Re: [Audyssey] Monty Keystroke
Hi, I do strongly encourage you to leave it as it is now. I am sure there was no distance indication in the original game either, you could just judge only by your eyes, as well as we can only judge by our ears. I feel that by adding such a feature, you'd remove the only real challenge in the game, besides the exploration of the temples itself. It quite upsets me that most audiogamers want everything to be simplified as much as possible just a minute after they cannot get beyond one point in the game. That's right and I am sorry about forgetting it. You'd have to install SP2 and all the security windows updates then. So I hope the Sapi fix utility will really fix your Sapi. Re: [Audyssey] for tom.
Hi, I wasn't aware there was a fix utility for Sapi. If I knew about it at the time when I might have needed it, I would certainly give it a try. But even complete uninstallation and reinstallation of Sapi 5 didn't help me at the time, so I could only reinstall the entire system from scratch. Re: [Audyssey] troop2 help!
Yeah, wider screen is more difficult, but I am sure that missions like gorbian revenge or resurrection could give you a hard time even on easy and with the normal width of screen, at least for the first time. Yeah, you have to be fast with the destroyers. If memory server me correctly, they are like the hower crafts? I haven't played Troop 2 in a while. Yeah, they can be really tough then, I know - you already have them targeted and are ready to fire, and then they just change spot at once and you have to target them all over again, they are already very close to landing, you almost got'm, quickly, bm! No! <*smiles* And the darn Vector laughter, as this was your last life. Haha. Re: [Audyssey] for tom.
Yeah, you might try that, but uninstall anything that has to do with Sapi before. If that doesn't help, just look for your Microsoft Windows XP or whatever version of the system you have CD, find setup.exe there in the root directory (hope that hasn't changed since 98, as I don't have the XP disk myself) and launch the installation. It shouldn't be that difficult and annoying. Try reinstalling Sapi once again after the system reinstall, and it could fix your issues. Re: [Audyssey] for tom.
Hi Simon, seems that something is majorly wrong with your installation of Sapi. I had a similar problem. A friend of mine created a little freeware program called Text to mp3, which does exactly that - takes a .txt file and converts it into mp3 using Sapi, excellent for reading ebooks or any longer documents in general when travelling on your mp3 player, etc. External applications that try to access Sapi have to do so through the sapi.spvoice object, and my installation of Sapi got somehow broken one day, I don'T know even now what was the cause of it. My screen reader still worked, but all other appz, including the text2mp3, couldn't create the sapi.spvoice object any more, which was causing similar crashes to yours whenever there was an attempt to access Sapi. NOthing I could do fixed this problem, and as I wasn't given any XP installation CD with my computer, probably by accident, only thing I could do was to reformat my system partition and install a system recovery I was given, making the system look exactly the same as it was the day I got it. Only this was able to fix the problem. So I guess to remove any and all traces of Sapi you might have on your system, reinstall Windows (if you have the installation CD, a common reinstall on the top of the current system should do it) and then install Sapi 5.1 again. Re: [Audyssey] rts rallying
Say you have a baracks at e1 and want 5 footmen to be recruited and to patrol C1, which is 2 squares to the left. You have enough resources to recruit 5 footmen. So you could press w until you control baracks 1, then shift a to select the order "raly to", then select c1 with the arrow keys and press enter. You could focus yourself on more important things from now on, and just order the baracks to order 5 footmen. They would automatically go to c1. You won't have to issue the order to each of them and you can use the saved time to control your peasants to build a sawnyl, for example. Re: [Audyssey] dict x for june?
Hi, no, no. These files are just the installation itself. So you should unpack them into a temporary folder of your choice. Then there will be setup.exe or dxsetup.exe, I don't remember the exact name, but it'll have something to do with setup. :-) Run this file and just keepon clicking next till everything's installed, then you can delete them temp folder. Re: [Audyssey] Monty, my thoughts
Hi, s p o i l e r if you climb down the first rope you can find in the game, you'll be in a room with two snakes, one of them on the left and the other on the right. There are 2 keys that the right snake is guarding, each one is a different colour, but I can't remember exactly which key is which colour. And the left snake is guarding the first warp platform. [Audyssey] anyone up for a game of Soundrts
Hi, I would so much like to try multiplaying against someone. There are 4 servers currently, one hosted by Willem, one by GF and two by Andre. The Willem and Gf servers are unreachable to me and I cannot do anything on the Andre servers. So, if anyone likes to play, invite me to a game or join my server, let me know. I shall be around for the next half an hour. Then I'll go to bed if noone replies. Thanks, Lukas ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] SoundRTS
Yeah, the ability to fire your own units or buildings could come in handy at times. I think the unit blindness thing is something like this: When you order an unit to go somewhere, it calculates the shortest and straightest path. And when something is blocking the way, it doesn't realize that it should go elsewhere and just keeps on trying. This is what I think. Re: [Audyssey] the doors in scw really presents a problem
Hi Nicol, it's true that the different Sarah setup can sometimes make me confused, and that the door snoring sound is sometimes too quiet for my liking. HOwever, I think I can get along with them quite fine now. h i n t You usually face a closed door directly in real life if you want to open it. But you don't always have to face a door directly if you look at it strictly. If you knew the door was on your left 50 feet ahead of you, for example, you could move closely along the left hand wall till you reached the door and had it directly to the left of you. This is exactly what I do both in SOD and Sarah. If the passage continues forward and there are doors on both sides I mean. I just sidestep to the wall and go ahead till the door is close enough, then press enter to open it and turn to it. If a door is directly ahead of me, there is no problem in locating it. Re: [Audyssey] Monty First impressions
I don't know if Pspad can read the MS Word documents but I doubt. I may give it a try though. HOwever, whenever I want a long document to be converted into HTML, I just save it as plain text (I believe RTF could work too) and open it in Pspad and just choose "convert to html". The coolest thing about this feature is that it preserves the formating of your original file when possible, so you have the same paragraphs and fonts used in the HTML file. Then I can do any changes I need manually, and it really makes the work much easier and saves loads of time. I can't really remember the website for Pspad off the top of my head but you or me could do a search for it. I am sure Google can find the correct site among the first 10 displayed links when you search for pspad. Re: [Audyssey] Monty First impressions
