site www.recordist.com although
this is a small lib these are free.
I know the a1 sfx site is free and if you search findsounds.com you
can probably find some sfx libs that are free.

At 04:41 p.m. 31/05/2010, you wrote:

Hi tom.

Hmmm, I assumed that once a sound library was perchiced by an

I find myself continually amazed at how restrictive copywrite law
is. I've mentioned myself how it has practically stopped people in
England getting hold of books for a considderable time, but if a
philanthropic action like that I proposed essentially ment for the
purposes of sharing would be considdered a breach of law, I find
that practically insane!

It seems that laws intended simply to insure an individuals' right
to recieve creddit for his/her own creative work have,
unsurprisingly given the general nastiness of unregulated
capitalism, morphed into just another tool for extracting the
maximal amount of prophit from any enterprise.

Getting back to my idea though, my thought was that all developers
who wished to be involved club together as a group for this purpose,
and the actual buying and administration of donations is done by a third party.

So, the sounds would be licensed to the developement resources
collective (or whatever the heck we called it), who's members would
included Thomas ward, Phil Vlasac, Che martin etc, but the actual
buying of the license would be the responsability of the
administrator, whoever that would be.

i'd hope that would get around the evil capitalist evil.

Beware the grue!

Hi Charles,

I agree, I am usually more into nascar rather than the Indy, but the Indy 500
was pretty darn good this year. The Coka Cola 600 would have been better for
me if Jimmy Johnson had not crashed. Pretty darn good race though.
Surprisingly few cars conked out.

It sure was a nice day of one thousand one hundred miles of auto racing.

Hi Gary,
Well, one miner comment to add to your post. Technically the game
isn't being designed with the keyboard user in mind here. Yes, it has
keyboard support, but I am designing the game mechanics and game play
around the Logitec Momo Racing Wheel the same way Jim Kitchens Match 1
TTS game is. There is so much more you can do with a racing wheel with
force feedback support than your plane vinilla keyboard. Improved
responce times and more accurate stearing just being two of the big
ones.
I know when playing Rail Racer there is a huge difference in keyboard
control and stearing wheel control. When I was practicing the game
using the keyboard I was discovering in online play everyone was
dusting me left and right. They were cutting there track times in
half, and I was just the slow guy in the race. Well, when I purchased
the racing wheel for Raceway Ssuddenly my lap times were rapidly
improving and I was able to stear the racer better. Especially, when
taking those curves in Rail Racer which is where you lose all your
speed and momentem.
Another point of having a racing wheel with feedback support it is
like stearing the car with certainr estrictions on how fast you can
turn and the motors inside simulate actually trying to make a
difficult turn. If you end up running into the marbel I can have the
ff wheel vibrate like crazy simulate running over rough terrain which
will likely destroy your tires in the process. However, the vibration
will give you a good clue you aren't on the track any more. Keyboards
just can't give you nearly as much control or feedback.

Hi,
At this point I really don't know. One problem I am having with the
game is a lot of this gets to be really technical, and goes way over
my head. While I watch the ocational Nascar race and have played some
of the racing games out there I'm not a hard core racing nut.
Watching a few races now and then and playing the games now and then
is a lot different then trying to program a really major racing game
from scratch. It takes a lot of motivation, dedication, and an
enjoyment for the project I really don't feel.
Personally, I could care less if there is a qualifier before the race
to find out your starting position or a set of random times to just
select an automatic starting position for each car. I have to do that
for the AI cars anyway so what's one more car right?
However, I know if I don't add a qualifier some hard core racing fans
out here are going to be realy disappointed, and knowing what I know
about this community I'll never hear the end of it until I give them
one. So eventually there will likely be a qualifier, but it is lower
priority than the other features of the game.
Right now. The test version that was written in C#, and is currently
being ported to C++ simply randomly selects a starting position from 1
to 43 and lines the cars up in whatever random order it chooses. Not
very realistic, but it works.

