[Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
Hi folks, My apologies if I bring up a question that has already been discussed to death, but I don't see anything about this in a casual browsing of the archives. At first I thought I didn't have any screen reader software, so I couldn't test the accessibility of my RSW website directly. But then I realized that every Mac has VoiceOver built-in, and it's quite nice! I've been going through my web pages with VoiceOver, and I've found a number of minor issues that I'll be correcting. But I'd hate to fine-tune my pages to VoiceOver's quirks only, without knowing about similar quirks in other software. In particular, what do Windows users typically use to browse the web? I see that Narrator is built-in to Windows, but it's almost unusable. Even Narrator itself recommends users buy a third-party program instead. So, if I were to purchase one such third-party program for the purpose of testing my website's accessibility under Windows, which program should it be? Thanks! Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
Thanks for the advice, everyone! NVDA and System Access are workable, but clumsy. JAWS is much nicer, it approaches VoiceOver in usability, but it's incredibly expensive (you could buy a new computer for less). Of course, I can use it in the free demo mode for my purposes, but do people really spend so much on JAWS? I guess the most important question is, what software do people actually use? I see after a quick inspection that all of these options read my webpages slightly differently. I don't want to waste time making it work well with a program that no one uses. Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
jaws, nvda and window-eyes probably have the biggest user base. Oh and we forgot the supernova suite from dolphin. www.yourdolphin.com I personally dislike jaws now since imho freedom scientific is now trying to get more cash out of people rather than fix bugs and add useful features but, that's off topic. - Original Message - From: David Rose drokaudysseygam...@ddrose.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, January 28, 2011 8:09 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software? I see after a quick inspection that all of these options read my webpages slightly differently. I don't want to waste time making it work well with a program that no one uses. Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
Greetings David. Despite its prohibitive cost, JAWS definitely dominates the screen reader market due to governmental endorsement through purchase orders for educational institutions and other services. Regarding making your site accessible: generally, if it's accessible to NVDA, it will more than likely be accessible to the bigger screen readers (JAWS, Window-Eyes, System Access, etc). Feel free to test your site with NVDA. At worst, you'll get some strange JAWS behaviour, which can be rectified upon user input. Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
well any screen reader will work, strictly speaking there is some w3c guidelines at w3c.org or something but I have never viewed this. These guidelines are for accessability and are probably something you want to look for. Having headings and sub headings were applicable, lists, bulleted or otherwise, forms list combo boxes, labeled radio and check controls etc. Text modes or just text and no graphics, though alt text descriptions of images will be good. No image links if you can possably avoid those. No flash unless you label everything i guess, and audio, well no music playing in the site because it can go over the volume of readers. But having a theme, buttons and links making noise, small audio messages on the site, in fact as long as you don't overdo it you can be as fancy with audio as you want. Though be wary for those using mobile devices etc. At 07:45 a.m. 29/01/2011, you wrote: that's a hard one. there's jaws from freedom scientific, window-eyes from gw micro. nvda wich is a free product and system access from serotek and you can get a free account at satogo.com On Jan 28, 2011, at 1:07 PM, David Rose wrote: Hi folks, My apologies if I bring up a question that has already been discussed to death, but I don't see anything about this in a casual browsing of the archives. well comercial readers cost loads. Jaws is not the be all end all though loads of people in organisations will tell you its the only one. Nvda is a simple reader that is a narater replacement. If you never have any need to run vertual mode or anything then nvda works quite well. Its also not to bad though I would never use it as a full time reader ofcause. Its opensource, you should get on the lists or something if you think you can help they are always fixing things. At 08:09 a.m. 29/01/2011, you wrote: Thanks for the advice, everyone! Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
Hi David, Yup, as a user experience NVDA feels a little clunky at times, but I'd still recommend testing with that on Windows. My thinking is that NVDA currently has the least amount of quirks in terms of how it interprets HTML, so although it's a bit raw, a page that is easy for you to use with both NVDA and VoiceOver shouldn't throw up any surprises no matter what people are using. For the record, your JAWS is much nicer, it approaches VoiceOver in usability comment gave me a good laugh. Talk like that would get you the cyber equivalent of a standing ovation from some groups of blind folks, and thrown to the lions by others. Fortunately, this list is pretty neutral. Good luck, and if there's anything specific you get stuck on accessibility-wise just shout. Scott On 1/28/11, David Rose drokaudysseygam...@ddrose.com wrote: Thanks for the advice, everyone! Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
sevgiler: Rather than subjecting David to personal opinions about screen readers, lets attempt to be objective to give him the information he needs. In this instance, David is asking what screen reader people use most, not necessarily which is the best or worst, or even which one performs poorly. I happen to use NVDA right along side my JAWS, and they are, for me, very comparable products, with the added bonus that NVDA is free. Plenty of people use NVDA on a regular basis without complaint, so such negative statements about its viability are at best unfair. Criticism is all well and good (I do plenty of that myself), but lets do so in an appropriate thread/forum, if we must. Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
well if you think nvda has all the features of all the comercial readers then you are gona be rather dissapointed. Compaired to comercial readers its a bunch of crap, no vertual cursers, and not necessarily good flash or image link detection. But on the other side it has good web navigation compared to jaws. I has never crashed on websites at all, at least not the stable versions. Except for a few apps its quite stable and its python powered. Its also fast, and can run with about anything you care to shove it at. Its also is portable and small. Concider nvda an advanced narater clone. It works for general basic work in fact I use it on a win7 system where I don't need advanced software quite well. At 09:25 a.m. 29/01/2011, you wrote: Why is it not a good screen reader? Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
well nvda can't read everything. it doesn't really read winamp either or eudora7 or some things. ONe difference with nvda over others is it relys exclusively on msaa, some hooking and vertual buffers. Most stuff it relys upon is already in the system. THere are no graphics intercepts and no extra drivers to load or any issues with those or anything like that. As I said compare that nvda to jaws and you will be verry dissapointed! You have 2 choices 1. nvda is a pile of crap and jaws is good. 2 or don't compare it with any comercial reader at all. Its got its own class in some ways, relying on what is in the system rather on its own supports. I realise for some of us blind people this is gona be hard. For the newer generations there is no use but for those born in the 80s or earlier, untill recently 1995 and up maybe really 2003 there was no actual accessability to anything. everything was or rather is used via our own supports. Back in the day we used synth speech coded for hardware boxes etc. In fact when windows started we were like that till probably 98-2000 when we started using software speech so for some of us thats not to far ago. Basically if you are a person that knows what dos looked like and knows what jaws for dos, or mastertouch, keysoft and keynote gold sa are or were then you can be excused. Its only the current generations of blinks 2005 and up which have never seen any old system in their lives. At 09:38 a.m. 29/01/2011, you wrote: But it is not reading msn. Jaws is good than it. Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
Hi David, Speaking for myself, I use Window-Eyes on the PC and VoiceOver on the Mac, and Speakup under Linux. The latter would probably be difficult to test, as it requires a complete new OS, and besides is definitely in the minority as far as total usage goes. Hope this helps, Zack. Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
Thanks for the advice, everyone! I apologize for setting off a firecracker in your midst. :) I will continue to test with NVDA and back it up with an occasional check with JAWS and Window-Eyes on the PC, and VoiceOver on Mac. (The accessibility guidelines are useful, and of course I have been following them; but it's still important to know how actual implementations respond to webpages in practice. It's the same reason a web developer should always test his page on several different browsers.) Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
Hi David. most windows screen reader users use one of three programs. jaws, window eyes or hal (what I use). these days though, web navigation is such a fairly standardized business, your only likely to run into trouble access wise if your websites include none standard controls, flash, funny java aps or similar. bog standard text and links with labled images isn't likely to cause trouble, and certainly i noticed nothing when brouser the site myself. Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
I know that we will never agree in terms of screen reader. It's like clothes, it's a matter of taste. And each person uses the computer diffrently with diffrent purposes and diffrent applications etc. I personally love NVDA and honestly it's my favourite screen reader. I love the screen reader on itself, and I like the concept! I think that blind people should pay for what they need in life just like everyone else. But the access to the computers is somehow diffrent because it involves access to education and access to emploiment etc. When you have someone who will employ a blind person and he or she knows that he will have to pay more than one thousand Euros for allowing this blind person working for me, he or she will probably think twice. If you have a freeware screenreader, at least you have the option of doing it otherwise and you have the possibility of employing a person for no more cost than other workers.. A freeware screenreader opens a lot of doors for blind people all around the world and remember that blind people are not only from rich countries. Allthough you probably don't listen them much on this list, there are blind people in a lot of countries in development. And nvda opened the door to them to legally have access to school and work. You will not ask schools in poor countries to pay more than 1000 Euros for teaching blind students with computers don't you? I don't care eif it's better or worst and even more, I think there is space for everyone. If you have a lot of money and want something extraordinary and wonderful buy your beautiful jaws! But others also have the right to use computers. For me NVVDA does everything what I need and it's light, eficient and suits all my needs. If you give me a legal copy of others, I will stay with nvda because I simply like it. Allthough NVDA is not competing with comercial screen readers, I understand why their sellers are nervous! And my last point the people who most criticize NVDA, we know very well why they do it and we also know what very often they do with comercial ones. Re: [Audyssey] Windows screen reader software?
Every screen reader user has their preference, or is limited to a particular screen reader due to financial circumstances. For me, JAWS for Windows is my choice because, as far as I know, it is the most flexible. I am fortunate enough to be employed, and can afford it. It is, to me, the best, but is also the most expensive.
I think you'll be satisfied using NVDA. Everything that works with JAWS seems also to work with NVDA. There is also the benefit of mouse tracking; which you don't get with JAWS.
