Now I wish to put the question out, what games would you like to see? I plan to create mainly adventure games with a plot and characters, coupled together with the same audio work and fast paced game play that you saw in Q9. Do you wish for more sidescrollers, or is 3d the next step do you think? I would not wish to create a full 3d environment like in Shades of Doom where you spin around in degrees as I personally find these rather difficult to navigate and end up spending more time trying to remember where I've been and where I am supposed to go next, rather than enjoying the game. So I would adopt the method where you sidestep, moving one step in each direction for each press of either of the four arrow keys. Would you folks like to see something like this, or do you all want more sidescrollers? Unfortunately, I seem to no longer have a play.net account, which is where dragonrealms and gemstone IV are located! grin But anyway, here is a copy of a message I sent to the list regarding logging into gemstone IV with vipmud. I know the question is regarding dragonrealms, but I am sure that other than the difference in host names, the instructions would be the same. The below message talks about logging into the website as if you were going to login with the Wizard client. What you will want to do though is download the .sal file that comes up when you click on the go play link. The only way I was able to download this .sal file without Internet explorer trying to launch the wizard front end, was to use fire fox. That is why in the below message, I refer to firefox. You could probably stop the wizard frontend from launching if you disable active X for the dragonrealms.net site. Use the below at your own risk. Beings that it is the Christmas Holiday, I will be away from my computer for most of the next few days. I would suggest that you do a search in the play.net forums regarding logging in with a telnet client, that was where I originally got the instructions. Basicly, what you will need to do is get the userKey from the .sal file of your character. This is how simutronics keeps people from logging in for free. When you use vipmud to connect to whatever the host and port are, you will not see anything when you connect. This is normal. You will need to paste in the user key into vipmud's window and press enter. Again, you will see or hear nothing. You then want to type FE/JAVA all in caps as shown and press enter. You should then be good to go. Again, this is for gemstone IV but it will work with whatever dragonrealms uses as their host. Rest assured, Simutronics muds including dragon realms can be played with vipmud, at least, they could be played a few months ago. grin Jeremy Begin message. Ok, I managed to just get into gemstone iv with VipMud. What I had to do was use firefox to log into my account. When I clicked the go play button, a page came up saying that if my browser didn't launch using active x to click here. When I did, firefox brought a file save dialog with my character's .sal file, ie, grogrond.sal. I then saved it to disc, and opened it in notepad, and copied the key to the clipboard, and used the host of prime.gs4.game.play.net and the port of 4900 entered into the host and port sections in vipMud. Not a problem. You also might want to try a registry error fixer. Probably won't work though. Download Registry XP from the JFWLite homepage: http://jfwlite.com/programs/ and download the CCleaner cleaning tool, to use registry just open up the program and hit enter on the registry button. http://CCleaner.com/ Hope this helps -- although it probably won't - Original Message - From: "dark" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, October 11, 2009 5:04 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Crysis! Well, I certainly know where to get a spare xp install cd if I need one, my mum has one and apparently my friend who's a software designer can get them easily from his work. thanks for the advise about Ie Tristan, but my main concern is the system restore business. That default accout seems to let me access practically everything on my pc, and thus I was able to back up the last two weeks worth of stuff sinse I last backed up. sinse though it sounds as if it's a registry problem with that user account, I'm wondering if it might be possible to just delete that account and using the default, create a new one. User accounts are pretty much the spawm of satan I happen to think, sinse every single major problem i'm had with a computer has involved errors with them. why you can't just disable the bloody thing! While a complete reformat wouldn't be a desaster, even if my pc had literally exploded! it wouldn't have been a desaster, as I backup regularly, I'd just rather save all the reconfiguring and reinstalling if I possibly can, not to mention having to pester various developers and companies for extra registration keys. With my Compaq laptop I have to install Vista from a product recovery partition already present on the laptop's hard drive. Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!
