Re: [H] Licensing and new computer upgrade/transfer questions...
Bino, Just be careful what you get from the cheap vendors. My experience has been that they will freely sell you an install off a volume license. This caused problems with me everytime I moved to a new system. The volume license had no more installs and I had to call M$. The other time I had a Win10 Pro key and when I went to install it, I found out it required a yearly renewal from a domain. In that case, the people who sold it to me didn't know that either. FWIW, I found out that traditional Office licenses (for example) only allow you to install it on one computer-says so right on the licensing page...and I guess that would be true for most software, now that I think about it...just seems painful if you have multiple machines tho...like once I get my desktop then that's 3 licenses I'd need...or I guess I would have to reinstall it from one machine to another huh...? Anyway, to make it simple, I signed up for the Office 365 family plan ($100/yr) and was just going to install that on both the laptops and go from there...but ran into 2 issues: 1) First, on the old machine that had Office Pro Plus 2019 installed, it doesn't launch the Office 365 version of the apps, it launches the 2019 versions. Do I need to uninstall Office 2019 first, anyone know? 2) BUT, the thing that's got me re-thinking O365...the O365 version of Outlook on the new laptop is...not nearly as nice-looking as the one in 2019...it seems almost like a webpage turned into an Win 10 "app" and I kinda hate those compared to the old-school desktop versions of the software...it's enough to really put me off and I spend a lot of time in Outlook and it's like the main app I use most of the time... Anyone have experience with this and/or the same feelings? Wondering now if it's better to just get an Office Pro Plus 2021 license and install that on the other machine... I found one at this site that lists it for $60 (vs the $440 from MS!) https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpcsalesonline.com%2Fen%2Foffice-accounting%2Foffice-professional-plus-2021data=04%7C01%7C%7C41e82d9f841f4680058008d9dd218628%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435%7C1%7C0%7C637783958326356341%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000sdata=MLhCahtAhuAEX60g5MXj%2Bwqg%2F0p77KO7IdZh2xL%2BvT0%3Dreserved=0 This site has it for $130.. https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmrkeyshop.com%2Fen%2Fmicrosoft-office-2021%2F84-office-2021-professional-plus-product-keydata=04%7C01%7C%7C41e82d9f841f4680058008d9dd218628%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435%7C1%7C0%7C637783958326356341%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000sdata=QTTKCXOS5U6J9vYO9ave1ty8l6K8Pjugvbn%2BNk68Gk0%3Dreserved=0 Anyone have experience with either site if I got that route and scrap the Office 365 thing b/c the graphics on the apps suck...? Thanks, Thane. Hadn't thought of that. I'll let you guys know what happens, but from the speed that they are looking into this, I wouldn't expect any news soon. I've been told that other people in other divisions have this problem, then again, these guys like to make up stories. I will put forward the idea that maybe they need to restart the router, but then again, I don't know how they've architetured the building. Thanks for that one, Lopaka. That sounds like something I can feed the local guy to suggest. The ticket for slow network has been in to the third-party IT for seven months now. I'm not the only one that experiences the problem but it seems to vary throughout the department. I'm not even sure if everyone in the area is on the same router. [H] Fwd: Officially Released 'burned' DVD movies?
Ok, figured it out. These are what are called MOD disks or 'Media On Demand'. Amazon is one of those that does this service. The DVD is recorded with what you want, especially on low demand movies. So there are legal burnt DVDs. Steve Forwarded Message Subject:Officially Released 'burned' DVD movies? [H] Produkey doesn't find key
Maybe someone has run into this before. Win10 system won't boot. Drive accesses fine as 2nd drive on system, just won't boot. When I run produkey, it only returns the local system key even when I point it to the usb-attached non-booting drive. Futzed with the settings but it only returns the local key, no results on external key. Am I SOL here? Thanks...Steve
[H] Network Problem with Linux/Unraid Server
Hopefully someone is familiar with Unraid and/or Linux for this one. I have an Unraid server (6.7.2) running on a network with a Netgear Nighthawk router and recently added a 8TB usb drive to the USB3 port on the Netgear. No problems there. However, when the Unraid server is on (I don't keep it on all the time), the Netgear will eventually (takes time) lose its internet connector. A reboot of the router will restore the internet. Now if the 8TB drive is off, then no problem with the Unraid server on. The important point here is that I added the 8TB drive to Unraid as an unassigned device and somehow I can't remove it. It will be removed in the interface, but upgrading from 6.5.0 to 6.7.2 made it come back, probably meaning it was still there. I will post this on the Limetech Community, but just wondering if someone has some idea as to what I've done wrong.
Re: [H] List seems dead these days?

