[Audyssey] correction on possible downtime and moderation queues.

2017-03-05 Thread Shane Davidson

Hello all,

As a correction to the downtime message sent on the 2nd, I miss-read the
dates, and as long as cards behave, we shouldn't experience any downtime
and if we do it shouldn't be long as I'll be home hopefully either on or
just after the date of domain renewal to solve any issues.
Also, I do see we have pending messages, I'll take care of those in the
morning when I'm at a keyboard.

Thanks.

[Audyssey] possible downtime.

2017-03-02 Thread Shane Davidson

Hello all,

This list may experience downtime for about a week as the domain comes
up for renewal tomorrow and the card my registrar has on file is not a
valid card, and paypal doesn't have the $15 in it immediately available
to me. So I haven't forgotten I just need to get home to my actual
computer where those cards are encrypted to.

THanks.

John,

I've e-mailed you privately about this, please respond when you have
time, to say I'm disgusted is an understatement, but to summarize Cpanel

your hosting provider and they are not impressed. They're only question
is why do we care? It's not our hardware and storage space, we actually

[Audyssey] vacation alert, July 16-31, 2016.

2016-06-22 Thread Shane Davidson

Hello all,

This is just a quick heads up to everyone that starting July 16, 2016
until the 31st or even August 1st, depending, I will be unavailable to
moderate with my usual level of vigger. It does not mean you start
acting silly and clearly violating the rules. Even though I won't be
around every single day reading, someone will be watching, and I will
find out, eventually so please, behave yourselves during that time so I
can enjoy my time away. I don't want to have to interrupt my vacation to
deal with stupidity because someone thought they could violate the rules
while I was away.

Have a great day all.

Here is a copy of the announcement.

btw, I keep trying to forward the choiceofgames e-mails to the list

[Audyssey] the future of this list and the audyssey domain.

2016-03-04 Thread Shane Davidson

Hello all,
When Thomas went into the hospital some month's ago I was tasked with
moderation of this list, but the day-to-day operations and maintenance
fees associated with keeping the list alive were still his responsibility.
With his passing, it falls to me as the one that was in charge to decide
next steps for this really really awesome list and how we wish to
proceed from hear on out. But since their are so many members on this
list, I look to you, the membership for your ideas and suggestions.
Running a list of this size requires time, (of witch I have plenty of),
and financial cost both for archive disk space, downloads that may be on
audyssey and bandwidth for it all.

SO I look forward to your suggestions and ideas.
Sincerely,
Shane Davidson

Jim had a bleeding ulcer, and he started bleeding internally and lost

Well basically the way the unlocks work is by earning awards at difficulties
of hard or greater, see
http://www.tresebrothers.com/star-traders-player-guide/ for the full list.
I must confess since I was having so much trouble with the game I did buy
the unlock, which is bad and will try to earn more awardsbut while it's
helped with several things such as a better starting ship, it's not solved
the problem I'm having with faction ranks.

Maybe I should down grade from normal to easy :d.

Just for people on this list, as of yesterday Star traders rpg from trees
brothers games is now accessible on Ios and can be found on the ap store.
It's got a nav helper accessed through the menue which gives you a list of
planets to travel to, which works well.

I'm still figuring out the game and how everything works, but I like what
I've seen thus far, certainly worth the three dolars for the elite version,
although there is a free version as well (I bought the elite straight off
since this is just my sort of game).

The game is sort of similar to smugglers or core exiles in that you fly
around with a spaceship, there are a number of factions who have wars, you
have a crew and engage in space combat. The difference is that the universe
is rather like the dune books by Frank herbert, galactic houses and
politics along with sindicates, there are lots of different things to do,
exploring planets, lots of ship combat, boarding and capturing ships and a
lot more, indeed I'm only just starting on the game myself.

one thing that I do like the look of is that rather than you just grinding
away at the same resource trading, you actually need to research where
things are needed for yourself, which makes the game quite unique, as does
the fact that while there ar elots of ships and upgrades to buy and awards
to earn, the game is pretty open ended.

It looks highly interesting and I'd advise any rpg fans to give it a try.

Beware the grue!

[Audyssey] a message from this lists hosting provider.

2013-12-15 Thread Shane Davidson
Hello;

My name is Shane Davidson, owner of the company that provides hosting
services for both the Audyssey and USAGames interactive websites.

