I think the paths option is only a function of the developers version of gimp 1.2.x. Yes Gimp has shortcut functionality too, the key shortcuts are listed on menu items when you right click on any image. Its also possible to reassign these shortcuts. From memory you press the keys you want to assi

the paths work fine, at least in linux with the devel gimp. this includes paths that are not closed (it just makes the last line for you, same way photoshop does it) the easiest way is the make your path and then click in the middle (the cursor changes to give you a hint that you can do this)
