Bino,

Just be careful what you get from the cheap vendors.  My experience has
been that they will freely sell you an install off a volume license.
This caused problems with me everytime I moved to a new system.  The
volume license had no more installs and I had to call M$.  The other
time I had a Win10 Pro key and when I went to install it, I found out it
required a yearly renewal from a domain.  In that case, the people who
sold it to me didn't know that either.

FWIW, I found out that traditional Office licenses (for example) only allow you
to install it on one computer-says so right on the licensing page...and I guess
that would be true for most software, now that I think about it...just seems
painful if you have multiple machines tho...like once I get my desktop then
that's 3 licenses I'd need...or I guess I would have to reinstall it from one
machine to another huh...?

Anyway, to make it simple, I signed up for the Office 365 family plan ($100/yr)
and was just going to install that on both the laptops and go from there...but
ran into 2 issues:

1) First, on the old machine that had Office Pro Plus 2019 installed, it
doesn't launch the Office 365 version of the apps, it launches the 2019
versions. Do I need to uninstall Office 2019 first, anyone know?

2) BUT, the thing that's got me re-thinking O365...the O365 version of Outlook on the new
laptop is...not nearly as nice-looking as the one in 2019...it seems almost like a
webpage turned into an Win 10 "app" and I kinda hate those compared to the
old-school desktop versions of the software...it's enough to really put me off and I
spend a lot of time in Outlook and it's like the main app I use most of the time...

Anyone have experience with this and/or the same feelings? Wondering now if
it's better to just get an Office Pro Plus 2021 license and install that on the
other machine...

I found one at this site that lists it for $60 (vs the $440 from MS!)

Windows 10 is insanely good about swapping hardware now. Just today I imaged a
drive from an old Second Generation core i3 to an 11th gen i5 without issue, it
downloaded drivers for the motherboard and was ready to go.

As was said, some programs you may need to go through the process of reapplying
licenses, but it depends on the app.

performance definitely does slow down. I'm planning on using DFS-R

[H] Teamviewer Control

2021-05-28 Thread Steve Tomporowski
My sister is legally blind and she lives a distance away, so I use
Teamviewer to help whenever she has problems.  She has Jaws as the
screenreader and has to update to the newest version to work with the
newest version of Thunderbird.  Originally, she had hired an instructor
to help with email and he had created a keyboard shortcut for her to
open Thunderbird.  Due to the update (long story), the keyboard shortcut
has vanished.  I tried to remote in and create one but Teamviewer or
Win10 wouldn't let me edit the desktop shortcut.  I can't seem to find
any reference to whether Teamviewer allows that or not or if there is
any setting to change for that.  Anybody know Teamviewer well enough to
know?

[H] Fwd: Officially Released 'burned' DVD movies?

Ok, figured it out.  These are what are called MOD disks or 'Media On

recorded with what you want, especially on low demand movies.  So there
are legal burnt DVDs.

As part of my eBay business, I acquire a lot of DVDs.  I've noticed that

[H] Network Problem with Linux/Unraid Server

2019-11-26 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Hopefully someone is familiar with Unraid and/or Linux for this one.

I have an Unraid server (6.7.2) running on a network with a Netgear
Nighthawk router and recently added a 8TB usb drive to the USB3 port on the
Netgear. No problems there. However, when the Unraid server is on (I
don't keep it on all the time), the Netgear will eventually (takes time)
lose its internet connector. A reboot of the router will restore the
internet. Now if the 8TB drive is off, then no problem with the Unraid
server on. The important point here is that I added the 8TB drive to
Unraid as an unassigned device and somehow I can't remove it. It will be
removed in the interface, but upgrading from 6.5.0 to 6.7.2 made it come
back, probably meaning it was still there.
I will post this on the Limetech Community, but just wondering if someone
has some idea as to what I've done wrong.

[H] Win 10 won't shut down

2019-02-18 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Well, over the weekend, I found out that the password for my hotmail
account had been pwned, so I changed it on Live.com. Since that time, Win
10 won't shut down. Was it a problem that I changed my password to my
linked account that way? When I click the shutdown button, nothing happens
until I do Cntrl-Alt-Del, then there's a quick flash of an error message
and the spinning dots show up and that's where it sits. I haven't let it
run that way more than 10 minutes, though.
Any ideas?
ThanksSteve

Re: [H] Recommendation for New Printer

2018-05-23 Thread Steve Tomporowski
The specs on Brother and the reviews look better than anyone else. Why I
don't like HP: Horrendously expensive ink (about 2x everybody else),
wireless you can't rely on (which seems to still happen in the 8720
model). Plus firmware updates that will stop you from printing with 3rd
party cartridges. Personally I don't want to give money to a company that
tries all the tricks in the book to make you pay large amounts of money for
their ink.