On 5/30/10, Charles Rivard woofer...@sbcglobal.net wrote:
I'd start with all 43 and go from there. Will there be qualifying before
each race to see where you're starting position in the race will be? Time

Seeing as the thread has changed, I changed the subject line to reflect the
content. Is it my perception, or is wave 4 usually more intense than wave 5

in the levels? If I can make it through wave 4 with no enemy ships landing,

I can just about figure on getting a bonus. I can get a bonus every once in

Indeed, I've only managed it on the first world, and only then with
 difficulty.

I do think Draconis should make it easier to access, perhaps by
getting a certain amounts of points or one shot kills on a single
wave, or by making it every wave you get a no lander bonus on, not
 every five waves.

 Hi Dark,
The only bonus level I can get to is in level 4 with the violet ships, I
honestly think you can't do it in the other levels. Too many ships, and
 you
never get turboes. Or at least, not enough.

Well, I'll hope that Draconis get to more developement generally.

At least if they're rewriting the games they can fix some of the common
issues, like add some more accurate and workable nav tools into monkey
business and actually make it possible to reach the bonus stage in Alien
Outback (something I've only ever managed to do once, though i've
 completed
the game start to finish last boss included several times).

 Hi Dark,
Well, I got that impression as well. However, I suppose it is possible
the reason the have not released any more party packs is do to their
decision to convert Pinball Extreme to C++ and port it to Mac OS. in
that case it makes sence to discontinue the existing game and start
over fresh with the newer game, and then put out more party packs and
updates. That's what I'd do if I were Josh.

The Party Pack of pinball tables is a good example of this, increasing

Saying I identify sounds by colour is not actually quite right.

it's more the sense that the way I experience sounds, indeed any
sensations bar sight, is with a combination of colour and tactile sense.
This goes for concepts and days of the weak as well.

This is why I'm so impressed by good quality sounds and ambience because
they improve the Graphics of the game.

As to the happy houses thing, it was in a litle game one amigar Magazine put
out for christmas calls psycho Santa.

Naughty jack frost had stolen Christmas cheer from a village, and you had to
bomb houses with presents from above while taking out various flying nasties
(including giant rubber chickens and killer snowmen), with your deadly snow
balls of doom!

Each level was named happy house 1, make one house happy and reflected
the number of houses you needed to drop presents on to complete the level.

I believe it got up to ten before you finished the game.

I have seen the case of a chap who was blind from birth, but was also

When he was wired to a brain scan and sounds were played to him, the same
neurons fired in his brain as would with someone seeing colour. He himself

Aliens in the Outback, I prefer giving reference to the ship by the

Well there's no really standard way of naming levels, some games have
worlds, some waves, I've also seen mines, caves, dungeons, castles,
parts, zones, areas, sectors, blocks, boards, floors, days, and even
happy houses!

So, forgive me if I get terms scrambled.

As to ship colour, the problem is sinse I'm synaesthesic, all the ships
appear a totally different colour to me. The ships with the shields (red
I believe), sound deffinately light blue, and those ships that move
around are actually green and purple.

I can't really do anything about this, it's just the way my perception
of sound works, though it is quite fun sinse in a sense it gives
audio games graphics for me ;D.

Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered SPace Invader Clones?

2010-05-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Louis,
Well, while there haven't really been many accessible games that are
truly a Space Invader clone, per say, many of the arcade style games
out there like Aliens in the Outback, Troopenum, and Dark Destroyer
are close enough to the SpaceInvader idea/concept that they are
classified as Space Invader clones. Personally, I'd rather a developer
stay clear of the arcade shoot-m-up type games were you have to shoot
down spaceships, planes, helicopters, whatever as they fall out of the
sky. In my opinion weather we are talking Aliens in the Outback or
Judgment Day there are already too many games of this type on the VI
market. There are plenty of other arcade games out there like
centipede, Zaxxon, Time Pilot, Donkey Kong, etc that haven't ever
been tried in audio yet. So if you are thinking of going the classic
arcade route try something that hasn't been done before.

Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered SPace Invader Clones?

2010-05-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Correction. In Asteroids your ship is not stationary. You have
thrusters to move your ship forward, left, and right through the
asteroid field. You shoot the asteroids to break them apart and then
shoot the smaller asteroids etc until they are completely destroyed.
On the higher difficulty levels a little green UFO shows up to give
you something else to think about besides clearing asteroid fields.
That's the original Asteroids anyway.
Some years later in the mid to late 1990's Activision released an all
new Asteroids game for the PC which was far more interesting than the
Atari classic. There were cut-scenes and special missions to embark
on. the over all story was changed in that there was this alien race
that wanted to destroy planet Earth by sending an astroid field in the
path of Earth which would have whiped out the human race. It was your
job to intercept those asteroids and destroy them before they reached
Earth. You were equipped with a ship with lasers, a battering ram,
deflector shields, etc. After a couple of levels the aliens themselves
showed up to see what you were doing and you not only had to take out
the asteroids but whipe out the alien invasion fleet too. Pretty darn
cool game.

going to do what Liam did with judgement day and have lots of extras,
there's really not much I can think of.

perhaps, a shooting game based on a different concept. For instance,
asteroids, where your ship is stationary but you spin arround to shoot

Generally anything that avoids the basic left/right fire model would be

ships by color as well.
For one thing when arcade games first started coming out in the late

give everything a different color to make the games colorful and with
lots of splashy graphics. that truly was a revolutionary thing for us

As early as 1984 I remember what they did with Montezuma's Revenge,
and how they did their best to give each room a different color scheme
to make each room and level different. As you know there were white,
red, and blue keys that when to the white, red, and blue doors. Some
rooms were in yellow if there was sunlight coming in and otheres were
I want to say a violet color if it was gloomy. If it was bpitch black
the entire screen went black unless Panama Joe happened to have a
torch.
When the Nintendo came out it was of course 256 color, and the
graphics were even better yet. In large part because it put the 16
color scheme of games like Packman and Montezuma's Revenge to shame.
The first Nintendo game I ever played was Super Mario and the game
worlds were much more colorful and visually apealing.
At any rate speaking as a sighted gamer I always associated things by
color. Like go to room 4 and get the red key. Go to room 6 and open
the red door. Jump on the blue block and break it. You get the idea.

interesting indeed, especialy from the point of view of someone with

Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered Space Invader Clones?

2010-05-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Exactly. Not only the games you mentioned but in the early 1980's,
perhaps 1980, or so there was a game called Demon Attack which was
pretty much a knock off version of Space Invaders itself. Basicly, you
had this cannon which you moved left/right trying to shoot down these
demons with wings as they tried to blow you up. It was a highly
adictive game, but the graphics were very poor because they were in
black and white, and it was basicly the same game play as Space
Invaders.
The point is the classic arcade game where you move left/right while
trying to shoot something out of the sky is as old as vidio gaming,
and I for one don't want to see more games of this style. I lived
through the 80's and saw my share of those games already. However, I
also seen a lot more arcade games that were nothing like Space
Invaders such as side-scrollers, beat-m-ups, Breakout style of games,
etc. There is a lot more to the classic arcade game than Space
Invaders that's for sure.
As you and I know when the Nintendo came out the side-scrollers like
Megaman really launched a totally new era of gaming. they were still
arcade type games, but they were a huge departcher from the Space
Invader and Pac-Man era of games. This is where I'd like to see
accessible games go.

Re: [Audyssey] ship colors - Re: aliens in the outback

2010-05-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Yeah, that's exactly the type of thing I was talking about. Of course,
there was no need for Megaman to change color when he used a boss
weapon, but back then I just thought it was cool. However, it was
that sort of showing off and rapidly changing colors that impressed
the heck out of those of us who grew up witht the first black and
white games. I also see how that might accidently have became an
accessibility aid for you.