Hi Dark, I will outline the steps you will need to take, if you can use that ("secondary") user account to full capacity: 1. Since Outlook Express is part of the Internet Explorer 6 package, you will have to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, or in your case you may have to downgrade from IE 7 or 8. Here is the link to download Internet Explorer + Outlook Express 6.0 SP 1 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx 2. SSave the download and try to run it on the secondary user account. Lets hope this works... (And do not, fiddle around with anything during the install/downgrade process :-p) Hope this helps. can definitely look into making some sort of Dragon Slayer Games legacy thing. I could fix up the games -- Tony sent me the source of them. For one thing I don't think they should have used MIDI music files. Anytime the MIDI ended and started over the game would hang just long enough for you to die. Not to mention the control scheme left a lot to be desired. They had a lot of potential but they quit before they could really explore it. In terms of actual game content goes Dragon Slayer Games never created anything of note. All of their games are what I would classify as practice games. Every developer in the world writes a few programs purely for practice, proof of concept, and obviously some of those early practice programs aren't very good. That's kind of how I see Dragon Slayer Games titles. In many respects they were still getting their feet wet, learning their craft, and what they produced was largely of the practice variety. The Audio Mario game was certainly better than their earlier games, but it could have used more work in various areas of development. At the time the lead developer quit they were just beginning to explore and design serious action games, and certainly would have gotten better in time. However, they quit before they really got started. dark wrote: Hello Allan. Dragonslayer games was a set of small quick games produced by a group of developers who were just getting used to making games and finding their feet. they had some quick online games using sound effects and text messages, and two downloadable games with text boxes, dragon warrior and elemental battle which functioned as simple turn based combat and item collection games, they were working on some more serious audio games under developement including an audio marrio with original sfx and music, (which was interesting if a trifle problematic), but unfortunately the lead programmer basically decided to throw in the towel. I'm not sure if their stuff is stil available, but while they showed some promise and were improving with each title, I'd say your not missing too much. Re: [Audyssey] off topic: qbasic compiler
You will need a compiler, Visual Basic would be your best bet, from Microsoft's site. It does cost a good handful of cash, though. So watch that. I have Ms Vb.net, and I think its definitely worth it if you don't have to pay anything, because there is a free version of VB.net, I believe. The free version has more accessibility issues though, so just giving you a heads up there. Its on the Microsoft Visual Basic website, just try googling it should be in the first three results. totally agree with you there. RPG's are my favorite, or close to it. That's why I have started in coding my own MOO, which is a type of MUD -- on my MUD I enforce being "in-character", so the RP gets very intensive, at times. I also like how adventurous MUDS and other text-games can seem at times. Personally, I find the options rather limitting compared to what was available to me before I lost my sight, and is the main reason I began writing accesible games myself. As for the GMA engine I have to disagree with you. Besides the fact it is a bit old it still is one of the best tools an accessible developer can use. It is an FPS game engine, and in the right hands it could be used to create some killer accessible games. We have already seen what it can do with Shades of Doom and Tank Commander, and I think with some updates it should be able to create games more or less on par with Star Trek Elite Force, Star Wars Jedi Knight, etc. In some respects it isn't the fault of the tool here, but perhaps it is the developer's lack of imagination, creativity, or experience with full blown FPS games here. As for the Star Wars game I was working on I had to put that project on hold for a couple of reasons. First, I am still trying to work with Lucas Film on obtaining a Star Wars license. Second, when Alchemy closed up I took over their games and projects which I want to complete before returning to my own original projects. I'm not sure why but simple and easy games appears to be what sells in the accessible games market. As many people know one of my plans will be to create a full blown 3d game engine, as in actual 3d levels with 3d objects, 3d movement, as well as 3d audio support. No sooner did i mention my plans I got various comments to the effect that anything I made using it would be "too hard" even though they never seen the final product yet. One of the things that bothered me was some people immediately tried to tell me that because they have problems with Audioquake and Technoshock they absolutely know that they couldn't play any of my games. They didn't seam to consider the fact that with Audioquake accessibility is poorly implemented, and because it is a modified version of Quake it wasn't designed from the ground up for a blind player. Accessibility is an add on, and there could be a lot more done to it to provide accessibility. Technoshock also has some accessibility issues, that make it harder than say Shades of Doom to play, and i feel accessibility could b done