My staff became aware both yesterday and early this morning of some very
despicable behavior by one member, (or x-member, this is yet to be
determined). This individual was posting hateful, difamitory, and sexually
harassing messages, posing as other valid and upstanding list members who
have been apart of the blind gaming community for years as gamers,
developers and as interested parties.

We take this very seriously, and on behalf of my company, and this lists
management, I extend my most heartfelt apologies to each and every one of
you.

I have requested, and obtained the cooperation of the underlying service
provider that was providing this individuals vehicle to become a royal pain,
Linode LLC. Who have assured me that they are taking steps to stop this
behavior immediately.

I have also opened a ticket on behalf of Thomas Ward, who owns both Audyssey
and USAGames interactive, in our own support system so we can more easily
track this issue.

We are working diligently to bring this to an end, and please don't leave
over this.

Thank you for your patience and time.

Sincerely;

Shane Davidson

here's what I just posted in the form of an audioboo, which I think I should
throw out here as well... I don't have the $75 myself. The BSC games, I
think, were a big part of what made audiogames are today, and that we should
preserve them for newcomers to the audiogame idea and let those that legally
bought the games be able to play them on new computers they might own. SO I
think we should all throw something like
$5 and eventually I think we can get the $75 we need. Then someone with the
server space can host everything. Now I realise this isn't exactly right and
why people didn't do this with, say, the NVDA vocalizer driver which is
still available for purchase, but considering all of these games are just
going to disappear completely in mid May I seriously think we should do
this. It does look like no one I know currently has the money to do this on
his/her own, and if no one takes advantage of the offer, the games will just
disappear. And even though there are cracks for the newer games (might as
well admit it since bs will close), the older editions of pipe and troup,
and the word games don't have one, neither does the software so that will
just leave them unplayable for many people.

People want to learn?
Lives wouldn't be unfair, it's a mainstreaming gaming stratigy, and you
don't here the millions of mainstreaming gamers complaining, do you?
Thought not.
If Jeremy implimented lives, it would add, in my opinion, another level of
stratigy, to how you can keep those lives, or recover them quickly if you
die.
Yes, if you lose all your lives, you start over with the basics, and rep you
had when you lost your last set of lives, no I don't like just cloaning
standards, call it poetic license, lol, , but you are reverted to the ax and

Just my thoughts.

My thoughts, death on missions is no more harsh than anywhere else,
especially considering what you stand to gain if you survive, as compared
with the comparable time looting. I completely disagree with any change
that waters down the already weakened consequences of dying, especially when
you stand to gain for five minutes of survival rep and experience that would
take hours of looting to gain. Big risk, big reward. Too risky, don't go
on missions.

And by the way, I say this who am trying to learn some new styles of play
and thus am dying quite frequently, and have certainly lost 20,000 rep worth
of equipment at various times. I'd favor a lives system, where once your
lives are gone you start over from zero. Perhaps gaining a level gives you
a new life. I know this won't be adopted as too many people would shriek
about it being unfair, never mind that it's a gaming standard in the
mainstream world.

You may use team talk and connect to

TCP and UDP port: 10331
the channel is simply called swamp.
download teamtalk if you don't have it at

Hi,

Holy cow! Yeah, that would be an excellent reason for the game not to work
for him. As I recall Jaws 4.02 had problems with Windows command prompt
support. Later versions have obviously fixed this issue as I'm not having
any issues with Jaws 13 and the game. Another classic case of why the "if it
ain't broke don't fix it" attitude comes back to bite the person in the end.

Cheers!

Hi Philip,

Actually, it seems that only 64-bit voices works with Perilous Harts on
64-bit versions of Windows 7. I noticed if I forced a 32-bit voice like
Acapela Heather using the 32-bit control panel as default Perilous Harts
crashed. However, if I set a 64-bit voice such as Microsoft Anna as default
no problems at all. This problem isn't unusual with SAPI enabled
applications on Windows 7.

I'm not the one that maintained the accessible_output module for python

This is beyond the scope of this lists topic of discussion, so I'd recommend

Hi Shane,

Mind telling me where you got that dll and API documentation? I've done
everything but put a gun to Dolphin's head and they refuse to give me any
information until I sign an NDA agreement, and still haven't gotten anything
in the mail to sign. I use to think Freedom Scientific were jerks but
Dolphin is definitely worse. Freedom Scientific sent me their API docs
within a couple of days without an NDA agreement. SO I would like to know
how you came buy that info.