What you say about the Nes reminds me of a bit in the original Mega man
manual where his changing colour whenever he uses a boss weapon was
actuallly listed as a special feature (also great as a low vision access

The only one I've really played is judgment day, but you're right. There
are already a lot of clones out there. What I really miss is the old Apple

would be wonderful if that could be ported over to Windows.

Hi Thomas,
I wish there was a sound encryption that was adjustable.
In other words, you could encrypt some sounds and have others able to be
changed.

One way would be to have all wav files encrypted, and all mp3 files not.
The usual use of mp3 files is for background music or long cut scenes.
This way the specific sounds of a game could not be messed with but the
music could change.
You could also add mp3 choices if you wanted the customer to add any choices
of their own.

well one thing I have seen in games like duke3d is that the sounds
and music were packaged in files though those were able to be
extracted eventually, however the game had the ability to read
outside its files so anyone could for example make their own music and sfx.
In d3d, although the game was not free the configuration scripts were
and as long as you followed a spaciffic language you could mod the game.

ofcause we don't have to be that complex but.
I have stfc1, some person on pkb released a mod which modified the
sound files and these are really realistic.

Re: [Audyssey] financial colaboration was: a drastic change isneeded for audio games.

2010-05-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
It is pretty much like anything else in life. When you purchase
anything it is yours to use so long as you follow the rules or
guidelines the company or companies tell you via their license
agreements. It is capitalism at its worst. The concept of copyright
law may have started out with the intend to help rotect someones work,
to see they got credit for it, but big industry has been able to turn
copyright law into a weapon to use against any potential rivals.
One of the most rediculous cases of this in living memory is Intel
verses AMD. During the 1990's Intel and AMD were locked in a war to
design the next generation processor for the PC. At the time the best
processor around was the 486, and both Intel and AMD were working
independantly on a 586 processor design. As it happens Intel created
there 586 processor first and got a pattent for it before AMD. A few
months later AMD profected their 586 processor and Intel screamed
bloody murder over it, and right away took AMD to court over it. They
said that the 586 processor was a patented design and AMD could not
create a 586 processor under copyright law, and the 586 trademark was
the soul property of Intel Corp. As it turned out the two trashed it
out in court and it went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court
before it got settled.
As it turns out since AMD had designed there processor independantly,
in that the technical specifications wer different from Intel's
design, the two processors were legally two different products. As for
the 586 trademark the Supreme Court issued a ruling that a number can
not be trademarked by a company or individual. Only a unique name or
specially identifying trademark could be trademarked. Soon after the
ruling Intel renamed their 586 processor line the Pentium and AMD the
K5.
While these stupid rivalries over copyrights seam to be happening
between the members of the upper class there is a major backlash going
on in the lower classes who simply refuse to be aparty to that kind of
legalistic abuse of copyright over software and everything else. The
GNU Linux software movement is just a case in point of people who
believe that software should be freely shared, distributed, and copied
so much as long as the author or authors of the software get credit
for their contribution to the work. I know of several independant
musicians that are now licensing their music, some of it pretty good,
under the Creative Commons license as they don't want to be a part of
the RIAA and their strong arm appproach to music copyrights. There
are plenty of people who are sick and tired of the existing
restrictive copyright laws, but big business as usual is trying to
stomp them flat in court.
One case in particular is Microsoft verses Red Hat. Microsoft claimed
that the term window was a trademark, and that the Gnome open source
desktop was a copy of Microsoft windows. As it turned out Microsoft
lost the case and Red Hat as well as other Linux distributions are
still around. However, this only goes to prove the point that big
business really doesn't want any kind of serious competition. They
will use the copyright laws to try and stomp the competition flat if
the courts will let them. What they really want is to have a monopoly
which in of itself is illegal in the United States and past presidents
like Theodore Roosevelt tried to break up trusts and monopolies in the
early 1900's in order to have a more fair free market econemy. We
really don't see our government doing that any more because they are
getting paid big money by said companies to vote their way.