[H] Win 10 won't shut down
Well, over the weekend, I found out that the password for my hotmail account had been pwned, so I changed it on Live.com. Since that time, Win 10 won't shut down. Was it a problem that I changed my password to my linked account that way? When I click the shutdown button, nothing happens until I do Cntrl-Alt-Del, then there's a quick flash of an error message and the spinning dots show up and that's where it sits. I haven't let it run that way more than 10 minutes, though. Any ideas? ThanksSteve

Re: [H] Recommendation for New Printer
The specs on Brother and the reviews look better than anyone else. Why I don't like HP: Horrendously expensive ink (about 2x everybody else), wireless you can't rely on (which seems to still happen in the 8720 model). Plus firmware updates that will stop you from printing with 3rd party cartridges. Personally I don't want to give money to a company that tries all the tricks in the book to make you pay large amounts of money for their ink. [H] Recommendation for New Printer
I've had this HP 8600 for years. The nice part is that I bought the 2nd paper tray so that I can print either normal paper or shipping labels by selecting an option and not have to switch paper. It's giving me problems now (I may be able to get it working again), but it brought to mind the fact that I'll never buy an HP printer again so I'd need some recommendations on a new printer if I should happen to need a new one. I'd like to get one with either two paper trays integral or paper trays that can be swapped. And reasonably priced printer carts (Ha-Ha). What do you guys use? Thanks...Steve

[H] Best Way to Start over with Win10
Working further with my Win10 update problem, I put a bare drive on the system and installed 1709 and it went perfectly (except for the constant babbling of Cortana). So my original boot drive will have to be redone. Which is the best way to do that? I could do a Win10 reset, that wipes the apps and returns the registry to square one, or do I just wipe the drive and reinstall? What's the easiest way to get your Win10 key back? The system is actually down now as the power supply decided that it didn't want to work anymore. Again the standby 5V is bad. Had too many of those. Thanks...Steve

For the Windows Features problem I tried the Windows Modules Installer Service to auto; ran SFC on a safe boot; tried to fix corruptions using DISM. In each case it didn't fix the problem or said it found no problems. The Creators Update install was manual using the program from Microsoft. The error was 0x8007001f. So does anyone have any experience with these. So far, searching has yielded little. Thanks...Steve

Wow! That worked. Changed the metrics to 1 (LAN) and 100 (Wireless), then pulled the internet on the lan and still have internet access and can still print. Excellent job, Jamie! You may have to turn off the Windows Firewall for the connection or set it to Private if Windows prompts to ensure you have full connectivity to devices on the LAN. 10.0.0.X server1name 10.0.0.Y server2name I do something like this when I want VMs in a separated network (with no Internet access) for testing. Re: [H] Thoughts the the next processor upgrade
Thanks, guys, pretty much what I gathered. And you're right it is a 20-30% difference depending on the benchmark that you use. For me, that's not enough to invest close to $1k into. I do need an SSD for the audio samples, just to make the loading faster and probably look into a better audio interface. It amazes me that they spend all their time with 24bit/192k A/D and D/A converters, then stick in a crap Chinese USB chip so that the interface is wonky. From my perspective, it seems that USB has gotten worse, rather than better. When you have to try all your USB ports and/or add an extra card just so a 'universal' device will work consistently, then there is a problem. On 6/17/2017 2:03 PM, Greg Sevart wrote: Agreed. While a 4770K to a 7700K would be more than 15% (a quick Google shows 25-30%), the *perceptible* difference would be negligible. The biggest thing driving upgrades now, IMO, really is the platform--USB 3.0/3.1, NVMe, Optane support, etc. I purchased an X99 board over a year ago. I purchased the i7-6950X the week it came out. Both are still sitting on the bench, along with 64GB of memory, a new Pascal GPU, a 960 Pro NVMe disk, and a Seasonic Titanium PSU. The biggest reason is because I'm exceptionally lazy, but I have to think that another part is simply because my ancient Sandy Bridge-E system (3930K) is still more than sufficient for most of what I do. It's a new era in computing. I think this really started when we first had quality dual-core processors like the Core 2--all of a sudden CPU performance wasn't the bottleneck like it used to be. Obviously the C2 is slow now, but anything Sandy Bridge or newer (> 6 years old!) is really still fine for most tasks. I am looking forward to the new Coffee Lake CPUs expected late this summer though, but only because I have a specific purpose where I need the Intel integrated GPU and could use more than 4 cores. -Original Message- From: Hardware [mailto:hardware-boun...@lists.hardwaregroup.com] On Behalf Of Winterlight Sent: Saturday, June 17, 2017 11:43 AM To: hardw...@lists.hardwaregroup.com Subject: Re: [H] Thoughts the the next processor upgrade With modern processors I don't even notice a difference unless a new CPU gives me at least 50 percent increase in power. In the last 3 months I have been having a problem with the left hand monitor which is a Dell 2407 that runs at 1920 X 1600 . The other two monitors are fine. When the monitors wake up I have no signal to the 2407 and all the wall papers and icons are skewed over to the right. Sometimes a reboot or a complete shutdown and resetting the cables will bring back the signal but even when that happens now it comes back at 1024x768 and even stranger at a refresh rate of 75hz instead of 60hz and then it is a big struggle to get it back to the correct resolution and refresh rate because the correct 1920 X 1600 at 60 hz isn't even available to select. The first thing I did was to remove and then update and install the driver but it happened again. To find out if it was hardware or software when the monitor was down I booted into a different OS. My desktop dual boots Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 10 Pro. The problem remained so I knew it couldn't be a software problem. That left the video card, the cable, or the monitor. The cable is a top quality DVI cable that I got from Monoprice. It appears to be in good condition and I have removed and re seated it a number of times on both video card and monitor when this has happened. A couple of times I thought it was a re seating of the cable that was causing the problem but it couldn't still be the problem and besides I don't see how the monitor itself, or the cable could account for a change in resolution, or an increase in refresh rate. the monitor is using the correct DELL driver and has no monitor type problems... such as pixalation or breaking up video, that sort of thing. Last night I reset Power Balance to never put the monitors to sleep and I will see if that solves the problem for the time being. It has to be the video card right?  I am not a big gamer but I do have a steam account and very occasionally I will buy a game and play it... usually something that is years old... I just played Left4Dead2 for example. However I do intend to be driving four large monitors in the near future... so will a EVGA GTX 1060 with 6GB of RAM do the job or do I need to spend the money on ta GTX 1070. Yes the 1070 will be better in modern games and 3D but I don't use it for that. Will the model number of a modern video card make any difference for day to day multi monitor support? Thanks w Â

Re: [H] Problems with Windows Update
Thanks for the link. One system did get updated to Win10 manually. I had thought that it had been trashed entirely, despite being a fully validated system, it claimed that it was not activated and asked for a key, when I skipped that, it told me that I had to run the setup from within windows, so reboot, but it had already trashed the Win7 install. That looks like a plan. I'll go from Waterfox to Firefox. They use the same profile, so that's one less worry. Re: [H] HP Elitebook
Thanks for the detailed reply. I have an OEM disk of Win7 Home Premium and I've come up against the problem that the disk is keyed to the key on the box, you can't install it with a different key, but you can change the key afterwards. The Elitebook, as I remember now, has, Win7 Pro on it, the key is labeled on the bottom. It's a refurb and there isn't much on it. I agree with the opinion on HP software, usually it's junk, and poorly written. For a Win7 Pro image, your link will come in handy. The alternate and interesting method would be to see if the Win10 install currently on the SSD would be able to adjust to the Elitebook. There was an old Win7 Home Premium on the SSD when I installed Win10. It took about 4 to 5 hours before it got around to finally booting, but all the still installed applications and games worked. I was fascinated to find that Macrium Reflect v4 worked on Win10. I used that to clone the SSD to a std HD so I could used the SSD in the elitebook. The other interesting result was when, on the Win10 system, I replaced the Nvidia G210 with an AMD 6850. Win10 basically acted like it was reinstalling the whole system, took about an hour. To make sure you have your original Windows 7 product key, use Nirsoft ProduKey. Just run it, and either write the key down or save to a text file. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/produkey.zip If you need a Windows 7 disk, they're freely available to download and burn from Microsoft: http://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to-download-windows-7-8-and-8.1-installation-media-legally/ To top it off, you'll get no HP bloatware with this configuration - just clean, beautiful Windows. Download the drivers to a flash drive, and you're golden. To speed up installing the stuff you need, pick what you want from www.ninite.com . it'll download all the common stuff you need (browser, Java, Reader, Libre, VLC, AV) and install it without junkware tagging along. I forgot to mention, if I start from scratch with the SSD (Win7), I don't want to lose the original Win7 key. So, can I install Win7 from the media I have, using it's key, then change the key after install and not lose either key? ThanksSteve

[H] Notebook not saving files on battery
I looked around a little bit and couldn't find anything directly relating to this on the net. My buddy's daughter bought a notebook computer and suddenly I got an email in a panic that she couldn't save her file. Not a lot of detail, but a subsequent email said that once she plugged in, she could save. Anyone ever heard of what's happening here? I have to get some detail as to what she's talking about. I have no idea what she is seeing when she 'can't save'. The operating system is Win8 but she's using Open Office (after I told them about Libre Office, sheesh). Thanks...Steve
Re: [H] New mobo woes no Newegg love
That's a pretty bizarre problem. I don't know how 'the customer' could have bent back a few pins in the middle. I don't think the problem is the fact that Newegg doesn't inspect incoming (think of the number of each of thousands of products), but rather the idiot (probably a vice president) that made the decision to send the board back to you. Not mashed, squashed or otherwise an effect of down but more like bent 180deg backwards like spon face down then bent backwards. Now I, like the rest of us, have bent my share of CPU pins but sure as shit this was a genuine factory defect given the pattern method. Newegg takes it back on RMA only to return it back to me days later unrepaired.as customer damage Good news is it seems Google Trusted Stores was a worthwhile freebie checkbox. I tick it all the time after Newegg orders submit because GTS is sending full refund on a MC gift card! Oh and I got to keep the damaged mobo which otherwise works fine... Moral of the story is Newegg doesn't check box contents on the way out but they sure do at return! -- Using Opera's revolutionary email client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

Okay, Thane, I voted. However, shouldn't you have taken the picture while the cat was alive? I figured I'd see hundreds of votes pour in, but I think she got about ten votes that way (she has 33 in total, and my wife already got between 15 and 25 just from friends she emailed directly).