I would suggest buying a USB mouse or something cheap and easy to let you
play the game. Being lazy in my opinion as no excuse to miss out on such a
great game. IN other words, it's really worth using the mouse. You won't
regret it once you get the knack of doing it.

Subject: [Audyssey] question about input methods for swamp

Hi list.
I guess this question has been asked before, but is there a way I can play
swamp without the mouse?
I realise that the mouse is more accurate than keyboard navigation, however
I am playing on a laptop, and so only have a track pad.
also, I can easily see myself clicking outside the window and opening other
stuff on the computer, plus, I guess I am just lazy and would rather use the
keyboard.
perhaps some alternative keystrokes could be added such as control for
firing your gun etc, of course I guess movement will be a bit of a problem
given the arrow keys control radar functions, but I would really rather use
the keyboard for navigation and firing of weapons.
I just had a thought, perhaps alt and the arrow keys could be added in to
allow for navigation with the keyboard. so alt and up could move you
forward, alt and down could move you back, and alt left and right could side
step you.

Subject: [Audyssey] Perilous Hearts preorders?

Hi all,

I'm really very happy with the response I received for the game audio demo
of Perilous Hearts, and so I wanted to ask the community a question. Would
you consider placing a preorder for this game if the possibility was there?
I know that the history of game preorders has been rocky in this community,
but the difference in my case would be that you would agree to a small
contract before ordering that basically would say:

1. You get a slightly discounted rate when you preorder.

2. We give you a definite release date. If the game is not released on this
exact date or earlier, within a 24 hour period, you are entitled to a full
refund.

3. You would not have any kind of special privilege when it comes to
requesting feature x, but I would certainly pay more attention to
suggestions from preorder users provided that I personally thought they were
good ones.

Naturally, if I went down this root I would put up a playable demo of the
game at the same time as I made preordering available. This would not
include all the cut scenes etc that the finished game will contain and it
would still use Sapi, but the game play would stretch as far as level 2
which is where the real demo will also end.

The reason I am considering this is because the funds for the game are
running out, and so I cannot justify spending a lot more money on it out of
my own pocket. But if I had some money from preorders I would be able to
invest that to make the game the best it can possibly be.

I would very much appreciate feedback on this.

Thanks!

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Hi,

No kidding. I've tried really hard to produce a decent product, and
yes there have been unforeseen setbacks like this one that knocks us
off schedule. Its definitely not something to joke about. To modify an
old expression, "stuff happens."

Ironically, after I sent this post I tried to compile beta 18 and
experienced some of the same bugs so it would appear the problem is in
the engine, IE the core, and not the game source itself. So I looked
and bingo there was a line of code I copied from the cross-platform
version of the engine in there which was calling the UpdateGameState()
function when it shouldn't be and it totally threw the timing out of
wack. I removed it, recompiled the library, and linked it into beta 20
and several bugs vanished at once. However, there are still a few bugs
I've got to track down, but it would appear this situation isn't as
bad or hopeless as I first thought. The upside is that instead of two
or three weeks maybe I can release beta 21 in a couple of days.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] CASTAWAYS SUGGESTION.

2011-07-20 Thread Shane Davidson
hello;
a quick suggestion for castaways.

For those of us who have high quality, or other non Microsoft SAPI voices,
might I suggest you build SAPI support into the game, meaning, in the game,
you can set the voice you can use, apart from the default provided by
Windows.
I'm using windows 7 64bit, and even with other non microsoft voices
installed, the tts portion of the control panel never sees them.
Other applications like vipmud, JAWS, etc. see them, but windows itself?
Nope, not happening.
Unless I'm doing something wrong?
Hense my suggestion.
Thanks.

Hi Dark,

Yeah, a game like Lone Wolf with a Star Trek theme would totally rock.
At one time I had started on one using the USS Defiant, but the project got
ditched or put off because at the time I had just taken over Montezuma's
Revenge and Raceway, and all the games I was working on in 2005/2006 ended
up getting put on the back burner.

Now, as for Elite Force its not as odd or strange as you might think.
Let's use Elite Force I which I know best since I've played it a lot with
sighted help.