Hi Dark,
It is pretty much like anything else in life.

Hi,
Well, in your case the name Shaun is pretty common and already is in
the name database. However, if we want to be able to expand it one way
of solving that problem is create a file called Name_Custom.wav that
the person can use to replace it with his/her actual name. However,
this wouldn't work if I used sound encryption. So I am not certain how
to handle it for sure.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was The other side

2010-05-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil,
Thanks to the way Streemway is designed I could do exactly that. I
could leave the speech files unencrypted, but encrypt the music,
cars, etc with Streemway. That is one thing I really like about the
library. You can load from an encrypted sound pack or load a wave or
ogg file directly from the hard drive.
As for mp3 Streemway doesn't support mp3 files, because of the
licensing issues over that format. It is no longer free and open
source and you have to pay royalties to support mp3 in your product.
So Streemway uses ogg vorbus for sound compression instead. That's
fine with me since ogg tends to have a little better audio quality
with a higher compression ratio.

Smile.

 Hi Thomas,
I wish there was a sound encryption that was adjustable.
In other words, you could encrypt some sounds and have others able to be
 changed.
One way would be to have all wav files encrypted, and all mp3 files not.
The usual use of mp3 files is for background music or long cut scenes.
This way the specific sounds of a game could not be messed with but the
 music could change.
You could also add mp3 choices if you wanted the customer to add any choices
 of their own.

crappyest system possible you can get.

it lasted me for a couple years before finally breaking.
It would die during and before exams.
every 2 weeks I reformatted the system just to keep it going.
I think the longest time I had the system running was 6 months.
They are also slack and sometimes slow.
sometimes they don't communicate well.
Case in point I was trying to service my brailler because it was
broke and out of use for a bit.

I was directed through several offices ending finally in an answerphone.
luckily I knew the manufacturer of my unit on a personal basis so I
can get out that way but if I didn't then hmmph.

Hi Tom. I think you have a point... so many games are released by
japanese

companies that Katanas or martial arts are almost inevitable. Although, I
think Japanese cultures also mesh wel with games, particularly the swords
and fighting styles.

I also have an interest in history and mythology though, and think the
Katana is getting somewhat overused. I wouldn't complain about a game
with

say a roman gladus as Dark said, an aztec macuhitl, which is a club lined
with obsidian as a kind of sword. The lattor could even be an addition to
Mota, since it's about aztecs. Again, just my opinion.

Hi,
Right. Mysteries of the Ancients is set in an ancient Greek
underground tomb, and has nothing to do with Aztecs. Although, I know
where someone might get confused if they haven't read the updated
storyline since Mysteries of the Ancients came out in beta. I assume
that he is still thinking of Montezuma's Revenge which has been gone
for two entire years.

Hi Clement,
Wow! You are really out of the loop. The title Mysteries of the Aztecs
was a temperary name I stuck on the game to get out from under the
copyright issues with the original copyright holders. Eventually,
though I renamed it Mysteries of the Ancients which was better suited
to the new game and storyline.

well one reason although slightly off topic is they buy the cheapest
crappyest system possible you can get.
it lasted me for a couple years before finally breaking.

[Audyssey] STFC Mod was Raceway

2010-05-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Regardless if the mod is ready or not as the developer of STFC I think
if PKB has something to share they should share it with the developer
in question in case he might want to include the mod into his game.
After all even though I don't talk about it much there is a STFC 2.0
being developed here, and it sounds like if this mod is really good
I'd like to incorperate it into the next major release. If nothing
else I could work with them as 2.0 is a ratherbig departcher from 1.x,
and as soon as MOTA is released STFC 2 is going to follow not too long
afterwords. So whatever they are working on now is going to be
outdated in the next six months to a year from now.

Smile.

I'll need to ask if the mods are ready for release or not.