Hi Tom, as for coding the HTML manual, why not use an advanced text editor such as Pspad to convert the text document into HTML and then just create the fragment links as necessary? You could just create a heading for each section and turn the entries in the table of contents into links that would put you to the appropriate fragments of the page. If I imagine it this way, it shouldn't take more than 10 to 15 minutes. I can do it for you if and when you like. [Audyssey] Soundrts - heartly encouragement
Hi Jean-Luc, thanks for your fast responses and flexibility. It makes me really pleased and proud that such a project is in the hands of someone like you who is apparently mature enough to develop such a game and really knows what the heck he's doing. I think the blind gaming community couldn't possibly have gotten a more experienced developer in this area of gaming and a more qualified one for such job. I don't understand the french page about the Soundmud project so I cannot tell what it's all about, or maybe I wasn't patient enough to browse through it and look for single words that I would perhaps figure out. Nevertheless, I don't know what's going on behind the curtain, but from what you're saying, it sounds as if you only have a limited timeframe at your disposal to continue developing Sound RTS, so that you will only be able to implement so many more changes and improvements. To me, such attitude is a real shame. If there were more cool new features or changes waiting in a long queue to be put into the game that would never reach the release only just cause there wasn't time for them, that would ruin the entire wonderful idea behind the game. If I were you, I would put as much free time into further development as possible. I would even put up with the perspective of never releasing another game in my lifetime, which I of course don't want from you. I am just saying that making this game as complex and revolutionary as possible, even if it had to be your only production, would certainly be worth the effort. Don't hesitate and make it a commercial release, go ahead and open the gates in your mind for all the unbelievable thoughts waiting to come out. This! Heck! Of! A! Game! Is! Really! Worth! It! Re: [Audyssey] About SoundRTS
Hi, if you have problems with silence at the end of the wav files, then why not remove it manually? I mean, you could load each sound into Goldwave, Sound Forge, Adobe Audition, Audacity or another similar sound editing software and just trim the silence. I know there is a command in Sony Sound Forge 8.0 exactly for this purpose: Select auto trim/crop in the process menu, and the last available preset in the list called "trim silence from ends" will do just that. However, it would sound much cooler to have human speech recorded for the game. But I don't mind the current voice at all, as I am used to a really terribly-sounding Czech synthesis for Sapi. When it comes to voiceovers, I really love the idea of having an extra voice for every unit. Even if the same phrases were used for all units, different voices would really mean a significant difference. Well, I'm not used to strategy games either and SoundRTS is the first ever audiogame of this genre I believe, so more experienced gamers might have more sufficient requirements, but I quite like the keyboard layout. Yes, it's not very standard and it takes a bit of practice to get used to it, but hey, the entire game is not very standard and takes a bit of practice to get used to. I am still struggling to beat chapter two of singleplayer mode so I'm still learning all the odds and ends of the unusual layout and of the game interface in general, but I appreciate its flexibility and intuitivity. I can imagine that I will be able to control my units really quickly when I get used to all the aspects of it. I haven't had problems with the population limit yet, but to make it dependant on the number of players or adjustable in the options menu seems good to me. Hope this helps. I would really like to thank you for a way cool, wonderful, new and revolutionary game. For such a little freebie, you've done one brilliant piece of hard work, and the result is certainly well worth the effort. I didn't know strategy games of this type before but I can see now what makes all the sighted gamers so much addicted to these games. A bit better sound effects could perhaps help the game a great deal. If I find something I consider usable, I might send it to you if you like. Take care for now, Lukas - Original Message - From: "SoundMUD" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Friday, July 06, 2007 5:08 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] About SoundRTS Here are some answers. To limit the size of the message I will reply to other questions in another message. 1. The voices are not good. I'm really sorry for the poor intelligibility of the voices. I used ESpeak instead of MS Mary or Mike because there was silence at the end of each wav file, and I didn't find quickly a solution to automatically trim the silence with Sox (Sox is the command line sound utility I use for batch processing of the sounds). I will solve this problem and use MS Mary or Mike instead. I prefer using a freely available voice anyway for now. The voices are in wav sound files that are assembled at runtime. In the first versions I recorded my voice and the result was quite intelligible, but then I managed to automatically build sound files from text to speech, and it was less intelligible but more flexible. When the program stops evolving, a recorded human voice will be great of course. 2. Why not directly use a TTS? I wanted the game to be playable with a standard Windows computer, and even in Windows XP there is no SAPI 5 default French voice provided. This is not a sufficient reason because the gamers interested by this game have at least one SAPI 5 voice installed in their computer. Another reason is that the voice synthesis takes in some cases to much CPU time on some computers (in fact I added Mbrola to SoundMUD in version 0.10 and removed it in the next release!). Anyway using a TTS (with SAPI for example) may be a solution. But I will have to keep the possibility to record the voices, for example automatically using TTS only if the wav file doesn't exist. 3. The keyboard layout could be better. I tried to find a not too horrible keyboard layout. There is probably a better layout. I may put the layout in a separate file so you can modify it. You can give suggestions too, but try to use for a while the current layout first. I'm not familiar with audiogames, so tell me if something is nonstandard. 4. Google translation: Audio-games.net, A site entirely dedicated to the games adapted for defective visual ones. Yes, automatic translation gives funny results. In fact "déficients visuels" probably means "visually impaired". By the way the comment was not about Audiogames.net but about "Jeux access", which is a French web site and a mailing list with about the same topic than Audiogames.net or Audyssey. The ideas behind SoundRTS came from reading gamers wishes in the "Jeux access" mailing list, and from my own gaming experience of course. Anyway I will translate
Re: [Audyssey] Soundrts: Help with first person?