Basically, it takes place on USS Voyager while they are still in the Delta
Quadrant. Tuvock has just assembled an elite force of Star Fleet officers
called the hazard team to handle dangerous and specialized missions for
Voyager. The first level has the team in training on the holodeck where you,
playing as Ensign Monro, must rescue the hazard team from a Borg cube.
Pretty awesome mission for the first three levels.

On level 4 Voyager is attacked by an alien ship, the warp core is damaged,
and Lieutenant Torres reports to the bridge that Voyager's warp core is
about to blow. Janeway orders the hazard team, you, to head down to
engineering and repair the warp core.

In level 5 Voyager encounters a group of aliens from the Alpha quadrant who
were braught to the delta quadrant by the scavengers.
They attack Voyager, board her, and the hazard team is called in to clear
the ship of the scavengers and restore it back to law and order.

Eventually, the game finally gets around to the real story were Voyager and
a Borg ship are captured by the Forge. The hazard team must land on the
Forge base and blow it up so Voyager can leave.

Basically, like I said it is like a series of miniepasodes where you as
Ensign Monro get to carry out several missions and lead a team of Star Fleet
officers against various enemies. There are a lot of non-cannon characters
in the game, for the game's sake, but there are also the regular stars in
it. Tuvock, Janeway, Chakotay, Torres, etc are all there played by the same
stars as the tv shows which makes it like a playable tv show. The only
complaint is they didn't get Jarri Ryan to reprise her roll as Seven of
Nine. They had someone who kind of sounded like Jarri Ryan, but wasn't her,
playing Seven, and well that kind of sucked. However, all I think you would
like it if you could play it.

Cheers!

Hi,

Its actually a bit more serious than that. I changed the way the G3D Engine
handles window events, polls them, and unfortunately if you change windows
wwhile the game is running etc the window will not get updated when it has
focus again and will stop responding. Similar things will happen if you
launch it and for some reason the window doesn't get focus immediately.
However, alt+tabbing away and back will be the quickest way to hang the
program.

Re: [Audyssey] USA Games Website Status

2011-06-29 Thread Shane Davidson
Incompitence? That's the polite way of putting it.
We're still to this hour recovering and every once in awhile you here
someone in this office cursing dream host left and right.
Nobody's pleased and it's not pritty.
So in a nut shell, you here dream host, run, the *other* way.

Hi,

Well, like I said I didn't have any say in the matter. Dreamhost was
subcontracted for a number of Skynet's accounts and their monumental screw
up not only effected me but a number of other Skynet's clients.
Needless to say after the screw up Skynet no longer subcontracts with
Dreamhost, and many of the accounts, including USA Games, are now safely
back on Skynet's personal machines and not subcontracted out to Dreamhost.
I've made it very clear if anything like this happens again USA Games is
walking and locating someone else. This situation is beyond screw up and in
competence on Dreamhost's part.

Cheers!

I'm just seing this and it's reply so I'll say this.
As someone that works full time as well, I understand liam's position, and
cursing and swearing isn't going to get things done any faster.
Liam will in his own time get the games/patches out, and you'll just have to
have patience and wait.
This audio gaming business will never replace a full time job, and I agree
whole heartedly with liam's centiments.

Have a good day.

[Audyssey] top speed 2 community?

2008-07-14 Thread Shane Davidson
Hello all,
I don't post here much, but I do read each and every message that comes across
the list, but due to the mass amount of mail I get i can't get around to
writing much.
Anyhow, onto the content of my message.
I have gotten back into top speed 2, but i can't find the documentation to
create cars and tracks, and the community at:
http://community.playinginthedark.net

doesn't seem to be around anymore, and that's where i got a lot of my cars,
tracks, and other documentation to create the cars and tracks.
Does anyone have or know where i can obtain the information I need to create
cars and tracks, and where i can get more cars and tracks for topspeed2?
thanks for any assistants that can be offered.
sincerely,
Shane Davidson

[Audyssey] monkey term question

2008-04-10 Thread Shane Davidson
I'm playing around with setting up a few triggers for a mud I'm playing, using
monkey term as the client.
their are certain instances where instead of jaws talking, I want SAPI to
speak, I.E. when the computer on a starship says something.
We know the computer talks, because it's always proceeded by a set of text,
I.E. a female bvoice says, or something like that, then whatever it said.
I don't want to here "a female voice sys" I want that to be silent, but
whenever that comes up, I want sapi just to read what it said.
If tihs is meant for a different list, I sincerely apologize, but this was my
first shot, and I apologize again if this is O.T.