[H] Recommendation for New Printer

2018-05-23 Thread Steve Tomporowski
I've had this HP 8600 for years. The nice part is that I bought the 2nd
paper tray so that I can print either normal paper or shipping labels by
selecting an option and not have to switch paper. It's giving me problems
now (I may be able to get it working again), but it brought to mind the
fact that I'll never buy an HP printer again so I'd need some
recommendations on a new printer if I should happen to need a new one. I'd
like to get one with either two paper trays integral or paper trays that
can be swapped. And reasonably priced printer carts (Ha-Ha).

What do you guys use?

Thanks...Steve

The recommend was to run msconfig and disable it.

Tried googling around but doesn't seem to be very common. Any ideas?

[H] Best Way to Start over with Win10

2017-12-25 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Working further with my Win10 update problem, I put a bare drive on the
system and installed 1709 and it went perfectly (except for the constant
babbling of Cortana). So my original boot drive will have to be redone.
Which is the best way to do that? I could do a Win10 reset, that wipes the
apps and returns the registry to square one, or do I just wipe the drive
and reinstall? What's the easiest way to get your Win10 key back? The
system is actually down now as the power supply decided that it didn't want
to work anymore. Again the standby 5V is bad. Had too many of those.

Thanks...Steve

Re: [H] Win10 Update Problems

2017-12-23 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Still no joy.  My next step may be to take a clean drive and try
installing to that.  If that fails then it would have to be a hardware
problem.

uninstalling it and try again. If not, try removing any ASUS drivers
/ software and see if that helps.

I discovered it by doing a clean install and found I broke updates
again after installing the software and tools I usually use. You
could  do the same - do a clean install onto a separate disk and
verify Windows updates successfully, then start installing the
software and drivers from your current system. From a USB key it's
not too bad to do the Windows install now, the software and drivers
is definitely the painful part.

I'd be surprised if there's actually a hardware incompatibility -
it's possible but unlikely on hardware this recent.

Have to use a reg cleaner as one of the applications, Free Studio (my

I discovered it by doing a clean install and found I broke updates
again after installing the software and tools I usually use. You
could  do the same - do a clean install onto a separate disk and
verify Windows updates successfully, then start installing the
software and drivers from your current system. From a USB key it's
not too bad to do the Windows install now, the software and drivers
is definitely the painful part.

I'd be surprised if there's actually a hardware incompatibility -
it's possible but unlikely on hardware this recent.

[H] Windows Features window empty & Unable to update to Creator's

2017-11-26 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Been a frustrating two days.  Won't bore you with all the details but on
my Win 10 system, I was trying to install NET 3.5 (old game) and found
that Windows Features are empty.  Then tried several times to update to
the Creators update and every time it failed.

For the Windows Features problem I tried the Windows Modules Installer
Service to auto; ran SFC on a safe boot; tried to fix corruptions using
DISM.  In each case it didn't fix the problem or said it found no problems.

The Creators Update install was manual using the program from
Microsoft.  The error was 0x8007001f.

So does anyone have any experience with these.  So far, searching has
yielded little.

Thanks...Steve

DHCP response from the router saying that it's a valid connection,
and most of the time Windows prefers physical cables to wireless.

It may work with the router is still plugged into the LAN network
(without the Internet connection plugged in) if you go into adapter
settings on the computer and set the metric of the wireless NIC to
1, and the wired NIC to 100. (Settings -> Network & Internet ->
Network and Sharing Centre -> Change adapter settings, right click
on network connection -> Properties -> IPV4 settings -> Advanced ->
metric text box). The problem with leaving the router in play is it
will do DNS also, and that may confuse the computer or servers if
they don't get responses or gets bad responses back from the router.

To get rid of the router (or if the above doesn't work) you'll need
to follow through a few things here to make this work. This sounds
like one of the rare cases to use static IP addresses on the wired
network - make sure like Thane said that the two networks have
separate IP ranges, and there's no default gateway set for the wired
LAN devices. I would statically set the IP addresses on the devices
on the wired network and add if you use names for them then add them
to your hosts file.

You should end up with something like following structure:

 * Wireless - 192.168.1.0/24
o handled by DHCP - actual IP range doesn't matter so long as it's
   different then the wired
 * LAN - 10.0.0.0/24
o 10.0.0.X (where X is unique for each device)
 o netmask 255.255.255.0
 o no gateway
 o no DNS

In the %WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file on your machine add
a line like this for each server (the printer software will likely
figure it out once the printer is assigned a static IP address,
though it may take a reinstall). You may have to turn off the
Windows Firewall for the connection or set it to Private if Windows
prompts to ensure you have full connectivity to devices on the LAN.