better in that game. I've seen what works and what doesn't and I'd use that experience plus my own blindness to work out any and all accessibility problems that might crop up. Anyway, the bottom line is now and then we see a thread like this where someone suggests coming up with something new, something different, something more mainstream, and when a developer tries to do that, come up with something truly amazing like Rail Racer, the complaints thatit is too hard come rolling in. As a developer we really can't win. No matter if we do something easy or something new and slightly challenging someone is going to complain. Che wrote: I agree with ya man, I tried something different with rail racer, and I suppose it was somewhat successful, but i got lots of complaints that it was too complicated to play. folks complain if it is too easy, if it is too hard, if it takes too much practice to master, blah blah blah. just can't please all the folks all the time. next i am doing an online playable football game, driven with mouse support, custom plays, online season play against human opponents, high end sound effects, etc. . Just make sure that nothing is blocking the sensor bar and that the sports cd is in correctly--you'll get a weird blurping sound if it's not. You'll also need to sync a second remote if you have one, by holding buttons 1 and 2, the little round buttons, down once the Wii is activated. I haven't tried the resort games yet, but when I get a little extra cash I intend to get it--the gyros are supposed to make play a lot more realistic. As far as accessibility goes, Party games 1 is very accessible. You'll just have to memorize where each game is, they don't change position. Shuffleboard, for example, is on the bottom I believe three games from the left--not sure. Party games 2 is harder to set up and the only difference is that it has a football throwing game and other game features are enhanced; for example, every time you release the a button, the puck is released, which doesn't always happen with the original. Wii fit is also very accessible for the most part, but some games like skiing you won't be able to do because you won't know which way to go. The hoola hoop is especially awesome because you can hear which side the hoop falls on and know to lean that way to catch it. The tightrope game is pretty easy too, and you'll hear the chompers--and when they get too loud you jump over them. The only problem is you won't know which way you're leaning. Sonic at the Olympics only has a few games in that collection that are accessible. There are also two Wii games you can play on your PC, both free. One is called Audiodyssey and the other is Darkroom. For that, you'll need a Bluetooth hookup. As far as I know, there is no GTA for the Wii, but my brother-in-law says that they have Bully, which might be worth checking out. They also have Mortal Kombat, which I definitely want to get, and a boxing game called Punchout that Lliam Ervin did a podcast on, but since I missed the show I can't tell you much about it except that you face contender after contender until you become champ. One that changes depending on what the player base contributes. one that may not necessarily have an end, since if it did you couldn't continuely play. The coder(S) and builder(S) also strive to make your time connected to Cosmos, as "Error-less" as possible. From godwars2, the most advanced mud I've ever seen, all the way down the line to your basic diku, abyr and lp codebases, it all degenerates to the same thing in the end. Even games like miriani and star conquest where the killing is indirect, its all still grinding in my opinion. The difference in a lot of gamers is that there's different levels of grinding that people can deal with. Some people can play alter aeon all day and grind to their hearts content, even though the combat is hardly descriptive at all and grinding gets rather slow at higher levels. Some people need the more advanced miriani to get their grinding fix and earn their place on a game. Me personally, I generally don't like grinding in any form, but instead look for well-described combat or attack skills, for example: New moon, discworld, unofficial squaresoft mud. I also look for advanced mechanics, godwars2, project bob, etc. Very, very few muds interest me for long, and even the ones that do I get bored of eventually no matter how powerful I get, hence my ripping of miriani a few days back. Almost any mud, provided you've never played anything like it before, can start out good, but in the end it all turns into the same thing after a while. -- From: "Tristan B" Sent: Saturday, August 08, 2009 8:53 PM To: "Gamers Discussion list" Subject: Re: [Audyssey] good muds I am not being predgedist, but Alter Aeon, can get quite boring. I will be posting an email introductor-ing, as it were, "the NEW Cosmos". In Cosmos, we made alot of mistakes, that were very little at first, but slowly affected the entire game. The combat has been improved. We have a plot, and there are new ships. We also have a new sound pack, thanks to Bryan Davis, one of our players. To download the sound pack, or just browse the site, visit http://trekgames.net. Get to the city my office is in at like 8:30. walk to the office. in any kind of weather condition. And btw. it snows here a lot. then from 9 till 4:30 I am a slave to the corperate world. I get on the train at 5, get home at 5:45. I check email, then collapse. I'm not exactly sure what the future will look like for LWorks. It is possible the company may only need me part time, but.. For right now. I'm going in on a daily basis. I will do the best I can to update existing games, and do what I need to do. But it's goign to be rough on me.