I know that the instructions sometimes sound a bit odd, maybe that's because the game dev is French and English is his second language. Anyways, the instructions both in the help index.html and in the game itself are pretty clear and self-explanatory. Re: [Audyssey] have learned
Some people will just never change, this is useless. It's too easy to throw in a whole load of words to calm people down, but if only this was a personal meeting or at least a Skype conference, it wouldn't be so easy to pretend. It's so sad that there are way too many spoiled egoists like this whose brains can never work out even the simplest concepts of human life on Earth. Only just because of these people when they grow up is it that our lovely hurt planet which most of us consider to be nothing more than one large piece of stone is slowly getting destroyed. You might pretend this does not happen or close your eyes but it does happen. Either we will experience a miracle i the very near future, or we'll all die too young and strong to put up with it. But the worst of all is not our ignorance and arogance. That could be forgiven, we are just little children who believe they know everything they need as best as they can and have just got a new toy called the universe. The worst is our lack of love and understanding, our concentration on our own selfish, little, ridiculous ambitions. This is what can never be forgiven when everybody needs each other, or will son need them in the most difficult time of existence. That's all. You can moderate me if you want or think I am a fool, I would accept it. Turning our back on someone who says what we don't wanna hear is a common attitude to prevent the truth from hitting us hard in the head. I won't say anything else about it anyway, cause most people wouldn't even understand me. I am just sad and upset that such little kids who can have everything they want when they do just a little screaming, or work around the obstacles using as less force as possible when they don't get it immediately, who don't even understand the world and love nobody and nothing else more than themselves, are the cause of it all. [Audyssey] blind-friendly PS emulation or a "mix your own music" type program
Hi folks, does anyone of you know about any blind accessible software that can emulate Sony Play Station or perhaps even PS2 and runs under XP? That is, if something like this even exists? ;) I am not much of a programmer but I believe the only things that could make trouble are the unusual format of the CD and the PS joystick. The joystick could be simulated through the keyboard and I know that when I inserted a PS disk into my DVD-ram drive, it was capable of seeing the data on it. I can recall someone telling me something about a Play Station chip having to be installed on your computer in order for it to be able to process the PS disks when I was a little boy, but I donT remember any technical details, so I don't know what to think about it. I am especially interested in the Music Creator 2003 program or whatever it was called. I do have the CD around here somewhere and I would really like to reproduce one of my old songs that I have tape-recorded some years ago and now found by accident. ;) So, if it isn't possible to read PS disks without a PS chip, or if there isn't any accessible emulation software anywhere, then perhaps there is a remake of the Music creator software for the PC? Thanks a lot in advance and apologies for the way unusual question. Take care, Lukas ___ Gamers mailing list .. If you've already managed to register RR, you shall be fine to uninstall the 1.1 version of the framework, at least this is what Che said: RR can run fine with 2.0 or even 3.0, but the registration module needs 1.1 and none other. Re: [Audyssey] Rale racer registering trouble
Hi, why don't you just download the demo version of Jaws or Win-eyes and set it to start before you log into the system? That way you could easily install .Framework 1.1, get around the logon screen with no trouble and then just remove the .net framework accounts from the system? It would reliably fix your issue, and you might have to do it in the end, as I doubt there could be a way to work around the implemented RR licensing system. Re: [Audyssey] rail racer demo, it can't run
If you have used this dxwebsetup, then there's no need to copy any info about Directx. It should be right now. Then you should probably check windows update for any express and important updates as well as the optional ones, especially look for anything regarding the .net Framework. Don't download 3.0 - it's not very backwards compatible. Try to find the latest updates and hotfixes for 1.1, or .net framework 2.0, but not 3.0. Re: [Audyssey] rail racer
You could probably increase your gear ratio even to 1. With the supercharger, you should accelerate rather quickly. Now, it's a deal to bear art on the pro level even on the class 1 tracks without the supercharger. And with the mouse when you're not used to it. ;) Just try increasing the ratio gradually. You might not perhaps accelerate with 0.6 as with 1, but the top speed will increase a great deal. It's also great to use nitro when you loose speed in the loops (in fact right at the beginning of a loop) or when there's a long section where you can go straight ahead without any obstacles and gather speed. Be careful though, as nitro burns out a load of additional fuel. Re: [Audyssey] rail racer demo, it can't run
Yeah, that's it. Rail Racer requires tha latest June update for Directx 9.0C. You can download the "dxwebsetup.exe" utility which will download and install the latest available version of DX 9.0C for you from Thomas's website at http://www.usagames.us, then the download center link, then system requirements, Download Microsoft Directx 9.0C web setup. Or you can download a full redistributable package of the latest update directly from Che's site. Re: [Audyssey] rail racer general problem
As I understand it, Dx 10 has different components that handle playing sounds and multiplayer game. You know, the brand new Microsoft rubbish. :-) At least this is what I was told. The old components aren't supported any longer for reasons that perhaps even Bill Gates doesn't know. [Audyssey] Future patches for Sarah
Hi Phil, are you working or do you want to work on any more patches for Sarah currently? I installed the 1.0 release when it first came out and then patched it up with every new patch that became available, but there are still quite a few nasty bugs or at least odd behaviours even with the last patch. In fact, maybe there are more of them now than before. There's the thing with the headless hats that you said you accidentally made the hats untakable or something like that. Then the game occasionally freezes or slows down rapidly for a couple of seconds without any obvious reason, or at least I wasn't able to discover any regular pattern yet. Then, when you walk from one surface to another, or when there are just simply too many sounds playing at once, some of them don't stop when they're supposed to, etc... Several little malfunctions, but they're still malfunctions. I'm just making sure whether you are aware of these and want to do something about them. Thanks, Lukas ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] SL Airbot battle.
This is also more or less what I do. I keep running towards him at the beginning, and when I believe he's close enough, I shoot him. It is easy to determine the necessary distance once you try a few times and get the hang of it. The very moment he gets hit, he jumps into the air, trying to land on your head. He is now on your right so naturally he jumps to the left. So I run to the right, making him land behind me or to the left of me, if you like. Then it's just the matter of turning back to him and firing, running 4 or 5 steps left, waiting for him to land, turning back to him, firing, running 4 or 5 steps to the right, waiting for him to land, etc... I believe it takes round 10 hits to kill him. Re: [Audyssey] help with pipe 2 blast chamber
Hi, you can get detailed instructions on how to play the electricity levels in the manual, but generally you should just not fit a pipe when the electricity sound comes from the same place as the flowing water. Just wait till the electricity moves to a different spot. You also get a "next slide is under electricity" warning sound which you shall learn in the learn game sounds menu to be able to recognize it. Whe you hear this, you know that you should care about the position of the electricity. It doesn't matter to you if you don't get this sound before fitting a pipe. Hi, yeah, thanks, now I see. I do not think there are any copies of the real book seven on the internet. DECEMBER 19 , 2006 The long lack of updates has been due to some very hard work. I'm now writing scenes that have been planned, in some cases, for a dozen years or even more. I don't think anyone who has not been in a similar situation can possibly know how this feels: I am alternately elated and overwrought. I both want, and don't want, to finish this book (don't worry, I will.) For years now, people have asked me whether I ever dream that I am 'in' Harry's world. The answer was 'no' until a few nights ago, when I had an epic dream in which I was, simultaneously, Harry and the narrator. I was searching for a Horcrux in a gigantic, crowded hall, which bore no resemblance to the Great Hall as I imagine it. As the narrator I knew perfectly well that the Horcrux was jammed in a hidden nook in the fireplace, while as Harry I was searching for it in all kinds of other places, while trying to make the people around me say lines I had pre-arranged for them. Meanwhile waiters and waitresses who work in the real café in which I have written huge parts of book seven roamed around me as though on stilts, all of them at least fifteen feet high. I've read it and it's brilliant, but I just simply need something to prove whether it's just an ingenious fanfiction or the true and official version by JKR, which I tend to believe less and less, anyway. I remember coming across an entry in the diary on jkrowling.com some time ago that should give me some light on this, but I can't seem to be able to find a way to view old diary entries, the last one is the only one visible. Just set a price, say 30 or 25 pounds, and charge the equivalent in every currency. So Americans would have to pay 60 or 55 respectively. The problem is that if you set a price that seems too high to most people, that you might get less sales, but that's a different story and it's up to you. :-) Lukas - Original Message - From: "damien c. sadler - head of x-sight interactive" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 5:05 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then? i'm confused. does that mean that i should charge £30 which means americans should have to pay $60? or should i charge £30, $30, C$30, A$30, or whatever regards, damien - Original Message - From: "Charles Rivard" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 4:00 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then? A pound of marshmallows? or a pound of mercury. Now, which takes up more space? See what I mean? Now, he's not going to charge a cubic foot of whatever your currency is. He's going to charge what amounts to a certain value. If a pound is worth fifty cents in American money, and the developer lives in America, he's going to charge 2 pounds, or $1 in American money because a pound is worth half as much as an American dollar. If a person in the UK earns 2 pounds per hour, and an American earns $1 doing the same job, then there's no problem. Everyone seems to be basing the potential price of a game on the numbers rather than the value. If the game costs $30 in American money, should someone in the UK get it for 30 pounds, which is a 50 percent discount, because 30 equals 30? No. It should cost the equivalent of $30 in American money, whether it is 60, 90, or however many of your units of money it takes. - Original Message - From: "william lomas" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 2:35 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then? hi that might be the best way. either way one or the other country will ahve to pay more so just say 30 pounds for example equals what, 40 dollars i guess but not sure why not in my view, get the game worked on, show us trailer etcetera and then if it is of a high enough quality we can take a vote perhaps on how much one would be prepared to pay in his or her currencty will On 16 Apr 2007, at 09:29, damien c. sadler - head of x-sight interactive wrote: > so what are you suggesting, that i make it 30 of whatever currency? > so if > someone pays in dollars they pay $30, or if they pay in pounds they > also pay > £30? > > regards, > > damien > > > > > - Original Message - > From: "Thomas Ward" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "Gamers Discussion list" > Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 3:11 AM > Subject: Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then? > > > Hi Damien, > How about setting your prices depending on the persons country or > currency? > You are right that since the Brittish pound currently has a higher > exchange rate than the dollar some gamers may not want to pay the > extra > exchange rate to equalise things. Or just a link from the downloads page directly to the sarah1.mp3 and sarah2.mp3 files besides the main page heading should be enough. Why not add it when you're gonna upload the next patch? Hi Talksina, actually I have nothing to contribute about such kind of multiplayer games but I can give you directions to several more online audiogames out there you've probably missed. First, there really is an open-source Tic-tac-toe by Philip Bennefall. ;) http://www.pb-games.com. Then there is Audioquake at: http://agrip.org.uk and finally Galaxy Ranger (Super Tennis, Super Football and Lords of the galaxy) by Vipgameszone, which can be found at: http://www.vipgameszone.com. [Audyssey] issue in Sarah was Re: hp question
Hi, s p o i l e r I don't know if you read the entire book yet but I believe Harry didn't know the charm at the time yet. And this brings me to something I've noticed that might be a possible bug in Sarah. Phil, you state in the manual that if Sarah drops her magic wand, she won't be able to focus her magical energy any more. I understand this so that she shouldn't be able to perform any spells that require the wand. So, although she should still be able to apparate, check her direction facing or perhaps perform the summoning charm, as I am sure they've performed that without wands in their hands in the HP series, she shouldn't be able to stupefy anyone or cast a patronus, etc. However, I can do all sort of magic even without a wand with no difficulty. I'm just making sure I understood everything right? Re: [Audyssey] game sounds menu - Re: bomb blaster then?
Hi, this is what he was in my opinion trying to say. An extremely contributive post, really. ;) You have such a thing on GMA games - a sound review. This seems to be one of the largest problems of the blind community when it comes tospelling. It seems that most blind Americans or modern members of western cultures in general don't pay much attention to their grammar, punctuation and sentence formulation skills at all. Many of them have never read or even studied how to read Braille, or have done so in extremely few rare cases, probably too lazy to change their mind, considering Braille to be something terribly outdated, difficult and exhausting to master, and too time consuming for their liking in this cool new age of all the hi-tech stuff out there. *sigh* Therefore, they haven't had the opportunity to collect the correct manner of spelling different words in their brain, even without a conscious thouht. This is a process everyone's brain performs when reading texts - you see where the author puts commas, semicollons and dashes, you see how this and that word is spelled, and your brain stores it in memory for later use, even when you're not aware of it. Now, when a speech synthesizer or another person reads everything aloud for you, you naturally don't have the chance to take advantage of this brain feature. :-) I don't say that I am a Braille reading master - I do read terribly slowly and it is certainly much less comfortable and much more difficult than using a screen reader, but I do know the system and do still use it some days. And even now, when I have a decent computer, I always try to pay attention to the spelling of every new word I come across that I'm uncertain about. And I believe even a spell checker could not fix most of these errors, as it is just a software like any other program with just a limited dictionary. For spell checkers, translators and most other software, the computers would be an artificially intelligent neural network in order to increase the effectiveness and use of the software. With this all said, I shouldn't post any more on this topic. I just felt this was something I had to express, but now as following this thread wouldn't probably result in a constructive and helpful discussion and doesn'T have that much to do with accessible games really, I don't encourage any replies here on this list. Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster then?
Hi, I personally like to experiment with the game when there's not a menu like this. Sometimes I even don't consult the sound index first, like in Hunter by BSC Games. So I wouldn't be bothered if it was included but it would probably be a nice challenge to release the game without such a feature. HOwever, telling whether it's needed in such game or not is almost impossible when I haven't seen it first. I believe he means to say that if he heard "snake, snake, snake", he'd think it's an enemy rather than a painting. However, I've already been there once but I'm not even sure if that thing makes a constant sound like a sweet, for example, or if you have to find it on your own by exploring the quite large room. That's right that most of us didn't bother to give you a thorough and patient explanation, while they still bothered to criticize you. I can also understand that you just wanted to express your excitement and that perhaps sort of overestimated the puzzle a bit, but you shall just place a spoiler warning there or stay quiet till the level of adrenaline in your blood decreases a bit. *smile* You see, someone not into HP was looking forward to figuring the puzzle on his own, and now that Nicol guy steps ahead and says: s p o i l e r (for those who perhaps didn't read the original message): You just have to enter Mirtle's bathroom, look for the snake painting on a basin, etc... It would be something like if I just wrote out of excitement: s p o i l e r Hey, folks, I've just realized that you have to use the . password on the portrait in the basement to get into the hufflepuff common room. Re: [Audyssey] the chamber of secrets
Such posts are really starting to annoy me. Yeah, now you read the book just a while ago and it feels perfectly easy to you. However, try to remember that there might be some who didn't read the series but still would like to play Sarah. Now you've just spoilt all the fun to them as they might have read your chatter by accident, even when they probably wouldn't want to. So what about contacting Phil privately or placing a s p o i l e r s p a c e warning? It doesn't take more than 6 or 7 seconds to type that. Re: [Audyssey] Sarah
Well, then you should make sure that you explore the entire ground floor and basement level. By the way, Phil, I don't know if there's any magical object limit needed to enter the dungeon, but I think there should be. If you need 7 objects to enter the first floor, then what is it good for when you can just enter the dungeon regardless of how many objects you've found if you want? ;) Thanks, Lukas - Original Message - From: "aaron danvers-jukes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 2:15 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Sarah >I did not get a map. > s > p > o > i > l > e > r > s > p > a > c > e > i think this is a cheat/bug. but it'll make the game especially hard if > you > remove it. > i went into the dungeon, and went to the sliverin common room. i checked > my > passwords. they were all there. i went back up the staircase, and > continued... > also, in the sliverin common room, i can't get that pot of glittering > pouder. i've tried every password. > any help will be appreciated. > thanks. > > > > ___ > Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] strictly based on the harry potter books
No, Sarah is not strictly based on Harry Potter. As far as I know, nobody made such a statement in public. Phil himsel mentions on his pages that "Sarah and the castle of witch craft and wizardry, inspired by the books of J. K. Rowling", but not "strictly based". It just means that Phil tried to take the best and most interesting and atractive challenges, puzzles and realms of the whole storyline and put them into the game. First, making the game a complete copy of the series would be almost impossible I think and it would also dramatically reduce the enjoyment one can have when playing it, and second don'T forget that you still have almost 5 books to read through to understand the whole complex story. If you wanted to resemble anything and everything in the game, you'd first have to work for many more years, and second, it would look awfully. Choosing any book or movie etc. as your source of inspiration is wonderful for the possibility to expand the original world of the story with your own ideas and thoughts. Hi, it's actually the ground floor, just for clarification. Even though it's the first level of the game, it's counted as ground floor and basement. It was probably clear enough to Aaron anyway but just for sure... Re: [Audyssey] Sarah
Hi, I'm not Phil but I believe you can. First it's a part of the GMA engine, and second there are places when you need to do it. For example, if you proceed from ground floor upwards and don't go to the dungeon, I believe you will have to return there sooner or later. The same goes for the chamber of secrets or the headmaster's tower, which can be both entered from the second floor. Hi, this could perhaps be considered as a s p o i l e r If you have gotten to the first floor, then I suppose you have gotten the map from Filch's office. Or rather you must have got it, or you wouldn't be able to proceed farther. And if you were able to locate the caretaker's office, then you just have passed that door that leads to the flute. Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts on Sarah
Hi, I don'T understand what on Earth could possibly force you to have to use any name against another. If your dad placed the order for ya, you still could use your name as the registration one. I did the same with my friend who let me use his credit card to purchase the game - of course I had to fill in his name as the credit card owner, otherwise the order wouldn't get processed successfully, I suppose, but I used my name as the registration one. The factor that is responsible for how the unlock code looks like is the four digit user code for the most part, I believe. The name just specifies the rest of the code but, anyway. So you could use Roonil Wazlib as the registration name, who cares? LOL Perhaps you will be able to make an arrangement with Phil to send you a new unlock code for your registration name, otherwise you'll just have to put up with your dad's name in the titlebar. :-) Take care, Lukas - Original Message - From: "aaron danvers-jukes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Monday, April 02, 2007 6:50 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts on Sarah > sarah: i actually love the voice acting, and i think it's good! i really, > really do! it's cool. > i've also noticed that there's an effect on the voice that makes it sound > like a teenager is talking. pitch change i suppose. i love using that for > dalek effects... hahahahaha. anyhow, that's not on the topic of this > subject. > i got my key for the game and am on the first floor. trouble is i did not > get the flute. hmmm. i don't know what to do about that. i want to explore > that chamber of the puzzles with the dog and devil snair and chessboard > (if > any) hopefully that devil snair thing is there though. > problem is, though, i had to use my dad's name as the registration name. > how > can i make it say "registered to aaron danvers-jukes" instead of the other > name? > thanks. > > > > ___ > Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Sarah navigation.
Hi, now I think about it, the flagrate spell would be a great feature. Imagine it like this - you would probably use this at a junction, so you'd paint the sign in the direction you're gonna take. So the next time you come to the spot and see your sing, you know - ah, yep, I've already been there. It could be handled in two ways: 1. After casting the spell, the engine would wait for you to choose a direction, then would save the information somewhere for later use. 2. You would manually select the direction right after using the spell. In both cases Sarah could probably say something like "flagrate east" or "sign east" etc. Seems like exactly what I was always dreaming of but was never able to put it into an exact idea. Hope you can do it like this, it would really blow me away! Re: [Audyssey] Sarah navigation.
Oh yeah, the room describer could be nice, but as a similar feature works on the most important rooms (it gives you info about the position of the exits but not about the size, which I don't really need), I don't really care about a more complex one. Now that I think about it, the remembral can pretty much serve the purpose of a marker. However then, something that could detect most objects at a much larger distance than just 5 feet without having to invoke the shift-D menu scan would be extremely useful, as well as perhaps increasing the volume of the snoring sound on most doors. Re: [Audyssey] a huge, huge bug in sarah!!!
That's it. If you don't know the creature was supposed to be a buggard, you could never recognize it for sure, as nobody has yet seen a buggard in it's own true form, if it even has any. Re: [Audyssey] a huge, huge bug in sarah!!!
This is a big spoiler but it doesn't change a lot, anyway. s p o i l e r s p a c e Hi, I don't know if you read the HP books, and if so, how carefully, but there is a creature called buggard (sorry for the misspelling). It usually hides in small, dark and closed places such as wardrobes or desks, but when someone opens their hideout and forces them to go out, they immediately take the shape of what the one facing them fears the most. So if you were scared to death of bees and you opened a wardrobe with a buggard in it, a big, evil and angry bee would fly out, attacking you right away. In the books Harry was most feared of dementors as they in fact resemble an esence of fear. They are hope suckers, they take away all your happyness, faith and happy memories, and finally, your soul if given the opportunity. So I guess Phil made Sarah feel the same about dementors. ;) The only known way to defeat a buggard is to use the ridiculus spell which will force him to look comical, as you can find out by listening to the spel description in the spell list. So if you step up to the cabinet and cast the ridiculus spell, you'll hear that it's really a buggard. HOwever, be careful - if you haven't opened the cabinet before, the buggard in the shape of a dementor will still appear. In fact, I believe the fake dementor comes out of the cabinet whenever you open it, as the buggard is still alive. I don't know if there's supposed to be a way to kill him definitely, at least I haven't found it yet. Even casting the ridiculus spell repetitively will do him no harm. Hope this helps, Lukas - Original Message - From: "nicol" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2007 11:49 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] a huge, huge bug in sarah!!! > Well, it makes the sound of a dementor because there is a sound of a > dementor in learn game sounds and that sound is exactly the same as the > creature that appears if you open the golden cabinet. > Also d tells you dementor. > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Behalf Of Karl > Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2007 12:08 AM > To: gamers@audyssey.org > Subject: Re: [Audyssey] a huge, huge bug in sarah!!! > > Oh no, that's no bug. > S > P > O > I > L > E > R > That's not really a dementor either. Re: [Audyssey] Sarah navigation.
Hi Phil, personally, I believe I would cope just with the ability to place markers. Something like the SOD object locator (working at larger distances than just 5 feet and producing continuous signals once an item appears in range) would also come in handy but I can do without it. The markers would however be fine, as sometimes the remembral simply isn't just enough. The room describer is not a feature I would really miss or need. Re: [Audyssey] way of escaping filtch and bug found
Hi Nicol, that sound at Filch's office is coming from behind the door. h i n t There is an item somewhere in the basement that, if activated, will reveal the sound to you. By the way, if you're gonna order the full game, you'll probably find the later floors even more confusing at first. I've already gotten to the third floor but that's just because I found the doors by random and they let me through even when I haven't found most of the objects. It would be a bit more pleasant if certain rooms weren't that large or if there were more orientation signs, or perhaps the ability to place a marker like in SOD. Re: [Audyssey] Sarah - missing magical object in chapter 1
Hi, thanks for clearing this. There were two incorrect assumptions that I have made: 1. That you needed the alohomora spell to unlock the first floor door, and as it didn't work, I thought I needed the last object for the door to let me through, and 2. that the second random headless hat didn't count as a magical item. Re: [Audyssey] Sarah - missing magical object in chapter 1
Hi all, this might be considered a slight spoiler to someone, so maybe you should read at your own risk. ;) Yeah, I've discovered that the penknife works on the door but I just believed there was something else to be found that might be useful later on in the game. The second broom from the hufflepuff common room doesn't seem to increase the count of found items, as well as the second headless hat I can sometimes find in the basement. Hi folks, I sent a similar message yesterday but I can't seem to have it delivered, so hopefully this one will get through successfully... I've been playing and messing around with the demo level of Sarah ever since the game has been released, and even more intensely since Thursday when I finally got my registration code, but I still don't get that darn last magical object that prevents me from entering the first floor through the first floor door. That's correct, that's what it's supposed to look like. If only you listened carefully to Phil's answer when you asked this question the last time, you would know that Phil simply didn't want to bother creating a new area type just for one room of the kind, so he used an office instead when he already had it set up. [Audyssey] quiet doors in Sarah
Hi folks, I've noticed a strange thing in the demo. Is that supposed to be like this, or is it a bug? I've located two doors that make no sound at all. I don't know where one of them is but I can give you directions to the other one. I wonder that maybe more doors like this can lead to that darn magical object I've always been missing to complete the demo. Now where the first door is, just so you can check it and see if they are quiet on your computer too. s p o i l e r s p a c e If you continue ahead past the broom cupboard door, you'll be able to see the ante chamber door on your left after a few steps. It leads to a room labeled office, and when I move across it, there's another exit that leads to the staircase down to the basement, the one which leads to the kitchen entrance. [Audyssey] Sarah order not visible in the shop account
Hi list, I've e-mailed the Draconis sales department concerning this same question but I thought maybe I could get an answer from here faster. A friend of mine just created a shop account using my data for the most part and purchased Sarah for me using his credit card. However, although he got a message about a successfully performed transaction from his bank and there were no errors when he submitted the order form, now, about 18 hours from the purchase, I still can't see it in my account. My order history says I have not yet made any purchases. So I just wanna make sure that nothing went wrong with the order, that it's just waiting for Josh to process it manually. I mean - do orders appear in the history only after they've been processed manually? I'm not complaining about the slowness of the process or anything (there must be loads of orders coming in these days), I just wanna make sure if it's normal that I can'T see the purchase yet. Thanks a lot, Lukas ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] opinions
Also, I don't think we were arguing your opinion. Yes, it's right that when someone presents an opinion that doesn't appeal to the others, they probably try to persuade him with their reasons, but I was actually expecting much more flames and insulting going when I saw that post of yours than occured, and that pleased me that I was wrong. You say everyone has the right for their opinion. That's definitely true. But that's also the reason why we even bothered to reply and to explain our own different opinions - cause they are just different. I myself don't think that old is better, nor do I think that new is better. I believe it's impossible to make a statement like this in general and still be objective and precise. You know, the original game is, well, old as you put it. But to us it's gonna be completely new. Like I said before, I believe you wouldn't look at it if you didn't know it was old. By the way, just out of curiosity, have you ever tried any of the already released Monty demos, or did you just give up cause it was too old? Thanks, Lukas - Original Message - From: "Raul A. Re: [Audyssey] Montezuma's Revenge News
Exactly, Charles. I believe that if you didn't know that this was supposed to be a remake of an old Atari game, it would simply blow ya away. But just because the original game sounds too old to you, you've made a negative judge about it. Re: [Audyssey] beat the demo?, or wait - Re: Sarah game freezing, and locking up.
Also, I think it's almost impossible to beat the demo (explore the entire level) within twenty minutes. Has anyone managed to do it? Although I think I know the location of everything that is somehow important in the level except that ante chamber door, I haven't managed going everywhere and picking up the magical objects needed within the limit yet. I have set this as a challenge for myself - to find all 10 objects or how many I am required to have and to find and unlock the first floor door in time. [Audyssey] Sarah - how not to get caught by Filch when entering his office?
Hi folks, the subject line says it all. I've been trying everything I can think of for two days to enter his office and get the map without ending the game, but nothing worked. I even tried using the patronus together with a headless hat and the incendio spell and to fly inside on the broom - just whatever non-sense I could think of. No good. I'm starting to get frustrated. Please, can anyone gime a hint or clue as to how to trick Filch to let me be? Only once did I manage to find his office empty and that was just lady fortune liking me for a while, I suppose. Re: [Audyssey] trouble downloading sarah
Hi Nicol, well, I could probably recommend Free download manager. In my opinion, it combines the best and most useful features of the more famous mainstream managers out there. You can find it at: http://www.freedownloadmanager.org Or you could use Mozilla Firefox as your web browser instead of MS IE. To me, it's much better in many ways than IE. It's more stable, confident and user-friendly, and best of all, it's free and simple enough to use. It also has a pretty nice in-built download manager which is capable of the same advantages of dedicated download managers over IE. Not just Download Accelerator, but any other decent download manager or web browser such as Free Download Manager or Mozilla Firefox. IE downloads each file in only one threat, while these programs do use four separate threads by default, increasing the final download speed more or less by four times in the result. Re: [Audyssey] sarah game registration
Hi, understand that the ordering process and registration code generation is split up between three developers. Draconis processes the order, Phil gets the money and then GMA is asked to generate the code, and they send it back to Phil. In fact, considering all this, I am surprised that so many people have already apparently gotten their full versions when the game has been out for like three days. Re: [Audyssey] Sarah impressions and questions
Hi, yeah, you've really done a great job mixing the game sounds, and Sarah did a wonderful acting. Even most of the synthesized voices sound reasonable enough. Just cool! I didn't say I didn'T read HP books, but I just read the Czech translations. And certain names or expressions, even some charms etc. were simply translated so that the words have nothing to do with the original, even etimologically. So I often have to guess and sometimes I remember the thing from Half blood prince which I in fact read in English but it was in a rush as I was at a friend of mine at that time, so I couldn't really translate or remember everything. I know about the apparation. At first I thought I must have hit a by accident right at the beginning of the game and that got me into the broom cupboard. But I realized it wasn't the case. I just start the game up and everything runs as usual, except that the game says I am in the broom cupboard when I hit w - however, no sounds can be haard (I mean no ambient sounds or distant sounds of creatures etc.), and there are walls all around me, blocking in all directions. And the scan brings me nothing. The same goes for the creatures. There is just noone and then, immediately, all of a sudden, without any warning, there is Peeves next to me. I understand the ghosts like getting in touch with me, as I am the lovely miss intruder, but well, it doesn't feel so pleasant to me... :-D Other than that, and the fact that I seem to have gotten lost, a really great game that simply blows me away! Although I can imagine that it wouldn't appeal so much to someone who hasn't read the books at all. Thanks for the answers. And, by the way, as I downloaded the game like 30 minutes after the release was announced, and then patched it yesterday, I doubt I have an earlier beta. *smiles* Take care and beware of the caretaker, Lukas - Original Message - From: "Phil Vlasak" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Monday, March 19, 2007 5:25 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Sarah impressions and questions > Hi Lukas, > It almost sounds like you have an earlier beta since I fixed some of the > things you talked about. > Playing the game without reading the HP books would be challenging but not > impossible. > For example