    10.0.0.Y server2name

I do something like this when I want VMs in a separated network
(with no Internet access) for testing. The biggest difference is
that I do use DHCP on the split network, but there's no gateway
defined so it works without having to configure each host. That
means having a DHCP server and the knowledge to configure it though.

Re: [H] Thoughts the the next processor upgrade

2017-06-18 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Thanks, guys, pretty much what I gathered. And you're right it is a
20-30% difference depending on the benchmark that you use. For me,
that's not enough to invest close to $1k into. I do need an SSD for the
audio samples, just to make the loading faster and probably look into a
better audio interface. It amazes me that they spend all their time
with 24bit/192k A/D and D/A converters, then stick in a crap Chinese USB
chip so that the interface is wonky. From my perspective, it seems that
USB has gotten worse, rather than better. When you have to try all your
USB ports and/or add an extra card just so a 'universal' device will
work consistently, then there is a problem.

Agreed. While a 4770K to a 7700K would be more than 15% (a quick Google

thing driving upgrades now, IMO, really is the platform--USB 3.0/3.1, NVMe,
Optane support, etc.

I purchased an X99 board over a year ago. I purchased the i7-6950X the week
it came out. Both are still sitting on the bench, along with 64GB of memory,
a new Pascal GPU, a 960 Pro NVMe disk, and a Seasonic Titanium PSU. The
biggest reason is because I'm exceptionally lazy, but I have to think that
another part is simply because my ancient Sandy Bridge-E system (3930K) is
still more than sufficient for most of what I do. It's a new era in
computing. I think this really started when we first had quality dual-core
processors like the Core 2--all of a sudden CPU performance wasn't the
bottleneck like it used to be. Obviously the C2 is slow now, but anything
Sandy Bridge or newer (> 6 years old!) is really still fine for most tasks.

I am looking forward to the new Coffee Lake CPUs expected late this summer
though, but only because I have a specific purpose where I need the Intel
integrated GPU and could use more than 4 cores.

With modern processors I don't even notice a difference unless a new
CPU gives me at least 50 percent increase in power. I do video
encoding and, I wouldn't consider a upgrade of my CPU unless I could
double my processor power. That said, I have been running a six core

 Subject: [H] Strange NVIDIA problem

My desktop uses a three year old NVIDIA GTX 660 plugged into three
monitors. In the last 3 months I have been having a problem with the
left hand monitor which is a Dell 2407 that runs at 1920 X 1600
.  The other two monitors are fine. When the monitors wake up I have
no signal to the 2407 and all the wall papers and icons are skewed
over to the right. Sometimes a reboot or a complete shutdown and
resetting the cables will bring back the signal but even when that
happens now it comes back at 1024x768 and even stranger at a refresh
rate of 75hz instead of 60hz and then it is a big struggle to get it
back to the correct resolution and refresh rate because the correct
1920 X 1600 at 60 hz isn't even available to select.

The first thing I did was to remove and then update and install the
driver but it happened again. To find out if it was hardware or
software when the monitor was down I booted into a different OS. My
desktop dual boots Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 10 Pro. The problem
remained so I knew it couldn't be a software problem. That left the
video card, the cable, or the monitor.

The cable is a top quality DVI cable that I got from Monoprice. It
appears to be in good condition and I have removed and re seated it a
number of times on both video card and monitor  when this has
happened. A couple of times I thought it was a re seating of the
cable that was causing the problem but it couldn't still be the
problem and besides I don't see how the monitor itself, or the cable
could account for a change in resolution, or an increase in refresh
rate. the monitor is using the correct DELL driver and has no monitor
type problems... such as pixalation or breaking up video, that sort
of thing.  Last night I reset Power Balance to never put the monitors
to sleep and I will see if that solves the problem for the time being.

It has to be the video card right?

I am not a big gamer but I do have a steam account and very
occasionally I will buy a game and play it... usually something that
is years old... I just played Left4Dead2 for example. However I do
intend to be driving four large monitors in the near future... so
will a EVGA GTX 1060 with 6GB of RAMÂ do the job or do I need to
spend the money on ta GTX 1070. Yes the 1070 will be better in modern
games and 3D but I don't use it  for that. Will the model number of a
modern video card make any difference for day to day multi monitor
support?  Thanks w

The configuration is this, the router goes to a switch, which feeds the
main computer, a Stora and a server running Unraid.