[Audyssey] holo trek

2008-04-09 Thread Shane Davidson
Ok folks,
Some of you may remember when holo trek used to be the like most popular Mud
game around, you had people developing sound packs, it was the talk of the town.
I was bored, and am seriously considering reentering the holotrek world.
I am wondering therefor if anyone has the following still hanging around, or
where I might be able to snag copies of this stuff.
The holotrek sound packfor I believe it was GMud32 and i think it was slightly
modified to make the star trek computer speak through sapi, or was that the
sound pack for monkey term,I forget.
Either of those would be appreciated, either the sound pack for monkey term or
GM32.
Also, I've lost the free scripts for GMud 432 thatused ot be hanging around,
anyone got?
Thanks all.

[Audyssey] hunting for the audyssey zip file.

2008-01-30 Thread Shane Davidson
Hey folks,
I've been playing audyssey magazine catch up.
I can't seem to find a place to get the zip file containing all past issues up
to the current published issue.
Darren's zip file is sorrily out of date. grin.
It only has issues 1 to 43.
I have up to 48 but I would like to have issues 49 to the present in .txt form.
I'm willing to also host a home for audyssey once I have all current issues in
my posession.
Thanks.

Subject: [Audyssey] Game programming education project.

Hi all,
In the interest of everyone who wants to begin learning how to program
accessible games I will be launching the USA Games game programming
education project. What I plan to do is write an accessible version of
Asteroids complete with saving and restoring games, standard and arcade
style play, sound, music, etc... Once written I will be able to post the
full source code and release versions for download.
The source version will eventually include documentation explaining the
audio class and it's use with Microsoft DirectSound. Another tutorial might
cover working with Visual Studio Express 2005, and another might discuss
saving and restoring games, etc. I don't plan for all of this suddenly to
appear, of course, but if I put some time to it each week those of you out
there will not only have a free game, but one with a full source written in
C#.NET which will give you something to look at and to practice your
programming skills with.
The main reason I have decided to do this is I would like the community at
large to have not only accessible games, but high quality accessible games.
Most new programmers don't know how to do that. For instance, most
programming books won't tell you how to save and restore a game, and you
have to compile the information from two or more sources, and understand
serializing an object. With a sample right in front of you it becomes pretty
clear how it is done without all the explanations how it works just that it
does work. Which is what we all want.
Not only that there is always some trig equations needed to calculate the
distance between objects, directions, and updating there location.
Well, naturally I will be including them, and I will keep things at the
Algebra/Trig level and won't put to much on you newbies by making everything
3D with vectors, and all that.
Anyway, if you guys think this will help the community add new programmers
to the rank, and help you guys learn I will be happy to donate time in the
future to this end ever.
Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about Montezuma's Revenge.

2006-09-29 Thread Shane Davidson
Hello michael sarah et al,
All I'd like to say is this,
Please complete the game as a 2D Side Scroller, that's what it's supposed to
be, so please make it that way, please?
It's a game I'd love to play, and have enjoyed playing the public alpha
release, and I can't wait for the entire game to be released.
So, Please leave it as a 2Dside scroller.
thanks.

I second that motion, I'm sorry, but this guy doesn't deserve the
time of day if you ask me.
I don't care, he's ripping off developers who've worked long and hard

If I'm stepping out of line by saying that he should be banned and
not allowed to be on this list anymore, then tell me, but I think a

Re: [Audyssey] About the next issue

2006-07-06 Thread Shane Davidson
ron;
I've got one thing to say to you, take, care, of, yourself, first!
As raul stated earlier, your family and personal life is way more
important then a free magazine.
We can wait, get yourself straightened around, and back on your feet,
and then get the issue out.
If it takes you a bit, then as the saying goes, so be it!

Re: [Audyssey] The Final Conflict

2006-07-04 Thread Shane Davidson

>Hey tom;
Shane here, I've been playing with monty a lot, and it's fun, now,
those stupid walls, need to go die die die die die!
I jumped, and I died!
I'll have to see if I can reconstruct a better report, but let's just
say, I went to jump over something, I jumped, and I died!
No fun!
smile!
Keep up the great work on both games.
thanks
shane