the portrait in the basement is a character that died in the > sixth book and she was known to be in the Hufflepuff house. > So I had her guard the Hufflepuff door and you need to use the Helga > password since that was Hufflepuff's first name to get in. > The trick step works at random and trips you up some of the time. > The fireplaces and windows and hour glasses are there for orientation and > atmosphere reasons. > So are the suits of armor but on later levels you may find them moving > around blocking you. > I don't think there is a distance to the stun spell but I will check it > out. > After a while you will get to know if a ghost voice is a certain loudness > then it is getting close. > I use the control d key to check if the nearest creature is getting closer > without having to do anything else. > You can also hit shift d to get a menu of the objects and ghosts around > you > and at what direction and how fare away. > > You enter the broom cupboard by hitting the a key if you have any apparate > spells left. > This is like the teleport in Shades of Doom. > The lock door spell can be used on a few doors but since nothing should > get > into the broom cupboard but you I did not put it on that door. > I enjoyed making up what I would imagine would be the sound like the > Apparition spell where I combined a rubber balloon stretching and a gun > shot > that echoes. > I thing Sarah did a very good job reading the lines of text I sent her and > made the game more human and less synthesizer sounding. > Phil > > - Original Message - > From: "Neo" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "Gamers Discussion list" > Sent: Monday, March 19, 2007 9:51 AM > Subject: [Audyssey] Sarah impressions and questions > > >> Hi Phil, >> I've just tried out the Sarah demo, and I must say that I honestly didn't >> even dare to expect a game of such brilliance, complexity, beauty and >> perhaps realism (if it's at all possible to put it this way) like the one >> you've produced! [Audyssey] Sarah impressions and questions
Hi Phil, I've just tried out the Sarah demo, and I must say that I honestly didn't even dare to expect a game of such brilliance, complexity, beauty and perhaps realism (if it's at all possible to put it this way) like the one you've produced! I am surprised, pleased, amazed, stuned... Even without a stuning spell. :-) I believe the developers of the mainstream HP rubbish games should learn a load from you. Now, if only I had enough money and a way to buy it, I would go ahead immediately. HOwever, I also have several curious questions, and no, please, don't advise me to find the answers in a textbook. I'm not Hermione! :-D 1. I can never seem to manage to stun any character. Is there any general distance between me and the creature for the spell to succeed? I know I must be facing in the right direction, naturally. Also, the characters seem to move a bit too quickly for my liking, even on the easy difficulty. There's noone around at one moment, and a second later I get touched by Peeves or the Basilisk. And that darn cat is just too fast so I can never stun her, nothing seems to scare her, and she always calls her personal caretaker soon enough who gets me before I can even recognize he's there, but I guess I'll just have to get used to the creatures' speed. :-) And, by the way, when Filch is a caretaker, why don't you tell him to put or hang orientation signs all around the castle, or at least the ground floor and basement, so that I can at least know where the heck I'm goin'? LOL 2. Often times I appear in the broom cupboard instead of the entrance hall when the game starts. I suppose that's just a nasty little bug? 3. Sometimes it's difficult for me to figure out what an item is, as I've never read the HP books in English and certain expressions are pretty special. :-) Are the hour glasses, fireplaces, windows and the suit of armour of any use? Also, I can't realize what I am supposed to do with the huge bottle with a cork and with the portrait, but that might just need a bit more time. I found a piece of string in the office and when I tried to use it at the bottle and the portrait, something just happened, but I can't get the point of it. 4. What should the vanishing step do? I've tried stepping on it countless times, but nothing ever happened. I mean, I guess it shall just play the sound of stepping on the vanishing step as the step disappears under my foot, but I can never make this happen. 5. Does the coloportus charm work on any door, or is it there just for certain challenges? I tried to seel the broom cupboard door with it in fear of a nasty creature stealing the items I might store in there, but I wasn't successful. 6. Is there any other way to get off the broom rather than dropping it and then picking it up again with the up password? Well, these would be enough for now, but don't calm down too much - more will no doubt follow. :-) Anyway, thanks in advance for any answers, and once again my most sincere thanks for one of the best accessible games ever released. Re: [Audyssey] any suggestions?
Yep, Technoshock was quite difficult for me to manage, too. In fact, I didn't quite complete even the first store and it didn't entertain me enough to want to proceed. But TH and SOD that you mentioned are something different. To me, they were entertaining enough to give me motivation, even when SOd (which I can play at a friend) was my very first audiogame and I found it incredibly difficult to learn how to play it all at once. I could not remember the base layout, I didn't know how to use the tools that should help you with the orientation, I didn't target the monsters accurately. It took me hours until I was able to kill that mutant human with a semy-automatic bolt gun behind that locked door at the end of area 1. There probably is really no other hint than to keep trying, believing, wanting and experimenting. :-)) Don't let the unsuccessful attempts frustrate you. It's just one of the few most complex audiogames out there (SOd and TH), so it won't be anything easy, especially when you have not much experience with these games yet. Re: [Audyssey] any suggestions?
Hi, after all, Shades of Doom is not that complex, at least in the first levels. The Treasure Hunt's maze opens wide right on you and surprises you since the very beginning and yes, I believe that it can be quite difficult to move around it and not get lost when you had not learned it yet. And especially to determine where to go at all. Once you know it though, it's pretty simple. Shades of doom is not that strict to beginners. In fact, there is just one single way to follow at the start, and you virtually cannot get lost in area 1. All those complex games as you say are all about imagination, courage and experimenting. Just feel free to give it some time and don't be scared that you could ke killed or lost. After all, it's just a game in the first place, so theres nothing easier than to give it another try and perhaps be more successful this time. :-) Anyway, could you describe your problem a bit more accurately? Currently, I can't see what could possibly trouble you, or maybe I'm just unable to imagine how to help you at first. Re: [Audyssey] Allen Maynard's boxing game
It might be difficult to learn everything at first, but there is an intuitive pattern that is easy to follow after a certain amount of practice. And I guess this level of complexity was exactly what the author has determined.