The situation: I was copying files from the Unraid server to a USB
memory on the computer when things got flaky. The connection seemed to
be timing out (I wasn't watching it all the time). Finally, the computer
lost all connectivity. I've restored internet access, I can access the
Unraid server via a browser, but neither the unraid server or the Stora
now show up in File Explorer. Refreshing network doesn't find them.
I've tried several reboots, of the computer, the stora, the server, the
switch and the router. Updated the router firmware, updated the
computer network card drivers. File explorer remains stubborn. Anyone
familiar with this? Can't seem to find anything resembling my problem

Does anyone here use Handbrake for ripping DVDs? I've been trying to
rip some DVDs here and my first attempts, albeit using the default
settings, the DVD rips in good quality except that it seems that the
aspect ratio is just slightly off. The vertical is slightly stretched.
I'm using KMPlayer for playback and the it's set for maintaining the
source aspect ratio. Yeah, I can make it work, but I think I should be
able to rip at the right aspect ratio.

[H] Browsers

2015-02-14 Thread Steve Tomporowski
What's the collective currently using for a browser? I'm currently
using Waterfox (supposedly a speeded-up version of Firefox), but after
the last update, it's giving me problems. I've upgraded my internet
service to 100MB, but after just a few hours, Waterfox slows to a crawl
and I only get the speed back up by closing it and reopening it. I'm
assuming that straight Firefox will probably do the same, so I think
I'll see how Chrome works out.

ThanksSteve

Re: [H] Browsers

2015-02-14 Thread Steve Tomporowski
That looks like a plan. I'll go from Waterfox to Firefox. They use the
same profile, so that's one less worry. The other day, Waterfox was
glacial, I did a speednet test and it was hovering around 9-10 MB/sec.
I shut it down and restarted, and right back to over 100MB/sec.

Thanks guys.

I use Firefox. Chrome (once compromised) is way to much of a pain to
fix, and I find it gets compromised more easily (based on computers I
work) than Firefox does. Tomshardware tested all the browsers and
picked Firefox as the best (speed/security) so I'm figure that's a
decent backup to my choice.

Re: [H] HP Elitebook

2014-12-25 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Thanks for the detailed reply. I have an OEM disk of Win7 Home Premium
and I've come up against the problem that the disk is keyed to the key
on the box, you can't install it with a different key, but you can
change the key afterwards. The Elitebook, as I remember now, has, Win7
Pro on it, the key is labeled on the bottom. It's a refurb and there
isn't much on it. I agree with the opinion on HP software, usually it's
junk, and poorly written. For a Win7 Pro image, your link will come in
handy.

The alternate and interesting method would be to see if the Win10
install currently on the SSD would be able to adjust to the Elitebook.
There was an old Win7 Home Premium on the SSD when I installed Win10.
It took about 4 to 5 hours before it got around to finally booting, but
all the still installed applications and games worked. I was fascinated
to find that Macrium Reflect v4 worked on Win10. I used that to clone
the SSD to a std HD so I could used the SSD in the elitebook. The other
interesting result was when, on the Win10 system, I replaced the Nvidia
G210 with an AMD 6850. Win10 basically acted like it was reinstalling
the whole system, took about an hour.

Thanks...Steve

That said I have a aggravating experience to share:

So I order an Asus z97-a for my eldest's new box only to discover 2
RAM slots are dead. End result is I have like 8 bent pins on the CPU
socket. Not mashed, squashed or otherwise an effect of down but more
like bent 180deg backwards like spon face down then bent backwards.
Now I, like the rest of us, have bent my share of CPU pins but sure as
shit this was a genuine factory defect given the pattern method.
Newegg takes it back on RMA only to return it back to me days later
unrepaired.as customer damage

Good news is it seems Google Trusted Stores was a worthwhile freebie
checkbox. I tick it all the time after Newegg orders submit because
GTS is sending full refund on a MC gift card! Oh and I got to keep the
damaged mobo which otherwise works fine...

Moral of the story is Newegg doesn't check box contents on the way out
but they sure do at return!

Okay, Thane, I voted. However, shouldn't you have taken the picture
while the cat was alive? (j/k)

I apologize in advance for this OT post, but it's sort of an
experiment, so here goes.

Our 19 year old cat passed away in the Spring, and my wife is trying
to get her picture on the Jones Cola bottle.

My brother, who considers himself a bit of a Facebook guru with a
massive following offered to get votes for her. I figured I'd see
hundreds of votes pour in, but I think she got about ten votes that
way (she has 33 in total, and my wife already got between 15 and 25
just from friends she emailed directly).

I'm wondering if a mailing list like this would have a bigger impact
than Facebook, so if you have time, please drop a vote here:
